Family of 2 ate for $146 before tip including appetizer and no alcohol. The calamari. Appetizer was wonderful, crispy and flavorful and the marinara was just right. The famous stone puppies were wonderful. The steak was perfect temp and well seasoned. To us, this chain does the best job for excellent steaks out of all the majors, Ruth's Crisp, Angus Barn ect. Stoney River has awesome steaks. The serivce was excellent. The food is well presented and came out on perfect time. The Wedge was really good - they did a nice job of adding a balsamic vinegar to the blue cheese and bacon conglomeration and the end result was excellence in taste. We left stuffed. Ate here for the first time last night in Chapel Hill. I was very disappointed with the service. Ordered a prime rib and specifically asked the waiter for a piece that had a larger cap area. He suggested the end piece which typically has a larger cap region. When the plate came out the piece of meat looked like a strip (maybe 1/4" of cap and that is being generous) rather than the ribeye cut typical of prime rib roasts. I asked for it to be taken back for a piece with some cap on it. They literally brought back the same piece and said there is nothing else with more cap. I wish I had taken a picture of it. The wait staff could have cared less. Rather than escalate to the manager we just continued on with the meal. In my 30 years of dining out and paying for meals on my own dime, I have never left less than a 20% gratuity but last night I did. This poor service probably explains why we got a reservation here but couldn't get a reservation at other restaurants in the area because they were fully booked. Will never eat here again. Drive to Raleigh where there are plenty of true steakhouses. read more

Stoney River has a great relaxing ambience. I have dined here several times and have always had a great experience. Reservations are recommended and easy. However, even without reservations I have never had to wait. I attached several photos from my many visits here. The appetizers are wonderful and sharable if you are in a group. The hot chicken biscuits were my favorite. There are complimentary poppyseed rolls and butter that have a light and sweet taste to them. The steak frites and chicken sandwich have been my favorite entrees. I've tried all of the sides and none of them disappoint. The desserts that I've tried have been incredible as well. 11/10 highly recommend. read more

This was my first time dining at Stoney River. My friend held her 27th birthday dinner here and it was a nice experience. Our server was very knowledgeable and attentive. Our party of 12 was taken care of in a timely manner and our server had an incredibly positive attitude throughout our dinner. The complimentary rolls are soft, warm and very sweet. They reminded me of fresh donuts or fried dough (one of my favorite childhood treats at the carnival) The rolls have poppyseeds in them and the butter is whipped and sweet. The Wedge is pretty typical and very tasty. The blue cheese crumbles were yummy, as well! The salmon was delicious. I requested mine be prepared medium rare and I highly recommend this temp! The asparagus was very flavorful and cooked to my liking. I would not recommend the wild mushrooms. I'm a huge fan of fresh mushrooms, of all varieties, but these tasted canned. If you enjoy canned vegetables, then you probably would love them. It's possible they aren't canned, but I did not enjoy what I tasted. I did not get to try the key lime pie because I was stuffed after dinner. I will definitely revisit this restaurant in the next few weeks to have a slice of key lime pie, as well as, carrot cake. read more

