This gem along the southern Mendocino coast is SPECIAL for so many reasons. THE FOOD: You can literally find everything you might want here, but it's curated which I like because so many grocery stores offer 2+ options of every product that are essentially the same, only different packaging and prices which leads to consumer fatigue pretty quickly. They've done the hard part for you, offering only the really good stuff worth your $. I love their cheese selection, yummy grab-and-go snacks and desserts (don't pass up the rocky road bites, made by Trink's just up the road -- everything from there is also 100), and they have lots of options in their deli, too. You also need to check out all the cool Surf Market sauces, dressings, and condiments like bacon onion jam. They also have a crazy good selection of chocolates, and tons of gluten free and other special diet foods. Check out their local Thanksgiving brand coffee, too. Annnnd amazing BBQ most Fridays and Saturdays served outside in the parking lot. THE WINE/BEER: Again, curated so you're only seeing great picks, and many are locally made. Good choices for every price point, too. THE ENERGY: It's a chill local vibe that is both clearly a neighborhood gathering place but also very welcoming to tourists. THE ORGANIZATION: The store is very well organized, yet open especially for a small grocery store. It's also very CLEAN. Of course now everyone wears masks, and hand sanitizer is there for you at the entrance. But they clearly care about maintaining high standards and keeping customers safe beyond that, too. THE PEOPLE: Again, friendly and chill. They clearly love where they work and deal with us tourists and passing-through crew without an eye roll (even though sometimes that would be warranted). This is my go to market when I am in the area. There is always plenty of parking and more often than not, they have the BBQ going out in front. The tri-tip is drool-worthy, if you get the chance. Just inside the door, they have a great selection of (mostly local) breads, cheeses, mustards, and deli-items like potato salad, deviled eggs, etc. Even if I am just running in for one thing, I find myself stopping to stare open-mouthed into the goodies. Their produce is usually good quality but prepare to pay an arm and a leg. They have a decent selection of beer, and the prices aren't too bad. They also have an interesting selection of hard liquor and wine, but it is pretty pricey. Their butcher counter is a thing of beauty, and their deli sandwiches are perfect for taking to the beach or in the car for the drive home. Surf is more of a gourmet style and organic choices of food items. We were able to pick up top sirloin ground meat and really good blue cheese for our George Foreman burgers; great tortilla chips, fresh and super delicious salsa and fantastic cheese curds that we used to make my guy's version of rancheros!! Their mostly organic veggie section was also wonderful for making a good plate of stir-fry. They also have a good selection of ice-cream and milk for us to make milkshakes! Yum! They also have some import beer such as Sapporo. I like the shop's local, friendly, fast but courteous service. It was our first night at The Sea Ranch and we needed some food to fill the home rental's fridge for the next few days. Hubs and I definitely picked up some good quality food--spending about $300 for food and wine combined. The prices overall range from moderate to pricey, all depending on what your are purchasing. Hint: Wine/Spirits are not cheap here...but it is at the market across the street ;-) Service at the deli was good, and the lady that rang us up at the check out stand was friendly. We appreciate good coffee, cute little delis with organic and local food products, gourmet ice cream, etc. The Surf Market can easily check all of this off the list - they have it in spades. All of this can ush be found in the small towns we visit on the coast, so it's to be expected that we would be fairly happy at this well stocked and run store. Our second time at the Surf Market was last weekend and we were stoked with our sesh again, so I felt compelled to pen a review. For me, this is what makes it special: the unique and unexpected gifts creatively presented throughout the entire store to enhance my shopping experience and tempt me as I perused gourmet crackers and jams, chocolates and teas. I dig shopping. Not into grocery shopping, I'm referring to shopping shopping. Like drop a bundle when the product is worth it. So I won't complain about price at the Surf Market as others have. I think this is one of the two supermarkets in Gualala. Came here to pick up snacks and food for our picnic on the beach. They've got a wonderful selection of cheese and chips. Great potato salad, not too much variety on the fresh bread though. They've got good teas and also a good selection of salami. Their frozen mini cheesecakes are delicious! We bought them each night for dessert. The plain and raspberry ones are the ones I've tried and they are amazing. It's large and clean and workers are friendly. Everything is a bit pricier here but it's probably because the cost to get stuff here is higher. This is our go to grocery store when we are vacationing in Gualala. read more

