    Saba (mackerel) entree
    Andrea M.

Finally got to try out Sushi Broadway. I used to come here for many years when Kamakura was here. For the non-Alamedans, and tech bro transplants, Kamakura was pretty much an institution in Alameda that was here for decades, and had a very loyal following. The owner was a sweet lady who was ever-present at the restaurant, even at a very advanced age. I think Kamakura was actually one of the first restaurants I experienced when I came to the U.S. as a child, and certainly the first time I tried Japanese food, which remains one of my very favorite cuisines. After Kamakura closed, the place sat vacant so long (thank you, ridiculous Alameda real estate prices and permitting requirements), that I was beginning to wonder if this location would ever be brought back to life again. Then, at last, a new sushi establishment called Sushi Broadway opened. I have no idea if there is any relation whatsoever to the former Kamakura. The interior has been extensively renovated; it looks brand new and still has a hint of that fresh-paint smell. On a Sunday evening, the dining room was more than half-occupied, which is a good sign. We perused the menu, and settled on the Saba Shioyaki (grilled mackerel) entree, and the Double Sake Roll to share. The saba also comes with soup and salad, so it was more than enough for a full meal for the two of us. Prices for rolls and entrees are totally reasonable, but if you want straight sashimi, it is pricier, and I've noticed sashimi has gone up in price everywhere, so certainly not limited to here. And that's ok; would you want to roll the dice with cheap raw fish? I think not. Service was very nice and hospitable. Attentive but not overbearing. We were never rushed, which I appreciate. After our meal, we received a complementary pour of plum wine, which was nice, and Kamakura used to have this tradition of hospitality as well. We will return, and I'll probably have more to add after our next visit.

Came here with friends to celebrate my birthday and free street parking was easy to find. Walked into the restaurant and it is bright, clean and cheerful! I used to go to the previous restaurant that was here, Kamakura for many years and this new restaurant is entirely different, spacious and open. We ordered tempura appetizer and we each had a bento box. I had the salmon and tuna sashimi and beef teriyaki! Delish! And the nice touch was when the servers brought us a green tea ice cream and tempura fried bananas for my birthday! What a delight.

My second time at Broadway Sushi. Love the updated decor from when it used to be Kamakura. A manageable variety of sushi rolls; appetizers and Japanese dishes to choose. The rolls are beautiful and generous. They packed up my leftovers beautifully! Loved the Ichiban roll, tempura portobello, sashimi starter and oyako don. Quality and ambience are why I love Sushi Broadway!

There is no free plum wine don't know why yelp says that. We spent over $150 for 3 people. The fish overall was mushy but at least not fishy. California rolls were very tasteless. Sashimi platter pic below should have taken it from the side, the tuna was like a little triangle. Weirdest sashimi cut we ever ran into. It's ok if you want Americanized place. First page menu has rolls mostly with fried items and spicy sauce, that should be enough to drive off the true sushi lovers. Will not return again.

Arrived around 4pm today (Saturday) and it was empty which was both great and worrisome (I hadn't checked the reviews prior so I wasn't sure about the place, it was a surprise on the spot drop in) We were seated immediately and given menus, offered water, and given some time to choose what we'd like. My husband started off with a beer and I asked for a Diet Coke. We skipped the appetizers as we just wanted something small. Quick note - this place is FREEZING. We came on a super cold day as it was and were looking forward to some slight warmth indoors but we were uncomfortable the whole meal and rushed through to get out because of how cold it was. Food : We ordered the "Bay" roll, Lion King, and Spicy Dragon Roll. As a non - sushi lover, my ratings probably won't be much appreciated. I'll include my husband (the sushi enthusiast) thoughts below. Bay roll: 6/10(I personally didn't try this one) had a harsh minty taste. Not to his liking. Lion King: 9/10 (I personally give this one a 10/10) I loved the cook on the salmon on the crab to salmon ratio was perfect. Spicy dragon roll: 10/10 his favorite, I'd give it a 6/10. A LOT of avocado if you're an avocado lover. It's both inside the roll and topped with it. The spicy sauce however, is amazing. The older gentlemen who we believe was the owner was so friendly and made the experience great (our waiter was also amazing and attentive) the owner brought us our bill at the end along with a delicious shot which was dangerously good lol. We'd love to return. Ambiance and service was amazing. I'll try a dinner plate next time and steer away from the sushi, just wanted to give it a shot today. I'll update once I try more of their menu options!