My friend brought me here to celebrate my birthday. I had never been here before so I was excited to try it. The restaurant was spacious and had outdoor and indoor seating. We mentioned that it was really cold inside so we tried to eat outside but there wasn't a table available. So we were told that they would adjust the temperature for us. And they did just that. Soon after it got warmer where we were sitting. Our waiter was really nice and asked us if we had any questions about the menu. He also brought us complimentary rolls after I asked about them. The rolls were served with a flavorful butter. They were good. I ordered the fried shrimp and opted for garlic mashed potatoes and asparagus for my sides. The food was great. I was given a large portion so I had enough to take home. I was also given a birthday card that was signed by employees of the business. I thought that was so cool! Well, they were open and the hostess welcomed us to the full dining bar. Waiting for a table would take 45 minutes. The bartender was really nice but not very efficient. She forgot my drink and it too long for the other bartender pick up where she left off. The food was good. We had two appetizers and two entrees. Everything was tasty and delivered to us promptly. It was for sure on the pricey side, however, that should be expected in a steakhouse. The bread rolls were so delicious and packed a sweet flavor. We shared the chicken salad (not sure of them name). The size of this is enough for 2-3 people-- if you wanted to share :). The ahi tuna stack tasted fresh and was enough for three people. The french bistro soup was super cheesy and flavorful. Strongly rec getting the steak (duh!). I usually get well done and have gotten hard to chew steak, but this steak was so tender and chewy. The creme brûlée was a nice finish to everything. We just had our first dinner at the Stoney River Steakhouse in Chapel Hill and it was terrific! We started with the steak biscuits - these come 5 to a plate and there were four of us, so that was perfect, and both the steak and the biscuits were scrumptious. Three of us had steak (both filet mignons and rib-eye) and they were all cooked to perfection. The sides of cheese grits and creamed spinach were excellent. The only dish that was not top-notch was the steak salad - the steak seemed to have been cooked beforehand and was a little dried out, and the salad was heavy on the lettuce and light on the other ingredients...but that was the only thing that wasn't just right. We were there for a birthday celebration, and they treated the birthday guy to a complimentary piece of their incredible chocolate cake, and we also had the special dessert of the day - a blondie cooked in a little skillet with ice cream. It's not a good sign when restaurant staff has high turnover, either the job sucks relative to the wage, which shouldn't be the case mid tier steak house, or more insidiously new management can't identify correct talent to hire and most importantly properly train them on the restaurants etiquette. Over the last few years I've been waited on by the same high functioning staff until recently, my past three visits I've had a different bar tender each time. Who have gone from absurdly slow, to forgetful, to completely out to lunch. Not folding a napkin upon arrival, not offering a brunch menu on Sundays, forgetting to offer complementary bread / biscuits, having to be reminded that I will in fact need silverware, never refilling my drink, and wandering away mid service to joke and flirt with the shift manager?! Why is the bar for bartenders so low?? Where did the old staff go?? Why did they jump ship? Who hired the new crop of morons?? Who's asleep at the wheel?? I think we're all willing to forgive a single instance of bumpy service, everyone has a bad day, but three times in a row? Strike you're OUT! Portions have gotten smaller, and prices gone up. My family had a reservation for five people late on a Sunday afternoon. The restaurant was large but inviting and comfortable. Our round booth had plenty of space for all of us to sit and eat with room to spare. Two of us must eat gluten free. The server who took our drink order seemed a bit uneasy about this but gave me a card of things we could not order. The server that took care of us for the rest of the meal was very knowledgeable and I felt comfortable ordering safely. I had the petite filet which was delicious and cooked exactly as I ordered. Several of us had steak but the report from family members were that the cedar plank salmon and friend chicken sandwich were also excellent. Prices were in line with a nicer steakhouse. My wife and I ate at Stoney River Steak House last night. I have to say that our experience was very disappointing. I will start with the good. The dinner rolls were excellent; which is pretty bad when the rolls are the best part of the meal. The cream spinach was above average. It had a good taste and not over powering with a bitter spinach flavor. The garlic whipped and au gratin potatoes were average. But there isn't much that you can do with potatoes. The broccoli was not cooked and hard as a rock; which was not eaten. The tiny piece of salmon was over-cooked and dried out. With the seasonings, the flavor was ok but not something that you will remember. The 10 oz center cut filet mignon that was supposed to be medium-rare, was burnt and over done on the outside, and raw on the inside. They must flash-broil it to save time. About a third of the steak was editable; the rest of it could be thrown away. And the taste was bland. You would expect for $47 that this would be a quality piece of meat; but it wasn't. We did not see our waitress much. After she brought us our food, our waitress disappeared until she returned with the check. I am thinking that maybe she did not want to hear any complaints about the food; or have to deal with returning our meals to the kitchen. The women at the counter by the front door had no personalities or ability to welcome you when we arrived; or ask about out meals when we left. This place was not friendly at all. Like I said at the beginning, Stoney River in Chapel Hill, NC was very disappointing for a supposedly upscale steak house. For $100 I expected better. read more

