I ordered delivery on Feb. 8th so I can't comment on the actual environment or ambience, but the food was very good. I ordered calamari and the ramen. The calamari was some of the best I've ever had and was perfectly crunchy while not rubbery. The ramen was beautiful, and the egg and pork were cooked to perfection. Everything was delicious and well-packaged too. Nothing leaked or spilled especially when it's always a risk when you order noodles for delivery. It has a great cool atmosphere and the food is unique and delicious! We both had a mango roll, pad Thai, and rice pudding (local restaurant week special) plus some steamed chicken dumplings. Sun Cuisines is easily one of my favorite discoveries I've made within the past year. I've had great service and amazing food with each visit, making Sun a must do, especially when my parents drive in for dinner. Who knew how amazing black rice sushi was? Not me, that's for sure. There's plenty of parking in the back, where the main entrance is. I've never had to wait for a table, though I suspect as Sun becomes more popular, this may become an issue. For now, it's been really nice to be able to just sit right down. A bonus for those of you who remember when the location was Great Northern Pizza, you can still tell with the layout and some of the decorations. It's a nice atmosphere overall, and I'm always appreciative of a place where I don't have to shout to be heard when trying to maintain a conversation. Now, about that black rice sushi...yes. This is easily the best sushi I've had anywhere. I'm not sure if it's black rice magic, but Sun has done a great job in crafting twists on the traditional roll. My favorite anywhere is spicy yellowtail, which is an obvious choice for me here. I usually combine it with spicy tuna or spicy salmon, and I can't leave out the vegetarian rolls because they are that good. I can attest to the mango roll (super sweet) and the grand avocado roll (melts away like a dream) in particular. If sushi isn't your thing, there is a full menu of Asian cuisine options such as General Tso's chicken or Pad Thai, just to name a few options. Sun is definitely living up to the "fusion" description in the menu. Needless to say, everything I've seen being carried out looks amazing. If you've never had sushi before, consider trying the black rice rolls at Sun first to see what it's all about. We checked this place out on Saturday night and really enjoyed it. Got some steamed chicken dumplings, the mango roll, a spicy salmon specialty roll, and he got some noodles (I'm not sure what they were but they were eaten in their entirety so I am assuming they were good). I really liked the rolls with the black rice, it was nice and earthy and I actually much preferred these to rolls I've had with brown rice (plus mango in rolls always makes me happy). The dumplings were also super tasty, the staff was nice, and the inside was cute! I definitely want to come back to try everything else on the menu, it all looked amazing! read more

Sun is our go-to spot. We do takeout from them biweekly and whether it's pickup or dine in, they never disappoint. The pad Thai is delicious as well as their spring rolls. Their mango roll, which is done up in black rice, is quite possibly the most amazing thing I've ever put into my mouth. On top of consistently delicious food, Sun also delivers BIG on service. Other restaurants really need to adopt Sun's standards for service. Every server and employee in there is caring, patient and genuinely friendly. Highly recommend! You will leave happy! read more

