I can't speak as to what kind of hairdresser Tracy is because I never got far enough to have my hair done by her. Looks like that's actually a good thing after reading all these other reviews. I bought a Groupon to get a deep conditioning treatment, haircut, blow dry and style over a month ago. The only way to book is through text. She takes at least 48 hours to respond, if she responds at all. After going back and forth for weeks she tried to tell me her Saturdays were completely book through the end of the year and could only offer me a 10:00am slot on a Wednesday. Non-responsive and rude as hell. If you're so damn busy why in the world are you running promos on Groupon, lady?! You obviously don't need any new clientele. read more

So I had purchased a Groupon for this place five years ago and remember loving my hair. I went ahead and purchased another- what a difference experience. This was for Tracy's partial highlights (same thing I purchased last time ) which sells for $45. I didn't want just bright highlights like last time, I wanted to add color too. I didn't imagine it would be more than 60-70 dollars on top of what was already paid for the Groupon. I arrived and she was waiting, this time she used a cap instead of foil, which struck me as odd but she's the professional, so I went with it. My hair was taking longer to lighten, she applied more bleach. Then finally we moved on to the color- the color was applied on the same cap mind you. Again weird, but what do I know. Color actually came out vibrant, however the highlights are far from the roots and the red isn't covering all the areas that were lightened. When I asked how much I owed it was a whopping 130! I thought surely including the Groupon amount, but this was not the case. It was $175 basically for adding red to the highlights I allegedly already paid for? She said it was because she had to apply another bit of bleach... we achieved the same light yellow the previous time with no additional charges and if you look at previous photos, it starts from the root (it was done with foil so it looks way better). Not sure what the benefit of having highlights done with a cap at a salon are over doing it at home especially considering how badly it turned out? read more

I was a little hesitant going to studio 69 due to the mixed reviews of how good and bad it was. After another heat wave in San Diego, I decided to give this place a try for a quick trim and undercut to lighten the weight of my mane. I figured if they messed up - my hair can always grow back. At first, I was put off by the amount of people loitering around the area but there was a security guard in the premises and the door was locked unless you text your stylist to be let in. Fortunately, I had a great experience at Studio 69. Tracy & her team was very pleasant to be around with. They even gave me a FREE mask when my current one prevents me from getting a decent haircut. And I absolutely loved that Tracy gave me a haircut that I know I wanted but didn't know I needed. It was a great haircut at a great price. I highly recommend Tracy if you are close to SDSU or downtown La Mesa. I would definitely give this place a try :) read more

Horrible experience- Went to Tracy for a partial highlight, cut and style- she started off by used a cap!! pulled over my ears- tight. The for an hour she plucked portions of my hair through the cap- digging into my scalp each time. I'm not sure why she used a cap as it is a lazy way to color, and doesn't allow a weaving of color at all. She over processed the hair and by that time I wanted to leave. The whole experience was painful and this is suppose to be relaxing and enjoyable. Save your money. read more

