The atmosphere is wonderful. The staff is very friendly and incredibly knowledgeable. The sushi chef was very well versed in everything sushi. The restaurant is family owned and operated and the love and care that goes into it shows. The sushi is incredibly fresh and the portions are very generous. The chef explained the different aspects of the menu, which is very extensive, and how they made their food. Everything was made from scratch including their sauces. The presentation of the food was very inviting and it all tasted amazing. The thick slices of sashimi melted in our mouths. The tempura was light, fluffy, and crunchy. We would definitely frequent this place again and again. There is no question in my mind that this restaurant deserves 5 stars! read more

I'll admit, I didn't expect above average sushi in the middle of Renton. So to my surprise, I was pleased to get it! Awesomes: -outdoor patio -quiet but kid friendly -service staff- so nice -pictures on the menu! -their sweet tea -"out of the box" rolls are YUM Not So Awesomes: -maybe on the pricier side, but i'm ok with that because IMO you pay for the combo of quality and quantity and they passed in both those departments too! The mackerel (Saba) is fresh. Unlike a lot of other places. Definitely the best sushi in Renton. The sushi chef was even nice enough to make my caterpillar roll,.. custom with salmon. The presentation is equal to the quality of fish. This place is definitely a hidden gem! read more

I'm a big sushi lover and have never actually been here, but have gotten delivery multiple times. Their fish is fresh and tender (the tuna could use some improvement) and their California and Rainbow rolls are excellent. Even though most people reviewing here on Yelp seemed to enjoy their visit, I was underwhelmed, and didn't enjoy my visit at all. As I was alone, I sat at the bar, and was basically staring at a blank wall. There was not a lot of room to move or put your legs. The whole restaurant was only cleaned superficially, and there was dust and dirt visible everywhere, so it's not like "oh there was some dirty spots on the floor because it was the middle of the shift". Perhaps it was specific to that location in the restaurant, but there was a nasty smell coming from the kitchen, where other food was being prepared. Clearly there is a serious issue with ventilation in that kitchen. As I came for Sushi, the smell of the kitchen was nauseating. I had to wait for about 45min to finally get half my order, and the 2nd half came about 10m later. As others have stated, the rolls are bland and dry. The fish used is OK quality, but by far not as good as it should be. Size and shape of the fish for nigiri, and I saw another patron being served sashimi, was all wrong too. I doubt the sushi chefs had any form of actual training in a sushi kitchen. In all, it was "just OK", but having eaten sushi at dozens of restaurants over the world, this one is far behind. Would not recommend. I ordered the curry fried rice.. not sure why it is named curry fried rice when it is literally curry with fried rice on the side. I ordered it with chicken... complete waste of money. The chicken was super fatty and soggy... I couldn't even finish it. I only ate two pieces. The rice tasted like it was day old sushi rice and large clumps of hard rice mixed in. The best part of the meal was the free chocolate they give you with your check. Let me preface this review with how disappointed I am with this restaurant. This is the first review I have ever done for Yelp but they have inspired to write this. My wife and I usually visit this restaurant once a week for a meal if possible. The service is atrocious at this place and honestly if I could give zero stars I would. Our latest dinning experience was the last straw and will not be returning in the future. It's unfortunate as we do like the food here. After being seated our drink order was taken promptly. But after that the two people taking orders couldn't be bothered with taking our food order. Another couple's order was taken that had been seated after us and another that was seated before us. We were completely ignored. The excuse given was the staff was flustered even though the restaurant wasn't full at the time and at best was only 2/3 full. Unfortunately we will not be patronizing this restaurant in the future as we did like the food. Poor service for us completely overshadows the food and ruins the dinning experience. read more

The chef is a wonderful and personable man with a serious artistic talent for food and presentation. I have eaten food from here at least ten times wether it be take-out, delivery, or my favorite... at the beautiful and homely restaurant. I don't care what others say about this place because every time I eat here I feel good. The fish and other ingredients are fresh, the servers are very nice and pay attention to you well. The best advice I could give a perspective customer is to simply walk in and order a single roll because after that first bite you will sit down and stay a while. Another great feature of Sushi Cafe is that there is no corkage fee for bringing your own alcohol. So bring on the bottles of white wine! read more