This supermarket has it all, a very nice atmosphere, good product selection, an amazing deli department, really tidy and nice isles. Management does care for this business and it translates into a great shopping experience. They heavily support local vendors and did I said that the food is delicious?. Stop by the deli and order the Stevewich or have a Cuban panini, if you have a chance try the "Salsa Verde". This store has a great selection of products and the staff is friendly, welcoming and they know their stuff. This coastal market in Gualala has a great selection of organica and gluten free, eco-friendly goods. What drew us in last night was the bbq outside which the seem to do every weekend if not more often. We were trying to decide where to go for dinner, neither of us felt much like cooking, when we saw the big grill tent in the parking lot. We took home a beautifully cooked tri-tip. I came in for a coffee and to double check on a special order I had requested weeks prior, While making my Peet's Coffee Jacob asked if I had tried the new milk that's out for us "Non - Dairy , Non-Soy" customers . He told me about the new oatmeal milk ! I needed a non nut milk and am so grateful for Jacob introducing it to me in advance of me who knows when learning of it ! Life changer ! The deli staff was very unfriendly and lacked even a modicum of customer service. River was especially rude. When I tried to order a hot deli sandwich I was told they were too busy to make a sandwich that had to be heated up despite the fact that it's an offering on their sandwich menu. Instead, they could've explained that it would take a little longer to make a heated sandwich and given me the option to wait or choose something else. People who can't treat customers right shouldn't be interacting with the public. read more

Your grocery options are quite limited once you pass Bodega Bay on Hwy 1, so once you get up to Sea Ranch and Gualala you can only hope there are a few options outside of gas station convenience marts, and luckily there is. You could plop Surf Market in Marin, SF, Venice Beach, wherever and it would fit fight in. Tons of organic and local options, great produce, very good seafood and amazing deli. If we're doing a beach day while in town, we hit Surf Market often for some deli sandwiches and sides. Very strong wine collection of Sonoma and Mendo counties and fantastic craft beer selection. Is it pricey, yes, but it's not over the top of anywhere else you'd find in the bay area in terms of specialty markets. The staff is always friendly, and they're knowledgeable on the wines too. If they don't have something, you can hit the Gualala Supermarket. In fact, they have limited baby stuff like diapers, okay selection of food, and they kindly pointed me in the direction of the other market. Don't feel like you have to overpack the cooler before heading out to the coast, cuz you can get everything you need and more here. read more

As a local, we go to Gualala Super. I tried Surf Market at first, but was taken back by groceries averaging over $50 / bag. There's a different vibe at Surf Market as compared with Gualala Super. Really a great supermarket in the middle of nowhere. Well, Gualala isn't nowhere, but it is a small town. This is the better ( I think) of the two grocery stores in the town. It's small and tight on space, but they manage to pack more than the basics in here. Full service Deli, Fish, Meat counters. Lots of vegetarian/vegan offerings. Gourmet food. They also ran daily barbecues in front when we were there with such offerings as tri-tip and barbecued oysters! We couldn't resist the oysters. It is a bit pricey, but good quality stuff. read more

We loved Surf Market! First of all, we arrived in town after driving from Sonoma to find that there were no bathrooms in Gualala except at this market. Gas stations and the other market all said, no restrooms. Thank you Surf! Therefore we bought all our groceries for our 3 night stay here. They were friendly, helpful, and the selections were good. We grilled their homemade sausages one night and they were amazing! They also had a great bread selection. We also enjoyed their Surf Sauces. We went back 2 more times to order sandwiches from the deli (we ordered online and picked up.... and also bought more groceries) The sandwiches were great. Great little store with quite a few quality items. When you walk in, you'll see a fair selection on picnic items-- cheese and charcuterie along with some desserts made from Trinks (their local bakery). Straight ahead they have a fairly decent alcohol selection for a small market with wine and your typical and not so typical spirits. They have a selection of local and non-local chocolates and your typical s'mores items along with firewood and kindling. They have a sandwich and already made food selection. We have not tried anything in this area. Their produce selection is modest- but what would you expect for a market that's remote and probably doesn't get much foot traffic for produce. Their meat dept has some good grass fed and organic selections along with fresh fish (if they have some in stock). On Saturdays they offer an outdoor BBQ selection of ribs, tri-tip, chicken, sandwiches. We've had the chance to enjoy their ribs on a couple of occasions. There's usually a crowd and a little wait, but you can tell they're proud of what they do. They're ribs are good. Not the best ever tasted, but solid. read more

Once I saw the BLT with 24 slices of bacon on the menu, the decision was over. Yes, you read the last sentence correct: Twenty Four. Slices. Of bacon. A heart attack between two slices of sourdough bread! Keep in mind the bacon is very thin and crispy, so it becomes a bit of a crumbly mess when eating in the car. But the mess is more than worth it, as I've never had a sando quite like this before. A special Sonoma coast treat. Surf Market is cute and has everything a traveler would need when stopping for a bite or groceries over a few days. Quite a few gourmet and locally-sourced options when browsing the aisles. But if you are simply craving a big bag of nacho cheese Doritos, they have that too. Probably your best option for food stuffs in a 40-50 mile radius, so get these groceries while you can! read more