The 5th Dimension, a popular 80s R&B group, once said "Let the sunshine in." I'm asking you to let the Sun Cuisines into your life. I was not looking forward to going out to Sun with my parents because I didn't think I liked sushi, after trying both fish and non-fish varieties at two different place. However, this place totally rocked my world. I can't say enough about the food. I ordered the mango roll with no avocado and it blew my mind. The black rice was almost like a crunchy brown rice and the filling (mango, sweet potato, sweet chili sauce) was moist and sweet. I ate all eight pieces of the roll in about 3 minutes. Our group also had veggie tempura and the green garden roll as an appetizer. I loved the veggie tempura-- it was crispy and addicting. Only thing I didn't like was there were two pieces of some sort of green pepper that were so spicy, I couldn't handle it. I drank about 1.5 glasses of water after just one bite. Green garden roll was good, but I preferred the sweetness of mine. All of us also ordered entrees as well, although I was so full by the time they came out that I wish I hadn't. My sister had a salad with black rice, mangos, and some other ingredients that was fantastic. My mom had the fried rice and it was okay, but not great. The chicken was not very moist and she wasn't expecting it to be so spicy. My entree, the mango chicken, was so disappointing. It was spicy and not sweet and the chicken was very dry and game-y. I thought about sending it back but ultimately took it home for my roommate. My mom and I figured chicken is just not their specialty. However, despite the lackluster entrees, I completely loved the appetizers. I will be back soon for those. It is also worth noting that the service was good. We had a complicated order with two checks and our waiter was very patient. It was weird that our food came out at separate times, but he was very knowledgeable about the menu and let me try some black rice before I ordered, as I had never had it before. I came here a few weeks ago for lunch with a coworker. The place was nearly empty when we walked in and we were seated immediately and brought water. The entire staff was very friendly and welcoming. The redone restaurant was really calming and modern. We both ordered a two roll lunch special. I asked if they had spicy tuna rolls even though they weren't on the menu and the waitress told me they did. I also ordered a spicy shrimp roll. My coworker ordered regular tuna and yellowtail. I personally was not a huge fan of the black rice sushi. The rice was a bit too hard for me but this was clearly a personal preference considering my coworker loved the texture of it. I also was disappointed because the "spicy roll" was only a regular roll with spicy mayo drizzled on top. Also, the menu didn't mention that any of the rolls I ordered included cucumber and the rolls themselves were about half filled with cucumber. Most people wouldn't care but I have a really strong aversion to cucumbers. (I can't explain it, I've just never liked them!) I ended up pushing it out of all of the rolls and ended up with a messy pile of rice and fish. :( Despite my cucumber experience, I will definitely try this place again. The décor was beautiful and wait staff was great. I don't think I will order the sushi again. I prefer the traditional spicy rolls at places such as Wasabi and want to stick with fluffy white rice and spicy mayo mixed in with my fish sans cucumber. I love the Sun restaurant on Niagara Street in the Black Rock area. But the new location in Williamsville is even better. We found plenty of parking in the lot behind the restaurant and the entrance is right there. The dining room was very busy but we still did not have to wait for a table for two. ( For those who like sitting at a sushi bar, there were plenty of seats there.) The menu has so many choices that we both decided we were going to have to come back another time to try other items. We ordered the fresh vegetable spring rolls, but the waiter instead delivered the deep fried ones. We decided not to give him a hard time, and we enjoyed every bite. We ended up ordering Chicken Curry and the Chicken Pumpkin Curry (served in a hollowed out pumpkin, of course). The Chicken Curry was very mild and could not really taste the curry; we do prefer it to be a little more flavorful, so used some soy sauce to give it a boost. The sauce in the Pumpkin Curry was very thin, but had a wonderful flavor. The only thing missing was any kind of green vegetable with our meals. The next time I would order the salmon curry with broccoli - that sounded very good and the picture on the menu was appealing. We feel the prices were a little high but the serving sizes were enough to take a bit home for lunch the next day. We will definitely go back another time to try more menu choices. read more

The atmosphere is nice and I like the fresh open space to compliment the more modern style decor but in the end it's really all about the food. We ordered quite a bit because we wanted to get a real experience of a variety of things. (Soups, sushi, spring rolls, Thai dish, Burmese dish). The soup, sushi, and spring rolls all came out very quick. The soup was fine, not too spicy which is always nice. The spring rolls were a bit too fried which made them overly crunchy. The sushi was very fresh, the tuna was great in color, and the roll was nice and neat. Our entrees were a bit underwhelming. We ordered them medium for spice and felt that the flavor was just missing some key notes for Thai and Burmese cuisine. Overall we had a good experience and if you're planning on going I recommend ordering sushi. We will go back but it's not going to be one of our regular dine in or takeout spots. read more