This would be a 3 1/2 star review.... I was wary....or so wary of this place. Granted they are right next store to my favorite wine shop and have always smelled amazing. But usually when it comes to sushi it is hit or miss with me. This was a was a hit! You are in a strip mall, yes --but the place is bright, cheery and very well maintained inside. Comfortable seating for something so small, with even outdoor areas when the weather is nicer. It felt nice being there. Service was quick, friendly, and not too pushy. The menu is fairly large. I came for sushi but was SERIOUSLY tempted by my neighbors noodles. Im glad I stuck with the sushi though... I was severely happy with everything we ordered... Good spider roll, good spicy tuna. The only thing I could have done without was the taste of the boy's scallop roll --but thats because I dont like scallops. Plenty of Sake on the menu too if that is your thing. Also, when parking the dog outside to pop into the wine store these guys gave my pooch some water. Extra points for being extra nice when I wasn't even your customer! read more

Very happy that a sushi joint opened up down the street from us, we had to try it. We sat at the bar and immediately we were served by a very nice and friendly sushi chef, who is also the owner. The place is family owned and his teenage kids took our orders. It was kinda funny watching them call the sushi chef "dad." The food is really fresh and good. The place is very clean and decorated nicely. The only complaint I have is that it seemed sorta on the expensive side. We just stopped by to get a little sushi snack but the otoro we ordered ended up being so expensive that we were receipt-shocked upon seeing the $70 bill. Geezo peezo. Spending $70 for 2 people, I'd expect to at least get a good fill. I'd go here again and probably would come here more often if the prices were a little less expensive. read more

Thank baby Jesus that this place has great pricing and the food is good. But come on!!!! Their service staff are so ill-trained. I walked in and the service staff didn't know how to seat us. Then we waited 15 minutes and still didn't get any water or tea. I had to asked them to return one of the soy sauce dish because it has spicy mayo left over on it. Then I had to ASK them to take our order... by that time I was already seated for 34 minutes and finally gotten my tea. Then we ordered too much, so we need a box to-go. She gave us a 4" plastic hinged box for three rolls of sushi. I had to ask for another. My question to her is, how can someone fit 3 rolls in a container that is the same side as a man's palm? Omg. With that being said, the white elephant roll is not bad. But their service staff needs to get some training 101 and take their brains to work. read more

I am sad to leave this review. The two stars are purely for the quality of the sushi. The sushi chefs here work very hard and this place gets very busy on weekend nights. My boyfriend and I showed up fairly early on a Friday evening and put our name in - we were told about 30 minutes wait time. We waited and finally got sat at the sushi bar. A very friendly girl took our drink orders and brought us our drinks then asked if we were ready for our server to take our order. We told her we were and she left to get him. Five minutes went by, ten minutes, at almost the twenty minute mark I stopped her and asked if we could order. She ran and got the server and he quickly took our order. We kept a menu and let him know we would likely be ordering more. That was the last time we saw him. We got our miso and nigiri, then one of our rolls, then another person we had never seen came and tried to give us our check - we told him we were still waiting on a roll and were probably going to order more. We got our last roll, then we waited, and waited, and waited. Finally we decided maybe it was best we just leave. We asked the same guy who tried to bring us our check before to get it for us. Again, we saw our server one time. I know it gets busy in there but it's a small establishment and with several others bringing your drinks and checks for you it blows my mind that you can't get to two people for more than 30 seconds to take an order. I waited tables for a long time - I know it can be stressful and what it entails. That said, this was probably the worst service I've ever gotten. I left still hungry and our $47 check could have easily been a $100 check if we had even one more glimpse of our server. This place needs to pull it together. read more

