Free Trust Me on your birthday! You have to dine-in twice prior to your birthday and make sure to write down your information on their check-in papers that usually come with your bill. There's a few parking lots that are surrounding the place but they all require payment. I came here on a Wednesday night at 8 p.m. and there wasn't a wait fortunately! We were seated instantly next to two tables and I will say, it's an uncomfortable few seconds (for both parties) squeezing in between to sit down since the tables are so close together. I will say that the restaurant has a dark/intimate ambiance since it's lit by the candles at your table. My table ordered 2 trust me's and 1 nozawa trust me. You're served with a plate of edamame and then each fish one by one. They wait for the entire table to finish eating the plate in front of you before going back to the kitchen to let them know when to prepare to following dish. The fish literally feels like it melts in your mouth. You get a chance to chew but then everything else melts in your mouth. The sushi rice they use is magnificent. When the sushi comes out, the rice is so warm and the fish on top is cold and it's honestly an amazing experience in your mouth.

Bottom right is lobster nigiri. Part of the don't think just eat menu

Came here for lunch on a Saturday. There was a line before opening so I would recommend coming early, especially if you are coming with a group. The meal was a fun experience! It was clear that the chef put a lot of thought into each bite. The ones that stood out the most to my group were the salmon sushi with toasted sesame (the nuttiness of the toasted sesame was incredible), unagi (the eel sauce was the best that I've ever had and I've been to Japan!), and the lobster hand roll. I would recommend parking The Commons so that you can get validation at Sugarfish.

My party of 4 walked in and were seated right away on a Thursday evening. We all did the Trust Me set. I was able to sub out the crab hand roll for a salmon hand roll. My favorites in the set were the tuna and chutoro sashimi, salmon sushi, and toro hand roll. One thing was that the rice was pretty hot which warmed up the sashimi. I've had Sugarfish in the past and the rice was never this hot before. I definitely prefer a more room temperature rice that keeps the sashimi cooler. Overall fun experience though and service was great. Would come back!

Sugarfish has been an LA institution since they burst onto the scene a decade ago. This Pasadena location just happened to be nearby and we decided to pop in for a late lunch after visiting the Norton Simon Museum. We parked on a side street but they have parking at the Commons structure and validate too. We walked in and asked for seating for 2 and were shown to the bar. No problem with us. We ordered the Trust Me and Trust Me Lite options, plus one order of unagi nigiri. I also ordered the sustainable sparkling water, which happened to be soda water from their soda dispenser. We were handed plates of edamame which was served cold. My husband is not a fan of soybeans so more for me. Our first plate of tuna and chutoro shashimi was the perfect start to our meal. Then came out the nigiri in rapid succession: tuna, yellowtail, salmon, sea bream, etc. The toro handroll was tasty. His blue crab handroll came out around the same time as my unagi, which was perfect. We loved that the rice was warm and that the fish was thickly sliced. The fish was so fresh! We enjoyed it immensely. Lunch was on my boss since I received a On Me gift card from the company and Sugarfish just happens to be one of the locations listed as a restaurant that accepts it. We had a lovely lunch and went in search of dessert. This location of Sugarfish is located in the Commons near Williams Sonoma in Pasadena.

The Nozawa Trust Me, easily really filling for those that usually eat a lot. Edamame: very standard, lightly cold, lightly salted. Tuna and Chutoro Sashimi: soft paired with soysauce Albacore Sushi, ponzu with chives: My favorite between the three options. Soft and buttery. Salmon Sushi: Fresh and soft. New Zealand Sea Bream Sushi, citrus salt: Little tough and texture is like shrimp. Toro Hand Roll: Warm, seaweed fresh but not crispy. Bluefin Otoro Sushi: Buttery and so so soft. Japanese Yellowtail Sushi, lemon: buttery as well and refreshing tang with lemon. Hirame Sushi, yuzu ponzu: was a bit drenched with ponzu so it was slightly salty and sour than usual. Blue and Dungeness crab hand roll: texture is more like canned tuna.

