I have always gone to Yuraku at Germantown everytime I wanted to eat sushi as I could not find any other good sushi places in DMV areas....until today!!! I travelled 1 hour 20 minutes round trip by car just to try this place and the travel was worth my time and money. The amount of sushi rice at one nigiri piece is perfect with the perfect length of the fish on the top. The seasoning of the rice is just about the right. They are located in the food court of the K Market shopping center (formerly KMart). The have an impressive menu that offers some of the expected cuts and flavors like salmon and tuna rolls but also a few unique cuts such as smoked salmon and calamari. They also have hand rolls and udon if you are looking for a little something different. They have sushi chefs working non stop to prep and cook so you only have to wait a few minutes after you place your order. Once your buzzer rings, expect a blast of flavor and freshness with every bite. The only thing that was unexpected was the price of some of the rolls and menu items. Really solid sushi spot in KMarket food court. I've been here twice and have ordered the sushi + sashimi combo both times. Don't come here expecting cheap sushi, but come here expecting quality, fresh fish. The sushi + sashimi combo comes beautifully plated ob a wooden slab. Looks like it should be a much more expensive $60 plate. First time, the sashimi selection was salmon, tuna, octopus, squid and yellowtail. The second time the selection was salmon, tuna, yellowtail, and some kind of white fish. Just okay. Maybe it's because I have a heighten sense of smell or maybe it's because I've had sushi in japan, but this place is just okay. The quality of fish isn't great. Some of the nigiri had a lingering sense of fishy-ness. Normally I don't use soy sauce with my sushi but was sadly disappointed when I went to go look for some in the bag and there was none there. I was hoping to use some to mask the lingering aftertaste. That being said, given the price we paid, it was a decent amount of food. If I wasn't so sensitive to smells, I would probably go back but personally I would rather spend more money for less food and higher quality ingredients. We also got gyoza. The filling was mush and it wasn't really gyoza... more like deep fried dumplings. The highlight for me was the salad and the miso soup. If you're looking for high quality nigiri, don't recommend. If you're looking for a decently price maki spot, I would give it a shot. But don't get the gyoza if you're looking for real gyoza. I met both owners, who took the time to ask me what I liked, and talked me through various recommendations on the menu. While I waited for my rolls, one of them crafted a beautiful sushi bouquet with crab, avocado, and shrimp tempura (what I had relayed as my favorites) and gave it to me to snack on. They also insisted on giving me a free bottle of water. Flash-forward to home, when I got to taste my carry-out sushi. These rolls were HUGE and delicious - and SO fresh. The two shrimp tempura rolls were so pretty and artfully crafted, and tasted excellent. (My only reservation was that some of the shrimp didn't appear to be deveined - just a personal preference for me.) This is not a mall food court--it feels much more upscale but with still a pretty good of variety of sweet and savory fare. I went with the sushi bento box to-go and was a bit taken aback by the price but when cravings kick in, you follow your heart... or stomach. It didn't take too long to get my food and when I saw my to-go bag I was alarmed by how much food there was. The bento came with the usual fare of miso soup and salad--both very nice. One container had the sushi and the other had the tempura and other goodies. The tempura and rice were delicious--everything was still crispy by the time I got home. It was light and not at all greasy and there was a good variety and quantity of veggies and shrimp. The sushi box was delicious with a variety of rolls and nigiri. It all tasted amazing. My one complaint, and something I thought I'd never say, it was too much food for one person. SUNY sushi has an amazingly wide range of rolls and hand rolls, also vegetarian rolls (I can't remember if they have vegan options?) Everything I had was so fresh and so good. It felt like crazy amount of food (although they threw in some handrolls because I was ordering right before they closed). The stand out for me was the mango salmon that had super fresh, juicy layer of mango covering the roll and another one with avocado and shrimp tempura. I have ordered from suny sushi online many times before and have ate in person at least three times before as well. Usually their sushi is very good and fresh and the prices are unbeatable. However I ordered sushi tonight for dinner and I don't know if it's because they were an hour and a half away from closing or what but the quality was opposite of what I expected. Sushi is pricy no matter what and customers expect to have food that is fresh and good even if the restaurant is an hour and a half away from closing. I have attached pictures of my tuna roll and you can see the tuna is grey and this is not from soy sauce. The tuna usually melts in your mouth but this was so firm and chewy and had a strong fish smell that isn't appetizing (unnaturally strong fish smell).
