Visited for the first time. Before arriving, one of their menu appetizers intrigued me: a prime rib egg roll. Staff was friendly and attentive. no complaints. The food selection and taste was just so-so. I asked for hot tea, Earl Grey. "Sorry, we only have Lipton." Hmm... I had the prime rib eggs rolls. They are a cheese steak wrapped in an egg roll wrapper and deep fried. The was a sauce on the plate under the egg rolls. The sauce had no flavor. I had to look at the menu; it supposedly was horseradish sauce. There was absolutely no flavor of horseradish or spicy bite. I also had the prime rib sandwich. I keep wanting this place to be good but just disappointed every time we go (about 2-3 times a year). After our last horrible experience, we went back with some friends. The music is always nice (but loud). Our guests said they liked their crab cakes and scallops dish. My stuffed chicken was dry and flavorless (and not stuffed-should change the name). Chicken Stephan was was ok but would go better with risotto rather than watery mashed potatoes. Waitress looked like she wished she was somewhere else. Very average service. Tip was included in our bill (extra $2 bc it was calculated with tax). Was charged an extra 3% for using credit card. That alone is reason for us not to want to come back. My dinner tonight, in short, was a hot mess. Everything started great, but quickly went downhill. We started with salads which were great. My mom had a steak which was over cooked and I had scallops which had way too much black pepper on them. When we got our check, we let the server know we had a Groupon, and he made it clear that he was less than thrilled (I'm a server too and I totally get it... when customers have coupons you can almost guarantee they won't leave a full tip, but you still don't get to act like a dick). He rolled his eyes in my face and made it really difficult to use the coupon. My mom didn't read the fine print, but we were willing to spend the full $100 required and he was so rude about it. We ordered desserts we didn't want in order to get to $100 and my mom got coffee, which did not come with cream. At the end, our check came out to $96.25 (we had to spend $100) and our server bluntly said "well you didn't spend $100 so you can't use this". I almost lost my mind. At the end of the day, he charged us for an extra $3.75 and let us use the coupon. This is a bummer for me because I've been to Stephen's for happy hour a ton of times and have always loved it, but tonight's awful service and mediocre food will likely keep me from coming back. read more

Probably the most disappointing dining experience ever from what toutes itself as a fine dining steakhouse. So I ordered the 18 oz. Black Angus Steak, cooked medium, from their special menu. What I got was none of those things. Not Black Angus. Not 18 oz. Not medium. Meals came out at different times. Waitress was very apologetic and offered to take it back so they could cook it some more. Really? For a $46 steak. I could have done better at Outback. Offered something to make up for the mess, but we declined. Nonetheless, she brought us two cups of soup to go as a peace offering. Didn't think it would get worse until that lame gesture. Oh well. Stephen's On State welcomes you with a charming atmosphere and kind servers/hosts. Everyone had a great positive attitude and was very nice. It took a long time to get our appetizer but the crab spinach dip was insanely good. My steak was tender and delicious, my girlfriends chicken parm was great, and the sides (mashed potatoes and green beans) were excellent. My husband and I have dined here three times in total and every time we are there there is an issue with the service/our orders. The food is good, which is what keeps us coming back but last night we went with a friend who was visiting from out of town and we were very disappointed. The restaurant was not very busy, more empty than crowded, and I saw other servers continuously throughout the dining room, but our server was never to be seen. Every time my husband ordered a beer the waitress came back to tell us, "Oops, that beer is actually not on draft any longer." The list needs to be updated. My friend and I each ordered a steak, I ordered the ribeye with the add-on of five shrimp. My husband ordered the Caprese salad that was on special and salmon. Our food took an inordinate amount of time to come out while everybody around us was getting their food. When the food did come out, my husband got his Caprese salad, but no salmon. She completely forgot to put his order in. She offered to go put it in, but at that point we already had our steaks and he did not want us to have to wait for another meal to be prepared. So I shared my steak with him. I paid for the 5 shrimp add on, but there were only 3 pieces of shrimp on my steak. The green beans that came with it were totally gross. Definitely not fresh. They seemed like they were canned. We all three order dessert after dinner and I feel like my husband should've at least gotten a free dessert seeing that the waitress completely forgot to order his food. My husband got the tiramisu and my friend got the apple tart and I ordered a piece of cheesecake that was possibly less than a third of the size of each of their desserts. It was the smallest piece of cake I've ever seen in my life. I even commented to the waitress as to why on earth my piece of dessert was so much smaller than the other two desserts... she really didn't have anything to say about it, but our guess was that it was the end of the cheesecake and I just got whatever little piece was left... It was also falling apart on my plate. We are going now with the idea of three strikes and you're out... It was the third time dining there and the third time with mess ups... Each time we're there the mess ups get more and more and more and last night was really just unacceptable. I'm giving it two stars because my steak was really good and we enjoyed the brussels sprouts that we had as an appetizer. read more

