This place I use to love but the last 2 times I've been very disappointed they gave me the wrong cooked steak and then turned around gave me the same steak not new steak and gave it to me like I was suppose to eat it after they took all the stuff off it really bad for a fine dining restaurant then New yers Eve they ran out of bake potatoes how!! My sister bought me here yesterday for my 57th birthday. The atmosphere was nice and clean. The food and service was mediocre at best. Our salads were wilted/turning brown and croutons were soggy/chewy. I ate part of my salad since I was hungry and hadn't ate all day cause I was waiting for a nice dinner. My sister's fiance requested new salads. We were brought the same disappointing salads. The steaks were a bit dry and not prepared as ordered and the au gratin potatos sucked. Very good option if you want a good steak in a nice comfortable and friendly place. Service is good and location was right next door to the hotel I was staying at. One of the best NY Strip steaks that I have ever had. Menu was simple with some good options - but they were out of several things - including the ahi tuna steak. Good local beer selection and price wise was a good value. Hotel even had a $10 off coupon which was a nice treat. Seems like a good spot for business dinners and family outings alike. We had an excellent dinner here! We were staying at the attached hotel and went over for dinner on a Saturday night. It's a very nice steak house with great prices! They had our drinks and drink orders out quickly, I loved the atmosphere here. It's a fancy steak house but NO Snooty employee's they're fun and funny! #classact They started us off with these amazingly delicious fried pieces of dough that acts as their rolls, it comes out with a whipped cinnamon butter, I love just plain butter so they brought that out too. I'm pretty sure there's crack in those things because I couldn't stop eating them! (they were that good) I got the bone-in ribeye and it was excellent, I had it cooked medium rare plus and it was perfect! Whom ever is cooking back there knows what they'er doing! Everyone's steaks came out perfectly cooked and the seasoning tasted good too! We had lots of sides and they were all great, baked potato, broccoli, mac and cheese, and mushrooms. Stopped in for dinner on a business trip and wow, I was pleasantly surprised! The service was fantastic, the food was amazing, and the atmosphere was a nice balance of informal and refined. I had the medallions with mushrooms and each was cooked to a perfect medium-rare. The mushrooms were really flavorful and rich, and the bread ... it's other-worldly good. Little fried buns that were more like light, savory donuts than a heavy, hearty bread. They perfectly complemented the richness of the steak and mushrooms. We also started with an appetizer of the Steak Rolls, which were good enough to have made a meal of themselves. But seriously, the best part of the experience (aside from the company I was with) was the waitstaff. They were attentive, helpful, friendly, and on top of everything. It's hard to compare Stoney River with its "sister" restaurant J Alexanders, of which I am much more familiar, because the bar was set so high in Overland Park that it is very hard to match. However, that is exactly what this review will be, an honest comparison of the two siblings whose experience should be if nothing else, very comparable, if not equal. So to start, Stoney River does serve fantastic dishes! Allow me to be clear about that upfront. This doesn't mean that some things aren't a bit pricey, but it's mostly worth it when you consider the whole package. That being said, there were some notable differences between St Louis's Stoney River and the J Alexanders of Overland Park. First the service. At Overland Park the service was ALWAYS (over 10+ visits) impeccable. At Stoney River, there was a lot left to be desired. Our waiter (while friendly) seemed a bit unorganized, forgetting my drink, forgetting utensils, didn't stay up to speed on water refills, and even forget to leave a pen with the check when it was time to pay. None of this takes away from the foods quality, it's just the little things like this that add up to a less than perfect experience. Speaking of the food. The Lobster bisque was fantastic! Possibly tied for the best I've ever had although I did feel the need to add a pinch of salt. The steak (STRIP) was cooked perfectly and was a generous cut, the Mac and cheese was great too, but a bit dry if I'm comparing it to Overland Parks absolutely EPIC Parmesan Gruyere Mac and cheese. My date ordered a chicken dish which was equally as good as the steak, but the mashed potatoes that accompanied it had a strange sour/tangyness to them that was hard to really get behind. Kind of a love it or hate it scenario. I didn't mind them, but I can't say the same for my date.Her salad was nothing to write home about but above average none the less. Finally, but actually first in the grand scheme of things were the beignets. They were absolutely fantastic and served with a perfect sweet butter. Can't compliment them or the uniqueness of this fried bread enough. All in all the food was good, well above average, not mind blowing, but somewhere in between. Is it better than a national steakhouse chain, ABSOLUTELY, but is it the best in St. Louis? I'd have to say no. Top 15 maybe but the competition is pretty steep in the upper class areas. In summary I think it's possible to push this establishment to truly top tier if they focused a bit more on training the staff better, livened up the menu with some extra special offerings or surf and turf combo offerings, and maybe revamped the ambience to make it feel a bit more intimate. I know I didn't go too much in depth with that specifically, but when your spending $150-200 for a meal for two it generally comes with a bit better service and a more private dining experience. Once again the food was pretty darn good but the overall experience felt slightly underwhelming. read more