Sushi Broadway opened recently in the long vacant space where Kamakura was. Infrastructure similiar with all new decor, fixtures, seating. Greeted courteously, promptly. Ordered. Food came within 10-15 minutes. Few patrons at lunch. Offerings (Japanese): appetizers, lunch specials, nigiri, sashimi & sushi, specialties, donburri & udon, Lunch/sushi/sashimi combos, booze.. Bites: 2 item lunch combo (18) -salad: iceberg lettuce, carrot shreds, white dressing. Tasty as usual -rice not firm. Fluffy short grain the usual. Good. -miso soup tasted sweet. Sometimes it is cuz: Instant mix contains sake or some mirin 2) has higher ratio of koji, a fermentation starter. *probably lst reason. Saba shioyaki: grilled mackeral falling off the bone quality. Moist, boneless with light dipping sauce. Tonkatsu had slightly thick dipping sauce, crispy crust. Informed waitress in Cantonese meat was 2/3 ngaang6 (hard), 1/3 nen (tender). Meant to say gon1 (dry). Nice finish with orange wedge & a timble of plum wine. 4 stars: quality: not consistent, quantity: good, worthiness: ymmv.

Tofu Don (teriyaki tofu, ground pork, and eggs over rice) was super tasty

My family and I were sad when the old Kamakura shut down years ago, and thus happy again when we saw that the same location was being revitalized and brought back as Sushi Broadway. We stopped in for dinner with some out-of-town family during the Christmas holiday, and the whole experience was utterly delightful. The staff were warm and welcoming, the ambiance was pleasant, and (most importantly) the food was EXCELLENT. I neglected to get pics of everything we ordered, but my Tofu Don (teriyaki tofu with ground pork and eggs over rice) was incredibly tasty - the perfect "comfort food" for a cold rainy evening. I can't say enough about how lovely and kind the staff were. They went way beyond simply taking our order and serving our food - rather, they made us feel like family, treated us to dessert, and even sent us home with a small bottle of sake as a thank you for dining with them. This place is new and probably a bit under the radar at the moment, but it really deserves to become one of the must-try joints in Alameda. Check it out ASAP!

    Double Sake roll

First time here. Dropped in at the last minute. I never made it into the prior sushi place ocupying this space. We have driven by multiple times and tonight heading elsewhere we stopped here. Upon entering I was pleasantly surprised as to the number of diners here. It wasn't packed but it wasn't empty. Looked like it could be families from the neighborhood. I hate walking into an empty restaurant where the staff is looking at each other as its their last night. Not the case here! We were greeted and seated right away and ordered some sake as we looked over the menu. We decided on the Saba dinner and a Double Sake Roll. I'm a huge fan of Saba and it was grilled to perfection along with miso soup and green salad. The dressing on the salad had a certain tang to it and when the greens were gone I drank the left over dressing. (Don't tell my partner 'cause she'll think that's unrefined. Y'all know what I really mean) The saba was excellent and a full serving almost on it's own for the both of us. The Double Sake roll was also great and had a spicy sauce with a bot of a kick that was nice. A very extensive sake list along with more wines than I have seen at other sushi places. And of course the usual beers. Service was great and the prices resonable. We have our favorite sushi haunts in Alameda and I think this could become one of them. 4 stars for now since first time in. Totally in the running for 5 the next time here.

    Beef udon
    Kenneth T.

Beef udon was delicious. The beef was so tender and juicy, the best beef udon we have around here in Alameda. Unagi Don was ok. Some parts of the unagi was chewy instead of tender so that wasn't as good. But the parts that were tender, which was about 70%, was umami delicious. It was good and reminded me of the original restaurant at this location - Kamakura. The combination bento box of gyoza, tonkatsu and teriyaki salmon was good. The only thing that didn't taste as good was the teriyaki salmon - overly cooked and overly dressed with teriyaki sauce.

Congrats on your new second location. 2 weeks new! Quality/Quantity - Over ordered as usual, but we wanted to support. Two Item Combo Bento Box, Chicken and Salmon. Came with rice, salad, and miso soup. Passion Roll - So fresh, see pictures. Crispy Spicy Hamachi Roll - Fried well. Good flavors, etc. The only thing that would have made this better was if the hamachi was able to stay raw in the roll. Dare to dream. Atmosphere - We miss Kamakura! Closed due to a fire in 2017. But now a beautiful new location. Looks like you moved the kitchen more upfront and made it larger. The sushi bar is also larger. Still street parking, both metered and free residential parking if you are willing to walk a few blocks. Open 7 days a week from 11:30am or noon to 9pm or 9:30pm. Service - Excellent. Very welcoming. Talked with Zhi about the history of Kamakura and how their remodel differed from the previous business. And the backup waitress was also good. Price - $55 + tip. Owner Comment - Congrats to Andy Guan for your second sushi location.

Starter sashimi dinner! Came with soup and salad. Great keto option! Fish was fabulous!

