We are very fond of sushi as a family. The progeny have been enjoying tekka maki and negihama maki ever since they had enough chompers to gum them up. And before that, they ingested some very nice omakase meals in utero. For years, we've had a tradition of ordering makizushi by delivery just about every Friday night. It's what the progeny have come to call "Friday night food." We have a few go-tos for Friday night food, but on a whim -- mostly because it popped up on a food delivery app we use and we're susceptible to advertising -- we decided to try a new place: Suki Ichiro. I knew only that it's located on the Upper East Side and a stand-alone establishment, not part of a chain; it offers a number of different "party platters" that allow customers to choose which rolls they want included; it's inexpensive (a 12 roll party platter was only $84); and online reviews seemed to be both positive and real, not written by paid shills. I'm so glad we went with it. For our "Party Platter A," we selected twelve classic maki, mostly involving yellowtail, tuna, avocado, and cucumber in different combinations. (We're hidebound traditionalists and find ingredients like spicy mayo and salmon to be new-fangled abominations.) To our happy surprise, the maki was of excellent quality for this price point. The yellowtail and tuna neta were all non-fishy. (Hah, I realize what I just wrote.) Obviously, they weren't as flavorful or well cut as what you'd find at a spendier, medium- or upper-tier establishment, but for Friday night food... it wasn't too shabby! Avocado included in rolls was ripe, cucumber and other vegetables were fresh. The rice was proper, short-grained sushi rice, prepared to a good texture. Although it was seasoned with a touch more vinegar and sugar than what a serious itamae might use, nothing was beyond the realm of reason. My bro has been craving for sushi so we decided to come here because it's in the area and the price look reasonable. Upon entry, the place is decided with wooden table and cushion chairs. The decoration was minimal but clean. The waitress brought over menu and water immediately. We decided to order the sashimi regular and maki combo C. The dishes were quickly prepared and arrived at our table. The fish looked and tasted fresh from the salad, miso soup, to the rolls and fish slices. The only slight feedback is that the waitresses should always have eyes on the customers just in case. The staff were talking and it took a minutes to get their attention. It's always such a pleasure to deal with such commensurate professionals. Despite being unable to contact them from noon 'til 5pm for some unknown communications reasons, which I am sure was neither theirs or mine in the making. Most probably cause by the impending cosmic rays of the Aurora borealis. Hehehe ! They realized I'd been attempting to contact them and sent me their email address. Finally after we'd resolved the matter - they proceeded to make the most amazingly delicious meal for me and my date - promptly delivered by a superbly metallic black thermal gear clad young lady - of whom I could only enjoy seeing her lovely eyes beneath the equally amazing motorcycle helmet she wore. The meal - whose photos I've attached was of: Miso Soup Edamame (which they included free due to my difficulty contacting them) Seaweed Salad Warm Wild Mushroom Salad (amazingly delicious !!!) Perfect Couple Roll (my personal favorite !!) Sashimi of Yellowtail, baby Yellowtail and Salmon Roe as well as a California Roll and a Yummy Roll and an additional bowl of miso soup for a friend (who wasn't with us). Very very solid 4.5 stars. This definitely is a specialty combo sushi place - think suburban, family-focused sushi restaurant, but in the very best way possible. In NYC! Very family friendly; really good prices ($6.75 for a yellowtail roll / $21 for a maki combo of 3 rolls; $16ish for a specialty roll). All of the rolls were good and a really good size. You won't be leaving hungry. The only downside was one of our party said the spicy rolls weren't as flavorful. But I loved my Perfect Couple roll. At the time, they were also doing a free chicken lettuce wrap dish with a purchase of over $50. They also offer a 10% discount on the next visit, which I will be taking advantage of the next time I come! Service was attentive and they checked on us multiple times. They did start getting busy during prime dinner time (6;30pm onward), and seemed like they handled it really well. I've never had the pleasure of dining here but based on their impeccable take-out service, I have no doubt their dining service is top notch. The food is always ready when I arrive. The restaurant offers an abundance of outdoor seating, and the interior is nicely dim, with most of the light projecting from the windows. When I'm close by, I love a Three Maki Roll Combo special. You can't beat the price, especially not in UES (only $14). This time for my partner, he chose Shrimp tempura, spicy tuna and mango shrimp roll. I got spicy Mayo on the side and it more so tasted like just plain Mayo. This is possibly why the spicy tuna with crispy rice didn't have much flavor. My favorite here is the sushi roll with salmon and fried tempura in it and also the salmon sashimi. The salmon tastes fresh and satisfied my sushi/sashimi craving each time. We Stumbled upon this place while on the upper Eastside. I Love it. I've been here 2 Fridays in a row. The service is excellent (thx Joey) and they have Blue Crab. They offer a rather large menu. I get the Harvest roll w Blue crab and shrimp tempura. I can't always find blue crab here in NY. Most places have that imitation crab meet which I don't like. Shrimp shumai is good. But the Best is the Yellow tail collar (not on menu). I get it every where in LA but it's hard to find here. It's Incredible!!! They only sell beer, wine and Saki that's the down part. We have been eating in and order in from it for many years. My particular favorite is its lunch bento box for a very reasonable price. Salmon teriyaki was almost the only variety I select. However, about one year ago, the joint seemed to change the ownership or management and it is listed as New Suki Ichiro on Uber Eats. Since then, the food quality has not been as good as before. The salmon teriyaki in the bento box is dry with very little to no teriyaki sauce, compared with plenty of sauce before. One time, it was even just in tasteless clear soup. The beef negimaki is too hard to chew on, and the pork katsu is too dry with little meat along with strong older oil flavor. Another disappointment is that it no longer offers Japanese sake (no liquor license any more) which I always like to order when having Japanese style food. I believe, this restaurant, both old and new, was/is run by non-Japanese, likely Chinese. Even though one should not expect the food quality there to be on a par with Japanese run places, the quality, I hope, can at least match its predecessor. Like: closeness to home, reasonable prices, quick fulfilment for take out orders. Dislike: food quality which needs improvement. read more