You don't make the customer drive back to the restaurant for a false transaction and offer a gift card in the amount for that false transaction. I went here with my friend on 3/13/22. The food is decent. But I hope this review informs others of how unprofessional the staff are. My friend and I split a bill of $62 (pre-tip) and then on 3/19/22, I noticed that I got charged $86 on my credit card. I called the restaurant for them to verify because I originally thought "things happen". But the restaurant asked me if I have the customer's copy which I didn't and he said "this is why you keep your receipt because we can't really check anything from here." I was appalled by this response and demanded them to recheck their records. He said he can't at the time and will call me back. 4 hours went by and I still haven't heard anything so I went to the restaurant. It took a while for them to find my transaction and initially offered me a $50 gift card for the restaurant rather than a cash/credit refund. I refused to accept it and was just going to call my credit card company to refute the false transaction at the scene. Then they refunded me the $50 in cash and told me not to call the credit card company (which is understandable and I didn't). Like I said, mistakes happen. But this is not how you fix it. You don't make the customer drive back to the restaurant for a false transaction and offer a gift card in the amount for that false transaction. Never going here again. Also, how unfortunate to see a Burmese restaurant fail to recognize their own history and have The Rising Sun Flag used by the Japanese during WW2 which is equivalent to the Nazi Flag by the Germans in WW2 as their logo. read more

I was impressed and so was my friend who broke iftar with some delicious sushi and noodle dishes. The atmosphere was pleasant and the service was great! We waited a really long time for our check & ended up walking up to cash out, but perhaps they were being polite instead of rushing us at the end of the night with only 2 tables left? The pad see ew wasn't as flavorful as I'd expected, but the udon noodles were spectacular and spicy. We split the black rice date night sushi combo & veggie samosas. The sushi was delicious & I wish the samosas came in the # of people at the table, or some multiple of that. We had 2 people and 3 samosas...breaking the extra one in half wasn't ideal, so it might make more sense to serve only 2 or 4. Little suggestions = little appreciations. I would be remiss if I didn't mention the Burmese milk tea. Hands down the best part of the meal! We ordered one, then two, and were tempted to order a 3rd...so so good. Well done, Sun! Somewhat disappointing experience. Service was poor, wasn't even asked what I wanted to drink, server didn't check on us once meal served. Ordered "Sun Ramen" and the broth was flavorless. Other meal items were good but also did not like table placement, felt on top of other people. The issues were only made worst by the "Williamsville elite" taking selfies and treating this place like it was some kind of big deal. My advice is to go to the Niagara st location where you don't have to shop at the walker center for your ensemble prior to going to fit in. read more

This place has black rice that's out of this world. The only place in North America that makes black rice. Their sushi is out of this world always fresh and they will customize it any way you want. The best part about this place is the price. Two of us got two soups and three sushi rolls and it only cost us $25. This is the place to go when your hungry and/or want to try Black Rice or different cultural food. Sushi menu goes on and on. My dad & I like to share a pot of the Jasmine Tea with every visit. I ordered the ~Lunch Box with Salmon~ and it was full of salad, fruit, mango sushi, Veggie Roll and more. I needed help to finish it off. Wow! Or, should I say "triple wow!". Great setting, great food, and great service! I can hardly believe this place was a so-so pizza joint. The menu has a lot more choices than I remember the original location on Niagara Street having. But, then again I haven't been there for a long time because I thought I didn't like Burmese food. Surprise! Two of us enjoyed dinner here. My friend started with the coconut shrimp, and I started with the Samusa ( Fried Burmese raviolis filled with curry spices, potatoes, onions and served with a spicy sauce). We both tried a bit of each, and although mine were good.... hers were the winner. The coconut topping and sweet sauce made them a deliciously decadent way to start a meal. For an entree I had the Mango Chicken (chicken, mango, green chili, garlic, onion, and cashews stir fried in a spicy sauce). The flavors were wonderfully balanced and the mango tasted so fresh it could have been picked off a tree that very day. But, there were no cashews and I found that to be slightly disappointing. I also would have liked the option of getting black or brown rice on the side instead of sticky, boring, white rice. My friend had the Pad Thai with Chicken (stir-fried noodles with beans sprouts, garlic, green onions, eggs, carrots, and peanuts). I had a bite and it was the best Pad Thai I had ever tasted! Perfect balance of flavors and textures! I think next time (and there definitely will be a next time) I may just say "I'll have what she ordered". read more

I really do not get the black rice, other than it looking cool. I personally dislike the nutty taste or barley like texture. Sushi should be all about the fish, not the rice, and in my opinion you can get better quality sushi at Wegmans. The entrees are okay, the Burmese dishes are the best, with the salads and noodle dishes being my favorites. The only thai entree I have tried is the Pad Se U, and it was bland. Sun should concentrate on the Burmese cuisine side, and stop trying to be three restaurants in one. read more

