I'm not sure if her asking you to repeat your simple order 19 times is enough times to say, "No onions please". But apparently it isn't enough. Maybe her asking 20 times was the magic number for me to not get onions. Or at least the right burger. Slamming my shake down in front of me and abruptly walking away isn't a big deal. But at least give a brother a straw. And when my jacked up order finally came, same treatment but without the silverware. All I did was ask for food. Pleasantly. Look. I realize your dream job isn't accommodating a bunch of cranky musicians who are on the road, far away from home, entertaining a few thousand people every night. Well, I have mixed opinions on Steak and Shake. This location especially. First thing that caught my attention is the server didn't know anything about a certain special they had been running. The ad was all over the television and was the driving force for late night diners, but she was clueless. I didn't think she was serious at first, but whatever, I gave her a mulligan. The food was wonderful, as Steak and Shake usually is. They have a tendency to make up for bad service with great greasy food. I have been back since this review and I will probably go back again. I usually stay at a hotel up the street when I'm in town. This place is convenient. The service is friendly. There are no Steak N Shakes where I'm from, so it's a nice change of pace. Food is better than McDonald's, which is nice. read more

Came here when I was in town recently, having heard about it from friends on Facebook who lived in this chain's region. It was also recommended by our taxi driver, surprisingly. Then again, there's little else open in this area after midnight. My bf and I weren't particularly hungry, so we split the mushroom burger and fries and ordered a peanut butter banana shake. As far as the claim that steak burgers are the best. Urged, it seemed pretty generic to me, but they did have several burger types to pick from so that was cool. Very few fast food type places or late night places seem to have mushroom burgers, so that was noteworthy. the shake though, was the star. It was hella thick and the flavor was perfect, not too sweet from the banana or sugar and not too overwhelmingly peanutbuttery, but with a strong flavor to it that didn't taste artificial or chemically. Our dining parter had their grilled chicken cranberry salad, which looked really good and was apparently quite tasty. Maybe that would have been the better choice health wise and flavor wise, for the entree. Middle of the night service was friendly and fast but a bit flakey. We had a young white girl as our waitress who indulged me with a giant pitcher of water so she wouldn't have to come by for frequent refills. Strangely she got our order just right without writing anything down, but then handed everything to the wrong people. Just thought that was peculiar. She was super sweet though, and the rest of the staff seemed to be having fun without causing too much of a ruckus at the late hour. They even helped us out with directions as we left. read more

My first time in St. Louis and my first time at a Steak 'n Shake. I don't really understand the hype about these burgers. The patty is super thin, so you almost have to get a double. The bun was pretty solid, but everything else about just reminded me of those sad burgers at McDonald's you get every now and then. We went here for my little brothers birthday tonight. We had a waitress (who I don't think we should name) who took about 10+ minutes to come to our table. No waters, drink orders or anything. Then she came took our order and rang in extra food under our table. She brought us silverware, but no napkins or anything else. She never came back to check on us. She 'apologized' about the extra food. Said we weren't charged for it and yet we were. We had to ask to have refills when we were completely empty. I serve/bartend too so I know how the restaurant business works. I would understand if it was busy, but it wasn't. You should always make sure that the customers should be happy and taken care of. Beware!!! I have never in this lifetime ever walked into a restaurant and before I could be seated looked around and saw how nasty and filthy the place was and walked out. But this one I did it actually turned my stomach to see ground in French fries on the floor were they were trying to seat me but when I pointed it out the waiter said "oh" walked over them again and tried to seat me somewhere else as I looked around the entire place was like this. Dined in. I didn't realize we had come in so close to them closing the lobby. Despite accidentally being "those people" the staff was friendly. Our server should have carried a note pad though she had trouble remembering what we ordered without repeating it back immediately, but I guess that works for her because our order was correct. The food was slow to come out but it was fresh. I suspect that it has something to do with their drive through window being over loaded with customers. While we were inside we watched car after car after car pile up for the drive through and I'm surprised there is not more staff in their kitchen to cook for all these cars AND the dining room. Over the decades STL has gotten a lot better with their customer service as a whole and I feel like I can include this place in that statement. read more

