I have been eating at Sushi Kanpai for years. At one point, I was immensely addicted to the baked salmon rolls, and had eaten over $3k's worth. No kidding, they're that good, with a wonderful blend of heat, a mild spice, and a true house specialty -- I used to order them 3 at a time! I've had hot rolls elsewhere but this is my fave. I've since cut back and gone to try other rolls, like the spider roll (also shown here) is my fave for how they prepare it so crisply. Over time, I suspect my life partner and I have tried almost ALL the dishes on the menu. It's refreshing to have their sushi and sashimi with hot green tea, and the overall atmosphere tends to be on the quieter side. Various music may be playing, but it's not too loud. While occasionally they have an "off day", the overall consistency of the speed, service, and sheer deliciousness has been superb. The owner and staff are kind and attentive, and though there have been changes over time, they remember my tastes. I've come here on several occasions for both dine in and take out and have never been disappointed. This is what seems to be a Korean run sushi joint but don't let that deter you - the sushi is great here. They have a great happy hour menu which I usually get for some great cheap rolls. My favorite are the salmon roll, broiled eel roll and wasabi hamachi roll. Staff are courteous and friendly. I've never had to wait long or at all to be seated. Pretty quiet establishment. Our senior friends live in Skyline nearby. We came from the Eastside to eat with them. First time there. Many Skyline residents were dining. It was our first time there but recommended by our friends because of the proximity to their place. They had not ate there either before. We started with draft beer and Otokoyama sake. We chose some chicken teriyaki, beef Udon, an obento box with many items and Okamase sushi. Good variety and perfect balance for three seniors and a young adult. Had a bad experience ordering from here via Uber Eats. Ordered the spicy crunch roll. Per the menu, "snow crab meat, cucumber, spicy tuna, crab meat, and crunchy tempura flakes." What I actually got in the roll was fake crab (krab) even though crab meat is listed not once, but twice on the menu. In addition to this surprise, the roll had an off fishy smell and flavor. But I had to run an errand at the vet next door this evening and decided to stop in. Very glad I did, because I had forgotten how good it is. Found this cute little sushi spot and decided to try it out. Food was alright. Tuna wasn't fresh. We order the first round of nigiri and rolls and it took a while to be prepared. Then we ordered a second sound of sushi and it took over 30mins for our food to be brought to the table. I don't know if they were short staffed or not. What can I say? I'm not sure how this place has 4 stars. Worst sushi rice I have ever seen. Literally mush, could not distinguish grains at all. Sushi rice should be cooked just right and well seasoned. This rice was mush and not seasoned at all. Got the California roll and shrimp roll. California roll was just a Kani imitation crab stick, a few small slivers of cucumber and avocado. Shrimp roll barely had any shrimp mostly rice and some avocado. I hate complaining to any chef but this was just bad. Asked them to take both rolls off of the bill. Also had edemame which were microwaved instead of steamed with regular salt. Pretty basic. Overall even with happy hour pricing it was not worth it. Although, girlfriend had the yellowtail sashimi and it was OK. Large pieces of fish but not well cut, they use large pieces to make up for lack of quality. Decent sushi rice is just so basic for sushi I feel, even supermarkets can get it right. read more

Pretty much once a month, I would find myself here, a dinner respite before Taizé at St. James. Most of the time, I'm here to sample their simple, but solid happy hour menu. What you have to think about is, they serve it good, and it's a legitimate happy hour menu, with solid rolls, not some watered down half menu. The result is a roll or sushi with plenty of fish, a smattering of pickled ginger, enough food to feed an empire, for the price of two. Their heart attack is their largest roll, and yes, it's tempura, and covered in a spicy mayo. Their "Seattle roll" and "Spicy Tuna" is 8 good sized pieces, and worth every bite. Do know: If you are happing it for Happy Hour, you needs to get a drink; no takeout, no substitutions. Cons, their Wasabi is pretty tame, which tells me, it's probably not real... their rice isn't quite the right texture, either long grain pretending to be sushi, or maybe a tad blown-out, but who cares, it's still tasty, and besides for a place that is off the main streets, it's holds up well. The sashimi however was delicious, the seaweed salad taste like it was refrigerated then served. Over all I fault myself for not trying the specialty rolls and being cheap. I came here with my Fiancé on Black Friday 2018 at 4pm, when they had just opened on this day. The waiters assisted right away and were friendly. Once our food arrived we were pleased by the presentation. It got better once we ate!!! Great quality sushi rolls and great service. The price is decent and it is worth it. I'm obsessed. I'm a regular customer because I live in the building so I get the privilege of being able to smell it from the lobby. Their happy hour is first of all incredible. The heart attack roll is hands down my favorite with the crunchy fried batter on the edges and a little bit of kick spice to it! The lunch special is also amazing too. East coast sushi snob reporting here. I was in the area for work and found this great sushi spot with a quick Yelp search. Finding out it was within walking distance from my hotel was a plus. I made it with 45 minutes to spare before they closed after lunch service. I sat at the sushi bar which I personally feel gets you a completely different experience in sushi restaurants particularly. The sushi chef was great - very attentive and gave great suggestions. The wait staff was just ok; not very friendly but the sushi chef really made the experience for me. They had a great selection of specialty rolls and he loved that I asked for a roll suggestion. I love tuna so he suggested the Red & Red which was delicious. I wasn't a huge fan of the sauce on the plate but it was different and I'm always open tot thing new things. He also suggested the Tako Taki appetizer which I never would have ordered on my own. Don't freak out, but they serve it with the bonito flakes "dancing" on top of the octopus dumpling balls which is really cool too see! Food overall was really great and the sushi chefs service was even better. Highly recommend if you're in the area. read more

