Lydia was a very attentive waitress with excellent suggestions in menu items. The restaurant itself is beautiful! It's bright, clean, and has a very nice look to it! The best part? The food. If I wasn't so full from all of the appetizers we ordered, I would've licked the bowl clean! I appreciated seeing photos with menu items. Every item we received was fresh, tastyyyyy and filling. After a meal, we were offered a Korean type snack to choose from- shortbread style cookie wafers or rice cake snack. SO GOOD!! We live in Carson but will be coming up more often just to eat here. The owner of HK Market told us about their soft/grand opening on 2/17/24. Too bad they were closed when we got here... So we are back to support on 2/26/24. Support locals! Quality/Quantity - Korean Fried Chicken. KFC - Good fry, but I would have preferred honey as the "sweet" sauce. But I can understand why many businesses do not do that as it is extremely messy. But honey tastes so good! Jjambbong Udon - Okay, if you are following you know we just watched that Netflix special and visited one of their competitors. Again, this was the better of the two noodle dishes. I understand the fusion part and probably why you want to use udon noodles... But the traditional Korean noodles really SOAK up the sauce! Generous amount of seafood, thank you. Jjajang Udon - Similar to the above dish. This was slightly better than their competitors, but again, the udon noodle just throws this dish off. As usual, I would have preferred more pork; just being greedy. I think I got two cubes. 3 Banchan - Pickled radish, kimchi, and my wife's favorite kale. The kale was not my flavor. Fairly simple menu, which I felt was good. All plating & presentations were beautiful, see pictures. Atmosphere - Cool decor throughout, see pictures. Open 7 days a week from 11am to 9pm. Clean organized bathrooms, of course they are brand new also. Plenty of mall parking. Service - Good. The owner was working with the chef the entire time I was here. We have been driving by waiting for STEP to open because I have been waiting for more Korean restaurants to come to Reno/Sparks. So I was very excited to see that they were open! We came around 3pm on a Monday and they had 2 other tables. We were quickly seated and given menus. Our waiter was very kind, but seems new because we did not get drink orders in until we ordered all the food. For the food, we got the following: Korean Fried Chicken (Soy Garlic) - Very crispy! No bones!! The chicken inside was not overcooked. Raw purple cabbage on top that made the plate very aesthetically appealing, but it was not seasoned. Definitely recommend ordering this here! 5/5 Jjambbong Udon - It came in an unexpectedly large bowl, broth is thick and very flavorful with seafood flavors including actual octopus, mussels, shrimp, scallops. It's on the spicy side even as someone that enjoys spicy food. The udon was soft but not too soft (one of the best cooked udon that I have had). This also had raw purple cabbage on top to balance the colors of the gochuchang redness, but this a perfect combination to the broth since it is not seasoned. 5/5 Spicy Pork- The pork was good, but not crispy enough on the outside. Stir fried with onions, carrots, and green onions. Also on the spicier side. Comes with a bowl of white rice. 4.5/5 Complimentary Side dishes - Kimchi, Radish, and Kale. Kimchi is okay, but more sour than I like and not very spicy. Not usually a fan of radish, but this was delicious! It was nice and crunchy with a hint of sweetness. The kale was basically a salad and mixed in a sweet and spicy dressing. The kale looked and taste very fresh too! Kimchi 3/5, Radish 5/5, Kale 5/5 Since they opened just recently on the 16th of February, they did not have a few things on the menu because I wanted to get the Soft Tofu Soup, but not available at this time. I love the feel of the restaurant as well! I love how open it feels along with the modern and aesthetic look they are going for. There is a wall of shelves of Soju, 2 TVs, and greenery throughout the space. The server checked on us throughout and the wait for the food to come out was about 10-15 minutes. I could not finish the udon so I had to take it to-go and our server quickly got a container and bag. Happened to be in this area and spontaneously decided to try this new restaurant for dinner! As soon as we walked in, the ambience is super modern, aesthetically pleasing with the greenery and wood pieces. The staff was ready to seat us, party of 3, with a toddler:) We took a look at the menu and there are pictures