I prefer to support local coffee houses when I'm out of town, rather than the big chains. The Bean is conveniently located off the 101 in Shell Beach. The location is super cute and has decent inside seating as well as a large patio out back. My first time there I ordered an iced pistachio latte and an oatmeal before heading out to Pismo Preserve for a beautiful hike. The iced latte was good. The oatmeal had fruit on top and sweetened w/honey. It was a decent portion and tasty, but pretty expensive. Make sure you have plenty of time to wait for your order, as their service is pretty slow. They're obviously popular and busy, but only have a couple people working. I would definitely get coffee there again. Grab a latte and head for one of the great local parks or trails along the beach and bluffs. read more

One of not so many coffee places on Shell beach. I found only two. While the service is awesome and they even offer coconut milk as an alternative to cow, soy and almond the latte was just plain crap. I made a couple of sips and threw it away. The barista has no training of how to make a good coffee at all or something wrong the the beans. It's sad but I had to drive to the nearest Starbucks to get something decent. Yikes -- my second meal there was one of the worst in memory. If I hadn't just paid about $9 for the breakfast burrito, I would have walked away...but I gagged down most of it. It had the taste and consistency of undercooked hashbrowns that had been put in a blender with sour cream. Zero spice, texture, or discernable ingredients. This is a great joint if you you're on the go, or want to meet up with a friend to catch up over basic cup of coffee or tea. I had high hopes for this place (the ambiance is cute, relaxing, and very hipster-esque). Sadly, I was disappointed. The oatmeal was room temperature, and although the texture was fairly good I expected it to be, well, hot. The breakfast burritos were sort of lumped together on the insides and didn't taste fresh. Not sure I would give this place a second chance. Although the crassont breakfast sandwich was good, it was also pricey. For $10 I would think it would come with a side of some sort, but nope, just a sandwich. The barrito I definitely would not recommend. It came with eggs, two greasy hash browns (I would have preferred country potatoes) and a diced salsa that was not tasty and only made my barrito soggy. That too was $10. Their "specialty" coffee was good, but when my boyfriend and I tasted each other's coffee we both agreed they tasted practically exactly the same! I got the vanilla bean while he ordered the mocha. I think my wallet and I would have been more satisfied with a good ol' Gran Slam and regular brewed coffee from Denny's. read more

I live within walking distance and used to frequent as often as I could. Over the last several months I have found that I wait longer and longer for service and food/drink. I appreciate the coffee and the consistency of the product. But, over and over I have had to wait too long. Sometimes I have been late for work despite showing up earlier and earlier. When I hear other customers complain the response is always that they are waiting for the 2nd or 3rd employee of the day. Sometimes they say that she doesn't start until a certain time. So, not sure if the employee needs to be scheduled earlier or if they are not showing up on time. I hope the service changes because I prefer to give my business to locals whenever I can. I always stop by this coffee shop on my way home to Los Angeles. The shop is conveniently located right off the 101 freeway. Their coffee is delicious and the service is always friendly and prompt. They've kept the local store atmosphere without sacrificing on cleanliness and quality. You must try the breakfast burrito! It comes out piping hot, fresh ingredients and you will likely take half with you because it is generously filled. read more

Such a cute place! My mom and I stayed next door at the Palomar Inn for a weekend, and it was so nice being able to walk next door for coffee in the morning! We went twice. Both times I got a vanilla iced coffee -- perfect amount of vanilla! Not too overpowering, and I could still taste the coffee. It was just the perfect hint. My mom got a Kauai blend coffee on our first visit and she loved it. On our second, she got an iced mocha and loved it just as much! There was so much seating, free wifi, and seating outside too. I was at the Steaming Bean Coffee shop where signs are posted clearly stating that masks are required and safe distancing lines are are on the floor. Three men entered the coffee shop without masks. Had an amazing experience with the Steaming Bean. Ambience was really great - food was really awesome too. We had the breakfast burrito and avocado toast. All the ingredients were really fresh. We also ordered a hot chocolate with oat milk - it tasted really good but it did seem like it was made from Swiss miss powder or a prepackaged cocoa mix. My favorite coffee shop that I finally reunited with after years apart! I went in the other day and there was only one girl working during a rush. I had to wait a few minutes for her to take my order but it was not a big deal at all (except for a woman babbling to me about nail polish and her seashell crafts) and the atmosphere is so cozy I feel relaxed even if it's hectic. Once she took my order (and I should add she acknowledged me the moment I walked in) she was extremely sweet, apologized for the wait, and made my drink absolutely perfect. I moved into Shell Beach about two months ago from Arroyo grande. And I love it. I love even more this local coffee shop. I frequent it anywhere from 3 to 5 days a week. The service is always great. I love their pastries. And I love the latte. It's a win! I want to give you five stars. Unfortunately, the timing of my giving this to you is during Covid. My last three visits this week have been disappointing. Still the service or product is great. However, I walk in the door to find half of the staff without their masks on and 3 to 4 patrons sitting around without their masks on just chatting. I hope your construction is done soon and maybe there will be a walk up window so that those of us that are trying to be safe can do so. Of course more importantly I hope this pandemic is all over soon. But in the meantime I wish that your employees would wear their masks 100% of the time and encourage patrons to do the same or at least ask them to sit outside on your lovely patio if they want to be mask free. read more

Just moved to town and thought would try the coffee shop right down the street. The place had a nice atmosphere and seemed to be rather popular. I ordered two large coffees and two regular breakfast burritos with avocado. The girl who took my order was not unfriendly but she was not friendly either, a smile once in awhile could help. I was a little shocked for the order to almost cost $32. Seems very expensive for two breakfast burritos and two coffees. The breakfast burritos took forever to prepare, about 20 minutes which was unfortunate because I was in a rush. the girl preparing the food certainly took her time and paused frequently to chat with her friends. I wasn't very impressed with the breakfast burritos. I saw the ingredients being chopped up and stirred together before the burrito I was wrapped, blending all the ingredients together turning it all into sort of a mush. I have never seen them prepared this way but some people must prefer them this way. Not me. The burritos were very bland tasting, I think they had a little bit of salsa in them but more would have helped add some flavor. The coffee was very good. read more

We came here for brunch based off a recommendation a recommendation from our hotel. We ordered the scramble and French toast, but unfortunately, we never got to try our food. We waited 40 minutes to eat, only to be told by the staff that they were OUT OF EGGS and therefore could not make any of the food on the menu. We asked for a refund, and we then questioned by the staff about how much food we actually ordered. Definitely do not recommend this place if you would actually like to get the food you ordered. read more
