The food is good, if not spectacular--the grilled cauliflower has always been a favorite of mine--but what really stands out is the caliber of the staff. I belong to a group that eats at Stone Fire Grille in Ventura twice a month; invariably, the order takers, the servers, and all the other employees are warm, friendly, and courteous. They couldn't be more helpful and they respond to any concerns promptly and politely. First time to a stonefire and the food was amazing but what was even better was the customer service I received from Christina! She went above and beyond to make sure she checked back in with us. The Lemon Garlic chicken was amazing, She offered us dessert however we were so full we couldn't even think about eating more, she did recommend the carrot cake for next time though! I also have some food sensativites and she's went above and beyond by asking the chef all the questions I had. Honestly, I don't know how these people do it. My wife and I don't like to spend $40-$50 for a night out. We just had dinner at Stonefire in Fountain Valley. Elise served us both at the order counter and bringing food to the table. That's a nice touch. Our dinner came to $22.00, and we had 1/2 chicken, breadsticks, mashed potatoes, Ceasar salad and two drinks. First class BBQ food and service. We go there about once every week and a half. Hunger pains. That's how this story starts. That's also what leads people to choose bad decisions food wise. This would be one of those times. Pulling into a place with multiple food choices we decided on Stonefire Grill. The names exudes a promise of tasty fired food stuff and man - we were hungry. As we walked in there was a couple in front of us and a single server going over things on the menu. It was a little confusing as we weren't sure if you seat yourself? Order first? Sit then order? What's the deal here? Well it lasted until the server was completed with his monologue, then he looked at us with his dead expression and said "hi folks have you been here before?" Now, given we walked in and looked like deer in the headlights and walked in and out of the sitting area once, twice and still look confused, I feel as if this was a silly question. So, you order first then sit. I ordered chicken brisket and my boyfriend ordered tri-tip. I also had a salad. When they brought out the salad (with ranch) it was pretty much just salad. Ranch was no where to be found. Wait! What is that watery white stuff. Oh. There it is. It looked more like the salad had not been washed rather than actual dressing. Sigh. I knew this didn't bode well. Next came the food stuffs. The portions are pretty big however BOTH of our plates came out cold. Not Luke warm, not even a sign of sizzle of the promised fire. YOU CANT HAVE FIRE IN YOUR NAME IF YOUR FOOD IS BARELY LUKE WARM!!!! Not only was it luke warm, but it lacked actual taste. My chicken looked and felt like it had been ground up and made into gelatin patties...It felt like we were chewing on something that resembled meat but the taste was seriously lacking. I looked at my boyfriend and I think I saw a small tear in his eye knowing we spent hard earned money on meat pudding. Sigh. The one saving factor was that he had ordered a brownie that actually wasn't too bad. Had a wonderful time at Stonefire Grill. The ambiance was nice, the servers were great. Above all, the food was perfection. The tri tip -- both the regular and the garlic were amazingly cooked and very tasty. What was perhaps the make surprising was the pizza. The crust is the perfect thickness and the sauce is the right amount. I plan on going back just to order the pizza soon! They also have a great dessert menu. Everything is handmade, including the crust for the cheesecake. My favorite was the Sandy's cookie, which comes from a family recipe. The brownie was great, too. Protein can be added to the Salads. I Love Stonefire Grill. It's definitely what Ventura was missing. The Pepper Garlic Tri-Tip is amazing with it's gorgonzola butter that cascades throughout sliced meat. They also have the most delicious Garlic mashed potatoes. I enjoy mine with a side of bacon and gorgonzola butter. The breadsticks are addicting...So good. Make sure to order extra. The Lemon Garlic Chicken is so juicy and absolutely incredible. Finally all that i just mentioned above is only 15.90 plus taxes. Such an amazing deal. In reality, I would rate this place 2.75 stars if I could. There's potential here, but overall it's underwhelming in atmosphere and attention to detail. What's great: customer service, price point, quantity of food, selection of local craft beers. The way the tri-tip was cooked was perfection. What's okay: it's cold inside, even by the fireplace. If you run hot, you'll like it. Side dishes: the garlic mash potatoes tasted zero like garlic, and more like the inside of a twice baked potato. Cauliflower salad was okay. Needed a tad less dill. Chili beans: the flavor was awesome, but the consistency was very watery. Like bean soup. What's not good: For a restaurant with great beers, and essentially bar and grill type food, this place needs t.v.s. None. We missed some good NFL Sunday game time. Today was my first time trying Stonefire Grill, after my son won a free kid's meal from his school. We had the kid's pizza, BBQ beef sandwich, beef au ju sandwich, and breadsticks with a side of marinara. Our sandwiches had the sides of potato chips and mashed potatoes (hey, we like carbs!). The positives: The meat is seriously amazing, and cooked perfectly with a fantastic flavor. The potato chips are sooooo yummy and well spiced. Breadsticks were great too, and my son's pepperoni pizza was a damn fine pie. The lady at the door who gave us our menus and explained how it works was really sweet and helpful. The servers were also friendly. Prices of the sandwiches were reasonable. The negatives: They served our sandwiches first. We had to wait quite a bit for the pizza, so our food was cold when we could finally all eat. We had to ask twice about the pizza. We had to ask a few times for our breadsticks. The breadsticks were finally brought but they forgot the marinara. It took asking three separate servers to finally get it. Then the marinara was freezing cold. Overall the service felt chaotic, and I don't want to have to ask for items repeatedly. Yes, we went during a busy time. But I still shouldn't have to keep asking different servers for missing food. Bottom line: the meat is worth going for, but I'll get it to go from now on. read more

