This is my favorite sushi place, and it is great for special occasions. I haven't tried anything I haven't liked, and I have tried most of the menu now. I wasn't a big fan of the bento boxes, but I think I was spoiled and became accustomed to their rolls, appetizers, and wonderful atmosphere that ordering a bento to go just didn't hold a candle. The food is delicious without being overpowering and as long as you don't eat like my boyfriend(I think his legs are hollow), you can have leftovers! For a sushi place in Idaho, this is wonderful! Sumisu is absolutely phenomenal! They use fresh, high-quality ingredients, and they prepare their sushi with extra care and love!! The atmosphere is easygoing, welcoming, and the restaurant is always incredibly clean! Feeling adventurous? I recommend the Dozo Domo - chefs choice. I have never been disappointed!! The staff is quite knowledgeable if you have any questions. It is definitely a local favorite!! I learned to enjoy sushi in Asia and would never expected to find a sushi restaurant of this quality in Pocatello, Idaho! It is a fusion restaurant, so all dishes are not "pure sushi", like their seafood bisque, which is one of the best things on the menu, but the sushi roles are delicious. (My favorite is the Tiny Dancer.) Since the restaurant opened, I believe I have sampled most everything on the menu and have always been pleased. The raw dishes are extremely fresh and tasty. The prices are not fast food prices, but are competitive to fine dining in town and are a good deal for sushi anywhere and a less expensive than most in larger cities. At lunch the bento boxes are a great deal. Staff is friendly and service is good, but not always "fast", but this is not fast food and the rolls are prepared on order, so sit back and enjoy the experience!!! read more

Outstanding, quality fresh sashimi on sushi rolls!! Obento dish was substantial coming with sides (we had tempura, miso soup, small sushi bites, all very good). Teriyaki salmon very tasty & fresh. Slow and bad service. We had to ask for everything. The sushi is equal to grocery store or gas station level sushi. When I tried to send my roll back the waitress informed me since I ate a piece I would be charged. I left, and didn't finish the roll, went to the sandpiper for a dinner snack. I'm from another town. Who would have thought you would find 5 star sushi in Pocatello Idaho. Well... I did today! What a fun and cool place from the brick walls and the large dinning area to the great service. Great sushi bar to watch sports on as well. By recommendation I had the Seafood Bisque which truly was the best I have ever had. It was so rich and full of flavor. I also tried the Crab Rangoon which was very tasty. I finished my lunch with the Ghost sushi roll which was a nice change up on spicy Tuna which also included Albacore and a nice hint of ghost pepper for just the right heat. Seriously authentic sushi at Sumisu. Tempura Vegetables are crisp and delicious, and you get a good amount for a good price. We had a Godzilla Roll and Pure Bliss Roll and would recommend both, but the Godzilla especially. Will go again next time we're in Pocatello. read more

The place was pretty basic, (with a little different smell) but the reviews were good. Ambiance is not really important, it all about the food! And as I've said before, Sushi is usually either good or bad, not much in between. I decided to try the Tiny Dancer Roll (Good - No Krab - not a fan of Krab or Salmon in my sushi, but instead more Spicy Tuna) and the China Doll Roll (Great!). We finally had a chance to return to Sumisu last night, and I must update my review to add a star. While I still lament the lack of sake or Japanese beer, the food has evolved to be truly outstanding. Between the two of us, we enjoyed delicious teppanyaki, two sushi rolls, a marvelous ceviche, and the best mussels in cream sauce that I've ever had the pleasure of eating. This restaurant has been around for a while and yesterday was my first time trying it. I really loved everything about my meal. We had the soy beans as an appetizer and they were seasoned just right. We also got some hot tea which was really good too. I had the Godzilla specialty role which was very good. My brother had the Tiny Dancer and I would recommend that as well. There was about fifteen pieces and each piece was a little smaller than the size of my palm. Very full and very satisfied. Although it is a little more expensive than what I am used to paying but the overall experience and the taste was worth it. This place is worth a try!! read more

Their rolls are always superb, the tempura isn't too heavy, the rolls aren't overly seasoned or overly covered in sauce like other places. I have eaten at nice sushi restaurants in larger cities, even near the coast, and this one rivals those. I love sushi. A lot. And this place is fantastic. Because Pocatello has limited choices for restaurants, not to mention the location aspect, I was expecting to get sick from the sushi. To clear the air, that wasn't the case. The interior was of simple decor, with a couple of pictures on the wall behind me, loved the thin black frames by the way. There were four of us seated in the table right in the middle when you first walk in.. so much for privacy as I could easily tapped tapped the guy at the table behind me without moving an inch; might as well allow the sake to kick in while in the spotlight of a fishbowl in bumf*** Idaho.. (nothing against it, I'm just used to the city of angeles) Their edamame was tasty with the butter garlic mixture with coarse salt sprinkles, just a little too much butter for my taste. I'd prefer just garlic and a little salt w/ soy sauce and wasabi = perfecto. I had the chef's special on 08/20/2011, the Ghost roll. It was a spicy tuna roll with avocado and topped with a small bit of seared ahi tuna and some sirracha. There was more to the roll in the way of sauces and what-not, but if you like sirracha and spicy tuna, get it.. I also tried the China Doll, I wasn't impressed. The Ceviche appetizer was very good too, so another recommendation there. Oh and we had those little crab/cream cheese wontons; those didn't blow my tastebuds out of the water, but they were good. What did take the cake, or should I say, I took the whole cake when it came to Ty Ku .. sake !! Yum yum and yum .. Junmai ginjo, ran about $22 for 330mL .. Sometimes the service and seating are slow because they are typically quite busy, but I will keep going back because nobody can beat the taste and quality of sushi here. This was a very nice place. I did have to wait 10mins for a table but i can not blame them because it was so busy. I had about 5 different rolls including their miso soup. Everything came out at a nice pase. I ordered the calamari rings as an appetizer it was tasty. However, it could have used a longer time in the fryer and extra spices. The lemon was a perfect touch. The California roll was not a favorite but the server let us get another roll instead. the cali roll was a little to plain for us. A great tip would be maybe add shredded crab with mayo for a better texture. Other than those 2 things i really enjoyed my time there. My husband and I went in and were seated immediately. It was not busy at all. They gave us our menus, we decided what we wanted within in 5 minutes and shut our menus so they would come take our order. After sitting there watching waitresses walk past us several times without even acknowledging us for at least 20 minutes, we got up and left. This is the second time we have had to wait forever for someone to take our order. I think from now on we will give Fuji all of our sushi business. read more

My wife and I went here and the food was some good, and some OK. The miso soup was much better than usual Japanese restaurants. On the other hand my roll was good tasting but not made so it held together. It was very hard to eat. My wife's was slightly better. We were told we had a 25-30min wait on a busy Friday night which was fine when we arrived at the restaurant. We waited about 20min but was told we could have a table if we were done in less than an hour because our table was reserved. So I said if we get our food in time.
