If I can summarize the highlight of my most recent NY trip, I would say the following 3 words "Sushi Lab Rooftop". What an amazing experience and a steal! In my area, omakase is so expensive. Granted that it was all made and placed on a plate versus being sliced individually and given to you piece by piece, it was still an amazing price! I decided to stop by at 2PM as a walk-in. I had called ahead of time and they said that was fine. The kitchen closes at 2:30PM. Arriving to the location, we checked in with the front desk and they walked us to the elevator. We had a whole unique journey going to the rooftop! Really adventurous I would say. My date and I had ordered drinks and we both felt like they were the best drinks we've had in a while. I ordered the chef's selection 10 piece omakase for $60 and it came with wagyu and uni. I then tried the uni macaron and that is the most instagrammable picturesque food art I've ever seen! I really have to give this restaurant props for their creativity, speed, and quality. I loved every bite and wish I could eat this meal every single day. We had a Girls' Night Out and participated in the Restaurant Week menu at this location. After you check-in at the Sanctuary Hotel, you need to take the elevator to the 6th floor and climb up 2 flights of stairs to the main dining room. It is very bright and roomy on the rooftop. There are heaters everywhere, but don't sit by the window on a chilly day. The breeze comes through the cracks. Our server was kind enough to let us know they have a brunch menu on the weekends with bottomless mimosas and bellinis. The items on the Restaurant Week menu were so tasty, too. Found this sushi place while scrolling and it was super close to my hotel. I had to come when I seen they had matcha crunch roll on the menu. I love anything with any type of matcha anything lol. It's on the rooftop of Sanctuary hotel. The hotel was beautiful btw. You go through the hallway, up the elevator and then up two flights of stairs to get there. The service was fantastic. Everybody was super helpful and the place was decorated so beautifully. I ordered the ichigo margarita, matcha crunch roll, and then I got the sweet shrimp nigiri/sashimi. The matcha crunch roll was soooooo good. Had shrimp tempura inside, the little match pearls on top. They didn't add any flavor but they were cute and you could feel the little pop in your mouth when eating them. I loved it. The margarita was delicious and strong good strawberry flavor. The sweet shrimp nigiri wasn't my favorite. It was two small shrimp with a lil sauce on top. I thought it was going to be different but I still ate it as I like shrimp but I'm not the biggest fan of raw/less cooked shrimp personally. I will definitely eat here again when I'm in NYC. Great spot for date night! We opted for the 15 course omakase. I think the journey to get here is very interesting. You go through the fancy doors of a hotel, walk through a dark magical maze to an elevator, arrive on a hotel floor, find a sign for a staircase that then leads you to this rooftop gem. I really enjoy their sister restaurant, The Chemistry Room which is in the next door building. I think rooftop has a more casual vibe and different menu. If you want a more traditional omakase experience, I'd recommend Chemistry Room. But I'm glad I got to try the rooftop. read more

SUCH a beautiful rooftop! Honestly, I would come here just for the views and the vibes. The drinks and delicious food were an added bonus. I appreciate a place with great music but when it's not too loud where you can still hear the people you're with, so LOVE that about Sushi Lab. We decided on a few sake bottles to share which were amazing and love the low price. We came with a party for 4, 2 of us decided on the basic omakase and the other 2 decided on the fancier ones just because we were different levels of hungry. Everything was honestly delicious!!! Perhaps, my only complaint was that the omakase portions were very tiny bites but honestly for the price, I get it!!! It was still really fresh, flavorful, a different variety and I was still gasping at every bite. Everything complimented well especially with the decor, love this spot if you're looking to have a fun time with a group. If you're looking for mindblowing sushi or omakase, there's probably other spots in the city but you won't get the same vibes and views as Sushi Lab :) read more

