I'm visiting this area and fell in love with this store. First of all you can tell from the street that it is happy and full of life. Clean and very well organized. It is a small version of a natural foods store or a Trader Joe's with a beautiful meat department, deli and precooked meals. If you asked a local where to shop, they would send you to the local market. There is nothing outstanding about the local market but, it is a good place to get some staples. It's hard to tell the difference in prices here. I guess it just depends what you purchase. Surf market is more of a gourmet store to put it nicely. If you like diet sodas or any specialty junky drinks bring them with you. Not much available around here. I will spend my 44 days buying my groceries here. read more

Just wanted to update, Since my initial review of Surf Supermarket, I have had nothing but pleasant experiences with the quality of the products and the staff. I do LOVE going to a place where people know you by name and know their store inside and out. Great little market to grab a great meal to cook up in your sea ranch rental! :)

We stayed in Gualala for a few days in a little rental cabin with a kitchen, and we were SO happy Surf was in town! So many vegan options! Tons of organic products and the organic produce selection was pretty decent. Huge selection of wine and liquor too. It was like a mini Berkeley Bowl! Loved the small town, friendly atmosphere. Prices were a little high, but we didn't even care. We were just thrilled to have such a fantastic little market and tons of vegan food to eat! read more

one wouldn't expect a grocery store in a small town to be this good... well, at least i didn't. there is a wonderful selection of wine, cheese, pate and other "wine foods". the grocery certainly caters to the out-of-towner coming in to enjoy the finer delicacies in life. Incredibly good barbecue made by the owner himself during summer after memorial day. Awesome vegan and veggie options inside as well. Super friendly people and awesome collection of food to purchase but the bbq is the best. They also make their own sauces and dressings. read more

What a great little market Surf is! I found everything I was looking for, and a few things that I didn't really need but found me! Large selection of cheeses, wine and other picnic type goodies, as well as everything else you'd need to fully stock your kitchen pantry and fridge. I bought some massive shrimp there that I threw on the grill and they were delicious. The guy behind the fish counter was very sweet and gave me some ice to throw the shrimp on since it was a warm day and I had a few more stops to make. I found many local options which is always nice to see at a grocery store. Everyone in the store was happy, smiling and helpful. I stopped at Surf Market a few times while I stayed in Gualala for the weekend, and will be shopping there next time I'm in town! read more

For a market so isolated, this one achieves great things. Impressive selection of everything I've looked for so far, including a great produce section, a solid meat and deli counter, an amazing wine and spirits selection and well chosen groceries. Prices are reasonable given the location, and Redwood Credit Union (my bank) has an ATM in the store! Who could ask for more? read more

We used to come to Sea Ranch with the back of our car all loaded up with bags full of food. But because I freakin' love this grocery store, we now make the drive up with a lot more room in the back, just so we can load up when we get here. Price effective? No, but it's worth it to peruse the aisles of organic, quirky products. Lots of vegetarian options. Very good selection of cheese and gourmet products. Good deli. Many desserts, which I appreciate, seeing as I always celebrate my birthday here. And on the weekends, the BBQ out front is a must-try. read more

Such a great little market! Killer selection of freshly-caught fish and locally-sourced meat and their deli gals make great sandwiches to take to the beach and they make them with a smile. Actually everyone that we met in the 3 or 4 times we went to this market were pretty friendly and helpful. Their prices on their wonderful organic produce were a bit high, but they are up there in the middle of nowhere-coast. Good beer and wine selection, too. This place would get a 4 in San Francisco, and that says alot. A great selection of goods, produce, wines and liquor with an incredible butcher counter. The BBQ outside is pretty good, not great. This is the place to stock up when you're staying in the area. read more

Yes, it's not perfect and the prices are a little high. But, given that they are hours away from any sizable town and are located in one of the most beautiful areas in thw world (where I am currently vacationing), I have no complaints. They even had hominy in their inventory, allowing me to make a delicious Mexican chicken soup. They have everything you need to cook up a simple or a gourmet meal and to satisfy the kids with snacks. This is a great local business! It has a vast array of fine foods and reminds me of a mini-Harvest Market or a really Mini-Whole Foods. Organic, Chic and still has the pantry staples everyone expects...the meat counter is manned (and I do mean "manned") by some awesome guys that will do anything you need them to do when it comes to getting you what you want and everyone in the store is very helpful and very polite. Love all the in-store displays and little gifts and food items flirting with me everywhere. Great job Surf! You get my vote for best little store on the coast! read more

