This review is for a new Mitsubishi heat pump installation and gas furnace replacement. After last year's high gas bill during the winter I decided to replace my old attic installed gas furnace for something more efficient with AC capabilities. I already had 1 zone Mitsubishi 9K ductless unit for my office that works great. Our house has 3 bedrooms (upstairs) and a main living area (downstairs). I wanted a system that would allow me to individually control the different spaces. I got 4 bids, one of them my pervious HVAC contractor (cheapest bid). Poncho came onsite and look at everything. He was the only one that gave me a great solution to drain the condensation line.. everyone else wanted to run a long line to the bottom of the house which would not look too good. Poncho suggested we tie into the bathroom drain which was behind the same wall were the outdoor unit would be.. He came back again when I asked to look at the existing ducts for downstairs in order to re-use them. Ryan at the office was great and after some negotiation and clearing a couple things they sent me a proposal that I thought was fair. We went with a 48K BTU outdoor unit, 2x6K BTU and 1 9K BTU indoor split units and a 24K BTU air handler were we had the previous furnace to supply heat and cool to the first floor. I took advantage of a great 0% interest for 18 month finance offer and I was surprised when they told me they could install it the following week. I picked a perfect time I guess.. On Monday Poncho, Freddy and the crew arrived promptly . Some material showed up and it was time for them to look at everything and secure some supplies. The next day about 5 or 6 Vans from Stephen's plumbing showed up and a good amount of people worked through the day to do the heavy lifting stuff.. They hoisted the big outdoor unit, remove old furnace and capped the gas line, installed head units, etc.. the next 2-3 days it was mainly Poncho, Freddy and a couple other guys running lines and doing everything lese. Poncho did a great job running the electrical conduit from my panel to the outdoor unit, he did not rush and did a great job. They were all great but Poncho and Freddy were very detailed oriented. Everyone was very clean and every day before working they would protect the floor and they would clean before leaving making sure my carpet was not damaged. Freddy would always ask If I had any questions. All work was completed by Friday. The system is great.. It is super silent, you can't hear the outdoor and I have great temperature control in all bedrooms and downstairs. This is the good thing about the system.. We never use all of it at the same time so I feel it is very efficient. We did it properly and pulled permits and did HERS testing. All went fine with the inspection and Ryan is working on securing some of the California tax credits because we replaced a gas furnace with a heat pump. This week Poncho came back to install the Kumo cloud on my air handler as I wanted to be able to control it from my phone. Overall good experience during the sales portion. Mitsubishi has great warranty and I think they are better systems than Daikin and others. Stephens Plumbing also provides a good Workmanship warranty. This was a big project for me, it was not cheap, probably overkill as I could have gone with a dual zone using my ducts but I am happy with the work that Stephens Plumbing did. read more

My AC went out at 7pm during recent heat advisory. I called at least 6 places listed as having 24 emergency services available. Stephens Plumbing were the only ones who said they could be there that night. I expected it would be a few hours but tech was at my house within an hour. He was professional, had appropriate PPE and engaged in his work. Based on my description over the phone he was fairly certain of the problem and fairly sure he'd have the part. It was what he thought and he had the part. He was finished within 30-40 minutes. It was worth every penny for the emergency service call which I might add I thought reasonably priced for emergency call. Happy to see a business that's professional and has great customer service. I called Stephen's plumbing for a quote on clearing my clogged shower drain. They quoted me $125 so I agreed to schedule for them to come out. When the technicians came out they said it was going to cost $250 to snake my shower drain. I had to send them away and this created such a huge inconvenience for me due to them providing me with a misleading price quote over the phone and then price gauging me in person. read more

Oscar is the best! We thought the A/C needed repair, and the heater needed a full replacement. Oscar took only a few minutes to discover that BOTH the A/C and Heater could be easily fixed, and it would only take a short amount of time to do it. Our rental house had AC problem and got an estimate from SoCal Plumbing, Heating Andy AC. Tenant was told that the AC was sooooo old that it has to be replaced and gave a quote for $9,000.00. But if we wanted to fix the problem, it would cost $2600.00. My husband ended up calling Stevens plumbing and heating and Pablo came out that same day and told us that the AC was 2 years old! These guys installed a water heater for us 2.5 years ago. Instead of installing the proper water heater, they went ahead and decided to install a commercial water heater into a residential home. We were told that everything was the same and that there were no downside to using a commercial unit. What they don't tell you is that the commercial units have a significantly shorter warranty than the residential (Only 1 year parts and 3 years heater vs 3 year parts and 6 years heater). So fast forward 2 and half years later, we have a parts issue with the burner and for the average person with a residential unit and warranty it would have been an easy parts replacement covered by the manufacturer. Instead we are stuck with an $800 part replacement. read more