This place is the worst. Horrible management. Horrible staff. Totally incompetent. A complete embarrassment to the Borough of Media. The manager herself is disrespectful and condescending. Upscale? According to who? Them? Absolute let down. They gave away an order to the wrong person somehow, after saying wait time would be 25 mins. 40 mins later, the food (4 entrées, $100+) is gone. Handed to the wrong person. And they refused to do anything about it. I would rather order food from McDonald's. At least I know what I'm getting (or not getting ) from McDonald's. The staff was very friendly and ordering and pick up easy, however I got the Surf and Turf Special for $64.00 which I thought would be a good size but the Lobster was so Tiny and the meat was not that big of a portion. My fiancé and I have come here many times for lunch and it's been up and down but yesterday took the cake for the worst yet. We ordered the prime rib egg rolls, baked clams, and bacon wrapped shrimp to start. 30 mins later the drinks and the apps arrived. The egg rolls were out of this world good and that's where it stopped. The baked clams had zero seasoning and flavor and the shrimp was over cooked. For entree's I ordered the BBQ burger with fries and that was good. My fiancé ordered the crab cake for lunch and crab cakes (dinner portion) came out. No taste, loaded with filler, and over done. The asparagus tasted like no seasoning and days old. That came out over an hour after the apps. We ordered a side of mashed and the entree came with them. The mashed potatoes that came with her meal and the extra order wasn't seasoned with anything. The most bland I've ever "tried" to eat. We got a Groupon and told the waitress Bella in the beginning before we received any food or drink and that had an effect with the "service" we received. She was non existent forgetful of simple things such as condiments and silverware. After lunch we wanted to have dessert after not being able to eat most of the food we ordered. We ordered the creme brûlée and hot lava cake. Both were nothing to write home about. After we ordered the dessert Bella told us that there would be an automatic gratuity added because we have a Groupon. We told her we understood and we don't not tip 20% all the times anyway but when we finally got the bill "FOR LUNCH" with lunch prices our bill was almost $170 with a 20% tip for a waitress who literally avoided us by walking back to the kitchen from the other side of the restaurant multiple times where we were sitting so long for her to even come and pick up the check. I had to take the check to the front and asked the greeter to run my card. In all we were there for over 2 hours for lunch and $170 for 2 people. There were only 3 tables and a couple of people in the bar section. Lunch is supposed to be a semi quick outing and reasonably priced which it certainly wasn't. read more

The food comes out 30+ minutes apart and it's simply bad. I would recommend the espresso martini (without Bailey's) annnnddd that's it. The ahi tuna tastes like it was caught in 2020 and then frozen until the best by date. Stephen's is what it is: a local establishment that will always be there. We've had everything from steaks to salads over the years and find all dishes unremarkable but good. The ambiance is dark and decor is a little dated. Friendly patrons at the bar is nice. Service is hit or miss but mostly just okay. It's tough to pay those entre prices for just okay food and service in a dark restaurant. But they seem to stay busy so definitely give them a shot and see what you think. read more

Ordered thru Uber Eats last night (Sunday) Crab cake plate came with whipped potatoes and asparagus. Let me tell you about the French onion soup...covered in melted swiss. Nothing compares...! Just had dinner with my husband and son and our bill was a little under $200. The onion soup and wedge salads were very good. Our cocktails were fine. However my filet (medium plus) was super charred and very tough. I ate half and gave up. My husband had the scallops with risotto. The dish was super salty but he did eat the scallops leaving the risotto which was actually a little crunchy. My son had the ribeye which was medium rare and very tough. He left more than half. We won't be back unfortunately. We did share our feedback and proof (our dishes) and we were offered two desserts which were fine. Surprised the manager didn't at least come to the table - let alone offer to take something off. I wish I had read the Yelp reviews before coming. Just glad we had a Groupon deal and the wait staff were very good. read more

