I've been going to Sun Devil for about 15 years but never use them for any job over $200 because they have demonstrated many times that they are either untrustworthy or unskilled (sometimes both). I've gone to many locations all over the valley and two weeks ago I went to the Elliot location for an oil change. I always do my oil changes at Sun Devil because the price cannot be beat and they have Valvoline Max Life which I like to run in a few of my vehicles. Also, they include a tire rotation and in depth inspection with each oil change. Oil changes must be a loss for them to do but they make up for it with the inspection which always results in many findings no matter what condition your vehicle is in. And i actually kinda like that because even though 80% of what they say is wrong or totally made up, the other 20% of the time I get a heads up on something that I can take care of at my own place either by myself or at a better shop. Anyways, I told them that my vehicle was vibrating during acceleration and to look for a possible culprit during the inspection. So about 20 minutes later they call me out to the shop to show me their findings/recommendation: A bad wheel bearing and an entire front end suspension rebuild (lower and upper control arms, stabilizer bar, etc). Total quote: $2300. So we are looking at the vehicle and I grab the tire and shake it and there is indeed play and thus the wheel bearing is bad. I don't believe the control arms diagnosis so I ask the mechanic "did you check the U joints?" And he says "yeah, everything else looks great." So I pay for the oil change and get out of there. This past weekend I took the same vehicle to Firestone to have the tire balance checked and while it was on the lift I asked them to check the U joints since I never believed Sun Devil and sure enough the front joint on the rear driveshaft was totally shot: tons of movement and orange dust around the housing (u joints 101). I went home, jacked up the rear end, and removed the driveshaft and the u joint and looking inside the joint there was no grease whatsoever and several broken needle bearings. So $15 later my truck is running smoothly with zero vibrations. So again, the 80/20 rule: they were right about the wheel bearing (which i had replaced for $125 elsewhere) but the $2000+ suspension quote was totally off base and wouldn't have done anything to stop the vibrations. And the most important part being that they lied to my face when I asked if they checked the u joints. What makes the story even sadder is that this vehicle in question is 20 years old, has 216,000 miles, and is worth $500-$1,000. If you're going to try and hustle someone for $2,000 then make sure the car is worth more than that and that they don't know anything about auto repair. It's hard to believe they could be that bad at picking their victims though so that points to the bad mechanics theory. Unscrupulous or Incompetent? The world may never know. Bummer city. I recently purchased a new-to-me 2018 Subaru and brought it to Sun Devil for a sale inspection before the return window ran out. The tech and the advisor said the car was in great shape all around and congratulated me on my "new" car. A week later, after the return window was up, I took the vehicle to the Subaru dealer for an open recall. While the recall was not an issue for my car, the tech confirmed the entire underside of the vehicle is rusted from the NY weather (where we purchased from). This was something visible with a total inspection of the car, which is what I paid Sun Devil to do. Now I need to seek rust remediation in AZ, where rust is a nearly non-issue. Just wish I would have gotten the top tier service my friends recommended when it was my turn. read more

Sun Devil Auto are crooks!! My wife took her car in with an issue with here windshield wipers, thought it might be the motor. She has an extended warranty and that covers the motor. The issue was that the wiper transmission broke and needed replacing. Sun Devil wanted $850 for the repairs and I felt that was way too much so I looked up the part and it was $100 from AutoZone. I YouTubed the install and it was easy according to the video so I decided to give it a shot. Total job was $100 and an hours worth of work and low and behold..... everything works like a charm. Sun Devil..... can you justify charging over $700 of labor? I didn't think so. I will never do business with you because you are a joke and take advantage of people. You are thieves and need to be held accountable for that, you suck. read more