Stopped by this place While in town. I knew they didn't have indoor dining so I got the order to go. The bartender was fantastic when ordering telling me about the menu, beers, and asked if I had any other dietary concerns.I took my beer outside, only issue would be if they had a bench or someplace you could sit while you're waiting for your food rather than waiting inside. I ordered the black and blue steak salad.Which was fantastic. The eggs are not just cut up eggs but deviled eggs, the blue cheese was plentiful And good, andThe steak was delicious. I also appreciated that two different dressings came with the salad. But I must say the best thing about it was that they packaged the steak, salad, and delicious rolls separately. Normally when I get the salad for takeout everything is all together and you never quite get the flavor of the salad or the steak which was perfect. Yesternight, I attempted to make a reservation for a party of 13. I knew the locations I had in mind could possibly not hold my party size. I called Stoney because from the times I have been the service (waiters) were VERY pleasant and professional. So I called them to book my reservation and was advised that I couldn't book because of my party size. I asked the host if we could just make two separate reservations in my frustration from finding a restaurant. She said she needed approval from the manager. She gets back on the phone and said that they could accommodate us but we are not allowed to walk to each other's table. Fine! Let me make sure the group understands this and I'll call back if I can book. I call back IN FIVE MINUTES. A new host answers and I tell her I spoke with a Lex or Lexi (mind you I called so many places so I could've mixed the names). I have her the spill on what transpired minutes ago and she interrupted me saying no no no, we don't take parties that big especially on Saturday's. I didn't get to the part about the split reservation yet and I told her what I was advised of. She said we don't have a Lex here. I asked well is it possible to still accommodate the two separate reservations? She said let me get you to the GM. I'm trying to remember names and I think his name is Miles. He gets on the line and allows me to tell him about my experience the first time. Once I'm done, he then says we can't accommodate you. Confused because the previous host advised me they could and stated she spoke with a manager. I asked him even two separate tables? He replies, "We can't service you and we don't have a Lex/Lexi here. I think you're confusing locations." I advised I wasn't and asked him how many locations are in St. Louis and he says one. So I advised him I wasn't. He said ma'am we can't service your party this Saturday. I said Saturday? What date did she ask you about? He said what day do you need? I again asked what date was he advised for him to reply with what date am I looking for. He knew he messed up then because he was "arguing about in accurate information. I replied with April 10th. He said we still can't book your party. Shocked I asked even with splitting up the tables? He responded with what's your number? I gave it to him and he said what day you need? I advised the 10th again. So he books two separate reservations with an attitude and then says this is your first time with us. Even though it wasn't I didn't let him know. I get off the phone feeling distraught because a GENERAL MANAGER just handled a consumer soooo badly. I decided to find another elegant restaurant willing to take or accommodate my party and cancel them. When I did, I gave them a courtesy call to advise and the first time they picked up the phone and hung up. The second time the GM answered and I said I want to cancel my reservation (he knew it was me because they have called id). He said for what day and I replied April 10th. He goes is this Kimberly. I said yes and hung up because I was so pissed about their treatment. To be a GM and treat customers like that is HORRIBLE. I'll never come back to the chesterfield location. Wonderful! For starters, the bread was yummy little fried bread with cinnamon butter. We split one- wow! Kind of like a donut. The wedge salad is gigantic. It is about a half a head of cold crisp deliciousness with blue cheese, bacon awesome. The waitress was wonderful and helped us properly order our 10 ounce filets. It was the most generous 10 ounces I have ever seen. Could not finish it. I ordered mushrooms for the table- good call. I think they have burgundy in them. The asparagus was as fat as a hot dog!!! I had heard that this place was "just like Bristol's"...no it's not. It's really good, but it's not Bristol's. The ambience is really nice and the staff was very attentive. I ordered Deviled Eggs to start, the coffee rubbed filet with a side of creamed spinach. The service was super quick on the Eggs. Travis, my server, also brought sweet little warm dinner rolls with cinnamon honey butter. Yum! I only ate one trying to save myself for the main event! The eggs were chilled so I imagine they