Stephen's is very cute inside, and it seemed like a bit of a fancier dining choice for State Street. However, my lunch yesterday left a lot to be desired. The worst part was that my crab soup was sweet. Like, unbearably sweet. When I tasted it I literally said "wow, this is sweet." My husband replied to me that crab meat is naturally sweet (duh) but a few minutes later when he traded his clam chowder with me (because he's chivalrous) he was also astonished by how sugary the soup was. It was not just from the crab meat. The clam chowder was better than the crab soup, for sure. I think that was probably the best part of the meal for me. My Tuscan flatbread, which was supposed to have artichokes, spinach, roasted red peppers, and fontina cheese on it basically turned out to be a floppy tortilla covered with cheese; it was something that I would make for my 3-year old nephew. My husband got the crab cake sandwich and it was fine. Just fine. For a $53.00 lunch, I was incredibly let-down. Everything was very underwhelming and anti-climactic. Lastly, the waiter seemed to be so sweet and attentive that it was borderline inauthentic. If you're a Downton Abbey fan, I will compare him to Thomas Barrow. I was stunned that Mother Day brunch was $50 each when I got the bill. WHAT A RIP OFF!! My 12 year old daughter only had a bowl of fruit. All they served was bacon and eggs. I've lived not five miles away from this restaurant for 47 years yet never been in it. What a shame for me because I think it's one of the best around. My son is engaged to a beautiful girl. On 5/16/19 her mother and grandmother took me here to get better acquainted. The dinners were incredible. Mine was seafood Bucatini, a combination of seafoods with a round pasta in clear broth. The gal had a Chicken Stephen. Her grandmother had steak and her mother, the Seafood Alfredo. All of us raved about our meals. I've only one complaint and that's the live entertainment which interfered so much with our talking we decided to leave. Well, I've never had a place go off a cliff in my ratings so quickly. Almost like Romney's support for a health care plan. We went there with Tango my Black Lab on a gorgeous late Spring afternoon and three people. Plenty of al fresco tables. The Maitre D', however, was intent on making people feel ill at ease. We were told that al fresco dining was only for two people (all the al fresco restaurants within a block had four-toppers) and that anyway, we weren't welcome because we had a dog and they were no longer dog friendly. Ordered uber eats and I should've read the Yelp reviews first. The portions were small but the food wasn't great so didn't want to eat it anyway. The chowder was sweet and was missing crab and really not much corn either. The ahi had something that tasted like bbq sauce and some gross green stuff. The slices of the ahi were thin so the sear felt more like it was fully cooked. Plus the order looked un appetizing. My picture speaks volumes mind you, didn't do anything to the food or eat anything until after photo. I rarely leave bad reviews but for a $30 meal I need to warn others. There's a reason this place only has a 2.5 star average rating. My mom and her friend went out to eat here and were met with rude a rude server and manager who could care less about it. Not to mention the food was hot garbage. Their server, a blonde woman, stormed off with my mom's sautéed spinach after she complained about it not being good and she never came back with a replacement and didn't even ask her if she waned to order something else. They ended up ordering gelato to-go at the end of their awful experience and paid $8 for a condiment sized container that held maybe two bites. We walked in and got seated immediately, which was nice. The salads (Caesar and Iceberg Wedge) were delicious, but when it came to the entree, it went downhill. We ordered the 18oz ribeye special and the flavors were good, but we only were able to chew and swallow a few bites of it. My plate was just about a third of the way covered in chewed up, tough meat. I know ribeye is naturally a fatty cut, but marbeling doesn't equal tough. USDA Prime ribeye doesn't come super tough like that especially when its cooked mid-rare, none that I've gotten before. The asparagus was well undercooked and was somehow hard to cut through, and the horseradish potato wedges had a good horseradish flavor but were begging for some salt.
