BE AWARE OF THE TIME YOU COME IN TO EAT HERE!!! My husband and I came in at 3:09 to eat after a doctor's appt. Upon arrival, we asked how much it cost right now and the lady behind the register said, "$16.49 and $2.99 more for a drink." We finished eating at 4:11pm. When we received our bill, the total was just under $54. We questioned it as we were only anticipating for it to be upwards of $33. The lady behind the register said, "We charged you dinner price because you ate the dinner." My husband told them we arrived during lunch and we can't help it if they swapped out some of the lunch trays for dinner items. She said "Yes but you ate the dinner food." ??? My husband was very patient and said that this wasn't fair and we weren't about to pay the dinner price when we got here during lunch. And again he reiterated that if they are going to put the food out, they should expect that people are going to eat it, regardless of what time they come in. They are so focused on charging the higher price because it also happened to the elderly couple behind us! Although we don't have an issue paying the higher price, we just felt it wasn't fair and this is definitely unfair practice as a business to do. Especially the way it was handled. To the owners and staff at Sunrise Buffet: COMMUNICATE with people the correct price! If you are starting dinner soon, inform your customers they will be charged the dinner price. This is a good spot for a buffet. Fairly priced and decent to good food. Nothing I ate was bad. The variety was good for the price, that is definitely worth it! I've always liked Sunrise Buffet. Been eating here on and off since around 1999. Food is pretty good and the price is great for the value. Based on the amount of times I have been here, there's a plethora of food but not so much in the sense of *food choices*. The food tastes alright; I have my personal faves. However, I'm not very partial to the dessert options as they are often very mid-tier to pretty much inedible, the only good dessert option being the soft serve ice cream, and that's just me being generous. They have a nice selection of sashimi and sushi, but it really is not top tier. They have decent green tea, but that's your only option if you wanted tea. The mussels I had this month were a bit too chewy/rubbery and probably were overcooked, which was something I don't recall ever having before, and they seem to strangely change some of their food item options, like I never saw chicken skewers this month in comparison to last month. Last time I was there with my family and a friend, which was five days ago, my nan tried to ask for milk for her tea, but every single time she asked for milk, the waiter just kept giving us pots of green tea after accepting her request instead of just flat out telling her that they don't serve milk or that they don't have any milk. Flagging down a waiter/waitress is next to impossible, even with the restaurant being extremely quiet. It's kind of like they don't really notice us being there the entire time. The experience was too similar to last month's experience. The service we had this year was *very* similar to the previous years we went there: getting seated was a lot faster than finding *any* waiter to help our table. However, during the tail end of the pandemic, which was around 2021, they had a sign at the front door that asked their customers to leave them a 5-star review for a favourable discount (I believe it was 10%, which if that's the case, then it's pretty unforgiving), which is honestly cringe, considering no business I ever stepped into has ever done that, and it's unethical by anyone's standards. Now it seems to no longer be there, but I would not be surprised if they were just coping really hard over the bad reviews they may have gotten around that time and beforehand. Otherwise, pricing isn't too terrible, but I doubt that dinner prices are actually that good. read more

The angel hair noodles were awesome, the buffet included a very nice sushi bar. I think it was $20.99 for lunch buffet with soda after tax before tip. Great value in 2024. They serve Pepsi products. Servers were polite and attentive. I will definitely be back. read more

Haven't eaten here in years because it was so bad. Don't get me wrong, when Sunrise first opened, the food was amazing! Everything was fresh and delicious. But after management change, it started going down hill. It got to the point, the food was so bad, no one I knew ate there anymore. Skip forward to today. My brother said his co worker goes here and said the food is much better than before. I took his word and went for dinner. Price was $25. I expected seafood or something but got something hahaha. There was no snow crab, just some tiny blue crab looking crabs and baby crawfish. The quality of food was below average. Taste was ok. Worst thing I ate was the roasted beef. It tasted and looked like it was from a can. It was also cooked to hell. Mind you, they just brought it out. I couldn't finish the piece that I got. The 2 stars is for the busser, he came by offer to clear plates and always said you are welcome after I thanked him. TL;DR--Put on your fastest running shoes and run away. I usually don't bother, but this place is so bad that I need to warn others. The 5 star reviews that I see here are not believable. We obviously visited different places or they're just family/friends. Taste: Is the food edible? Yes--some. About half the food had been sitting there all day and you can see it and taste it in the texture. I couldn't stomach testing out about 30% of the food because it doesn't pass the eye test. Sushi bar? You get better quality sushi from a 7-Eleven. Selection: Abysmal. For a $21 dinner buffet, the selection is worth an $11 dollar price tag--assuming the food isn't old. Service: They're fine. Conclusion: I'm not under any illusion; I understand this is another Chinese buffet restaurant and I rate it as such. Based on the price you pay and the food you get, avoid this place. In these types of buffets, I can usually find at least one item that I can hang my hat on--something that I'll use to fill up my belly and try to get some money's worth. For the first time, this place didn't have a single item that I can slightly enjoy. There is a handful of Chinese buffets that charge $21 and can make it worth it. I'm usually against going to buffet places because they often serve terrible food. But Sunrise buffet was delicious!! The steamed fish was fresh and delicious. Hot and spicy soup super good and not greasy at all. They even have a sushi section!! They even have a good dessert section and ice cream..... I "WAS" going to try their ice cream except the grandpa person in front of me didn't wear a mask, took forever and then started coughing like crazy before he walked off , so I decided to walk away from the ice cream. Our waitress was super nice. We didn't get her name, but we left her a super good tip that you can totally tell she was soo happy. The only bad thing is they put out signs by the food reminding customers to wear mask yet some people still not wearing a mask and they didn't say anything to those customers. read more