I had Sugarfish delivered and it was delicious. While I prefer dining in to enjoy the warm rice and fresh nori hand rolls, their delivery has been consistently solid and always hits the spot. I ordered the albacore sushi with green onions and ponzu sauce, a few orders of the fresh salmon sushi with toasted sesame, and a lobster cut roll served with soy sauce and wasabi. The albacore with green onions, ponzu, and fresh lemon was perfectly balanced. The salmon with toasted sesame and soy is my favorite here; it's so simple and absolutely delicious. Feels yummy in my body. And the lobster cut roll was a treat with its natural buttery richness. What keeps me coming back is the attention to detail. Sugarfish knows how to pair simple, quality ingredients for a totally awesome experience. The fish is excellent, and I love the clean cuts and texture of the fish along with the flavor. Everything just works together beautifully

Large dangerous sharp bone in sushi

I have been a big fan of Sugarfish for many years, but something is way off at the Pasadena location. First really bad mishap was a very large sharp bone being left in my sushi that would have sent me to the hospital had I swallowed it. Photos attached so y'all be careful eating their sushi based on whomever they've hired there. This is far below basic food safety standards but even more egregious for Sugarfish that allegedly prides itself in only providing the highest quality sushi. The second issue for me is I've now seemingly received someone else's order that was way more complicated that what I actually ordered. The order I got was obviously for 2 people and I feel bad they're not getting their dinner, on top of being annoyed at not getting my very simple order. I am so disappointed, but this seems to align with a general downward trend in Pasadena restaurants. Or maybe the owners are more focused on their sister restaurant KazuNori and have left Sugarfish to die a slow death.

Visited on a weekday evening and there was a small wait. We tried the The Nozawa Trust Me $40 and the Don't Think. Just Eat. $60. Both menus were very good! It is very dark in the restaurant and limited seats. Staff were knowledgeable and friendly. If you fill out the card and visit 2x before your bday you can get a free meal on your bday! There is a mandatory service fee. There is parking validation.

Ordered pick up for Mother's Day, 5 to go orders for about $230. 1st the online order showed 55 minutes then 75 minutes for p/u time when we put the order in at 5. I arrived there at 6:27, walked in and was told it's not ready "maybe another 10-15 minutes. I literally had to wait there until 7 p.m to finally get the food. I had to pay for garage parking because the food wasn't ready when it was supposed to be and I believe the food was just sitting somewhere and forgotten in middle of all the chaos that was going on in the front area. I drove 11 minutes door to door back to the house and the sushi and sashimi were stale as if it was sitting for half hour or more. Used to be a good place to eat, sorry it's gone down so bad

This was my first time at this location & the ambiance is much smaller than the other locations I've been to. Luckily, the 3 of us didn't have to wait so long. I ordered the "trust me" which is what I usually order & the price is very reasonable. The quality of fish is always fresh & the rice to fish ratio is small & perfect. I like that they serve their rice warm. I love their hand-roll. The seaweed is crisp & crunchy when you bite into their roll. It's never soggy like some of the other places I've tried. Service was great.

Let's talk about the best stuff... the food. 11/10... the "trust me" dinner option offers a wide variety of fish that are all incredibly fresh and tasty. Plates come out one by one which is helpful for digestion and making room for more (lol) So why 3 stars? Because we waited over an hour on a Thursday evening after we were told it'd be a 15 min wait. Fine.. but the hostess mentioned many tables had closed their check and were chatting.. also fine, I do that often. But at an establishment that does not offer reservations, not capping time at the table means no one will be sat in a timely fashion. We had to ask her for updates at least 3 times. Next time I rather be told up front the wait will be an hour, not 15 min.

Trust me, you'll love this place. Haha get it. Anyways I first came here in January of 2023 and have a ritual of coming basically once a month with my best friend and sometimes I stop in more or get it to go! The warm rice and quality of the fish is unbeatable for this price in my opinion. The sushi is just good quality fish and no crazy sauces or rolls made, which honestly is why the meal feels so light and filling in a great way. I do wish you could make reservations though, but you know thankfully I'm not opposed to getting early dinner at 5 pm to not wait and thankfully the soulcycle is right next to it so you can plan it right! My personal go to order that I've gotten more times than I can count is salmon nigiri, unagi nigiri, and a yellowtail cut roll with a hot green tea!

