Whenever we vacation down in SD, we always have one day where we order a ton of sushi and stuff our faces. Food: We tried out Sushi Kuchi for the first time. The service was amazing, but I had to take 2 stars off because of the food coloring in the spicy tuna. I eat a lot of sushi, so I know that tuna should be red, but the unnaturally colored spicy tuna was a hard "NO" for me. I had to take the spicy tuna off everything before I ate it. Service: I think her name was Angie. She was extremely helpful and had us in & out of there. We complicated things by asking for party trays last minute, but through all that....she was very patient. The store front and logo are so fun I thought it would be a similar vibe inside but it was oddly quiet and a little dreary. The rolls were good, but not quite impressive. Each roll had a great amount of content so two rolls was very filling whereas I usually need at least 2.5 at other places. Super Dragon Caterpillar Sunshine Sweet Hawaiian Salmon I couldn't taste much of the Sweet Hawaiian other than that it was spicy. The Sunshine roll however had more taste and is a good choice for any salmon lover. Super Dragon had so much eel! It felt like the most unique roll that we tried because of that. We enjoyed our rolls at Sushi Kuchi but it seems that their menu is priced to match the other sushi places nearby, not to match their actual quality and experience. The yellowtail crudo w/jalapeño was fresh and tasty. Tempura shrimp was hot, crispy, and flavorful. Service: a little overbearing for my taste, 3/5. I felt our friendly hostess and server was hovering. When her support clocked in to work, he too was overly responsive. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate attentiveness. As far as sushi places in San Diego go, this place is tasty and affordable. While it's not my favorite sushi, but the service was great and the dishes were pretty good overall. Started off with some edamame and seaweed salad. The edamame was great, but I wasn't a fan of the seaweed salad at all. I couldn't eat more than a couple bites without wanting to spit it out. The rolls we got were the Sunshine Roll, Sweet Hawaiian Roll, Bad Boy Roll and Dragon Roll. The dragon roll and the bad boy roll were my favorites. All of them were enjoyable, however. I especially liked how all the dishes were made from fresh ingredients. It makes a big difference with sushi when fresh ingredients are used versus when they aren't. Like I said, this place is pretty good overall, but it isn't my favorite. I'd definitely be willing to come back and try some of their other rolls. read more

The service was good and the staff paid attention to us, but the food wasn't great. The restaurant looked dirty and rundown, which made it less enjoyable. The fish quality wasn't very good, and the imitation crab tasted strange, you could taste the miracle whip which is not my favorite. The spicy mayo had an old and unpleasant taste. Our experience began with my attempting to call the restaurant to check on the waitlist. The hostess answered and immediately asked me if she can put me on hold, but did not wait for me to answer before she clicked me over. When I finally got through, she did the same thing and put me on hold immediately again. When I finally spoke with her, I asked about the wait, and she said that there was no wait. I let her know that I was parking 50 feet from the restaurant. When we walked up to the door, suddenly, there was a 34-minute wait. While I understand that they cannot control if multiple parties just happened to walk in in front of us, it still was disappointing, especially the way she handled the situation. Our server was nice, if disengaged. At no point during our meal did he check to see if we were enjoying the food, and we waited forever to get our bill. In fact, after we order the food, we never saw him again. Now, onto the food... the edamame was fine, and the gyoza was good, and the cream cheese wontons had crab in them and were really good. The chicken teriyaki was delicious and fresh with quality chicken breast. When I go to a sushi restaurant for the first time, I always order the yellowtail nigiri or sashimi to test the quality of the fish. This was some of the freshest I have ever had. The sunshine role was OK. There was a lot more imitation crab than there was salmon. The playboy roll was pretty good, but there was quite a bit of mayo. All in all, this place is 4 stars. While the sushi is really good, the service is not great at all. It is also a bit on the expensive side. The next time I return to the San Diego area, I hope to try this place again to see if I have a better experience. read more

Been walking past this place for months and finally decided to give it a try. The signs for 50% are enticing but know it's not a deal-- with the half off it becomes the average price you expect to pay for sushi. Good service and super friendly staff. We got two sushi rolls that were pretty flavorful. The only complaint about the menu is it was difficult to find options that were not fried. The salmon collar was very delicious but the paper it was on got soggy and was hard to pull away from the salmon. (Tip if you're taking out from here) double check, and make sure everything is in your bag. Because even if you ask if everything is the bag, and they say yes, they don't mean it. That's what I did, and the food I had ordered had several items missing when I got home. Drove back to the restaurant to no apology for the missing food, and a wait time of about 10 to 15 minutes for one of my missing foods while the other hot food was getting cold. Would like to see better management and training with their staff. Tip for the restaurant, put a checkmark on the items on the receipt once you receive them so that way you know your order is complete before you give it to somebody. read more
