I ended up coming here after a failed attempt to get into High Five Ramen which had a 3 hour wait? How about no...Sushi instead! ATMOSPHERE/ARCHITECTURE: 8/10 This place is rather dimly lit with a bar to the left and smaller table seating scattered around the restaurant. The bar is neat with all of the sushi chefs lined up in front of you hard at work so you can see exactly how they are putting your order together. The whole restaurant seats 50-60 with the bar seats totaling about ~10 of these seats. It's pretty busy on a Friday night and makes for a good dining experience. SERVICE: 10/10 Honestly, service was very good. The hostess was very attentive to us and updated our party as far as where exactly we were in the queue and how much longer of a wait it would be. The chefs and waitress were nice and amicable as well. I had no complaints here at all. FOOD: 8/10 Lychee Club - 6/10 - This drink did not really impress me at all and I did not really get any hints of the supposed lychee in this. It was not really fruity and marginally sweet. The presentation was nice, but I found it rather bland as a drink. Pork Tonkatsu Ramen - 7/10 - Having originally set out for ramen, of course it was appropriate to get it at least somewhere. The broth was rather bland, but salted appropriately. The noodles were soft and chewy but average overall. The pork tonkatsu was just average. It was crispy but also on the blander side. It wasn't bad overall, but just a very average ramen dish. Obviously this isn't their flagship item or anything and it would not be the reason for coming here. That of course is their sushi. Spicy Salmon Maki - 9/10 - The best way to judge a sushi restaurant is by the basics and fundamentals. The spicy salmon roll is a basic sushi roll that any respectable sushi restaurant should be able to put together without difficulty. The spicy flavor, fish and soft fluffy texture of the rice comes together exquisitely here. Their basic sushi is very good. Dragon Roll - 8/10 - The dragon roll was also quite good. I was not disappointed by how the eel and tempura shrimp came together in this dish as well. This was flavorful, well seasoned and the shrimp was nice and crispy. VALUE: 8/10 Overall, the value is pretty fair for what you get. PROBABILITY OF RETURN: 8/10 TO EAT OR NOT TO EAT: Definitely worth eating if you're a fan of sushi. So so good! I love the outdoor seating because chicago has such great weather in the summer. We also got cocktails and I got the Ube rum I believe and it was sooo good - could barely taste the alcohol. The food was delicious and came out very timely. I've been here a few times and have to say the food and service is consistently good. Everything came quickly but was well paced and we never felt rushed. We got the edamame, miso, and a few different rolls. The space itself is sort of cramped but I think the atmosphere makes for a good date night spot. I was sitting next to one of the brick walls which made it feel claustrophobic. I'd suggest trying to snag a table with a window towards the font of the restaurant. Sushi Dokku was pretty packed at 7pm on a Friday, aside from space on the bar. We started with the lamb chops. It was tender and melts in the mouth. Best of all, it was tender, but was not uncooked which often happens. It was a rainy day. Perfect for a hot bowl of Tonkatsu Ramen with pork shoulder. The broth has intense flavor and probably a little overpowered by the garlic. The ramen was a little too soft, overcooked. I prefer it with a little more resilience. I've lived in the neighborhood for over 5 years now and never had an experience like this at Sushi Dokku or any other busy restaurant in the area, for that matter. Yesterday, I had booked a work celebration and we chose this place, because it's so good. We had people coming in from around the Chicagoland area, and so we book at 6pm. The table has a placard stating a 2 hour table policy. So we had 2 of our group of 5 that literally got lost (city rookies), and so the waiter started to warn us about our time limit only 45 minutes in. Then the manager stopped by and reiterated to us that not only is there a 2 hour limit, but it's now 1 hour and 45 minutes and they need the table for the next reservation. Then, they brought us the check while we were eating and kept trying to clear the table. I get it that it's a busy place and they have to honor reservations and many restaurants in the area have a 2 hour policy and the placard on the table is enough. But if we ended up doing 2:15, that is within the norms, imho. You can't start harping on the time and rushing a customer 45 mins into a 2 hour seating. I just haven't seen anybody do that. Listen the food was still great and that's why I've come here so often, but you have to deliver on good service as well. On my first trip here, I remember that we called the same day and they made the extra effort to accommodate us and even got us patio seating, because we requested it. We were super-appreciative. Amazing sushi! The restaurant is very small, definitely needed a reservation for a Sunday night. Tables are very close together and it was loud- more of a casual atmosphere. Cocktails were great- I had the Something Spicy which actually had a nice kick and was not too sweet. Had a generous amount of alcohol. Also tasted the Eastern medicine cocktail with wasabi in it- also great. We had two rolls, the crispy maguro and the miso salmon- good size and flavorful. The real star though was the "chef dressed nigiri" we ordered 5 different ones and they were so delicious with melt in your mouth fish on top. My favorite was the scallop. Not a cheap place- price for two cocktails, 2 rolls and 10 nigiri was about $170 (including tax and tip) but we left satisfied and would like to return some day. Came here on a Thursday night around 6pm with a group of 4. We had a reservation upstairs for the main dining room but opted to sit downstairs in "boozebox" since there were open tables and we wanted a louder, more 'fun' vibe. Our server came over to our table right away and wanted to take our order. He seemed a little rushed throughout the whole meal and said a few weird remarks to us but nothing worth mentioning in detail - just a little strange... Anywho, we all got Miso soups and they were okay - nothing special. The Tempura appetizer was also just alright in my opinion. The main star of the show is *obviously* the sushi at this place. It was fantastic. I ordered the special salmon nigiri that is 'off menu' but our server recommended it. It was really good but very spicy. The Tuna Truffle is to die for. 1000% recommend ordering this - 2 pieces come in an order and I could have eaten 10. My friend got the chef's choice veggie role and it was massive and delicious. The sushi chefs are truly talented at Sushi Dokku. All in all, appetizers ok, sushi is incredible. At some other sushi places, my palate gets mixed up, and I forget which roll I'm eating because they all look/taste similar. Here I did not have that issue! The rolls were quite distinct from one another in both flavor and presentation. In terms of specific dishes, the Takoyaki stood out because it was crispy, rich, and flavorful. I had been wanting to try this trendy sushi spot for a while now, and I'm so glad the restaurant was able to accommodate our timing on a busy Saturday night. Our service was great, and our waiter gave us recommendations for appetizers to share. They were a bit salty, but a nice change from the sushi we were having for our main dish. The cucumber and aged tofu salad was pretty small, and not that great either. The Aemono salad was a nice simple salad with a great carrot dressing. We ordered five rolls, which was the perfect portion for four people to share. The restaurant is laid back and it was very enjoyable being outdoors. The servers are all quite friendly and attentive with refilling water and getting more drinks or food. We ordered quite a variety over our visits but our favorites are the Dressed Oysters (get them dressed, it's worth it), the Hot Daisy, and the Miso Salmon rolls. Both are flavorful and have a nice kick to them. Sushi Dokku has turned into our go-to place in West Loop for sushi and it never disappoints!
