We had a pretty good meal and our service was great. It was mid-afternoon so not busy. Some interesting takes: I've never had spicy tuna on the outside of the roll. I was interested to see this and as I guessed, it doesn't hold up well. Additionally, I ordered the medium sashimi platter (vs ordering individual sashimi) and that was a mistake. We had several items that where "sashimi" however it was shrimp and other cooked fish. So I recommend just ordering the exact sashimi you wish and skip the special $85. read more

The restaurant is right next to the beach so I got the enjoy the sushi with a view. there was no dine in seating and they were practicing a lot of safe measures. We got seated pretty quickly. My friend and I were greeted and welcomed from the start. I really enjoy those welcoming encounters. They were busy and knew how to handle each and everyone of their customers. Staff thank you for being very kind even in a busy day. I had the cheese wontons. I found out about this place from my friend because of the 50% off rolls. For San Diego prices, it is pretty good and for the amount that you are getting I definitely think this is worth it. However, I am from the LA area and there are better sushi for a better price. But like I said, for San Diego, the price is reasonable and affordable! For this trip, I got the Star Wars roll which was a bit spicy for me but nonetheless, it was delicious because you are able to get both the sauce and meat equally and it wasn't overpowering as much. For the dragon roll, each piece had everything on it which I like because it doesn't matter which one you get you get all the ingredients. One biggest point for them is the presentation of them. It was nicely placed and it is very aesthetically pleasing to take a picture of. Parking was also very spacious but I know sometimes it can get confusing on where to park because it said that certain lots is for sushi kuchi. Only three stars because the service here is literally terrible. We came in and were put on the waitlist and told we would get a text when our table was ready. The main reason we came was for the $1 sake bombs (a steal) however, you can't order sake bombs until you place your order because they don't want the menus to get dirty. This policy is definitely understandable but fails to work if the waiter rarely comes by. I asked the waiter for garlic edamame and she told I can't order anything unless it's written on the paper. So we ordered our food and I wrote down 2 orders of edamame. Out came 3. Why? I'm not sure. The third sat there and wasn't eaten. When our bill came I explained to our server that we shouldn't have been charged the $5 for the edamame that was literally untouched and we didn't order it. She said it was because I asked for one in the beginning. I tried to explain to her that she told me we couldn't order anything unless it was written down. She didn't care. So then I gave her my card to pay and she took so long with it we actually had to walk up to her and ask her for it back.... huhhhh? We were desperately craving sushi after four days of Mexican food and chose Sushi Kuchi since it was close to my friend's apartment and actually open on Mondays (unlike many of the others nearby). Our party of 9 was seated right away with no reservation and quickly given menus and water. The ambiance inside was casual, no different from your typical sushi spot. I ordered a hot Green Tea, Miso Soup, and the Play Boy Roll. Service was pretty speedy and it didn't take us long to get our food. The Green Tea and Miso Soup were very standard, but I did love the Play Boy Roll - thick cuts of salmon and tasty spicy mayo. Would happily eat this one again! The epitome of a hidden gem, Sushi Kuchi is a hole-in-the-wall spot you should absolutely visit in San Diego. With less than two dozen tables inside, it's a quaint little restaurant with a customer-facing sushi bar. It wasn't busy on the Monday afternoon we visited, so the waitress didn't have a problem combining tables for our party of 11. We ordered a plethora of sushi rolls in addition to some gyoza, miso soup, and edamame. Considering the amount of food and drinks 11 people can order, this place churned it all out very quickly and at the same time -- except for one of my friends who had to wait an extra 10-15 minutes after the rest of the table had received their food. Other than that, this place nailed it. The sushi was fresh and topped with just enough extras to make a medley of flavors pop in your mouth. When she brought our sushi it was very passive aggressive and rude. As we were eating the same hostess brought a Birthday Treat for a table in the restaurant. Excited to see what little celebration would consist of, my husband and I watched. The hostess brought a treat and said in a very monotone voice "happy birthday". It was an overall dissapointment just to see her work ethic and her energy towards customers. As my husband and I cleaned our table and stacked our dishes the busser seemed annoyed and did not seem social at all. And after that we just wanted to leave after feeling unwelcome during our visit. The hostess then said I could not get my free roll because i did not notify her when we were ordering. I explained it wasn't on the flyer outside that i read numerous times to make sure our deal would apply and she said theres nothing she could do about it. To leave on a positive note, the food was amazing and the chefs made it with great speed. I work in the food industry myself so I know how it goes but from a customers point of view this location needs workers who WANT to serve and bring a welcoming energy. read more