Sea Ranch is pretty, but it's a little slow. Go for the views, stay for the pork. There is a dude in the Surf Supermarket parking lot that is the "Rain Man" of BBQ. A grilled meat savant. I had the tri-tip sandwich one day... good crusty roll, perfectly cooked tri-tip and it wasn't drowning in sauce. In fact, the sauce (a mix of BBQ, SoyVey Teriaki, grilled onions and Sweet Sweet Love) was good, but just a small part of the taste explosion. $8 and totally worth it. I went back the next day and had the ribs. Rainman starts the grill at 7am and has ribs ready by 11. Again, it's not about the sauce and there are no fancy side dishes or fries to distract you... just skillful cooking of delicious pork. If the tri-tip sandwich is comparable to having sex with a hot 20 something... then the ribs are comparable to sex with (3) 30-somethings. A gangbang of flavors!. (trademarked) $20 for a full rack. After a long, boring and tedious drive up from San Francisco, I was eager to arrive to Surf Supermarket located in "downtown" Gualala. Surf Super its the first supermarket you hit once you leave Petaluma 2 1/2 hours back, so pretty much anything with decent food would have been a welcome to me by that point. I am giving 5 stars to their awesome deli sandwiches!!! Better than any other deli sandwich I've had from a supermarket. All super fresh ingredients-ripe tomatoes, bright green lettuce (NOT iceberg, either) juicy ass turkey that they DIDN'T skimp on, and soft as hell wheat bread. Oh, and musnt forget the buttery avocado, either. These fresh (and local, I suspect) ingredients all combined together to create a great sandwich that I needed after my 3 hour drive up to the middle of nowhere. Toads go to this supermarket and avoid the other one across the street in the strip mall...or should I say row of 4 shops. Cant wait to get one on the way back to the city tomorrow morning! Yee-haw! You know when a place caters to the San Francisco weekender crowd when the first thing you see upon walking in is the wine section. -- and it takes up a whole isle. My only real complaint with this place is the ready-made stuff in the Deli. I do seasonal research in the area and relied on it for food for a while last year. Delicious, but greasy as all hell. I joked about it with the girl who made it, and she was like "blame it on the purple dye in my hair". She laughed. I laughed. I swallowed really hard. I thought I heard that causes brain damage, but oh well... Otherwise this place is run-of-the-mill for a small supermarket. The main reason I love this place: it's a microcosm of the town: 1/3 people from the City, 1/3 crusty fisherman-type dudes, 1/3 really really old retirees (so old, that the registers have notices that say "STOP!! use the stylus to punch in your debit code! not a real pen!" and there are scratches all over it from old people using normal pens.) read more

My family and I are lucky enough to get invited once or twice a year to join up with friends to enjoy each other's company and the Northern California coastal lifestyle at Sea Ranch just south of Gualala. The coastline is rugged; the air think and heavy with fog and saltwater. You get the idea. We do a lot of cooking when we're there, and it's super nice to be able to count on this place for a reliable selection of good quality and fresh groceries. This smallish store pretty much has what you're looking for, and increasingly things have gotten higher-end and more organic and the like. You're not price-comparing here. I love this place for the organic and local spread, but the customer service at the checkout counters leaves something to be desired. My family owns a house in Gualala, that is not a rental, and we are up there almost every weekend so I kind of think that makes us locals, but the ladies behind the check-stand treat us like we are just another tourist. Everyone else there is great. The deli area is awesome. Cook your own breakfast while you are up there, and make sure that you get a big hunk of their thick slice bacon. If you are a vegetarian...you will change your mind. If you refuse to eat the bacon, then make sure you grab some of the fresh hash brown potatoes. ...for some strange reason that biggest section in the store is the alcohol section. This place is a wow. Quality of food and selection almost made my jaw drop. I thought to myself, this place is so organic I feel healthier just walking around in here. Everything is fancy shmancy organic. Truly need to be a rich dude to shop extensively here. Yet if you've got deep enough pockets, this place is wonderful: choice meats, cheese, fresh-from-the-cows milk, and fruits that look like someone spray painted them. This place is a bit on the pricy side, but they have everything you'd need and could find at a Whole Foods or high-end marketplace in an urban area - much for the Bay Area, but also locally sourced items like bread. They have a deli, and serve Peet's coffee. On weekends, you can smell your way here as they bbq tri-trip and ribs outside, which you can take to go. We found ourselves there over Art in the Redwoods weekend, and they happened to have an artisan food fair, with food samples throughout the store - yum! read more

As a frequent customer I have to say this store has the Market on helpful , friendly staff. You get the feeling from every department you visit that the staff seem genuinely happy and enjoying their job. The produce department is more than willing to cut open any fruit for you to try , choose the freshest herbs for you or run to the front when you realize you now need a cart ! I feel they make a real effort to accommodate special diets and cater to the organic healthy choices we all desire. Ah, Surf Supermarket in Gualala just 5 miles North. Awesome selection of wines, plenty of produce, lots of vegan/vegetarian stuff in the deli & frozen section. Oh! Oh! and the CARROT CAKE!