Wow! Absolutely fabulous! Food was fantastic and the entire staff was super friendly and attentive! I think I have my new favorite Japanese in alameda! We shared the Glenview and it was amazing! The salmon skin chips were a super clever idea and super tasty! I always had the starter sashimi dinner. All of the fish was like butter and tasted amazing! Great keto option! I also love that they have soy paper as an option for the roles. I will be coming back here a lot!

I ate here for dinner with my family last Saturday night. We were able to make a last minute reservation over the phone for 7:30 pm. When we arrived, we were greatly warmly by the server and shown our booth. Two of us, including myself, ordered the nabeyaki which was delicious and full of ingredients. One ordered the oyakadon which was also a hearty dish. One ordered the beef teriyaki dinner which was okay -- beef could've been a bit more tender. As a little bonus, we were served complimentary plum wine in the tradition of Kamakura, the former iconic restaurant in that location. Overall, we had a very nice experience here. The food and service were very good. We liked the ambiance. The restaurant was modern, warm and inviting with a good sized sushi bar. I hope this restaurant is successful, as it doesn't get the foot traffic it would if it were on Park St. We will definitely be back.

It was a quiet Tuesday evening, and we were among the last customers there, which made for a relaxed and enjoyable experience. I'm pretty selective about finding the right balance between taste and nutrition, and this meal really hit the mark. We both ordered the bibimbap with tofu and mixed grains instead of white rice. I especially appreciated having that option--it's surprisingly rare to find anything other than white rice at authentic Korean restaurants. The variety of vegetables, both sautéed and fermented, was such a treat. There was a generous amount of food, but we ate every bite because it was so delicious! Next time, we'll ask for a takeout box at the beginning so we can pace ourselves and have leftovers for the next day. Definitely looking forward to coming back!

Came here last month with my partner's family who were visiting and wanted to try some local eats…read more Tang Jip was a good choice considering the nice location, good price, and good reviews we saw. The restaurant is very nice and spacious, with a lot of booth and table seating inside and quite a bit of outside seating with an overhang for those sunny days. This was great for us because we also had a dog with us. However, we did have a few issues prior to us ordering and getting our food. First, while our party had already arrived and talked to one of the hosts, they went back inside and didn't get us menus, plates, bowls, napkins, etc. to set up a table until about 10 minutes later when we just decided to pick one. We also asked to turn on one of the heaters near our table since it was evening and getting chilly, and it took a bit of time (our food was already coming out by this point) to get that up and running. Lastly, while those I can chock up to being minor issues at worst, there was a weird interaction regarding getting some free drinks that they advertised in a exchange for a Yelp review. When we said we already checked in online and would do a review after, they insisted we do it then and there for the deal and one of the waiters actually stood and watched us (to make sure we did it?) and that we specifically gave 5 stars before our meal, which we felt pressured to do by that point (which I ultimately deleted afterwards before doing this re-review). It's a shame that there was that offputting moment in a otherwise great meal. While the waiters told us that the set combos they advertised were specifically meant for one person, they were more than enough for 2/3 to share and getting 2 sets for our table of 5 + an appetizer had us stuffed. The SoonTofu stew was hot and hearty while the bulgogi was nicely charred and they gave a ton to eat. This + the amount of banchan, which to their credit gave us more of, was delightful. A dinner for 5 being less than $100 is a great value in these times where it's harder to justify eating out at all. Ultimately the food made up for a strange beginning and would still recommend this as a great dinner spot.