Today, 12/16/2023, we were in the area and wanted to try a buffet and I thought about this place because it used to be so good. I was sadly mistaken, everything was cold and had no flavor. Was in the area this Saturday and tried its lunch. I gave it 5 stars because it's a homey place, with fresh food coming out frequently, and the best, it was not salty and with the right amount of oil. Nothing fancy, but pretty well made. For about $16, I have an array of dishes to choose from. If I go to a restaurant, one bowl of pho or ramen will cost about the same amount, n I can only eat that one dish. Came for sushi only but tried a few small bites of 4-5 Chinese dishes. Some observations: Staff tries hard to bus tables, keep the food recycling and warm and well-stocked. They check very frequently. Sushi is fine, probably about the lines of Natsumi - no better or worse - but nigiri didn't include salmon, so that was disappointing. Tuna was fine, though, and they had tilapia and saba (gross!), egg, and crab stick nigiri. They had 2-3 versions of CA rolls and spicy tuna roll and some fried options - just enough to build a few plates to get your money's worth. Rice recipe was good, rice was fresh and texture was right. Fish was fresh and they were cutting tilapia for nigiri while I was there. The hot dishes were hot, fresh and full but I did get in there at 11:15. There were plenty of staff members trying to ensure things were going well. Two things will prevent me from returning: - multiple staff members were not wearing masks including a cook who came out to check inventory on the buffet line - VERY disappointing - sushi variety isn't good enough I'd come back for Chinese as I liked the chicken samples I took out of 4-5 dishes. Overall ok but at $16.99 Dinner is pale in comparison to Great Plaza Buffet's fresh Mongolian BBQ for just $15.99. The string beans, shrimp are consistently soggy and while you pay more for dinner to get the grab legs, they barely put 20 out at a time about every 45 minutes. I literally stood there for 20 min and no refill. I thought it may have just been a busy kitchen night but this seems to be routine and happened the last three times I visited. It's conveniently located on Convoy which is the draw however, I'm probably going to skip this place moving forward. Plaza Buffet on Garnet is much better, has huge desert and sushi options, chocolate fountain, great fresh string beans, plenty of crab legs and the made to order stir fry. In addition, the service is bad (asian Buffet so I'm not holding my breath but it's seriously BAD) and staff has gotten into loud arguments with each other in the food area. This place was my go to many years ago, never had a chance to return since the pandemic and also because my Uncle decided to go to a different buffet, so I had stopped coming for a while, sometimes in the past I heard the food quality was going down and I wasn't sure about it. Usually I would go in for dinner because they would have more food selection, but my friend asked if I could join her for lunch, and I guess more time for me to explore the options here. The setup was pretty much the same when I was here very long time before, pretty clean and neat, lunch menu included a lot of chicken and Chinese dishes, they had a sushi bar and also a salad plus dessert section, not a lot of seafood choice during lunch, but the amount of people inside while we were there actually more than any places on a Wednesday afternoon, slow traffic so they didn't bring out new batch of new food especially for seafood. But then later on, when the evening hits, they brought put some pretty basic seafood stuffs, like cajun crawfishes, fried dungeoness crab legs, some snow crab legs, salt and pepper shrimps, still basic but much better quality than Great Plaza Buffet. I missed the day when they had lobsters although the meats were tough and little tiny pieces stuck inside those big shells, also roasted duck, frog legs, and fresh sashimi, must be the weekend when they brought those out. The server was great and attentive, I was able to get 10% off my check thanks to Yelp first check-in, sadly they still charge for drinks separately, but for a price like this, it's still tolerable and edible, hope they're here to stay. read more

Buyers beware! The reason for so many 5 star reviews here is because they offer 10% off the bill if you leave them a 5 star review while dining, and show it to the staff before paying. This seems like a super shady practice to me. That said: I thought the food was very nice for buffet fare. The veggies were fresh and crispy, the offerings were varied, and they seem to have a little something for everyone. I did think everything could have been better seasoned, everything just tasted very bland,and the service was rather brusque. Would I eat here again? We found part of a stainless steel scrubber in the fried shrimp. They did not take it as a big deal and weren't even friendly about it.

Food was terrible and stale. HORRIBLE SERVICE. Rudest servers ever. Called San Diego county health department to complain and they called me back and said they went there and audited them and found several violations: Food was being stored too close to the floor and they were not maintaining certain temperatures needed for the food.