I admit it! I'm a sushi snob! I have literally eaten sushi All over the world, excluding Japan. That's on my bucket list though. So in saying that, I will tell you that Sushi Cafe is my absolute favorite sushi spot, anywhere. I have lived in Renton since before they opened and I was one of the first customers to "try" it out. I gotta say, I was scared. I mean... It's Renton for God sake! But Jackie and the whole family was so welcoming and the Sushi.... Oh the sushi! After getting to know Jackie from, literally, eating there multiple times a week for the first year they were open, I found that he had not only apprenticed at Nishino, my favorite sushi spot when I was going to the UW, but he thankfully also apprenticed in Japan, and it shows. I have taught many non sushi eaters how to enjoy sushi and find a good sushi restaurant and my rules of thumb are: It should be small, family run, humble. The sushi should be simple and straightforward, not all crazy and convoluted because flavor and freshness is often sacrificed for the fancy appearance of a roll. And the chef must have spent a good part of his career apprenticed to a great sushi master, preferably in Japan at some point. This is an art form, not building burgers at Red Robin! Picking the fish to cleaning, cutting and preparing the sushi is serious business and can go wrong even before a roll has begun to be made. So Authenticity in your sushi chef is key. And you are gonna find all that and more in Jackie and now his son who is slowly giving dad a break from having to work 6 days a week. And if you are lucky, you will get to see his oldest daughter in the chef coat, as she is also apprenticed under her father now and she is doing awesome! So the sushi is fresh, simple, elegant, and flavorful. Try the daredevil, Seahawk, white elephant, firecracker, sunset, wasabi tobiko, crab wonton, anything with eel as he makes his won BBQ eel sauce and bbqs the eels there, any kitchen dish, and honestly and sushi as well. I'm having a hard time picking out specific ones to the you cause it has been SO rare that perfection hasn't been met, like maybe twice since they opened YEARS ago! Which is crazy cause everyone has an off day sometimes normally don't they? So, You won't be getting any of the weird connective tissue in your raw fish, and let me just say their kitchen dishes are Out of this world as well. All of them and I'm not joking! My husband and I have been suffering from an addiction to sushi Cafe for years now, both the sushi and the hot dishes. But thankfully they know us there very well by now and indulge our back to back nights at the sushi bar or calling in for takeout, with warm greetings at just the sound of our voices on the phone. Let's just say, When buying our first home the distance of houses we viewed, from the sushi Cafe, was seriously considered. We bought our home right down the street. I'm not even kidding. So i've been to this sushi place quite a few times and i keep going back for a reason!!! because IT'S PRETTY DAMN GOOD!!!! must be especially if it keeps me coming back for more!!! :-) If it's so good...why not 5 stars? Well...occasionally, when we go in there to eat, ALTHOUGH everyone is really nice and welcoming....sometimes the waitress seems to forget about us? I'd totally understand if it were busy and all the tables were full but....it's basically us and another couple in the place and it takes foreverrrrrr for us to see the waitress come out from where ever she was. BUT ANYWAY when she does come out, she's really nice and helpful. I just wish i didnt have to wonder where the hell our waitress went. :-) My favorites here would be the sunrise roll and the hella hot roll. Those two are always the "must haves" everytime i go there. If you're a fan of spicy food, i recommend that you try the hella hot roll. happy eating! read more

New restaurant, just found this place the other day. Nice little sushi place that is family owned. Small restaurant but very elegant and clean. The sushi chef is very nice and friendly. You can tell he's not japanese, and from the way he look i'm assuming he's chinese. Not bad for a sushi place around this area. Everything i ate tasted very fresh, one complain though was the toro was cut way too thin. The rice was ok, better than sushiland. I think they should use a different kind of seaweed wrap because the one they're using is way too chewy. i would come back again, since it's so close to where i live. read more

This is the best sushi I have ever had. So extremely fresh and flavorful. Melts in your mouth like butter. The chef taught me the Japanese word for "chef's choice" and I tried some amazing things I had never tasted before, or wouldn't have dared. I would name some of my favorite rolls or dishes but can't narrow it down. I tried new things both timesI have been there and can't say a negative thing about any of it. Service was great and extremely friendly. I have sat both at the tables and at the bar and in both cases received excellent service. My tea was kept hot, my plate full and they even brought over a sample of a new menu item to try so that was fun as well! I have been to all the sushi places in the south lake washington area and no one compares! You get a lot of food for the price too! read more

There's nothing quite like good a&% sushi... I've been disappointed before but after a serious sushi craving, I dragged my boyfriend down here. The atmosphere is very pleasant. Everything is very clean and nice. The sushi chef, very friendly as well as the waitstaff.. The sushi... I don't need to say much more. I've given this place 5 stars and this now ranks up there with Izumi in Kirkland. For those sushi enthusiasts, trust me on this one. You will not regret it! This is another one of those sushi restaurants that aren't over the top, but not too underwhelming as well. It serves very good quality sushi. Great staff too. I only give 5 stars to places that wow me the entire time, and 4 stars to places that I would definitely recommend to friends. My 3 stars is not a reflection of the taste of their food at all!