I am an African-American with curly, thick, natural hair. Never have I found anyone who could style my hair as well as Alexis did. I used to go here years ago when I attended SDSU (she's now relocated to Mission Valley). She was so good that I referred my mom who had very fine, permed hair and she loved her too. I had been getting acrylics for years and hated the way my nails got so weak and brittle. Decided to do those cheap gel manicures making my hands look like my dad's hands. UGH My daughter got me a gift certificate to see Maria. OH MAH GAWD--I'm sorry but Maria is NOT a manicurist. She is an ARTIST!!! I'm pretty conservative when it comes to my nails. Studio 69 is home to THE BEST MANICURIST in California! When we moved to San Diego several years ago I spent almost 3 years looking for someone who didn't cut my cuticles and cause infections. Maria is not only a MASTER manicurist, she is also an artist in her own right. My nails were always beautiful, creative and exciting! I got an offer from Groupon and I bought it, the communication from Tracy was very unprofessional, I messaged her on facebook at first about scheduling an appointment, no response whatsoever. So I called the number provided by Groupon to schedule an appointment and she right away said I have to call you back i'm driving, which is understandable but then she never called back. I then waited a few hours then texted the number and she finally texted back saying I don't have any availability for the next two weeks... I got a quote from the receptionist of $45 for a haircut and $75 for a color with Jesse (Owner). After he cut and colored my hair he charged me $80 for a haircut and $100 for a color. The coloring was very patchy as he didn't leave it on long enough and he did admit that he didn't know how to color well afterwards. And the cut was nothing like I wanted and was to short, after I stated what I wanted and gave him a picture of the style. Won't be going back there again very dishonest. When I spoke with Jesse (owner) He acted as if nobody there gave me prices and shrugged me off as if I were lying. Didn't bother to try and work it out or give me a cut in price since he didn't color my hair properly. Never been more disappointed in a stylist that is supposed to be experienced in regards to styling hair or disrespect of a new client. My advice, don't go there. It's not safe there due to the derelicts that are hanging around the area and one actually pounded on the door to try to get into the salon per Jesse and he had to get his gun from the back to show the derelict and the guy finally left. I have been working as a cosmetologist since 1995 and I have to say that of all the salons I had worked at during my 24 years in the beauty industry, Studio 69 Salon & Spa is by far the most organize, drama-free and it is where I got the utmost supportive from the owners. Their dedications to their salon's associates are bar-none. Even if you are new in this business you will never feel that you are alone it in. While I was working at this salon from 1997 to 2000 I never once made to feel that I am alone. No one at this salon ever made me feel the competition and cattiness among stylists that often exist in most high-end salon. I love working here at the Studio 69 Salon & Spa so much that I chose and so happy to be back working as a Medical Esthetician after years of being way (moving away due to schooling, marriage, and raising my children). I bought a Groupon for a Brazilian Blowout from Tracy. Never again... I was highly disappointed. Its only been two weeks and my hair did not show any difference in texture, shine, etc. The blow drying and straightening time is still the same despite being told it would take half the time to style my hair now. I'm not sure if being a Groupon client has anything to do with the service done on my hair, or if it was simply just rushed. I've had bad experiences in the past with Groupons so its hard to say it wasn't the fact that I was a Groupon client. The process took about 2 hours...super short if you ask me considering I've had a Brazilian Blowout done in the past and it was a 3-4 hour process. I only saw her put product in my hair once, I think there's more steps to the BB, can't be too sure, just going off what I researched. Mind you I paid $89-99 for the Groupon itself and had to pay an additional $25 there due to the thickness of my hair. Its fine I accepted, but I would expect my hair to look as flawless as it did before. My hair is so so dull, looks like I went bleach blonde and damaged it. I honestly have no clue what happened. To be fair, I did text Tracy and she offered to put a mask in my hair. Unfortunately, her schedule never works with mine. I am only available mornings due to work but she did not seem willing to accommodate as she only works afternoons. I'm just really disappointed because Tracy seemed like a great person who knew what she was doing. The curl in my hair tho has not relaxed one bit. Nope. Nope. Nope. Literally the worst salon experience I have ever had. I am sorry if there are other good stylists here, but the stylist who helped me literally gave me the most uncomfortable experience and WORST haircut of my life. Let's just start with my first mistake: I bought a groupon to get my hair done here with William. NEVER again will I make that mistake. My second mistake: not leaving as soon as I met my stylist. He basically made fun of the highlights that I had and asked me if I "stopped smoking crack" because they were that bad. What a great first impression. Then he left to the back, did not tell me where he was going, and came out with some dye for my hair. I had told him I wanted brown, but he never showed me what he was putting in my hair or even asked me what I wanted. While putting the color on he proceeded to tell me about how he was taking some online class about talking to women. At this point I was visibly uncomfortable, but that didn't stop him from talking about it. Then as he was leaving to let my color sit, in which he completely disappeared and told me nothing about how long it was going to take, he made fun of the shoes I was wearing! He told me I was "better than that". Okay so he's made fun of my hair and my shoes, what's next? After he started washing my hair and telling me about some woman he met at a bar and how she was flirting with him and she was wearing leopard tights and talked like an "intellectual"? I am only sharing this to demonstrate the things he was saying to me throughout my experience. When we went back to the chair is when the real horror began. When I walked in my hair was one length which I wanted to keep, but add bangs as well. MY BIGGEST MISTAKE. I should have just dyed my hair and left. He began chopping away at my hair giving me the shortest layers. I will forver regret asking this "stylist" to give me bangs. I showed him a picture of long fringe bangs, which he must NOT have looked at because I now look like a complete idiot with bangs at the middle of my forehead. Basically I left the salon with a dated Rachel haircut and Dumb and Dumber bangs. When I gave hime his tip for this horrible experience he said "it's supposed to be more". MORE FOR MAKING ME UNCOMFORTABLE AND CHOPPING AT MY HAIR FOR TWO HOURS?! OH and at some point during the ordeal he started massaging me out of nowhere without even asking me!! I have never had such an uncomfortable experience getting my haircut. This is a warning about this stylist so you don't have to go through what I did. read more

Never ask for Tracy. She is so unprofessional and just try to rip you off. She can't even blow dry and style a frizzy curly hair. She can't even do a touch up without asking you what's the number of hair color? Who does that? A professional ?!! I told her what hair color I've been using for 2 years! I went to Jess (the owner who works tirelessly every day it's open and loves what he does) all through middle school and high school for cut and color, then I moved away for 7 years. :-( I'm 25 now and just moved back to San Diego a couple of months ago; went back and still amazing! Wouldn't dream of going anywhere else for my hair, completely trust him for quality cut and style. This place really cares about quality and I don't know of any other salon with so many loyal, long-term customers. There's definitely good reason for that! I have not had anyone else cut my hair personally here, but have watched others and all of the stylists are very talented. Everyone is friendly, helpful, and professional. It's got a great atmosphere and I've never seen anyone who looks remotely dissatisfied with their hair.
