I regret not finding this place sooner! We ordered Chicken Salad, Red Lentil Wrap, Lentil Balls Rice Plate and the banana pudding. The veggies in the chicken salad were steamed/stir fried, just the right amount with appropriate amount of oil. It's difficult to find a well cooked, marinated and tender chicken in SF and Sumac went beyond my expectations. The lentil ball rice and wrap were amazing too! Surprisingly the lentil balls weren't fried but steamed (I think) and yet tasted awesome! The pudding was cherry on the top - smooth and light, comes pretty close to Magnolia bakery in Chicago. This place was amazing. We stopped for a quick bite and we're surprised by the quality. Everything was super fresh and flavor was immaculate. The best flavored chicken and veggies I have had in a long time. A lot of fancy restaurants in SF don't compare to this tiny hole in the wall. After a disappointing 2 weeks of overpriced food that didn't meet expectations this gave me hope for the food of SF. Wow, this place is good. I've traveled to Turkey several times and the food here tastes the same, very authentic. Yes, like others complained in reviews below it is a bit pricey for the portion size but you can tell the veggies & ingredients are super fresh. I feel good after eating the food here - whereas most places my stomach can feel the cheap quality of ingredients. So it's worth the price and the food always does fill me up. Also my food was ready earlier than expected which was awesome (I got takeout, you don't have to even go inside they hand it to you outside!). Definitely give this place a try! read more

So so good, we are thankful for this amazing Turkish food here in Russian Hill. I've had most of the menu at this point and it has consistently been delicious, especially the chicken and red lentil dishes. I have a very sensitive stomach but this has been one of the few places I can enjoy without feeling bad, it is all quite healthy and fresh! The only drawback with ordering from Sumac is you will inevitably end up like me someday, realizing you have ordered most of the menu many times over :D read more

last night (monday) i legit reordered the same meal i got on sunday night because it was that good. my very first order with sumac was the lentil + bulgar balls over rice, carrot labneh, babaganoush, and baklava because those were the most highlighted items on previous reviews. i wasn't impressed with the carrot labneh, it just tasted like a bland mayonnaise-y cream cheese mix that happened to be orange. baklava is solid. but let's move onto the lentil + bulgar balls and babaganoush. i happen to love LOVE mediterranean food so i've eaten babaganoush many a time. but sumac's version is legit hands down the best, very best i've ever had. it's kind of like crack but in vegetable form. so here's the deal - the bag of pita that comes with the babaganoush isn't enough for the entire container of babaganoush. but here is how you really make the meal shine - you mix a half container of hot sauce into the babanoush. eat with the pita until the pita is no mo'. then you take the rest and plop it on top of the lentil + bulgar ball over rice. i am a sauce person so on sunday night, i used one entire sumac labneh sauce + a half sumac vinagrette (requested separately), and the remaining half of the hot sauce they provide. the vinagrette didnt actually add much to the meal, imho. one container of sumac labneh sauce was too much. still delicious, but too much cuz it made the rice clump up. but on monday night, i used only half of the labneh sauce and half of the sumac hot sauce with the babaganoush topper and holy shitballs, batman. i'm literally eating the leftovers for tuesday's lunch. it was so good i didnt want to toss even a few leftover bites. the lentil + bulgar balls have a center of deep fried onion bits that dont look like much but they add so much to the dish. make sure you get a tiny piece of fried onion with every bite. tl;dr - sumac is damn good. DAMN GOOD. considering how many great sf food options closed down due to corona, i'm so glad sumac survived. the only downside is that i discovered sumac which is two blocks from my home, two weeks before i'm due to move to oakland. sadness.... but i'd come back to north beach just for sumac. it's that serious. read more

3.5 stars. Great (much needed) addition to Russian hill! Super friendly staff. I've had both the Kofte salad and the chicken rice bowl. Both had great fresh flavors. However, I do think the rice bowl portion size is on the small side for $15. The salads seem to be a better value. read more

First meal in SF when we arrived around 1:00pm. Rode the cable car which dropped us off just a couple of blocks away. Easy walk. We were surprised to see that it was a walk-up window for grab and go with no seating available, and included three restaurants in one. Somehow we didn't see that info on the yelp site for this place if it was there. However the food looked really good and it was busy with delivery people picking up so we decided to order anyway. We tried one of the salads and added the lentil balls with crispy fried onions in the middle. SO good! Also got the meatball bowl with rice. Flavors in both dishes were complex and there were lots of surprises in every bite! We also tried the soup. My husband is not a soup lover but REALLY liked it! We walked a ways and found a step to sit and eat on. Not ideal but the quality of the food made up for it. A must when you are in the area and looking for a delicious healthy meal! Placed a pickup order yesterday, and it was my first time ordering from here! I got the kofte bowl, and it was fire!!! The meatballs were great, and the seasoning on the garbanzo beans and vegetables made the dish flavorful. It also came with two sauces, one white garlic and one red, hot sauce! Due to high oil content, food lacked flavor and taste. Portions were too small for the price but was glad i didn't had to eat more of it.
