This was my first visit to this long standing old school diner in downtown Des Plaines. It's been on my to-try list forever but it took a venue change for my neighborhood men's club lunch group to get me here. I enjoyed my lunch and the value is good here. Parking is also easy, either right out front on Miner Street or in their adjacent parking lot. They have an extensive brunch menu. I had their gyros omelette, which comes with hash browns and pancakes. It was $15.95 and everything was generously sized. It was good except for the hash browns which had a powdery taste and were very bland. One lunch mate had a huge cheeseburger with fries for $13.95. Another had French toast with a side of bacon for $14.49. Yet another had two eggs with pancakes and sausage links also for $14.49. All items were generously sized. It wasn't crowded and the noise level was ok for conversation despite some contemporary pop music from the speakers. Naturally the restaurant has dated decor but is clean. Our server was Vickie and she was attentive and friendly and readily prepared individual bills for each of our party of 6. I didn't see a sign or notice but fyi they do charge a 3% credit card fee. Overall, a solid 4 stars, and a thumbs up for our lunch outing at this historic restaurant.

A Des Plaines institution...old school diner with a large menu, large portions, and damn good coffee. Great staff. But, I noticed the other day, when I stopped in, the quality of the food has dropped a bit. Maybe I caught the kitchen on a bad day? My eggs were flavorless, tasted stale. The ham off the bone was a bit drier than what I was used to previously. Potatoes came lukewarm, flavorless... not even salt and pepper could rescue them. Prices are still reasonable, portion sizes are large. But they have to up the game in the kitchen a bit. I've had better experiences there in the past.

Let's start with the staff who know me by name and always make me feel good when I stop by. Then the food is always tasty, in good portions and always hot. It's a very homey feeling place without extra bells and whistles but they aren't

Awesome experience here. Every staff member was sweet and willing to help! They converse with you, ask to help, and are quick to take your order. I highly recommend this establishment! First time I've ever tried poached eggs and it was runny yoke goodness. I would definitely return here!

My experience was truly a 3-1/2 star review, and only on the basis that the service could have been a bit more attentive. Very friendly and approachable staff, however, I did have to get up a few times to ask for items that were needed. Food was delicious, though more of a breakfast spot if that's what you are looking for; I had the grilled chicken delight, seasoned perfectly. Portions were very generous, so you certainly have value in what you are ordering, and the lentil soup was absolutely fantastic. You can tell that it's an establishment that people return to frequently, the retro old school sign is a classic, traditional diner fair with a relaxing vibe.

My friend picked this spot for lunch and it was nice. Great friendly staff. Lots of food choices. I liked my nutella crepes but I just wish they were stuffed with nutella like in Vegas's crepe spot, the nutella was just drizzled on. Still good though. Love the vintage feel to the place. Everything was yummy!

The couple times I've been here I've had the bacon omelette and it's great. This time I added jalapeños and it a nice bit of added heat. They asked if I wanted their seasonal pumpkin pancake and I decided to be festive; unfortunately, it was actually a pancake walnut pancake with the walnuts baked in as opposed to just a garnish, so I didn't eat them. I'll definitely continue to go here for breakfast, and almost certainly do the takeout. The interior of the restaurant is pretty small, maybe a couple dozen tables at most.

After waiting more than 1.5 hours, I called to check the status and found out that my order had not even been prepared. I don't know who I spoke with on the phone, but instead of helping resolve the issue, I was told that I could simply cancel my order. What frustrated me most was the explanation I received: "Sorry, this app doesn't work well." The representative showed little interest in solving the problem. Apparently, the app worked perfectly when it charged my credit card, but when it came to processing and delivering my order, suddenly the app was the issue. Delays can happen, but customers should be informed instead of being left waiting with no updates. I still didn't receive my order after two hours. The customer service was awful, and the lack of communication made the situation even more frustrating. This used to be one of my favorite places, but unfortunately, the quality of service seems to be getting worse.