on the menu which is super helpful especially if you're not familiar with Korean cuisine, plus we shop with our eyes first. We ordered the edamame and Korean fried chicken for appetizers ( also toddlers meal) unfortunately there was no kids menu, so if you have kiddos who are picky eaters, might not be the spot for you or something to keep in mind, take a look at the menu beforehand to see if the kids will eat from it. Thankfully, as long as there is edamame, my kiddo is good! As for the fried chicken, it was good, I would've liked a rub version of it, because it was quite saucy, it wasn't as crispy but the flavor and juiciness of the chicken was delicious! While Arario will always have a special place in my food loving heart for the Reno area, this place is a respectable alternative. We ordered Bibimbap with pork, Korean Braised Pork Ribs, Beef Japchae and Bulgogi Beef Fried Rice. We liked all of our dishes. The weakest of the four was the bulgogi beef fried rice which unfortunately which didnt have enough flavors to be memorable. The service was friendly and prompt. A newly opened Korean Bistro in Sparks, Step, makes its way into the neighborhood. Shout-out to the homies Julie S. and Matt R. for the invite! Upon stepping inside you're greeted by a chill ambience in a well lit restaurant with a fresh design, reasonable seating and spacing with a staff cheerfully managing the room and guests. I had in mind what I wanted already as I would get the Beef Bimpbop, a korean-style mixed vegetables (cooked radish, carrot, soybean sprout, kale) over white rice with a fried egg with cooked slices of beef and Fritzie would get the Spicy Pork, thin slices of marinated pork, carrot, onion, and green onion with Korean spicy sauce. Julie would start us off with some Corn Cheese Tots which we're of course corn with mozzarella cheese, and rice chips over tater tots. Addi, our server was kind and humourous during our visit and showed care and hospitality, checking in on us after we placed our order and offering us sides and extras when needed. The Corn Cheese Tots were interesting. Good. A very peculiar combination of things brought together as an appetizer to snack on. The meal has arrived. Good lawd the bowl was huge! So much rice! The rice in this meal appeared to over compensate for the light serving of protein but I get it. Maybe since it's Korean it was to be expected that the rice ratio is a bit more, but I'm not really sure and will have to pay better attention next time I'm visiting and ask for the rice on the side. Adding the Gochujang sauce to the meal was really good, flavorful. It wasn't spicy, a tad bit sweet, and brought another dimension of flavor to the meal. I really enjoyed the Spicy pork though. It had a good balance of protein and vegetables along with a reasonable serving of rice on the side. Comparing the flavor of the beef versus that of the pork, I preferred the pork a bit more. I was a little bummed there were no desserts to try this evening, but all in all, there's nothing wrong with a good meal to then get creative with sweets at home. 3.5 stars because definitely room for improvement. I wanted to like this place because we could use more Korean options in town. However, service was incredibly slow. It took a solid 10 minutes to even just get water and when we told the waitress that we were ready to order, she said okay and then didn't come back and when someone finally did come back- we did not get our food, not even appetizers until almost an hour later! I understand being busy but communicate that or check in at least. And even for the sides, we had to ask for them. As for food- I loved the corn cheese tater tots. Quite unique. And I had the braised tofu which was flavorful and filling. However, my husband really wanted the tofu soup and they said they wouldn't have it until a later date. So he was a little disappointed. Not to mention, she forgot to take 2 of the people's orders in our party of 6. Ambiance- great lighting and tasteful decor with plenty of seating. Clean too I think they could tell we were a little unhappy, so later on, they kept checkin in with us and did offer a free appetizer to try and make up for it. A pretty nice spot for Korean food! I saw that they recently opened and decided to come here with my family. The decor inside was pretty and there was lots of seating available. It would get a bit chilly sometimes when people opened the door though due to the cold air coming in, maybe if they used the other entrance instead? I think they should've called it a soft opening rather than a