Kanpai has great service and ambiance but their sushi was mediocre. I ordered the scallop roll, which was a California roll topped with Cajun crab, fresh scallop and Japanese sauce topped with massago baked until brown. I did not like it at all. I felt there was too much sauce on the roll so I couldn't make out the other ingredients. Actually, most of their items that comes with sauce is overwhelmed by the sauce. I think if it had less sauce if would be more enjoyable. Their spicy baked mussels are the only exception to the sauce warning. They're so tender and I love the kick of spice the sauce gives the dish. Oh and I also tried their salmon roll and it tasted off. I would recommend to stay clear of that roll. Not exactly my favorite sushi joint but I'll probably come back only for happy hour. read more

The deep fried "heart attack" roll was less crispy than would be desired. The avocado roll was heavy on the rice. I did like the tempura combo, which came with two pieces of shrimp and three pieces of veggie. We ordered veggie gyoza that never came, but still found their way onto the check at the end. If you are looking for mid-priced sushi to satisfy a craving highly recommend. It won't blow you away but you will be satisfied. It's been over a year since I've eaten here last (we moved away) but still so consistently good. Tonight, my fiancé and I ordered: seaweed salad, chicken & pork gyoza, salmon sashimi, eel roll, shrimp roll, spicy tuna tempura roll, a beer and a glass of wine....all for $55 including tip!! In my book that is a total steal, especially in Seattle! The staff here is very nice and attentive, keeping my water glass full the whole time, which I truly appreciate. Delivery was pretty quick Our order. Spicy Karaage Chicken: Chicken was not crispy at all. Taste was good. The spicy is actually from the hot dipping sauce mixture they provide as there is no spice on the chicken. I'm sure it would've tasted better if it were hot and crispy but it came a tad warmer than cold and the batter was a bit soggy. 3/5 Shrimp and Vegetable Tempura: Very good tempura. Light and crispy. Good selection of veggies. 5/5 Spicy Salmon Roll: I would never order this again. I'm not sure if it is even salmon. It just tasted like some sort of mush. I hate to waste food but tbh I don't think it's worth it. 0/5 Yellowtail roll: This roll isn't anything special but it was a delight to eat after tasting the spicy salmon roll. If you like yellowtail then you know what to expect with this one. 5/5 Super Spider Roll: It's Friday night so we thought we'd splurge a little and get a $17 roll. To start with, we had some warm miso soup and Shrimp & Vegetable Tempura (just the right amount of crispness) then we had some Seaweed Salad while waiting for our sushi order. Loved this place! The sushi was delicious! We came here for Happy Hour (4- closing on Saturday), while we were visiting Seattle. We enjoyed the delicious shrimp tempura appetizers. The shrimp was perfectly succulent and not overcooked or dry at all. We also ordered the spicy baked mussels. They came topped with tobiko roe, scriracha mayo, and sliced scallions on top. The tobiko was a great addition! I really enjoyed the subtle texture they offered. Pure delicious baked mussels! The Philly Roll was great as well, especially for $4.50! My husband had the baked salmon roll, which he couldn't stop raving about either... very good sushi! He also had seared salmon nigiri, which was delicious as well. The miso soup seemed a little too flavorful, and almost a little too salty for our tastes, but otherwise, we really enjoyed our entire meal and will definitely come back once we are in Seattle again!