We made a reservation because I'd heard this place can get pretty busy. Although it didn't seem too crowded when we first arrived on a Saturday, it filled up quickly throughout our meal. I definitely recommend making a reservation, especially if you're planning to come for dinner. As soon as we walked in, I was struck by how beautiful the restaurant is. Since the building was once a church, they preserved the stained-glass windows and cathedral ceilings, which give the space so much character. We ended up sitting on the patio because it was a gorgeous day, but I definitely want to come back and dine inside so I can fully appreciate the interior. The patio was modern, spacious, and completely shaded, making it very comfortable. Since it's located right next to the little lake, we also enjoyed a nice breeze throughout our meal. Our waitress was friendly and attentive overall, but there was one moment that stood out. My friend's baby accidentally knocked over a full glass of iced coffee, spilling it all over my friend's lap and onto the floor. The waitress watched as my friend cleaned up the mess herself but didn't offer to help or replace the spilled drink. Aside from that, the service was good. My friends and I all ordered something different, and everyone enjoyed their meals. I had the salmon poke bowl ($19), which was fresh, flavorful, and incredibly refreshing. The ingredients tasted high quality, and all the flavors worked really well together. It was more filling than I was expecting! Price-wise, I expected the menu to be more expensive than it actually was. I'm sure dinner prices are higher, especially for steak and seafood, but the brunch menu was quite reasonable. Most breakfast and brunch dishes range from $12-$20, making it a great value for both the quality of the food and the beautiful atmosphere. Overall, we all enjoyed our experience and I'll for sure be back! I'd love to try other menu items and come for dinner, too!

My husband and I chose Foxtail on the Lake for our five-year wedding anniversary because we wanted…read morewhat we hoped would be one of the most memorable and romantic dining experiences in the area. We intentionally made this our "no budget" celebration, expecting exceptional food, service, and hospitality. Instead, it turned into one of the most disappointing restaurant experiences we've ever had. Our reservation was for 7:00 p.m. on July 2, and despite having a reservation, we waited more than 20 minutes to be seated. During that time, we watched people walk in, greet someone they appeared to know, and be seated immediately at the bar while we continued to wait. My husband had gone out of his way to ensure our anniversary would be acknowledged. He noted on the reservation that it was our five-year anniversary, called ahead before our dinner to confirm the restaurant was aware, and even checked with the host stand when we arrived. We weren't asking for anything extravagant--just the kind of small acknowledgment that many restaurants happily provide for guests celebrating a milestone. Nothing happened. There was no congratulations, no acknowledgment from our server, no candle with dessert, no handwritten note, nothing. We even ordered dessert ourselves, and it arrived exactly as if it were any ordinary Tuesday night. The service only added to the disappointment. Our server was curt, rarely checked on us despite our ordering two appetizers, two entrées, dessert, and several rounds of drinks, and never made us feel welcomed or cared for. For a restaurant positioning itself as a destination for special occasions, the level of hospitality simply wasn't there. Unfortunately, the food didn't make up for it. Considering the price point, we expected much more. Most dishes were surprisingly bland and underseasoned, and nothing we ordered stood out as memorable. At the end of the evening, my husband politely mentioned everything to the host stand. The response was essentially that our anniversary "must have gotten lost in communication," followed by an offer of a dessert to take home. By that point, the moment had already passed. A boxed dessert cannot replace a once-in-a-lifetime celebration that was overlooked from start to finish. No manager came over to speak with us, no one took ownership of the experience, and there was no meaningful attempt to make things right. This wasn't just dinner--it was our fifth wedding anniversary, a milestone we'll never get to celebrate again. We chose Foxtail because we trusted it would deliver an exceptional experience worthy of the occasion. Instead, we left feeling ignored, disappointed, and wondering why we spent so much money on an evening that felt like an afterthought. If you're looking for a restaurant to celebrate an anniversary, proposal, birthday, or other meaningful milestone, I cannot recommend Foxtail on the Lake based on our experience. There are too many restaurants that understand hospitality and know how to make guests feel special. Sadly, this wasn't one of them.

The diner has a classic, retro feel with a checkerboard aesthetic that gives it a traditional diner vibe. It is not very modern or trendy, but it is clean and well-kept, which is really what matters. The space feels simple and comfortable, making it a place someone can visit regularly for a quick, reliable meal. The menu is very straightforward and features typical diner staples. The food was pretty good, but the dishes were very basic with nothing particularly unique about them. It felt like the kind of food you might make at home, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but it wasn't especially memorable either. I ordered an egg sandwich with cheese and sausage ($9.95). I also ordered bacon on the side (3 for $4.25). The egg sandwich was okay, but the bagel tasted like those cheap bagels you would get at a hotel during their complimentary breakfast that come from a bag. The sandwich didn't have anything on it other than exactly what they called it on the menu: a bagel, sausage links cut in half, an egg, and cheese. Nothing on the sandwich was seasoned or flavorful. My husband enjoyed his food much more than I did, and he ordered the Big Texas Breakfast ($12.95). This came with country-fried steak with sausage gravy on top, 2 eggs your way, and hash brown potatoes. He also ordered sausage links on the side (3 for $4.25). The service was friendly, and everything came out in a reasonable amount of time, which worked well for us since we were on a bit of a tight schedule. Overall, Lola's Diner delivered a simple diner experience with homemade-style food. I would come here again, but it wouldn't be my first choice for breakfast.