grand opening since some of the items we ordered were not available. We ordered Soy Garlic Korean Fried Chicken, Korean Braised Seafood, Bulgogi, Kimchi Fried Rice, and Jjajang Udon. The Soy Salmon Sashimi, Kimchi Udon, and desserts were unavailable when we tried to order them. The Korean Fried Chicken was pretty good - liked how it was boneless. I liked my Kimchi Fried Rice, a tad expensive for me though, also I don't think I got any asparagus in it. I didn't notice at the time until I re-read the menu that it had asparagus. The highlight of my meal was actually the side dishes. I quite enjoyed the kimchi and kale side dish and asked for refills of them. My family commented that the food was good but somewhat bland. This restaurant takes a special place in my heart because the owner/chef, JJ, is someone who I worked with closely before. Former owner/chef of Bab Cafe JJ creates a happy medium of traditional Korean cuisine with small American touches. My partner and I decided to do a small, spontaneous date night on a Monday and were thrilled to see the restaurant almost full. Two ladies ran the floor so we did wait about 10 mins before being seating but luckily was greeted by JJ on his way back into the kitchen. The menu offers an array of options from Korean Sashimi, Garlic Edamame, Korean Fried Chicken boneless (3 flavor profiles) and so much more. They also offer specials from braised beef to tofu and more Korean traditional dishes such as Bibimbap, Kimchee Fried Rice, Soft Tofu Soup and Japchae. We honestly had a difficult time choosing our dishes since they all sounded amazing. We went with Korean Fried Chicken (sweet and spicy) and Cheesy Tots to begin with and were blown away with flavor. The take on Korean Fried Chicken was a twist with being served boneless but the flavor did not miss. Crunchy bite and juicy chicken made each bite yearning for more. The Cheesy Tots were interesting but combined with the sweet corn and salty mozzarella, everything balanced each other out. My partner ordered the Jjambbong Udon and I ordered the bulgogi fried rice. The Jjambbong is compared to cioppino as a seafood stew but as a Korean dish with a depth, spicy profile. A generous amount for one person with an abundant serving of seafood and udon. The bulgogi fried rice with the fried egg all came together with each bite and the entrees were also served with the daily banchan options: pickled radish, kale and kimchee. Service was great with how attentive the front of house staff were considering it was quite busy for a Monday and they did their rounds as often as possible. We did only ask for a water refill once but that was because the Jjambbong had a delightful spice. The menu specified the spice level on this dish to be at a level 2, if you like spice this was a good level to go with. JJ came to visit and check on us to see how dinner went along, a personal touch I always appreciate from local restaurants. I'm very happy a Korean restaurant made their way to Sparks. The quality and taste of the food exceeded my expectations. No complaints on any dish, very flavorful, nothing was dry or overcooked. My personal favorite is the Jjampong/Seafood soup. The soup was one of the best I ever had, and the spice was very tolerable. They also had immaculate service! The staff were very nice, and they even gave complimentary dishes, which was a nice gesture. That made me happy. Note: any dish photo severely underestimates the amount of food. The restaurant is very generous with their portions. Two appetizers and three entrees were more than enough for 4 people. Also, the price is very fair. Another new 5 star restaurant in Reno. My kids and I have been anxiously waiting their opening and were thrilled today when we drove past and saw the lights were on. Cheesy corn tots app was sweeter than I expected but it all balanced well and portion perfectly matched the price. Beef japchae was also a hit although I did not see any spinach in the dish which was a bit disappointing but not the end of the world. The sides (kimchi, radishes, and kale) were a perfect pairing. Was anxious to try Step out, I'm always pleased when a new Asian restaurant opens in the Sparks area. Its interior is well done with hanging planters with nice artificial plants, open beam ceiling, cut out design panels covering the windows. Menu is simple with vegetarian options, Bulgogi, braised meat dishes, rice dishes and a favorite of mine Bibimbop. A bowl with vegetables including cooked radish, carrot, soybean sprouts and kale over steamed rice. Usually topped with a fried egg on