May be I walked in with very high expectations for this place reading the reviews and comments and when the expectations were not met - a big disappointment. There has been times, I would try to find an opportunity to go to their downtown restaurant and taste the food but it never worked out. When I found out they opened one in Williamsville, I was determined to check out one day. So few of my friends chose to go out to Sun Cuisines for dinner to celebrate an event. The ambience and the service is good and hence the 2 star. The food was 'OK'. I got their Burmese slow cooker Chicken curry and it was blatant with less or no salt and spice level. I felt like eating a chicken shredded spice like soup with no flavor to it. One of our friend ordered Veggie Pad thai and it was heavily loaded with the fish oil (I know fish oil is an ingredient but I have had better Pad Thai were the flavor is not overpowering in the food). Another friend ordered Veggie Yellow Curry and it was watery than being a curry. Overall food experience was poor and not up to the expectation and not for the value we paid for. First of all, the place itself looks really nice. It feels high end and the decor is tasteful and nicely done. We arrived on a week day at around 9:15pm, and promptly ordered satay chicken and Tom yum goong (shrimp) soup, Thai hot, to start. While for our main courses I ordered panang beef curry Thai hot, and Ethan ordered pork ramen. The Tom Yum was excellent. The satay chicken was flavored well but the chicken was dry, overcooked and somewhat rubbery. The beef in the panang curry tasted off, like "steakums" meat (vile) so I sent it back and asked them to prepare a chicken panang instead. The chicken was dry and rubbery and the panang curry had no heat. It was also way too sweet. It was inedible. I'm giving three stars because they at least removed the panang from the bill. Ethan enjoyed his Ramen and thinks we should give it another try, and make sure we're there earlier, as maybe the food is better when prepared earlier in the evening, but I don't share that view. To me it shouldn't matter if it's your first or last customer in an evening, they all deserve to be provided with high quality well prepared food to enjoy. I'm not planning on returning anytime soon, which is quite a shame because they're only a few minutes from home, and visually the place looks great. It's just a shame that the food quality didn't live up to the decor. read more

The restaurant had a high end feel, but the prices weren't outrageous. A little goes a long way here as the sushi rolls (made with delicious black rice) are very filling (you get 8-pieces per roll). My first taste of Sun was at Expo Market, and I wanted to get what I had there when I came to the actual restaurant with two friends. The waiter was so patient with me and helpful, and I was able to recreate the raw salmon roll I had at Expo. We shared a vegetable potsticker appetizer, and we each got different types of sushi for our lunch. Everyone was extremely pleased and said they would go back again! They never screw up orders, and everything is always the same healthy portion and high quality fresh food. From sushi to their Thai and Burmese cuisine, you cannot go wrong here. I love the avocado smoothie, veggie combo, pad Thai, ramen (although I hope they get a vegan ramen option), curries, sweet potato roll with milky way sauce, and fried gourd and tempura veggies. Disappointment. Sadness. Longing for something better. These are all the feels that Sun Cuisines in Williamsville left me with after placing a large takeout order. Let me back up. Saturday evening my husband and I settled on Thai takeout. We got into a good-spirited argument about going with our old delicious, never-fails-us standby - his pick - versus taking a risk and trying something new - my preference. We always order from Thai Orchid Cafe. In the end, we compromised. We got the bulk of our order from Sun and picked up his fav dish from Thai Orchid. The shortest way to say it is this: the whole time I was eating, I was dismayed and depressed I wasn't eating Thai Orchid, because it is SO much better. Let's start with the pad Thai at Sun. The bean sprouts were wilted. The copious amount of noodles had an overwhelming tomatoey (and not Thai) flavor. The chicken was rubbery. The shreds of carrot were clearly from a bag. Onto the fried pork rolls. These were soaking in grease. The mixture inside was barely edible it tasted so bad. And the pad see ew had little flavor. The basil fried rice had a bitter, sour taste. The sesame chicken was drenched in a thick red sauce that was under-whelming. The food at Sun did not taste fresh. It tasted like a hastily put together afterthought. There are far too many delicious Thai places in the area to spend money at this joint. One of the best is Thai Orchid Cafe, an establishment that now has 110 percent of my loyalty.