were made prior to service allowing them to come out really fast. There are six to a serving, way too much for me, but I did manage to eat three. Here's the thing, they were good, but they weren't goooood - you know what I mean? The filling didn't have anything special...it did have chopped bacon but because it was a hard chill, the bacon had that flabby texture cold bacon gets. Also, the cracked pepper was a little too big; I was actually chomping down on pepper, which isn't the best. Then the steak and spinach cane. Both were beautiful. The spinach had this beautiful layer of perfectly browned cheese on top and was creamy and delicious. The steak was cooked perfectly and definitely a beautiful piece of meat, but I didn't end up liking the coffee rub. That's a personal taste; it was too sweet and I tend to like steak more on the salty, savory side. All in all a nice meal and Travis was great. read more

We drove to St Louis just for a quick drive. We found this place on our way back to Iowa. It's a steakhouse & Valentines Day and they didn't have a wait. So we took a chance, they had immediate seating (lots of pick up orders were waiting for their meals). The salad was just right for the 2 of us (we shared). My ribeye was so tender, juicy, delicious and cooked perfectly. I can't remember the last time I had one that tasted so good. The asparagus was huge and not tough. (I want to know how they do that). My husband had the stacked cheeseburger. He ordered that WITHOUT cheese. However, it had cheese. He he said he would have appreciated a hamburger steak more than his cheeseburger supposed to be hamburger. He said the fries were just fries. Our waitress was LaToya and she was GREAT! We appreciated her very much. She had her mask on the entire time. They sat us next to the prep area (where the waiters/cooks) were. We froze. It also appeared they did not have a system in place for their to go orders. We saw ONE female trying to find all of the drive-up orders and it's in the single digits outside. (Some others would come to look for an order but not often). At one point in time, she had three tables to scan to find the order of whomever showed up. I would think after 11 months of COVID they would have had a better system by now. The people had to have cold food by the time they got home with their meal. But that is my own bias with taking food to go. It's either cold or soggy. They were sitting people in every other booth. They had people at the bar (plastic protectors up for bartender and customer) and spaced appropriately. Masks were required in the restaurant unless you were seated at your table. All staff wore masks. I did not see any hand sanitizer anywhere. Would recommend or visit again if in the neighborhood. Thank you for a great Valentines Day dinner. read more

Was here for a group event- had never really heard much about this restaurant after having lived in the St Louis area (and Chesterfield too!) for about 6 years and this was fabulous! We were a big group so we were off to the side in a more private room which was awesome. They have great appetizer/sides- broccoli, potatoes au gratin, other greens, side salads. I got a filet mignon as my main and it was delicious- cooked perfectly at medium rare. Prices are reasonable for what you would expect a place like this would be. Had an excellent time at the Stoney river steakhouse the other night. It looks a little chain like from the outside and even a little on inside. However the staff and food set it apart. The bartenders where great. I wish I knew ours name so I could compliment her. Also our waitress as pretty new but attentive and a lot of fun (Lindsey aka princess). I had the filet Oscar style and highly recommend. Also the deviled eggs - that can be hit or miss at restaurants and these were a standout terrific. read more

Let me start by saying, I am a die hard Stoney River lover since it's inception in Alpharetta, Georgia...a very long time ago. I realize that was then and this is now, but once upon a time this restaurant was one of the best when it comes to quality, service and price point. Over the years the small chain changed hands and went from one of the best to one of the worst, and recently when purchased by J. Alexander's...it started climbing back up the quality ladder. My job requires travel across the midwest which includes a Stoney River location here and there. It is always my "go to" for myself or a business dinner or group. I've never had a bad experience with the exception of the Chesterfield, MO location. When this location is on it's game, it is hard to beat but more times than not, they struggle with consistency. And while a miss step is totally understandable, when this place misses a step and management gets involved you wish that you never walked into the place. A few months ago my wife's filet came out cold and when we brought it to the attention of the server, she sent it back. The manager brought back the same piece of meat, sat it front of her, and said "I hope this is OK" and departed quickly. The filet was now a piece of Jack Links beef jerky. When the server came back to check on us, the look on her face was priceless when she asked, "is everything ok?" It was obvious to us that she was just as shocked to see the shriveled up piece of meat sitting on her plate. The irony of this "lets just recook an under cooked piece of beef"and "re nuked" a $42 steak. He simply slid in between us, sat the steak down in front of my wife and walked away. One would think a "manager" would want to know if the