top, which is what I ordered. My friend who joined me ordered the Beef Japchae .. It's a glass noodle dish, with thin slices of marinated beef, onion, carrot , green onion and spinach. We began with Spring roll which were super crunchy and delicious. They were served with a soy vinaigrette. We each had a favorite glass of Salmon Creek wine " very scant " on the pour. With the meal they also bring out a trio of sides that included pickled radish, steamed kale and kimchi. Not loving the kimchi and the kale was odd as an accompaniment. But my only big complaint were the prices.. $80.00 for lunch for two. The waitress was very nice food and wine, all good. But, $$$. The place was empty, which tells me they need to lower prices. More like 2.5 stars. Incredibly forgettable, one of the few times Yelpers failed us. We started with spring rolls and potstickers--both a letdown. The spring rolls were greasy and overcooked with soggy filling; the potstickers were lamentably under-seasoned and bland. Neither inspired confidence in the entrees to come. The beef bulgogi had an acceptable texture and was cooked properly, but it was completely lacking in flavor, just...there. The beef japchae was better, good enough to finish but still entirely forgettable. The banchan was, again, far from memorable--I've had better from packaged offerings from an Asian store. It was puzzling, as several parties--who could have been Korean--were also lunching there. Maybe we just didn't order the right items or the chef "Anglosized' the food for non-Koreans? Another strike was the over loud music from the TVs that made it difficult to converse, ask for a table away from the obnoxious TVs if you opt to try this spot. On a positive note, the service was attentive and gracious without being intrusive. Sadly, the search for good Korean in Reno/Tahoe/Sparks continues; we will not be "stepping" back in (sorry, couldn't resist). read more

The ambiance of the restaurant is really cute and instagram picture worthy. It would be a great place to get together with a group of girlfriends. The service was fast and friendly and they weren't very busy in a Friday night. The menu has all your standard Korean fare and it doesn't diverge very far from that in the creativity aspect. But they do have a whole menu of soju cocktails which I found unique. The menu is on the higher end price wise but comparable to other Korean restaurants in town. We ordered the Korean fried chicken as an appetizer and you choose two flavors: we got sweet and spicy and honey cheese, which both had good flavors and were super crunchy. Maybe a bit overcooked though cause the chicken was a bit dry. We also got the beef bibimbap in the hot pot and jjangmeyon with pork. The egg on top of the bibimbao was pretty hard cooked but it still had great flavor and was a very generous portion. The jjangmeyon was really delicious and filled with veggies but there could have been more pork for sure. This is a nice Korean Bistro. We went on a Saturday night. It was just starting to get busy. We ordered an appetizer. This was wonderful the Soy Salmon Sushimi. Great attention to detail. Carrots cut like flowers. I had the Beef Japchae. It was a little sweet and tasty. My husband ordered the Jjambbong or Spicey Seafood Soup. He did not enjoy the base of the stew. He asked for lemon squeezes to brighten it up some. The Bistro is bright and cheery. I liked their decor. As we were getting ready to leave. The dinner rush was starting to come in. The Boss and I have been waiting a little while before trying out one of the latest entries to the Sparks food scene, but maybe we waited a little too long. Step Korean Bistro is located in the old Black Rock Pizza location and you can still see some of the former occupant's influences. The walls are bright white with lots of windows and exposed beams which give the place an open, modern feel. This is warned up with hand-painted art and origami -- modern, yet welcoming. We arrived for our 6:15 reservations and were the only people there. Fortunately, that lasted only a few more minutes and other guests started to arrive. We were shown to our table by a very nice server who pointed out several delicious sounding options then quickly got us some water. We decided to go family style and ordered Korean Fried Chicken and Beef Tartare for appetizers. The Boss ordered Spicy Pork and I got Beef Bibimbap. The server asked whether I wanted the Hotpot Bibimbap or the Rice Bibimbap. With visions of that beautiful crunchy bottom, I asked for the Rice Bibimbap. She left to enter our order, but