I have come here twice in the past month. This has been in my mind to go to since I saw their to go boxes trending online, but I did not expect to be so blown away by the Trust Me tasting menu. There is a bit of a wait, make sure to check in with the host before the dinner rush, I've waited 30 minutes and 1.5 hours the past two visits. Lighting is dim, there is a candle for ambiance for dinner, tables are small but fit one dish and a drink at a time. Onto the food, my pictures do not do these dishes justice but please know as someone who EXCLUSIVELY eats Yama/grocery store or AYCE sushi, the quality AND pricing of this tasting menu is insanely valuable. Tuna and Chutoro Sashimi- 10/10 perfect no notes, maybe my favorite, perfect way to start the sauce is acidic and a little sweet and cuts the fattiness of the fish well. I find it hard to not eat everything as fast as I can and savor the moment Nigiri- overall 9/10, was not a fan of the sesame on the salmon and the yellowtail wasn't exceptionally better than anything I've had before. The scallop maybe changed my life, my favorite sashimi piece and a surprising highlight Handrolls- Toro handroll 10/10 no notes wish this never ended Blue crab roll 8/10, very good but im not a big crab girl Bay Scallop Handroll 10/10 i love scallops I swapped the blue crab roll for this and ordered an additional one because it was so good "Best melt in your mouth sushi I've ever had" "Sensational" -quotes from my friends after we dined

Hello, Are dogs allowed in the outdoor seating area?

I don't think Sugarfish have an outdoor seating area. I think the tables/seats outside in the courtyards are for the general public.

Is the chef a trained sushi chef from Japan?

It's not one chef and there's many locations. If you go to nozawa bar the answer is yes. The real question is whether or not you could tell the difference. That old saying... "If you have to ask..." ppl don't realise there's not some "Japan… Read more

    Do you have teriyaki chicken?

    No, it's a sushi specialist.

    Is there outdoor seating currently?

    No there isn't.

Is any of the fish wild? Or all farmed?

    There is wild fish offering

Do they still have online checkin?

I don't believe so. Every time I've gone it has always been just in person wait list and you get a text message to follow your spot in line. I would love to be able to check in remotely because I live far away!

    Do they make Avocado rolls?

    No. No vegan options.

Do they require vaccine passports to dine in?

No, they do not, as of 3/4/22

How long is the wait on Sunday night?

    It's a 1.5 hr wait 730pm on a Thursday night. 17th in line

No, I was there on 10/5/21 and they said it is indoor dining only

Is this business (small) dog friendly for outdoor seating?

No it isn't. No outdoor seating 😕

Limited availability items also 2 pieces each order? Can we just order a la carte? Is there indoor dining yet?

Yes, you can order a la carte. The have a separate section on the menu for it. There is now indoor dining, but there aren't that many tables inside as it is a small restaurant.

How many pieces come with the Pink Lobster?

Pink Lobster like all nigiri options are 2 pieces per order.

Do they charge 16% service charge on take out orders?

16% is too much for to go. Tax plus 16 %, service charge, I can almost order a togo box.

    What time do they open?

    11:30am

    Do they have high chairs?

I think I've seen them in use for infants and toddlers. Call the restaurant to confirm.

Why is there a mandatory 16% charge? What is this for?

After more than a year away, I decided to give Osawa another try on May 8, 2026. Unfortunately, the experience confirmed why I had stopped coming. Around 9:02 p.m., my waiter came by to ask for last orders. I ordered chicken karaage. This is a simple dish that usually comes out in about 4 to 5 minutes. For whatever reason, the order did not arrive until around 9:26 p.m. -- almost 25 minutes later. It seemed obvious that the order had been forgotten. When the karaage finally arrived, it looked hastily sauced. Several parts of the chicken were unsauced, which is not how the dish was normally served in the past. Given the delay and the apparent mishandling, I did not touch the dish. A Japanese male manager wearing glasses then came over. He recognized me, and I explained that I had not been back for more than a year because of the food poisoning incident from fish in 2025. Instead of responding seriously, the manager smiled and giggled slightly, then launched into an irrelevant conversation about his connections in the Japanese food industry in Old Town Pasadena. When he asked why I had not touched the chicken, I explained the almost 30-minute delay and the problems with the dish. Rather than comping the item or offering a real apology, the manager asked whether I still wanted to eat it or would prefer to cancel it. He then ended the conversation by suggesting that I come in during weekday lunch for the $18 lunch specials. That response was bizarre and tone deaf. I did not return after a food poisoning incident to hear a sales pitch about lunch specials. I returned as a longtime customer giving Osawa another chance. Osawa's way of doing business has changed a lot. I've seen better customer service at Erewhon.

