I heard good things about this place. I may have made a bad choice in sandwiches, I got the meatball which was not that tasty, the meatballs were dense but not too full of flavor. Had a great lunch at this quirky little spot! There are two entrances here and the kitchen is nestled between the front lobby and dining area. The indoor dining area was a little dim for us so we enjoyed our sandwiches out on the outdoor patio. We ordered the #11 (Just the Tip) and #2 (USS Midway. I had the USS Midway and the meat was so tender! It paired well with the crunch of the toasted baguette. Pickles and banana peppers are given on the side to place in your sandwich as you wish. I didn't find the sandwich drowned in sauce or mayo, and the serving size was just right for me. It took about ten minutes for our sandwiches to be ready. They offer chips, bottled drinks, and some cold side options. Once you place your order at the front you're given a buzzer that alerts you when your food is ready. Service was okay, we had told her it was our first time and she didn't offer any suggestions on what to order or directions to where the dining area is. The front lobby is adjacent to the kitchen so I got a little confused trying to find the bathroom and the patio. I'd definitely stop by here again if I'm in the area and looking for a good sandwich. The health department needs to come here. My family and I ordered take out. We opened the potato salad to find a HAIR inside. Disgusting. We called. They offered a full refund. The owner calls, leaves us a message stating "sometimes this happens", he didn't seem to care, apparently hair is normal in their food at this establishment; I'm sorry, hair in food does not sometimes happen. Cleanliness should be your top priority always not just during covid. Hair in your food is unacceptable. Go to another place where they care about how your food is prepared. I've been coming here since Billy B took it over from Brown Bag. Loved, loved, loved when he changed it to Surfside Deli. Since he's turned it over to new ownership...not so great. Don't get the BLT #10. It was two pieces (or one layer of bacon) on the whole sandwich, a total of three tomato slices on the whole sandwich and minimal lettuce. It tasted like a grilled sandwich with bread being the main ingredient. I was about to steal my co-worker's Slighty Stoopid from him because the BLT was so terrible. Pretty disappointed. read more

Trust me when I say just park wherever and walk to Surf Side Deli. Cute, "surfy", shop with a serious ocean theme going on. 3 picnic style benches outside and a variety of seating inside. The staff... wow. These guys made my girlfriend and me feel very welcomed. It was like running into friends rather than some guys working at a deli. There were 4 guys working there and they all engaged us in conversation about the food which you could tell, they were genuinely proud to serve. We chose two sandwiches to share, the mudslide which is their Italian and the tip of the something or other... their tritip sandwich. Both were excellent. No joke. I'm picky. These sandwiches were bomb. The smoked tritip was perfectly cooked. The fixings that put on them perfectly complimented the meat and the bread was just as tasty. The Italian has the usual meats and cheese and again a perfect compliment of toppings. While waiting for our sandwiches, I chatted with these guys and found out they do catering AND have pre-made dinners to go. Packed in aluminum trays with aluminum covers and the heating instructions on top. Dinner for 2 for $25.00 just take it home and heat it up! They also do poke BUT only when they can get fresh tuna from the local docks. You're not getting fresher than that. You can request lettuce and tomatoes, which is what I got as well. They have bags of chips and beverages to complement your sandwich. I was impressed with the size of the sandwich and for only $8.99? Call the police because that is a steal! The guys were all kind and we did not have to wait long to get our sandwich. Surf side deli is located in a small parking lot off Rosecrans. Parking can be a pain, but it's worth the stress. I will be back to try the other sandwiches they have to offer. I was torn between a 3 or a 4 star, but I'm giving it a 3 star. This sandwich shop is good, no doubt. It's tasty and a lot of variety sandwiches. Biggest criticism is that its pretty expensive and the size of the sandwiches are small. There are plenty of other deli's in SD that are better priced, and bigger sandwiches. Ummmm....YUM! This was my first time trying Surfside Deli, but most definitely not my last. After 12 years in San Diego, I already have my favorite sandwich shops and am so partial to them that it is tough for any new ones to come close, but Surfside has defied the odds and has taken over spot number 2 in my heart! After so much deliberation as everything looks delicious, I opted to try the #13 sandwich, Feel The Thunder: Smoked Brisket, Herb Mayo, Provolone Cheese, Onion Jam and BBQ Sauce on an Artisan Baguette. I was a bit apprehensive because more often than not, brisket is dried out and baguette's way too hard. But I am so glad that I gave it a chance because it was honestly delicious. The brisket had a bit more fat on it then I prefer, but otherwise was cooked well and very flavorful. The baguette had a nice crunch, but was still soft enough to bite into. There are many other sandwiches on the menu I'd love to try, but this was so yummy I think it will be tough to steer away from it. My boyfriend and I also purchased one of their baked chocolate chip cookies to share. It looked delicious on the pastry shelf, but again I wasn't expecting much because it was already 2:00pm and I assumed it had already been sitting there for hours. It was fantastic though! It was so soft with the perfect golden crisp on the outside; simply baked to perfection. I'm glad we opted to share so that I didn't devour an entire 500 calories myself! His boat is docked in Point Loma, so I am sure we will be making this one of our go-to spots to get food to take out sailing! read more