returned quickly to tell me they had sold out of the Beef Tartare. I won't lie. Part of me was disappointed as I love Tartare, BUT the logical part of me knew this meant the Tartare was fresh, made in small batches, and turned over quickly. All of these are excellent signs and told me I needed to go earlier next time. I consoled myself with the Cheese Corn Tots which really intrigued me. The food arrived quickly and all together so dinner really was a family-style event. We dug into everything, but not before we grabbed a few pictures. The food was fantastic. Now, The Boss prefers her food around the temperature of solar plasma, but I thought it was perfect. This didn't slow her down in the slightest, though. The Cheese Corn Tots were my favorite. Tater tots covered in mozz and fresh corn topped with rice chips. I know how it sounds, but it was like the most decadent corn side dish I'd ever eaten. Think sweet lightly creamed corn meets nachos. Weird and totally satisfying. The Bibimbap had lots of fresh veggies and a pile of tender steak slices over a layer of fluffy rice. It was very good, but it was missing something -- the crispy, crunchy bottom! Every bowl of Bibimbap over ever eaten had this and I was confused. I mentioned it to The Boss and she reminded me I had ordered the Rice Bibimbap, not the Hot Pot Bibimbap. Hot Pot is a soup though. Now I was really confused. When the server came back over, she confirmed The Boss's thoughts. Just remember, you want the Hot Pot Bibimbap if you're looking for the crunchy bottom. The Boss fell in love with her pile of perfectly spiced tender pieces of pork. It had a mild kick, but nothing more than you'd find in a cup of hot and sour soup. It was definitely her favorite. To top it all off, we split a piece of the seasonal yuzu cheesecake. Just perfect. To be sure, we ordered a lot of food. While we walked away very satisfied, we were also carrying the leftovers for two more meals. Keep this in mind when you look at the menu. The portions are LARGE. We wish we would have tried Step sooner, but we're certainly happy we didn't wait any longer. This is Korean comfort food at it's best. Traditional? Not really. Fantastic, wonderful, and flavorful? I wish I had remembered to get pictures! Went here recently with my husband for his bday and we were very pleased with the food and the service. We wanted to try a few things and got the tteokbokki, the bibimbap, and the japchae noodles. The tteokbokki was the star of the show for sure! Perfect amount of spice and rice cakes were cooked perfectly. Noodles were great too. The bibimbap fell a little flat for me. Lacking in flavor and the egg was hard so that didn't even add any. Overall, we were still very happy with our meal which is why I gave 5 stars. Next time I think I'll just skip the bibimbap. Very glad to have this place here! read more

I was craving udon. I was super excited because I've had it from here before and it was great. I decided to order out. When I got home, I opened up the noodles box that came with my order expecting udon noodles. A specific type of thicker noodle was what I was expecting and craving. Upon opening the box with the noodles, I received what looks like spaghetti noodles! Very disappointed, basically lost my appetite. If they ran out of udon, they should've told me and I would've happily changed my order accordingly. Very disappointed, as I have been raving about this place since they've opened. Also I know they've been working on portion control a while back. But again, to much disappointment, it's never consistent as it used to be. My wife orders the exact same thing every time and it's different EVERY TIME. The first few times upon coming here, the portions were consistent and wonderful. Now it's shorting on rice cakes, or short on the veggies or short on the whole dish in general. From 6-7 rice cakes to 1 or 2, that I would say is a huge difference, especially if the prices are the same. Also to mention, the cooking itself varies. One day the carrots are mush and the next time they're raw. Idk what's going on but this is making us think twice coming here now because we know it can be hit or miss, more so misses as time as time progresses. I wanted to give this place a little more time before I tried because I read the few complaints that people had but I'm glad I didn't wait any longer. Most of the complaints were understandable due to hiccups with opening and getting everyone trained and ready for the onslaught of being the new kid on the block. I really love the new aesthetic inside, it's