This food is not Asian. That being said, it was not good either. I ordered off the traditional menu, and opted for the spicy szechuan. My vegetables and tofu were mediocre at best inside of a tasteless and NOT spicy sauce. It was overpriced for the bland food that I received. The small rice bowl was not any compensation. I can easily make my own sticky rice at home in my own rice cooker. My husband opted for sweet and sour chicken which he said was "good". On a better note, we ordered the chicken lettuce wraps which sadly, had more taste than my main dish did. The wraps were okay overall, but nothing that I couldn't have made myself at home. read more

I don't know if I've just been spoiled with good Asian food but this was horrid. My parents, sister and I stopped by after a day of shopping excited to give it a try and we were so disappointed that my parents didn't even touch their plate!! EVERYTHING IS SOAKED IN SOY SAUCE. SOAKKKKKED. If you're down for super salty food then you'll love it. Their fried rice was an upcharge and just tasted like burned egg with salty rice. Inedible. I asked for no seasoning or anything on our steaks to try and avoid the disaster we tasted with the rice and vegetables. I ASKED WHILE HE WAS PREPARING THE STEAK and he forgot... as he placed the meat on our plate he goes "oh.. you said no sauces." Great, now we have soy sauce steaks.. again. The portion was terrible and on top of that we asked for medium rare and had fully cooked rock steaks. The final straw for me was when the waiter took my water cup to what I assume was to refill and never saw it again. I would have asked for mywater if I saw her during the duration of the meal but she didn't come around until I was basically finished and I had to flag her down. We will never return. I went for Father's Day. 2/3 of us were vegan so my first comment is this is not a vegan or vegetarian friendly place. The only thing we were able to eat was the tempura sushi roll which was good but not amazing. They tried to help us out with adjustments but in the end we left hungry and disappointed. My dad who is not vegan also did not enjoy his food. The rice was burnt, the veggies were undercooked even though the grill was on so high. They rush through the cooking. The place is dirty with the floors being wet and slippery. Our waiter was very sweet but the management team is definitely taking plenty of shortcuts to make money and not give the customers an amazing experience. I do not recommend this place. read more

Food was good, waitress was nice. I'm a restaurant owner and noticed a few things that annoyed me about the employees. First of all they play too much. They were messing around in front of customers and a few times I heard loud laughter in the kitchen which makes me think the staff doesn't take food prep seriously. Stix is definitely one of the "BEST SUSHI" restaurant in Kansas City. I had to go back for second round in less than a week. My job requires me to travel and I happens to noticed the restaurant parking lot was almost full around 12:30 pm. Waitresses were very nice and spoke perfect English and was very helpful with menu. It is very traditional sushi restaurant so, you wont be disappointed. On the side note: Music was very suiting. And the bathroom was so nice. I also peaked into the kitchen and was so clean. I spent my birthday at Stix and LOVED it. We sat at the sushi bar and the guy making the rolls, sushi and sashimi was super friendly and the size of the portions were larger than I expected and have been served at other places. The food was fresh and affordable. The guy making our sushi made me a special spicy seafood salad I absolutely loved. I recommend this place to people who love Sushi, portions are good and price is reasonably affordable without quality being compromised. Walked in with my girlfriend for a quick sushi lunch. Expecting to spend maybe an hour. We were seated by the manager who had food covered fingers from his lunch which smeared our menus. After asking for a clean menu and getting our drinks, we proceeded to wait 20 minutes in a mostly empty restaurant with NO interaction from our waitress whatsoever. It was 100 degrees outside and it didn't even feel like they had the air on. People were literally wiping sweat off of their face at the table.. We had a 6:30 pm reservation for my nephew's birthday and at 7:15 they told us it would be another 30-45 minutes. We understand that sometimes you have to wait, but we saw several other large parties get seated before us. The other problem was the extremely rude high school kids they have working as hosts. They were the most condescendingly rude bunch of kids I've ever dealt with. So disappointing and they ruined our evening. I will never visit this establishment again. read more