My partner and I shared the rainbow roll, mango cha cha roll, lemon salmon roll, salmon bento box, and cheese bulgogi. I really enjoyed the creative specialty sushi rolls, with my favorite roll being the mango cha cha roll. It tasted savory from the crispy shrimp tempura, while the fresh mango on top added a nice, refreshing pop of sweetness. As for the lemon salmon roll, it tasted fresh and more citrus-forward. Surprisingly, the salmon bento box was very filling and balanced. This included 2 pieces of grilled teriyaki salmon, 4 pieces of California roll, mixed tempura, miso soup, and a small salad with dressing. For anyone who does not eat raw fish, this would be the perfect dish. For the cheese bulgogi, there was a sweet-savory soy garlic flavor. I liked that the meat was thinly sliced, which paired perfectly with the gooey melted cheese. However, it was a bit saltier than I'd like it to be. Some rice and miso soup was served alongside this to balance out the richness from the cheese. Service could have been better. It seems that the staff were not very attentive at times, even though the place was not busy. Nonetheless, all of the food was pretty good and there was a chill atmosphere. This is a solid sushi bar to visit for either lunch or dinner.

In fact, the service was so slow that the servers started to clear our plates while we were waiting for them to bring out our food The servers were awkwardly clashing plates at our table and being difficult about refilling the water and tea. After dropping $800+ as a table, we were waiting on one last nigiri (Yellowtail Belly) to come out. We asked our waiter to check on it for us, and he came back to us saying it should have been on the plate that had the other Yellowtail Nigiri on it. The reason why we brought this up in the first place is because the two didn't come out together. He then brings another waitress who tells us it should have come out already, and then another who tells us completely different information (i.e. it came out with different fish). Overall an unpleasant experience. Would not be back again nor would I recommend this place to anyone, especially since they made such a big deal out of $10 nigiri on a $800 bill.

This is my go-to spot for sushi in Pasadena. Usually, my partner and I get a couple of lunch sets…read moresince it comes with a poke soba, miso soup, and some veggies, in addition to the entree. The salmon lunch bowl is lightly seared and the fish melts in your mouth. And the beef in the beef bowl is so tender and is phenomenal every time. I've been here 3-4 times in the last few months and the quality is always great, clean, and consistent. Great spot for a date night or a dinner with friends. Alison, our server, was attentive and always really courteous! She made some great sake recommendations as well.

A little pricy, but makes sense given the location in the epicenter of Old Town. I appreciated all the available options they had. Tonkotsu ramen, 8.7/10: Very comforting bowl of ramen. Chashu had a perfect ratio of fatty to lean pork and the sear on it was phenomenal. All the accoutrements on top were a nice addition. Corn, bamboo, and plenty of green onion all were great. I personally like the thinner firmer noodles, but the bowl still hit the spot. I also asked for firmer noodles, but they weren't quite there. The super creamy, fatty, pork broth really stood out though. The black garlic oil is top tier. Unagi, 8/10: Good buttery smooth piece of unagi. No complaints here.

Enjoyed lunch here after church today, no wait at noon when it first opened…read more We sat at the front indoor table by the mascot frog. Meg our server was very friendly and attentive. My husband ordered the tonkatshu ramen with chashu and added spicy tuna roll, while I ordered the Hungry Roll with a side of seaweed salad, Three items out of four came out fairly quickly, within 15 minutes, my Hungry roll took nearly 30 minutes but I think it's because it has baked salmon as an ingredient. It was SO scrumptious! Worth the wait! The tonkotsu broth and noodles of the ramen were flavorful and the chashu was cooked perfectly, not too fatty. We'll be back! Highly recommend!

This Pasadena location has significantly less foot traffic than the Montebello location which you can expect to wait at least 30 minutes to be seated during peak times. I was instantly seated at this location and enjoyed the ambience and warm lighting. Whenever I order at the Montebello location I order the house salad. To my surprise, the Pasadena house salad is extremely different from the dressing, to toppings, and size. I would come back to enjoy some of the classic rolls which I love at ojis at the Asian fries. However, I will stick to ordering my house salad at the Montebello location. The Pinot Grigio was lovely as well and paired nicely with what we ordered.