peaceful, slightly dim mood lighting if you come later in the evening. The staff was cherry, fast and good conversation each time I went. And I will say they hear you as a new spot. I heard a couple inquiries about former complaints. (Huge props to a team that listens to its feedback!). My first run included the cheesy corn tots because cheesy corn is my guilty pleasure during KBBQ and the bulgogi fried rice as it melds two of my favorite things together with the bonus of a fried egg on top. As a side note you getI a few banchan (Korean side dishes) complementary which include pickled daikon, housemade kimchi and a kale salad of sorts. I have to say I'm not a kale fan but however they prepare this appeases my palette. I decided to be innovative as I used the rice chips from the cheesy corn tots to gather up a mic of the fried rice and tots to make a Korean Nacho haha. My second venture was the kimchi fried rice per recommendation from my server from the first run. Very enjoyable as well. I opted for no apps the second time because they had gotten their desserts in finally. They had a lemon blueberry cheesecake that I had to try. It was fantastic but it's very rich as a warning for those whom have problems with that. Tirimasu is my next dessert I will be after. I think this place is going to be a great addition to the local food scene. I'm looking forward to the future experiences they bring. Found another great Korean restaurant in town. Our server, Tiffany, is friendly. Food is great. We ordered calamari as an appetizer, a seafood tofu soup, and beef fried rice (it also came with miso soup). She also gave us extra bowl of miso soup. It's perfect with this freezing temperature. Every dish we ordered tastes perfect. Toward the end of our dinner, Tiffany brought a bag and ask if we are will to learn something in Korean. We repeated what she said, and got us a couple packets of chocolate. What a great dining experience! Will definitely come back again. read more

My Husband and I had a last minute date night here at Step Bistro. We rarely ever go out and its always a plus when we have great customer service. And Tiffany gave us exceptional service, was very accommodating and overall friendly! The food was good, we had the beef bulgogi! And the sides were probably my favorite! We ended our dinner with Tiffany learning korean words and won a treat after which we really enjoyed! definitely will coming back because of her amazing customer service, thank you again Tiffany!!!! read more

Nice Korean bistro. The vibe in there felt like I was somewhere in LA lol. Really nice interior and nice staff. Food was kind of pricey but yummy. What was not good to me was their water. I went with a whole group and we all thought the water tasted like bad tap water. It didn't taste clean or filtered at all. Almost like they went around the back and got the water from an old hose. But anyway they have a wide selection of food that we didn't try so I'll have to go try it again but will pass on the water. read more

Ok.. I love Korean Food. DH is not as passionate about it. But, I did talk him into trying Step - the new Korean spot in Sparks. We started with the Cheesy Tots and KFC - Korean Fried Chicken (Sweet/Spicy and Honey/Cheese). Both were good - the Tots are so bizarre, but you can't stop eating it. I will have these again. For entrees, I had the Spicy Pork - which I thought was GREAT. He had the Braised Beef - which was not so great. The beef was a tough, grizzly, dry mess. Very surprised. Was it the quality? Was it over cooked? I don't know - but I won't have it again. Service was good and the place was clean with a modern flare. I would go back - and try a few new things. service here was AMAZING. servers are insanely intensive and want to create the best dining experience possible. couldn't say enough about the fantastic service. food itself was not my favorite, tofu soup was by far my favorite and a fantastic dish. but we had the ttebboki and salmon sashimi, both were not my favorite. the salmon was cut too thickly and the sauce wasn't very balanced, it had a strong soy flavor and still had a strong citrus flavor. the balance between them and the salmon flavor was not there. the rice cakes were not that flavorful, compared to the extremely delicious and spicy tofu soup this wasn't able to replicate that. personally i prefer a sweeter and spicier rice cake in general, the rice cakes here just needed some more overall. the ambiance here is cozy and clean, it felt super homey. i had a good time dining here and would try more dishes. read more