I had a good experience taking my car here for an oil change and courtesy inspection. I called to schedule my appointment for the next morning. Dropped the car off and I got a ride back home from my husband. Honestly, I probably should waited, they had my car up in the garage so quickly. I received a call a few hours later letting me know that my car looked good and they'd finished the oil change. They did let me know about the manufacturer recommended services based upon mileage, which I declined. Overall, I'm happy with the experience, price point and the overall service. I have an interlock in my car and that has never been a problem when getting my oil changed. I went here and informed the person at the front desk that I would need to start my car to bring it into the shop and vice versa. He understood and said they would come get me when it was time. Then some time passes and I see my car is no longer in the spot I had parked. Next thing I know the technician is finished and saying I need to come start my car. I get in and a lockout timer is on my interlock, meaning someone had tried to blow into it but did it incorrectly. I thought maybe he started the car and I had missed my chance to blow into it before he came and grabbed me. I asked him what had happened and he said that was it. Then I proceeded to put my mouth on the strip and start the car and drive away. I had an uneasy feeling and didn't want that to count against me so I called my interlock company and told them what happened. They logged into my account and saw that the technician had ILLEGALLY BLOWN INTO MY INTERLOCK 10 TIMES. First of all, that is illegal and just common sense NOT to blow into someone's interlock. But then on top of a PANDEMIC going on?? I have no idea if this guy has taken precautions when it comes to social distancing and safety. None of the technicians were wearing face masks or gloves. I quite possibly could have contracted covid now. Need to go get tested. This guy has no idea if I'm immune compromised so he is putting me in danger!! I am LIVID because I even asked the technician what happened and he had the opportunity to tell me what he did and failed to mention any of that, he straight up lied about the situation. But I have screen shots and every logged attempt from my interlock company showing proof that he indeed blew into my interlock TEN FREAKING TIMES. I called and complained and the manager didn't really do much. I never write reviews but this is something that needs to be known. If this is happening to other people and they are unaware, it truly scares me because then people's lives, their health is at risk. Especially during these crazy times. They sounded overly friendly on the phone almost like a scam but, THEY REALLY ARE GENUINE and NICE guys in there! No feeling like you're gonna get ripped off or told you need a ton of work on something you've never heard of. It's a comfortable atmosphere - ladies, no worries on feeling like dirty men are staring at you! My car has been making an unhappy noise for a couple months. I took it into *an unnamed* auto shop in October and they couldn't find the issue. Finally I took it into Sun Devil Auto and they had all the details for me in two hours. My air compressor kit needed to be replaced, or my belt was going to break. I called around and did price comparisons on the repairs I needed -- they gave me a good price. Plus, I added on an oil change for only $15. These guys are fan-freaking-tastic. I've been taking my vehicles to Sun Devil Auto on Elliot since 2007, when I moved to Tempe. Over the years, they have earned my trust through honest work and fair pricing. When I've been given a quote for a large repair, I've always researched the estimated cost for the work and found Sun Devil to be fairly priced. Some times when I bring my car in for an oil change, they will recommend a routine maintenance service that the car could use. I'm fine with this, as it has allowed me to do the needed maintenance on my vehicle over time. The result of the maintenance is a paid off vehicle with 100k miles that runs like it was brand new. I'll continue to bring my vehicles to Sun Devil as long as this level of treatment and service continues. read more

Service is good only their communication need to be improved. They came to my house to replace my windshield without making an appointment with me first and of course I was at work. Gave them the call so they came to my work and replaced it the same day. That part I'll give them 3 stars. I've been getting phone calls from them 5 times in the past 2 weeks asking how the windshield was holding up and if I have any other cars in my household that need a new windshield replacement. The first phone call I got I thought they are doing a great job keeping up and care enough to do a follow up with customer. Not until today when I got 2 phone calls which is 5 minutes apart. I told the first lady that called to take me off the list yet they called me again asking the same question. I am annoyed and irritated. I will take my business somewhere else. I took my mercedes here for a new battery. Battery and install was over $300. Ever since, as they did not install the battery correctly with the computer, my car has codes that are false continually reoccurring that I have had cleared twice, and paid for this, now I will need to take the car to the dealership to see if they can correct this as a module is misreading due to the negligence of this battery install. read more

I brought my car in a few months ago for an oil change. The technician didn't replace the plug and had oil spray all over. They had to redo and clean car while I waited. I gave them the benefit of doubt and had car back in for transmission fluid change that they recommended. Daughter picked up car and they had done oil change instead. Had to bring car back - they said they would deduct oil change cost which they did but cost for transmission change was higher than I had been quoted earlier. $20 more than another company quoted. No deal here. Needless to say I won't be returning. read more

So - my battery was dying on my car and I knew it. It was really on its last legs and I was scared that the next time was going to be the time that my car wouldn't start, and with it being 100,000 degrees in the summer in Phoenix, I was not looking forward to that time, because my luck - I would be stuck at a gas station or somewhere strange and be sitting there. Anyway, I called around and they were able to get me in and change out my battery quickly (under an hour). Which was awesome! Fast service! Wonderful. Now, I know that batteries are relatively easy operation and I get that. But I had been to two other places the night before and neither had the type of battery I needed. In fact, Sun Devil Auto didn't have it either, and were able to courier the correct one over to the store and still have it completed very quickly. My only grievance - it was a very expensive battery. I would say between $40-50 more than what I would have expected. However, you do get a 5 year warranty on the battery, so this is pretty awesome. Especially given that we run through batteries quickly here in the desert. So, I am able to justify that extra expense with the warranty. Overall, I was impressed with the team and had a great experience here. read more