We were recently staying in SD and some friends came to visit our hotel for an outdoor, socially distanced picnic. We all wanted sushi and I'd be lying if I said the name of this place didn't partially influence my decision! We ordered from Doordash and I'm so glad we did! Because we were trying to feed 6 people, this was slightly annoying and we broke it up into 2 separate orders. If we are offering more money, wouldn't they want to take it? Anyway, delivery arrived quickly. The "discounts" left the rolls at pretty much normal prices, but they were reasonable for sushi. We ordered salmon carpaccio, a Philly roll, a Playboy roll (my fave!) a White Boy roll, a Sensual Pleasure roll (how could you not order this from a place called Sushi Kuchi?),a Ninja roll, a Dragon roll, and salmon nigiri. I loved the carpaccio and nigiri more than the special rolls... even though they were good, the actual fish wasn't enough to stand out. However, I really did like that the menu had something for everyone, and most of the rolls looked delicious.... they weren't heavily dependent on Cali roll bases. Not the highest quality sushi I've ever had but still good. We really enjoyed it, the kids went back for seconds and thirds, and we were very happy with what we paid, the service, and definitely getting our sushi fix! Here's where they got my 5 star rating tho, the sushi chef payed attention when I said I was allergic to avocado (I know, we can cry about it together later). What he did was he knew we might want to share our dishes, I thought he gave him my avocado on the side. Instead, when my boyfriend asked if I wanted to try his, I said no because that one had avocado and the chef said "no I put the avocado from all on the side so you guys can share" um.... that was amazing. Delicious! I don't know I it's because it's noon on Valentine's Day so they are fully stocked with fresh fish for tonight's "amateur night" but regardless the fish was fresh and amazing. The Sunshine roll was good!!! The ginger peanut sauce on top makes this roll!! Hubby had the pink roll. It was a 4/5. So good but we added crunches on top to give it something crunchy each bite. I came in here for lunch after a day at the beach, and was pleased to see a 50% off menu. We were quickly seated and given waters. After taking a quick look at the menu, we put in our order: Sweet Hawaiian Roll Sunshine Roll Hawaiian Roll Vegas Roll Dragon Roll Playboy Roll A lot of food, but we were hungry. The rolls came out in less than 10 minutes after we ordered. We were very impressed. The rolls were average. They skimped a bit on the fish that goes on the outside of the roll (for the Sunshine and Hawaiian rolls). The Sweet Hawaiian roll was delicious. The Vegas roll was great too. The dragon roll was pretty good, but same as the sunshine and hawaiian rolls, they skimped on the eel that goes on top. The Play Boy roll was pretty gross. Some of the pieces had nothing but cream cheese inside them, and the roll had too much spicy mayo on it. I would not recommend it. The service was average at best. The waiter was friendly, but walked past us multiple times without refilling my water. I ended up taking my boyfriend's water cup and pouring half of it over to mine. Considering we ordered 6 large rolls, our bill of $47 after tax was pretty reasonable. To be quite honest, Sushi Kuchi is definitely not my favorite sushi place in San Diego, let alone of all time. However, my track record begs to differ. I've mostly dined out (am grateful they're still doing delivery & takeout during this time), but was able to dine in once. This location is nice in that it's close to the beach and is quite spacious for a spot on the PB strip. There's decent seating and is your standard casual sushi joint. Parking's not the easiest to find, but it's not impossible either, especially if you're going at off-peak PB festivities hours. Service is standard. I don't think it's the most amazing quality of sushi, but it's also not bad! I haven't had a bad roll here, and in fact, I'm far more obsessed with the Sunshine Roll than I'd like to admit. That's probably my top recommendation since every component of it comes together quite well without being overwhelming or fishy; also, the house dressing is really addicting and give it a nice savory taste. Beware that it is a little on the stickier rice side, given how the sauce isn't viscous and it drenches the entire thing. Other recommendations are the Chef's Scallop Dynamite (safe baked sauce with good sauce to protein ratio), Lips Special Roll (actually had quite the spice to it), Bad Boy Roll (for all the lemon + yellowtail fanatics out there), Pink Roll (solid/kinda basic roll) and Tiger Roll (safe option) (roughly in order of highest to lesser). Considering how most of the aforementioned is discounted all the time and how reliable the establishment as whole is, it's pretty worth it (you can see how the addiction has crept up on me).
