I went into Sugoi this evening 5-29-24 and sat down at the bar because the place was packed and no tables were available, which is ok. However, I sat there from 7:45pm and left at 8:15pm without being helped or even acknowledged. I tried to get their attention, but still was not helped. Sugoi needs more help to handle their customer's. It's just not right to be overlooked and have to ask for service. Overall the food is really good, I just wished I had some for tonights dinner. Really like this place. Came on a Saturday for Lunch and it was fairly empty. Noticed they had to-go so a few folks came and left. We ordered 4 special rolls and loved them a lot. Really fair prices because sushi can get expensive. The service was prompt and personable. I think our 4 rolls and 2 drinks came out to $55, so thats pretty sweet. Hmmm...Where do I start!? Walked in and the smell was a hint of sewer. I was apprehensive as one would be but the old Juras in Turlock had that same possible "old pluming" problem and their pizza/wings were bomb! So....we proceeded. Craving Sushi from our normal place in Hayward, we were referred to this place. Took a seat and our server was friendly and accommodating. As for the restaurant itself? Our table was sticky, the menus were textured with god only knows what and should have been wiped down after every seating. Obviously they weren't. My gut feeling after we took a seat and saw what others had ordered then listened to new orders being taken was that this was a "sushi roll" kinda place and people weren't here for the Sashimi. When we go for Sushi we throw down and I was ready. We don't do rolls with the exception of a Spicy tuna roll. So, we ordered our usual starters: Miso soup, seaweed salad, 7 piece Sake, (Salmon) 7 piece Hamachi, (Yellowtail) 7 piece Maguro, (Tuna) 2 Spicy Tuna Rolls and 2 Iced Teas ($111. and change!) to start. Had to ask for plates, soy sauce bowls and wasabi. (Apparently the wasabi is held under lock and key because the two small smears we received were ridiculous) Soup, salad and Teas were fine. The Sashimi? (and I use that name shamefully) was a NO! NO! NO! All the pieces were about 3/16" THIN and 1-2 small lady pinkie widths wide. Huge disappointment for $15, $18 and $20 for each 7 piece set. The Salmon was a bit on the pasty side, the Yellow tail was a complete rip off with puny inconsistencies in each slice size with a mushy mouth feel and the tuna was a complete bust! Very firm, no flavor and a really poor thawed out frozen fish texture. Sadly, in this case, because the tuna was so awful, the spicy tuna roll was not good either. It seemed to us that every roll on the menu had crab involved which to me, was a gateway to use imitation crab. We were highly disappointed and decided to end the meal there. Also, paying took way more time than it should have. Tack on 20+ minutes after your meal for this to be completed. My take away is this: You cannot get good sushi in the Central Valley and when somebody tells you they found a good sushi place, ask them what it is they liked about it and what it is they order there. Chances are, they have never had great sushi or real fish and eat nothing but rolls. In the bay area we would have paid approximately $130 for 12 thick slices of real sashimi- (4)salmon, (4)tuna and (4)yellowtail an order of (2)scallops, (1)real lobster roll, (1)real crab spider rolls, (2)miso soup, (2)seaweed salad, (2)real spicy tuna rolls, (2)Uni, (2)spicy scallop rolls and left a fat tip because it's delicious! This place was a joke and way over priced!!! A great sushi place has good fish not good rice, not imitation substitutes and sauces to call it good. Proceed at your own risk and expect to pay too much for too little. Update: The volcanic gut and release the next day was totally expected after our experience and a lesson was learned to never eat Sushi in the Valley again. read more

The food is decent, but honestly, it's not worth the high prices they charge. For what you're paying, you'd expect a lot more in terms of quality and flavor. Beware! Do not believe the reviews from locals. I think sushi standard are different but we found this highly rated restaurant truly disappointing. If you are driving thru Los Banos from the Bay Area, subtract 2.5 stars to all reviews. Rice was soggy and overcooked. Fish portions on the sashimi were so so tiny that and thin that you could see thru see them. Flavors were off. They even charged us additional for ponzu sauce . I had one of the worse sushi rolls in my life here ( below supermarket sushi) it was called "ex boyfriend" and we ordered it because we love hamachi and it was the only roll on the menu with hamachi. sadly the hamachi topping was so thin and small that it was hidden below a tiny slice of jalapeño. The inside of the roll was supposed to be spicy tuna but it was drenched in sesame oil, so you could not taste the hamachi, the tuna or anything else only the sesame oil. Not good at all.