Well, this is our favorite place in Chapel Hill now! Second time at Stoney River, this time before the Duke game. No matter whom we invite, it pleases everyone! We were lucky enough to be welcomed at the hostess stand - they remembered us! Feels like a very expensive steak restaurant with personal impeccable service. Then we were lucky enough to get Ali as our server. Just such a great experience. Five stars plus one more for good luck. Ali and Zach will keep us coming back !!! Love us some Zach!! One tip: if you start by ordering a bottle of the Cakebread (white) and a bottle of Markham Merlot, literally everyone at your table will be happy, and it will feel like a party :-) Def try the carrot cake and get extra plates to share. Visited here again for our now 22nd wedding anniversary - another bang up job! We made a reservation and we arrived early but were seated right away. We let the hostess know it was our anniversary and boy, the staff was so kind! Our server, Lara, was terrific; not only very attentive but very friendly as well. The service at this restaurant is top notch. We started with the whiskey Shrimp toast and they were delicious, just like last time. I got the wedge salad with ranch and my hubby ordered Caesar salad. Both were generous and delicious. I ordered the queens cut prime rib with burgundy mushrooms (again!) and hubby got the filet medallions with crab cake and creamer spinach. Both of our entrees were fabulous. Just an excellent meal. Lara brought us champagne for our anniversary and a slice of decadent chocolate cake. The manager of the restaurant brought us a card signed by the staff! Again, really thoughtful and just top notch treatment. Our bill was $109 before tip and that included two glasses of wine. What an outstanding restaurant! I've been here twice and I've never been disappointed. The coffee rubbed steak is legitimately one of the best steaks I've ever eaten; cooked to perfection, seasoned perfectly, and wonderfully prepared. I attended a birthday dinner last night at Stoney River and it was impressive! Food-5 Service-4 The food was amazing! I had the jumbo fried shrimp, and they were HUGE! Battered and fried to perfection, the seasoning was great. You could tell the shrimp were very fresh which was awesome. It came with parmesean fries and they were amazing as well. They were nice and crispy and very flavorful, as they were generous with the Parmesan. My hubby got the coffee-cured filet. Sooooo... lets just say I wanted to trade food with him. Mine was great but his was to die for. The steak is cured in coffee, molasses, and brown sugar. On top of that, he got it cooked medium. It was soooooo juicy and tender, AMAZING! I was very impressed with the food. The service was awesome. They were very attentive and put up with a lot of picky people in our party. The food came out quick and everyone was pleased. Tried Stoney River for the first time last night. I had seen many positive reviews, so thought we should give it a try. I was especially looking forward to the Steakburger. Our server was very pleasant and efficient. My cocktail was spot on, so the evening opened well. We were offered bread rolls hot from the oven - but they were sweet! This seemed a very odd way to begin a meal. Two of our party had main course salads, which were large and seemed just fine. The other two ordered Steakburgers, one medium rare and one rare. Both were delivered well-done. We sent them back and they were replaced promptly and to the desired doneness - but they were just okay, not at all what we were hoping for. Our favorite burgers had been at Kitchen before the business was sold, and we have been trying to find a great burger ever since. So far, only Hop's Burger Bar in Greensboro has proven a hit, but we would like to find something closer to home. Anyway, ambiance ok on a night when the restaurant was half full, but it was already noisy. Service was absolutely fine. Food was okay but certainly not anything special. $50 steaks and a $2 atmosphere. This place is LOUD with kitchen noise and too many people. Be prepared to basically scream at your companions. Making the experience more intolerable is the lighting, or lack there of, it was actually hard to read the menu the table was so dimly lit. Our server was friendly, but definitely overwhelmed. We didn't see him for nearly 20 minutes after he first approached the table for drink orders. We had to ask another server to find ours, that took another 10 minutes, and then the tone he took with us was more in line with "what do you want" rather than "how can I help you". We had to request the complimentary "bread" we saw other tables eating. Have to admit, it's quite good. More like a nix of a doughnut and fresh bread, with a nice custom butter. Highly recommend giving it a shot. Out mains arrive nearly an hour after ordering, 1 steak was severely overcooked, 1 steak was cold, and our side dishes didn't come at all. 2 steaks did arrive properly cooked and hot off the grill, and the manager did have the kitchen fix the bad steaks. She was very gracious. My filet was excellently prepared, with a nice char and a luscious garlic herb butter on top. The baked potato side was average at best, nothing I couldn't get at a local fair. When all was said and done, the paltry atmosphere, high price, and easily avoidable mistakes isn't worth a return trip. read more

No.). Ended up just shoving all the plates onto an already crowded table. Felt VERY rushed. Pro: Companions who ordered $20 steak and biscuit appetizer touted as "famous" said meat was good... Con...but biscuits dry/flavorless, didn't eat those. Companion asked for box to take biscuits home to dogs. Pro: Salad was delicious; huge so companion and I split it as an appetizer. Con: Companion found what looked like beard hair in hers. Manager could not be found, never appeared. Waiter finally deducted her half of the salad. Apparently it was ok to charge for my half as it maybe didn't have hair in it. Overall: Meh. There are LOTS of good restaurants in Chapel Hill. The service was AMAZING; however, there was a leak in the ceiling and was dripping on my dress. When I mentioned that to the waiter he acknowledged that he already knew it. Awesome Anniversary meal here last evening. Maggie was our server and she provided excellent service. We dined early to avoid coming storms, but the ambience and attention from the server were perfect. Due to a shellfish/seafood allergy, one member of our party needed to ask detailed questions to assure the safety of the meal. Maggie asked the chef every question and promptly returned with an answer. The meal was excellently prepared. We have not had Prime Rib in a restaurant for many years. This was well cooked and seasoned perfectly; served with Au Jus and horseradish with a choice of a side (all of the choices sounded great and the ones we ordered were great - Asparagus, Au Gratin Potatoes, Baked Potato). The Filet was also cooked perfectly. The rolls that come out initially are a bit sweet for our taste and certainly do not need the extra sweet honey butter with cinnamon (we ordered plain butter with them and they were fine). The wine list was good. Dessert was nice (white chocolate cheesecake with strawberry sauce), but a bit big despite being shared by two people. Overall, a wonderful meal and we definitely return, especially for the Prime Rib. read more