Evil Hibachi Dude!!!!!! Not the best Hibachi I've ever had but not the worst. The salad dressing was not as good as it had been in the past maybe skimping on the ginger or something. There was plenty of food, enough to eat the next day, in fact more rice than I would eat. The reason I'm giving it 2 stars is the aggressive server. I had been to Stix before and not experienced this but Sunday evening was different. It was just me & my sister at the table. Normally, I don't mind trying to catch shrimp. He hurled a couple at my sister and she caught one. Then it was my turn. I missed 2, he did not give me a chance to get ready again. After my second try he in rapid succession fired 3 more at my face. One almost hit me in the eye. It was intimidating and inappropriate. I honestly was to shell shocked, to say anything that evening. When I called today and asked to talk to the manager, Kim stated that sometimes they do that to the men but not usually the women. She said she would talk to them. We went as a group of 8, had a reservation for 7pm. Arrived on time, even a few minutes early, and still had to wait 10+ minutes for our table to be made ready in a half-empty dining room. The food was very good - our main problem was the service. First, the waiter totally forgot to put in my drink order, had to remind him. No big deal. Then the food comes out and half of my order (had ordered 2 sushi rolls) is missing. I had to flag down the waiter several minutes later to remind him, he disappeared for several minutes more and came back to say that the kitchen had put my roll on the plate of someone else in our party. Ordinarily I'd roll with it (no pun intended) but I don't really know the other guy and he'd already picked at it, so I had to ask the waiter to please just get me a new plate of what I ordered. Then! The waiter comes and tells the other guy, I'm sorry, I need to take the mistake-roll away or else we'll have to charge you for it. This person had two rolls on his plate, one he ordered and one he didn't - the waiter insisted on taking the ENTIRE PLATE back to the kitchen to scrape off the incorrect one, and bring it back after he was done. WTF? "Hey, we made a mistake, but let me take the dinner you're not done eating back to the kitchen for a few minutes." My dinner finally came out after everyone else was done eating. We asked for a manager and she said it really was their policy to have to take 'wrong' food back to the kitchen. She didn't want to offer a discount for either that or the many mistakes the waiter made on my drink/dinner, but we politely insisted and she took off 50% of my food only. Nigiri is good but not great. I can say the tuna is above average. And the red dragon roll I'd say it's a 7 out of 10. Good food but we did spend $85 for a family of four. AARG! I don't think I've written a bad review yet BUT this one has to be done! The only thing good about my experience was my date, and a first date at that! What made this experience so extremely frustrating is how badly I wanted to lash out an complain, but for first date appearances I painfully restrained myself. We had to wait a good 10 minutes to be seated on a Wednesday, even when over half the restaurant was empty. Once we were seated we waited over 15 minutes to get any service, not even water. Our server seemed to have too many table or something because throughout our whole experience we maybe saw her 3 times. We had planned on ordering an appetizer as well as wine, but our sever took our paper sushi menu and didn't even try and upsale us at anything. I told her I wanted to order wine with my meal but by the time she came back we had already finished our meal. So it was a cheap meal at least, only 23 bucks. We ordered Pad Thai with tofu and vegetables, chicken noodle bowl, and satay chicken. The only thing that was edible was the satay chicken. The noodle bowl came with wilted lettuce as a garnish, and the texture of the chicken made us question what it was until we tasted it, and it sort of tasted like chicken. The pad thai tasted like most pad thai at other places, but my meal ended suddenly when I found a moldy piece of onion. The staff then proceeded to tell me the brownish-grayish colored spots of mold were red chili flakes that were overcooked. If you're out in the far-flung reaches of KCK, perhaps on a trip to Nebraska Furniture Mart as we were, this is a great alternative to all the corporate restaurants. We ate in the main section of the restaurant, it had a lovely ambiance, nice lighting, and a hip bar area near the entry. Our waitress was very helpful and even went so far as to warn me that my selected menu item (Singapore Noodles) wasn't generally a guest favorite. You can read this two ways- one, the food isn't that great, or two, she's looking out for her customers. I went with the second reading and changed my order and was quite happy that I did. The Moo Shu Tofu in Pancakes was faaantastic. Perfectly cooked veggies, nice big chunks of tofu, well spiced sauce, and fresh Asian pancakes. Perfect. The Honey Crispy Shrimp that the spouse ordered was really good as well, and served on a light bed of crispy rice sticks with a side of fried rice. Tasty. On previous visits we've had the sushi, which is as good as most places in the U.S., and my family has enjoyed the meat dishes that they've ordered, particularly the Chicken Lo Mein. I know that other reviewers criticize that this isn't "authentic" Asian food, and I don't disagree, but really let's be honest with ourselves- first of all, "authentic" is a loaded term and authenticity is constantly shifting in meaning, and second, this is a mall in the exurbs, it's all a constructed corporate facade. Think of it as Asian Fusion, then you don't have to fret about the authenticity of it and can just enjoy some tasty food. I wouldn't make the drive all the way out here just to eat at Stix, but if in the area I'm happy to make it my go-to restaurant. read more

This place has gone downhill. The salad bowl was carried out on top of the soup bowl and was filled to the brim with a runny dressing. I looked up at the hooded vent over our table and there was grease dripping down. The table surrounding the grill was burnt and buckling. I am really torn on the rating of this place. I am going with three stars for right now. This place could easily have a 5 star rating because their food is pretty good. They have Hibachi Grill, Sushi Bar and a regular sit and eat all in one. The caliber of Sashimi is very high and tasty. We took some friends who had never been there and they thoroughly enjoyed it. The hot & sour soup is probably one of the best in the area. It is made with chicken instead of rat or some other meat that looks really weird. Did I just gross you out? Sorry. Anyway, we got there at about 1pm and there was a small group ahead of us waiting for Hibachi. We were next and there were 10 of us. We waited for 20 minutes for a table. Now the seating area is blocked off by the bar. I thought there were a lot of people seated and the waiters were overwhelmed so that we could not sit down. Well, come to find out once we were seated that the regular dining area was pretty much empty. There were a couple of tables filled but that was it. It made me really mad because they were trying to make it seem as though they were super busy and important when really they could've sat us down immediately. I know that's a ploy that some restaurants try to use to seem as though they are high-end but let's be serious here. If your food is that good you will not have a problem with appearing too busy; you will be busy! The food took forever to come out. I remember looking at my watch and it was 1:53p when we finally got our food. That really upset the table. Aside from that they are somewhat expensive. I can go to Haru's and order two rolls for $9.95. I spend $9.95 here for just one roll, but I have to admit that they were really good. I had the Las Vegas, a friend of mine had the Yummy and Tuna Tataki. We chowed down like some psychos from 2083. Overall it was a good place to eat, but I would definitely stop at Sakura or Harus before traveling to the Legends for some Sushi. read more