Amazing market. All kinds of interesting unusual organic items along with the old standards. Wasn't that pleased with the meat we bought. Pork chop stuffed with chicken apple sausage was dry and tasteless. Not much selection for fresh fish. But great fresh cheesecake. Yum! read more

We've frequented Surf Super for many years and agree with all the comments about how unexpectedly great it is for a small town. Comparable, we'd say, to some Bay Area stores where we used to reside. Now, with the expanded meat and seafood section, it's become even more unique. One of our favorite products you should be aware of is among the outstanding dessert cakes in the display case as you enter the store. We're talking about the Tuxedo Cake; numerous layers of moist cake with vanilla and chocolate truffle mousse in between. This is definitely the most decadent of the various cakes you'll find. My wife and I agree that it's every bit as good as what you'd get in a restaurant and comes in individual squares big enough for 2 good appetites. You may be tempted by several other choices found in the same location, but trust us that this is even better. read more

Staying at a rental in Sea Ranch and had to grab some food for the frig. Great selection of items. Reminded me of a Bay Area store. Extra mention to their Meat Department - had no ideas on what to cook, but we knew we wanted a night of seafood and another night of red meat. The big butcher guy (yellow glasses) had some awesome ideas, gave us recipes, and told also told us some spots to check out on our visit up. Seafood was fresh. Beef was awesome and tender. Great spot for a small little town. Was surprised actually. Has just enough and then some for you to get by and not have to pre shop for a vacation. Lots of products you would find at Whole Foods or other health food stores as well. Sort of a balance between your traditional dive grocery store and a health food store. The people that give this place low rating and complain about prices deserve the crap low quality food t the store across the street so hopefully the management will completely disregard those comments if they even bother to read yelp in the first place. read more

One thing I dislike is to watch someone struggle to be nice to a person of color. Kate, you suck. You look at folks (especially of color) with plastic looks and distasteful attitude. Your store is not all that great and just because the elite may shop there doesn't mean you're that wonderful. You're not. The only folks I like in this store were the deli folks and one cashier all of color. The others just snubbed you and that is such a discomforting feeling and makes you look like judgmental, critical people. WHO THE HECK LIKES THAT? Thank GOD for the Gualala Market directly across the street from this place. This is a down home kind of store and the only place I will shop when in the area. Everyone treats you like the human you are, there. So, Surf Market, you've made yourselves very clear on who you like to service. Stumbled upon this place while we were on a road trip to Mendocino and were looking for a lunch spot. There are a few restaurants we considered, but then we see barbecues set up with baby back ribs, tri tip in this parking lot and decided to take a chance and pull in. After shopping for some basic snacks and fruit for the car we went back outside and ordered. BEST DECISION OF OUR ROAD TRIP. That tri tip sandwich was the best fricking tri-tip we've ever tasted. The flavor was mind blowing. If you are ever passing through this town you and see this -- stop and get yourself ribs or tri tip. You'll love it. This stop really made our day. What a discovery!!! (They do this Friday and Saturday starting at 11 until they run out - not on Sunday) read more

There isn't a lot in this area, so it's nice to have a market with a wide range of quality products. It's a really expensive market, but good spot to pick up local food for souvenirs. The tuna sandwich is good - not too much mayo, very fresh. The fried chicken is excellent - flavorful, but not too salty. read more

Stopped here to pick up a quick bite to eat while on a drive up the coast. Cute little market, loved the personalization of the signs and decor around the store. We saw the deli sign and decided to grab a made to order sandwich- the Dutch crunch bread was delicious! The clerk at the deli counter was very friendly, helpful and quick. However, when we went to check out, the checker/manager who checked us out didn't greet, or even acknowledge us. She was too busy having a conversation with another store employee and only gave us a monotone 'Thank you' as she handed us a receipt and looked in the direction of the employee she was speaking to. It was just somewhat surprising to encounter this type of behavior, especially from someone that's supposed to be a manager. read more

not too many choices of eats or things to do in gualala or anchor bay, where we were staying. this supermarket was like an oasis, it had everything you could want. all the staples, all the produce, all the salad bar and made-to-order sandwiches (didn't try), all the organic/gourmet/hip products, all the wine. impressive and reasonably priced. read more

While visiting over the weekend, I was pleasantly suprised that such a small town had such a fantastic supermarket. We had forgot to pack a few items and were very happy to find this store.