steak looked ok, cooked ok or tasted ok, before he/she left...nope, not the case. So tonight, December 7th, 2019 we had family in from Colorado and Tennessee. Everyone was starving and while a lot of jokes were made about ordering pizza, wings, subway and a sundry of other fast food funnies, we suggested Stoney River. The night started out with no res but an empty restaurant when we walked in. The hostess delivered us to a table behind the bar next to the kitchen that was noisy and busy with constant server traffic, so we asked to be moved to another table. At first we were told no other tables available (in their empty restaurant), but then they quickly changed their story and moved us to a more quiet and less busy location. Appetizers were served without incident. Three out of four drink orders were wrong which they corrected. Bottle of $55 wine took a long time to come out, which arrived after the appetizers were served with no explanation for the delay. Entrees were served which we couldn't eat because we had no silverware. Silverware later arrived with no steak knives. We ate the side dishes while we waited for the steak knives, but they were cold. One entree was completely wrong and was sent back....which was later replaced with the exact same wrong entree. Once steak knives arrived, it was discovered that one filet was too salty to eat (same filet that is ordered on every visit, so we know how it should taste)...it was sent back and replaced with another cut (manager's choice....she didn't ask us first) that was cooked medium rare (original was ordered medium). We sent that back and ended up not ordering a replacement. We understand sh*t happens but we also understand that customer service engages when sh*t happens. The problem with this location is the condescending attitude from the managers...which is adopted by the servers...and the rest is downhill. When we spend in the neighborhood of $200.00 every time we go to Stoney River...and IF something goes wrong...DO NOT make me feel like I've done something wrong or "how dare you" suggest we've done something wrong. J. Alexanders...you have work to do at this location and until you get customer delight figured out, we will not be back. And we will do our part to make sure we share our experience so no one else embarrasses themselves, family or business colleagues to your lack of a true quality dining experience. read more

What can I say, this place is top notch and a great place to get a fantastic steak without breaking the bank. I've never eaten at a Morten's Steak House because after looking at their menu I'd have to get a second mortgage loan to pay for the bill. Flemings is also a great steak place and went there for a special occasion and it was a bit pricey but very good. Stoney River is equally as good and much more reasonably priced but not quite the atmosphere of a place like Flemings. I will definitely go back to Stone River, had a filet mignon that was cooked perfectly and just melted in your mouth. One of the best steaks I've had! read more

It tasted great and was cooked exactly how it was ordered. They had one of my top wines which was great - Silver Oak, NAPA and priced decently. The ambience that this restaurant provides is awesome! We had the Kona crusted fillet, and the grilled salmon special, and both were not only delicious but very enjoyable. Each entrée comes with one side, and we both had salads that were also delicious! We celebrated our 36th wedding anniversary there and asked if we could bring our very own special bottle of wine. My wife and I visited for the first time after we heard how good it was. Have to say the inside looked great but the service was so bad I would say, stay away . Our server Jude was more worried about talking to the kitchen staff and bar people than taking care of the 2 tabels that were in his section. We sat down and he was on us to order drinks quick and we did. The server never told us of any specials, so we ordered our food then when he was talking to the table right accross from us he told them of specials. Then when our steaks arrived nobody gave us a knife to cut them. We sat there for aobut 5-10 min and the manager was running by so I asked him for some. He noticed my wifes martini was about empty so he asked if she wanted another and yes she did. But 20 min later our server broght it to her in a bourbon glass that was not even half full and said they were out of the normal martini glass and that was the best they could do. TERRIBLE. My drink was empty and he never even asked if I wanted one NOR did he( Jude) ever ask how our food was. Wish was not the greatest. I had the pleasure of taking my sister here while she was visiting. If I could give Stoney River more stars I would. It's rare that you find top notch service along with excellent food. From the moment we entered up until our departure we received wonderful service. We had a few cocktails to start off. I enjoyed a couple of dirty martinis. We then deceived on the deviled eggs. The bacon was a bit salty for out tase so we ended up scraping it off. My salmon was cooked to perfection and the sides that were offered with this dish paired perfectly. Our waiter knew just when to check in on us and also brought us out a complimentary piece of chocolate cake which was Devine! If you are looking for the perfect place to go for dinner then you have found it with Stoney River. Now just remember this is a fine dining restaurant so don't expect a cheap bill but you will not regret spending a single dime here. read more