Summary: Very professional. Technicians know their stuff and do it well. Office staff called me same day after reaching out for a quote. Prices seem reasonable for HVAC install (especially compared to Costco). Omar (especially), Chris, Freddy, and Oscar were great. If you want to skip the back story, jump to the *** My wife and I used to live in Lomita and had Stephens over for small repairs twice. They always did the job well and my only qualm was with the service price being a little higher than I expected; but again, quality of work was top notch. Our current story starts with Costco for HVAC install. We contacted them during the 15% cash back thing (usually it's 10%) and had a technician from AZ Air Conditioning (their chosen contractor) come to do the estimate. He looked around our home, assessed where the installation could go on our property, then wrote up a quote for around $10,300 for a 4 ton unit based on our square footage. I should have been more suspicious that he didn't check out the central heater in our attic at all... A few months later, we got approval from the HoA for installation and so I emailed him back asking some questions, then never heard back. I followed up again, then contacted the company through the website instead. Finally, a manager got back to me, apologized that the emails weren't going through since they changed providers, then followed up with a discounted estimate of around $9800 (before cash back). She sent the original technician back over to confirm everything and start the paperwork since it had been a few months and this time he did a more thorough analysis and discovered a problem: our heater was a 3 ton unit, but the initial estimate was for 4 tons. He then provided two estimates, one for just the AC for 3 tons, and then one for the AC and heater being replaced at 4 tons (which was closer to $14,000). They also suggested that we replace our heater since it is 11 years old (even though I doubt it has been used much and still functions really well), so we were very close to actually replacing the heater with a 3 ton and adding the AC when I decided to reach out to Stephens and another company for additional estimates. The other company estimated around $13K and didn't even bother to come out for an analysis. *** When I submitted the Stephens website contact form they called me back a couple of hours later and scheduled a visit to do an estimate that afternoon after work. That's when Omar came out and shattered my reality. He went into the attic and crawled around, analyzed the existing ducts, went outside to where the unit was going to be installed and expressed concern about running the tubing up the wall and into the attic, went back upstairs to the rooms under the attic and talked about the drainage that had to feed into a sink drain and how that would be challenging to do without cutting open the wall, etc. He said that based on our ducting there was no way we'd be able to output 4 tons let alone 3. He even called to confirm specs based on the sizes of are ducts and the amount of air that can be displaced by the three lines that we had. None of this had been mentioned by AZ, and it all made sense. Then he asked what we were quoted, laughed, and said it will be much less. Indeed it was. Around $7200 for a 3 ton unit and labor, with an electrician to run the dedicated line in our garage to the unit on the other side of a major wall. I scheduled the appointment a couple of weeks later and they spent two days doing the installation; four guys came the first day, three the second with two electricians. Everyone was very nice, professional, kept things clean, and worked hard to get the installation done with minimal damage to the home and exterior. When all was said and done, the installation looked seamless and the AC seems to be working well (albeit with a bit of a rumble from vibration). We are excited to have it, and feel good about the 1 year warranty on labor and 10 year warranty on parts that comes with it. We'd definitely recommend Stephens, and I'll report back when we start getting some real usage going during the Summer. read more

My experience with Stephens Plumbing & Heating couldn't have gone any better! My home's central A/C stopped working about two months ago and I was dreading having to get it fixed. These repairs can get pretty expensive and it's hard to find trustworthy businesses who can help. I made a call to Stephens and was able to get someone to take a look the same day, almost within the hour. It was great! When Matt arrived, he quickly got to work and was able to diagnose the issue. Our gardener accidentally ran over the main sprinkler valve so after the water department shut the water off I called Stevens. Rico came out the next morning and was beyond helpful. He could have taken one look at the old pipes and recommended replacing the entire main line however spent the extra time carefully working with the rusted out pipes and found a solutionist that saved us a few thousand dollars. Stephens Plumbing replaced our toilet. They did a professional job but the plumber dishonestly tried to charge me for 8 hours when he arrived at 10AM and left at 4:30 with a 1/2 hour lunch. I paid only for the 6 hours. He was gone getting parts for 2 hours and charged full rate for that time. He charged for the 15 minutes to rearrange his truck and also charged me for the 15 minutes it took for him to make the bill. Another Stephens plumber was here 2 weeks ago and told me they charge $135 per hour. Today without prior notice this plumber charged $165 per hour. I am disappointed. It may just be this one employee or maybe he was feeling pressured to generate more income. I will not go back to Stephens Plumbing. read more

I've had a couple experiences with these guys. In summary, their management/back-office and scheduling is a mess, but their HVAC guys are pros. First experience was for HVAC. The guys that came out were pro's and very friendly. They did some testing, found no issues, and went on their way. I tried to bring them out a second time for plumbing. They were at my location, telling me no one answered the door when they knocked repeatedly. My tenant tells me she never heard knocking. Not sure who to believe. So I rescheduled to yesterday at 2, making sure my tenant was there. Got a voicemail from their scheduling department saying "sorry, wont be there until after 4". No mention of a "please call us back"... I never heard back from Stephens, in fact. My tenant called me late last night asking why they didn't show. So I called Stevens this morning, and they immediately went on the defensive saying "well your tenant wasn't there the earlier this week" (which has nothing to do with their no-show on the reschedule) and "we didn't hear back from you so we didn't go" (again, no mention to "call us back" in the "we'll be late" voicemail). Skip these guys, there are better service providers out there. read more

I've been using Stephen's Plumbing for years. They've always done an excellent job. The office answers promptly and they come as scheduled. As well as doing great work they are neat, courteous and professional. Unfortunately for me, my heating/AC unit had finally died.....big ticket item. Rob from Stephen's looked at the unit, explained it wasn't fixable and gave me an estimate which was appropriate for the job, especially since it involved signing a crane to hoist up the unit. The next week Rob came with Trevor and Freddy came as scheduled along with the crane. They did a fabulous job in much less time than I had anticipate. I live in a condo and one of my neighbors is very nosy and interfering. I let them know I didn't want him asking questions or disturbing them. Sure enough he did, but they handled the matter politely and firmly and he backed off. Next thing I know, he's inquiring about having them replace his unit as well!