They brought me in the garage and literally pointed out what i paid for and what i should have paid for and how much. They pointed out the horrible "repair" job that meineke did and let me know that the job i paid $700 for was actually no more than $120! Sun Devil Auto fixed my real problem and let me know what needed to be done and what can wait. The job was fast and true. So disappointed with this place. Called ahead for my wife and asked if she would be able to use the 19.95 oil change coupon listed on their website and if I could make an appointment. The man said to come in whenever and said we could definitely use the coupon without even having to print it out. She gets there and is informed she cannot. Would have been great for them to ask what car was going to be serviced to accurately tell me if she could use the coupon or not instead of being told it would be double only after she arrived. 1 Star for shady bait and switch business practices. read more

The worst place I've ever done car service with. I would not recommend them to anybody. On top of poor service, they tried to hand my keys off TWICE to people they didn't know were my parents or not instead of waiting for ME the car OWNER & person who left the damn car to begin with. Had used Sun Devil before and they were fine. Then we had them replace some motor mounts, but they failed to tighten the bolts properly. Our engine fell. We took it back and they fixed it and apologized and gave us 3 free oil changes so we thought we could consider them a good repair place. That incident happened last year. A month ago, our 2001 Toyota Rav4 which we are the original owners of and have taken excellent care of since we purchased it had a slight slippage as the car went into 2nd gear. So, everything else has run like a clock and we took it in right away. Well, they said they were behind, and it would be 2 or 3 weeks before we could get it looked at. We unfortunately left it with them and after they finally decided it needed a rebuild, we also had to wait for parts. I know our economy is in the toilet right now, so I understood. However, when they finally said it was finished, I expected my car to run like before and it does not! I would say do not leave or allow them to rebuild your transmission!! It so far is a nightmare for us who are living on a fixed income and my husband is a Vietnam Veteran who is partially disabled and waiting for VA COMPENSATION. We went to the one in Mesa on McKellips and Power and Danny at the cashier desk tried to say they fixed the transmission and since our car is so old that was the problem! This totally pissed me off because our car has always run great! When we tried to drive the car off their parking lot it squealed like a stuck pig and could hardly drive backwards, then as we tried to drive forward there was mor squealing and we could barely turn the steering wheel and it felt like it was an effort to go forward or backward. My husband almost hit a parked car trying to turn it back into the parking space and there was a constant squealing! this is the vehicle they said was ready for pick up! And tried to blame these results on our mileage! They are saying they will look at it and try to fix it but implied that they did what it needed, and the rest is the age of the car! I will keep everyone posted and see what they end up doing. We cannot afford to let them ruin our only mode of transportation and will fight to the end to make sure we are not ripped off. In the meantime DO NOT LEAVE OR TAKE YOUR VEHICLE TO SUNDEVIL AUTO IN MESA! read more

This place is seriously the best! I've taken my cars there for years for oil changes, brakes, and other repairs. Today we had an odd situation where my wife dropped her wedding band and it slipped into a little crack in the center console. The Nissan dealership told us it would cost around $200 to take everything out to retrieve it and wait a week for the appointment availability. We called SunDevil Auto and they told us to drive over right away and they'd check it out for us. They were able to locate and retrieve it in about 5 minutes with no charge. This place charged double what they quoted and then got snippy when questioned. That's the worst combination of bad service traits possible. Fixed things that were not causes, but symptoms, of my problem. No progress was achieved, I dropped close to 800 for a starter and battery, which both had to be replaced again. They really shouldn't work on German cars as they seemed to be at a loss. Or any cars, as far as I'm concerned. read more

They suck at working on Japanese cars as well, they FAILED miserably at making some basic repairs on an old '93 Honda Accord I had several years back, and after going back to them four times they STILL couldn't get it right. These guys bait and switch. I brought my car in for an oil change with a coupon printed from their website. When I came to pick up the car they charged me 50% more claiming that the oil my car used (5W30) was not part of the special offer. Baloney! If that were true, they would've mentioned it when I dropped off the car and gave them the coupon. The fact is they just didn't want to honor their coupon. The coupon was just to get customers in the door. This place RIPS YOU OFF. Stay away. read more