I love Steak&Shake, but this one was very skimpy on the portions. I ordered the small $4 meal, single burger with fries and a soda. The good, soda refills were constant. The bad, there were about 15 fries and the single burger did not cover the bun. It literally had holes in it. read more

This location SUCKS!!! I have had more than one bad experience here. They take the shake machine down for cleaning in the middle of the 1/2 price happy hour which is suppose to run from 2am-5am (I was there at 4am). Then, apparently they don't pay attention to what money was given them, or the guy planned to pocket the change for himself. Had to argue with them that I was suppose to get 2$ back because I handed them exact coinage and a ten dollar bill. I have to agree with other patrons who have said, if you want to stop at a Steak 'n Shake, go to a different location. This one is bad service, and may try to rip you off. read more

This location was once upon a time a decent location. Fresh food, decent customer service, cleanliness, etc. Since the most recent chain of store closings, this location is absolutely horrible. Visited this establishment last night and waited over 30 minutes for ONE milkshake... place was over ran with teenage employees and not a manager in site. I requested a refund and was looked at crazy. Customers were literally walking out due to the long waits. Sad to say, but if this establishment continues with this level of service, this location will also have a "under renovation, seeking new franchisee" sign outside as well. read more

The drive thru worker turned away about 10 customers in a row including us at about 1215am 2/29/20 saying "There's at least a 15 minute delay until I can take your order. I just paid $16 for 4 milk shakes that were basically cups of milk with ground up toppings in them. Super disappointed.

If you want a greasy burger, poor service and hard cold fries go here then go to a doctor because you must be crazy! The non-smiling lady who serviced me said nothing, but "#2", "drink" and "here you go". The burger was so greasy it dropped on me and I had to use a napkin to dry my lettuce. French fries taste like they were old and were already cold as soon as I got them, but I know better than to return some food. The Good: Very quick and friendly service Delicious milkshake and fries. Didn't care much for the Cajun burger though. The Bad: Waitress moves a little too fast. I wasn't even done with my milkshake and she was asking if I needed a to go cup. Had a difficult time checking out. Was trying to pay using their app. Manager had to get involved and discovered the app only worked on one of their two registers. The Ugly: Floor of restaurant needs to be mopped. Doesn't look like it's been mopped for days. Tables are also dirty. Most of the empty tables look as though they were not cleaned. This is the worst Steak'N'Shake location ever. The staff is so unbelievably lazy. We only ordered shakes and an hour later they still weren't done (we were some of the only people in the restaurant). The waitress brought our ticket for us to pay but didn't bring the shakes we ordered. "We're busy making them!" She snapped. We waited a bit longer, but the shakes were never made. May very well be the worst Steak n Shake on Earth. I've tried it quite a few times; either the drive-thru staff can't take the order properly (as in repeating it back to you as incorrectly as possible), you wait 30 minutes in the drive-thru, or they screw up your order and give you the wrong food/short you food/don't follow instructions. Usually all three. My one visit inside took over an hour and a half, and when I asked the server about the burger I'd ordered without onions in fact having a ton of onions, I was told "why don't you just take them off yourself". I sent it back, and promptly got the same burger, with 3/4ths of the onions removed, and the entire thing reeked of onions. Filthy location, loud, inattentive staff. read more

My family and I came here from out of town after a Cardinals game. None of the 4 girls working acknowledged us at first and it took about 10 minutes to get seated (wasn't busy). The waitress didn't smile and only came back to the table once to refill all of our empty drinks. It took roughly 50 minutes to get our burgers. This place is horrible. I visited his location due to my flight being cancelled. I walked in to place my order no one acknowledged me. A few minutes late a girl come up smacking gum. The biggest piece of gum blowing it in my face. I placed my order a burger, fries and drink. She couldn't hear I had to keep repeating myself. Ugh. After I placed my order it took 20 minutes to get my food. FYI NO ONE WAS IN THE PARKING LOT or RESTAURANT !! They had all these workers and this one employee is walking around talking loud. "Imma have to leave because I gotta take my daughter to the hospital. So y'all going have to cover my shift, but I don't know yet" really?! That type of stuff should be discussed in the back office. A few minutes later this other girl is screaming my name like I'm not the only person in the restaurant. I get my bag and realized it's super light. I wanted 20 minutes for just a burger.