Unfortunately, the overall experience was disappointing from the very beginning. I initially emailed the restaurant regarding reservations but did not receive a response until several days later. I had also asked a few questions in my email, but those questions were not addressed until the day of our reservation, which made the planning process more stressful than it needed to be for such a special occasion. The food was also quite mediocre. The pasta was overly salty, and we specially ordered chicken Alfredo, which was not on the menu. Unfortunately, the chicken was dry and the dish lacked flavor. The calamari was also dry and did not have the crispy texture we expected. Additionally, we ordered the New York steak medium rare, but it arrived much closer to well-done and was quite dry. I chose not to complain during the dinner because it was my daughter's 16th birthday, and I did not want to disrupt her special celebration. However, I was disappointed that the restaurant did not seem particularly accommodating or willing to work with us, especially considering that we were planning a milestone birthday celebration. I actually haphazardly stumbled upon this place a few months back after hanging out at a brewery…read morenext door. After scoping out the vibes of the place and the menu, I told myself to make sure to give this a shot. The place is in a redeveloped corner of Alameda right next to the bay. Probably used to be Navy base grounds back in the day. But now there's a couple of blocks worth of hip warehouse-y type of buildings, mostly restaurants, beer spots, some lofts and a little retail commerce. Very happening even though the surrounding area is a ghost town. Dining area not too big, maybe a couple of rooms that can hold about 20-30 heads each. Think there's another room for a private party/overflow. Decor pretty minimalist and stark. Service on the upscale side but in my stay, matched the decor, very minimalist and stark. Efficient enough but a little terse with little emotion. But I know service personality can differ from time to time or person to person. Just my obsy for one out. Daily Crudo ($20/4*) I think this rotates daily. Our choices that day was hamachi or a house smoked sturgeon. The sturgeon really piqued my interest but then it really wouldn't be a 'crudo' anymore would it, since I relate crudos to something 'raw-ish'. So I chose the hamachi. Very pretty plating, I love symmetry and balance. The thin slices of hamachi were indeed fresh, sitting in a stealthy pool of yuzu and olive oil. There are some fresno pepper slices and microgreens that garnish and a delicious nori cracker to break and accompany the crudo. This went really well with my glass of Fume Blanc. Caeser ($17/4.5*) We split this salad as their version sounded super cool. A miso-tinged Caeser dressing, lots of rustic garlic croutons and feathery soft grated parm and a soft-boiled egg. I love properly made Caesers and this was one of the best and unique versions I've ever had. The umami punch and the diverse textures just hit with me. A tad salty for a salad, but the crunchy and refreshing lettuce was able to absorb the salt blast. Huge salad too, like ideal for splitting and ridiculously large if for 1. Beef Short Rib ($43/4*) This was on special that night, and since I wasn't feeling Steak Frites (their only other beef entree option) this kinda fell on my lap. Very heavy and hearty dish. The short rib part was impeccable, super tender, gotta be sous vide. Perfectly seasoned with braising elements completely penetrated into the meat. There was a coarse gravy/sauce that covered which was okay, may have been the braising liquid just pureed. Served atop a huge pile of some risotto that I didn't inquire about. This risotto is what made the dish especially heavy. I ate most of it and it put me in a heavy carb coma. Lol. But there was a nice serving of perfectly cooked broccolini which helped balanced out the rich beef and carb heavy risotto. Chocolate Bar ($13/4.5*) Shared this for dessert as I really couldn't take more than just a few bites after the filling entree. But was this impressive, like high end dessert quality. Whoever does the desserts here definitely has some pedigree. The precision cut bar consisted of 3 layers. A brownie layer; a Bailey's mousse; and a salted caramel layer. I was loving the texture of all the different layers playing on one another. And every flavor was distinct without being overly sweet, which hit the right chords with me. A thick ganache garnished off to the side, which was good but just seemed a bit overkill with the already chocolate dominant bar. I think a cream element would have been a better contrast instead of rich chocolate on rich chocolate. But very minor quip on an otherwise skillful dessert. I finished the last few sips of my glass of Rhone with this dessert, and it left me one happy camper. I would definitely return as their style with flavors hits an accord with me. A little French, a smidge of Japanese and a lot of California. Rounding to a fiver, as this place made me more happy than not.

We came as a party of 7. Great ambiance for happy hour!! $1 oysters and fun drinks (but we didn't…read moretry this time). Note that there is a limit to 30 oysters per table. I really like how they let you build your seafood experience exactly how you want it, from the type of seafood to the seasoning and spice level. The only thing was I think the spice level could've been kicked up a notch. Our table ordered a mix of oysters, garlic noodles, Cajun fries, shrimp, crawfish, mussels, which came with corn, potatoes, sausage and hard boiled egg! The seafood was fresh and the sauce coated everything nicely without being overwhelmingly salty, and the corn and potatoes soaked up all the seasoning. All for a very reasonable price if you get the combo, which comes in 3 different tiers! The oysters were a standout--fresh, briny & I loved all the different sauces like horse radish and cocktail on the side. I do wish the fries were a bit more crispy and could've gone heavier with the Cajun seasoning, but that's personal preference. The atmosphere is casual, lively, and perfect for big groups. If you're looking for a customizable seafood boil with fresh oysters, fun drinks, and plenty of options to build your ideal meal, Rockin Crawfish is definitely worth a visit

I was very disappointed with my recent takeout order. Before placing my order, I specifically asked…read morewhether the crawfish were live, and the waitress told me they were available. Based on that conversation, I expected fresh live crawfish, which was available Tuesday when I ordered from DoorDash the previous time. After I got home and opened my order this time. it was clear that the crawfish had been frozen. If the restaurant serves frozen crawfish, that's fine, but customers should be given accurate information when they ask directly about the product right? I feel misled because I relied on what I was told when making my purchase. Transparency is important, and I hope the restaurant does a better job communicating with customers about whether their crawfish are live or previously frozen. VERY DISHONEST BUSINESS SMH.