We tried the Asian wok menu and unfortunately both of the plates we got were terribly bland. First of all, let me say that the star rating system is a little misleading. (ie two negative stars and three positives) However, I hope to help the average joe or jane understand what to expect at Stix at Villiage West. Our party of two showed up at 2:30 and we decided to eat at the Teppanyaki/Hibachi grill. Here's what we ordered: Fried Calamari Godzilla Roll KC Strip w/ Onion Soup, Fried Rice, and Hot Tea Hibachi Shrimp w/ Onion Soup, Fried Rice, and Tea First, the Calamari: Typically what you would expect from a mid-level dining experience. It was well cooked with a good presentation, but the breading was bland and the chili sauce nearly flavorless. I chose to dip my calamari in the soy at the table. It was okay, I guess. I've had better. The Godzilla roll was excellent, and the artfully crafted piece of squash was appealing to the palate and eyes. The onion soup was bland and darn near room temperature. I could probably recreate this at home with beef stock with a small amount of green onions. The contents reminded me a little of potsticker sauce but with less onions. I wasn't impressed, even in the slightest. The hot tea was delicious, but served in a plain coffee cup. It's almost like they didn't even try to make it seem Asian. As to be expected for coming at a dead time of day, my companion didn't have to wait for refills of the iced tea, which was also tasty. Before I continue, I must say: I don't expect to hear god-awful pop music when dining in a Asian cuisine restaurant. I hope the owners look into that. The music was too loud and obtrusive to our dining experience. I'd prefer to have it off. The timing of the courses was completely off. We had the soup, just a few minutes later, the sushi roll, a few minutes later, the calamari appetizer. It was hard to watch the chef (Chef Wu) cook our meal. That's all he did. He cooked our meal. No witty banter, no parlor tricks, no juggling, nothing. I was genuinely disappointed. The hibachi table next to ours got quite a show, with a huge fireball (fire, fire!), some casual humor about the ingredients, and some friendly conversation. It's almost as though our chef didn't even want to be here. Again, I am disappointed. I ordered my steak medium-rare, I got a medium. I would have been okay with that, if he hadn't cut my steak into pieces. It is very important that a steak rest after cooking to retain those delicious juices. I can cut my own steak. The shrimp was tasty, but the quantity was a little small. The vegetables (squash, onions, and mushrooms) were very good and the sauce they were cooked with was excellent. I have no problem with the fried rice, it was delicious, and for me, the star of the meal. If I go again, I'll order this and sushi. The waitress was polite, but not overly so. Much like the chef, it's like she didn't want to be there, either. However, she was quick to refill our beverages and take our empty plates away. So, Stix earns two stars from me for the following reasons: 1. No ambiance whatsoever. (the god-awful music, bright lighting) 2. Meh service from the waitstaff and chef. I want a show with my food if I'm eating at a Hibachi style joint! 3. Food was good but not overly so. Someone needs to show them how to use spices. I left stuffed and satisfied. Fried rice was the star of the show. 4. The sushi was good, but for a good sampling I'll have to go back. 5. Prices were a bit high for what you get, especially the calamari. We ordered out from Stix last week as we're staying at Residence Inn next door while waiting for our house to be ready and it was ok. Strolled the (2) kids down for lunch today while my husband was at work and it was dead. There might have been 5 customers in the entire place. They literally put my name on a "list" and we waited to be seated. The three people who came in after us were seated pretty quickly. After 15 minutes of waiting my son started freaking out that he was still just sitting in a stroller. I walked out of there and won't be back. I love Asian cuisine but not horrible customer service. Stix is located in the legends, which has several dining option, but stix is worth a try. A small bar greets diners, with a sushi bar off to the right, general dining off to the left, with two areas of hibachi grills. I will start by saying I've only eaten lunch here, and only sushi. The lunch menu offers the usual specials, a choice of two rolls and soup or salad for $11. I'm not sure if this is a fair overall assessment, but the lunch special rolls are average, run of the mill offerings. I had the California roll and the spicy shrimp roll, both were fine, nothing special. My buddy had the spicy shrimp toll and the spicy crab roll, he found both very tasty and enjoyed them. As someone that eats sushi a couple times a week, I was not expecting an outstanding meal, as the tasty rolls generally show up at night. When we spoke with the staff they just made excuses on why we would have to wait an hour and half to be seated. I would have respected them more if they had been honest that they made a mistake.