Went to stone fire tonight, it was a very busy night. They did take our order and get us a table pretty quickly given how busy it was. The front of house staff were all very friendly and pleasant 5 out of 5 for FOH. The low rating is because I ordered a Cesar salad with salmon, something I order frequently from the Thousand Oaks location, and received a minuscule piece of salmon. About half of what it usually is. I asked the waitress immediately when she set it down, and she advised that is how it comes. I would have preferred she bring it back to the cooks upon me questioning it, but she is young and probably new to restaurant work, so it's an opportunity for her to learn. We had not received the side dish we ordered yet, so I decided to wait for her to come back with the side before asking for the manager RE the salmon. 20 minutes passed and she still hadn't come back, meanwhile my dining partner all but finished their meal while I let mine sit so I could show the manager what I was going to complain about. I stood up and asked a waitress to send the manager to my table please. She very pleasantly and promptly got the manager, who came over to the table, agreed with my complaint about the tiny salmon, advised that he would get another piece of salmon going for us and bring us our remaining side. Awesome, fantastic, wonderful. Our other side comes out in 3 minutes and the waitress offers us a slice of cake for our trouble, which also promptly comes out. What never comes out is the salmon, which was $5 worth of the $11.29 I paid for the salad. We were there another 30 minutes and it never came. I will come back here because everyone was so nice, but for this visit 2 out of 5 for $2.50 per ounce salmon. read more

I was immediately hooked on one of their salads, which was sadly was removed from the menu the next time I dined at this restaurant. I was happy to hear that they were opening a restaurant in Ventura, California that is closer to home. Perhaps I have just been unlucky, but every order that I have made at the Ventura location has had errors, such as a missing ingredient or getting dried-out quinoa. Checked out the newly opened Stonefire Grill on their first fully open Friday night. It was a line out the door! It's really more of a fast casual concept than I had thought. Like Sharky's. Stand in line, order and pay at the register, and your food is brought to you. Self serve drinks and grab your own utensils, plates and napkins. Excellent service from all of the employees, who seemed friendly and dedicated to customer service. I really appreciate that. In an effort to be a little thrifty, we decided on a family meal instead of individual meals. You choose a meat, one of four salads and it comes with breadsticks. Tri tip for four was 43.99. (An individual tri tip meal was 15.79.) We added on two medium sides for an additional 10.29 cuz just the salad and breadsticks seemed a little lacking. One glass of cheap red wine, two fountain drinks and one half slice of cheesecake and I'm into it for $80 after I leave a little extra for the tip jar. I don't know, ordering at the register and having it work out to $20 each just surprised me. I guess for twenty bucks I'd like to sit down with a menu and have more of a service scenario. The space is nice, but it was packed, loud and echoing. From one end of the table was impossible to hear the other end of the table. On to the food: tri tip was thinly sliced, tender, and it was a whole tri tip, more than needed for four people so some value there. Not a ton of flavor but acceptable. But the BBQ sauce was a huge disappointment. Funkier than cheap sauce from the grocery store. It hurt the meat. The cartwheel salad was **massive.** A nice mix of ingredients, but already dressed, so when we could only eat half of it, it was sad because it would be useless as a leftover. Maybe get salad with the dressing on the side? Garlic mashed potatoes were nice, skins on. Beans were okay. You saw a little tri tip in them, some herbs, a bay leaf... Breadsticks were forgettable, not worth eating. The cheesecake was actually pretty good. Would I go here again? Maybe? I would probably get a tri tip sandwich (no bbq sauce) or one of their salads. They have the biggest menu of salads I've ever seen! Fifteen different salads, plus an option to design your own. It's a successful small chain, and I suppose they will do well enough in Ventura. I don't see a big enough difference in price to justify the lower quality Stonefire over full service, better quality bbq restaurants like Wood Ranch or Bandits. read more

Consistently good food and service. We love this place. The prices are reasonable for the high quality they provide. However, if you don't pay attention and you have a large group it can get expensive. There are plenty of options for families that help keep the cost down. Just ask. Not everything is on the menus. Our favorite is the tri-tip. It is always perfectly cooked just how we ask. They have barbecue and pepper-garlic. I prefer the pepper garlic. They also have a huge selection of salads. Loved this restaurant in Thousand Oaks so I was excited to see one open here in Ventura. We visited for the first time this evening and we were not disappointed! My mom and I both love their signature BBQ chopped salad so we decided to split a medium. A medium was waaay too much. I think we only ate half, but it was so so good!! My sister ordered the meal that came with tri tip, a chicken breast, and a side of mashed potatoes. She devoured the meat and got full halfway through the potatoes. I tried a bite and they were awesome. My husband ordered the tri tip pizza and he said it was fantastic. It was crazy busy but I thought the employees did an excellent job of trying to make sure people in line had a seat once they ordered their meal. Very comfortable atmosphere. I ordered the Roasted Cauliflower Pita, Roasted cauliflower, Lemon Tahini, chopped tomato, green onion, Spicy Cilantro-Serrano sauce, Jerusalem pita. It was perfectly roasted, tangy with a little spice. Felt like I cheat day because I ate so good! Tried this place for the first time and it wasn't what I'd imagine. Ordered the 1/4 chicken and tri-tip with mash potatoes. It was okay but not amazing. BBQ sauce is a little runny and lightly flavored. Also ordered the kids pizza and it was alright since the kids didn't finish.
