This is a great neighborhood diner restaurant that has been in the neighborhood for years. The service is friendly and it appears to be family run. This is not a Greek restaurant but it has a Greek theme with gyros and baklava. The food is good standard American fare. Breakfast is inexpensive and tasty. Expect to pay half of what you would pay at Perkins or IHOP all while supporting a local community business. I would highly recommend coming her for a Sunday breakfast with the family as it will not break the bank. If not come for a lunch or dinner of open faced turkey or fried chicken. What's not to love about a small town feeling, greasy spoon type, short order cooked meal? I have only eaten breakfast at Stephens and it is always excellent. The home fries are so good and large enough to share. You can get a pancake instead of toast. Do it---it's as big as a dinner plate and very tasty. I had the goetta and cheddar cheese omelet and my husband had the sunrise. His breakfast was 2 eggs any way, choice of meat, home fries and the choice of toast or pancake. My ginormous omelet came with the toast or pancake choice. You even get a shaker of powdered sugar with the pancake. Love. The coffee is very good and my cup was never empty. You won't be disappointed in breakfast at this little spot in Cheviot. read more

My pancake came out hot. I've tried and I've tried to find a place that serves pancakes hot. Think about it. Not many do. And next time you sit down to a short or tall stack, take note. Is it a hot stack? Does the butter melt? And then the syrup came, and it was warm. Goetta, a couple eggs, home fries and coffee all served by Westwood's version of Alice and Flo. This is a hidden gem! Good food, great service, and cheap to boot! Usually we have breakfast here, but on this visit, we decided to have lunch. I ordered the tuna salad on rye with a side of onion rings, and my husband ordered the chicken and dumplings. The tuna salad on my sandwich had a good flavor; not too mayonnaise-y and with a satisfying crunch of relish. The bread was light rye, toasted, and I added a slice of cheese for 40 cents more. I was really happy with my sandwich. It was so filling, I almost regretted ordering the onion rings. The rings were clearly homemade, with no two being the same size, and were deep fried perfectly. I wish they had a thicker layer of breading because the onions kept falling out. A tasty side dish. My husband was not completely happy with his meal because he ordered chicken and dumplings, and instead of dumplings, they used biscuits. The mashed potatoes were good, but the gravy was from a can instead of scratch. We both liked the coleslaw as well. He still cleaned his plate, so I guess he wasn't too picky. Service was great. Our waitress was very friendly and kept our drinks refilled on a regular basis. She was covering the entire room, and no one seemed to be lacking for service. By the end, we were both full, and had a ton of food, plus pop, and it was all less than $20! I wish they had bigger to go cups for the pop, it was a waste of Styrofoam for the 6 oz cup. Either invest in a bigger cup, or don't offer to go beverages. read more

Prices are decent as well. The food was just ok. Not too flavorful, but neither bland. I assume that this place is frequented by elderly couples. There was no one our age there while we were eating. I wish we had places like this on the east side! The day we came the specials were metts and kraut, jack salmon, chicken parm, spaghetti and meatballs, country fried steak, and BBQ dinner, all served with two sides and bread for $6-$7. Others meals in the rotation include cottage game with green beans or boiled cabbage. There's also a good assortment of burgers and double deckers and breakfast anytime (goetta!). I particularly appreciated that the attentive, friendly waitress did not find it necessary to tell me her name, ask me I've been there before, or call us "guys." Cheap, clean and deliciously old fashioned. They DO take credit cards...but at these prices, and considering the 4 percent fee merchants pay, I pay cash. Stephen's Old Village Restaurant is a straight up diner. I enjoy stopping in for breakfast. I've never had anything but the breakfast, but the lunch and dinner menus look expansive with a daily special. The breakfast fare is standard: eggs/meat/bread combinations. The place is located in a teeny strip mall across from the Westwood post office. There is parking, but I would not say it is ample. I've never had to park on the street though. Street parking is available and may be needed in the evenings. I arrive pretty soon after opening and there are usually a few tables already filled. There is always only one waitress and she is on a first name basis with many of her customers. One time I was there and she was cooking in the back and waiting the tables. I think the cook did not show up that day. Anyway, I was impressed with her aplomb. She is very good at keeping my beverage filled, which I always appreciate. I think the best thing about Stephen's, other than the inexpensive filling food, is the atmosphere. Going to Stephen's makes me think of how the west side might have been had I grown up here in the 70s. The old timers hang out in the restaurant and gossip and I love it. I love hearing about so and so doing what the what. There is a real sense of community on the west side that I think I miss because I am not a native. It is probably faded quite a bit from several decades ago, but it is still here. I am still an outsider despite living in Westwood for nearly ten years (and I also don't attend parish in the area, so there is that as well). When I go to Stephen's for breakfast, I eat good diner food and pretend I'm a local. read more