Do. The. Omakase. I almost didn't and would have regretted it. While the rolls were good, the $60 Omakase was for sure the winner. I don't know that you need to upgrade for the $100, but the sauces and the concoctions for the normal level was worth it. We sat at the counter and really enjoyed it. The space itself is gorgeous, and the food is out of this world. We did get some rolls as well, and while we liked the matcha roll recommendation, it didn't compare to the yellow tale. If we were to come back, we would order one Omakase, some nigiri, two rolls, and an appetizer which would be plenty for two people. I'm going to be honest, this was probably my 4th or 5th visit to Sushi Lab and probably my last. The quality of the food at Sushi Lab has gone down drastically since my first visit around 2021, the most upsetting part is the pre-sliced fish. Nothing breaks my heart more than seeing my omakase chef retrieve pre-sliced fish from the fridge Now back to the review, my fiancé and I came here for Winter 2024 Restaurant Week and enjoyed the pre fixe menu. Overall I was impressed with the food selection that was offered for $60pp, the appetizer selection included bluefin tuna tartare and salmon belly and the entrees included an 8 piece omakase. The omakase was very good, but not life changing. I was impressed that they gave us pieces like scallop and wagyu for the price, but the experience just felt dull and impersonal. There was truly no interaction with our chef or our food, it felt like a normal sushi dinner and not a true omakase experience. The dessert is why I knocked off 2 stars, the matcha creme brûlée was sticky and almost gelatinous(??) the cheesecake was nothing amazing either, it was very forgettable. My advice would be to skip the dessert or maybe ask if you can substitute it for another nigiri or something LOL Overall, it's a beautiful restaurant with yummy flavor combinations, just not the most authentic or personal of omakase experiences. read more

First time trying omakase and had a wonderful experience here at sushilab from setting, to food, to service everything was great! We sat at the chef's table so we can observe how the sushi is done and we'd know what we were given. We tried their 15 course omakase and had the pleasure of being served by Chef Luke who prepared all these fresh, beautiful and delicious sushi for us. Every piece was tasty and we enjoyed every single one even though we cant remember the names anymore lol it was hard to pick a favorite! We were also served by Inka (i hope i got her name right) who was such a sweetheart! From taking a video for us, giving us tips on how best to enjoy the sushi and even giving us complimentary champagne to celebrate our anniversary! we had such a memorable time and enjoyed every minute we were there. All the staff we encountered that day were pleasant which really gave a good impression and plus the setting is just beautiful as you can see from the photos! We dined here right before a Broadway Show, Waiting for Godot. We were excited to prelude the evening at a rooftop sushi bar next to the Haven Rooftop, which I've frequently visited when I worked in the neighborhood. Unfortunately, the SLR wasn't as good as I anticipated. I may have overhyped it in my mind. I asked the waitress for a suggestion, and she pointed to the Crunchy Matcha Roll, which she introduced as a popular choice. It came in eight pieces, with probably one shrimp used in the entire roll. I started with the Taro chip with guacamole, which was fine. When I tried to ask the waitress if I could select something else, she said that what I wanted was in the roll I ordered. I just wanted a plain shrimp tempura roll, but that's when she said that my roll contained those ingredients. Therefore, I settled for it, scraped off the crab topping, and requested some spicy mayo to make it more palatable. My friend had the wagyu burger, and I didn't even ask him if he enjoyed it. He was so busy telling me I got gaslighted into eating what I ordered. I have no complaints about the service; our waitress was respectful and did her job, and the maitre d' walked around asking if we needed anything. I'm a little tepid about this place. Btw, to add insult to injury, Waiting for Godot was terrible. It was an all-around great night. Hahaha. read more

We were running very late for our reservation but we called ahead to let them know. They were so accommodating and still let us in! You enter the hotel lobby, check in and they'll guide you to the elevator. Once you get off the elevator, go up two flights of stairs and you'll reach the rooftop! Food: + Baked Crab Tacos: (blue crab, masago, avocado in a wonton chip taco)- I love how they used real blue crab instead of imitation crab. The wonton chip taco gave it a nice crunch which I enjoyed +Kanzuri Tuna Tacos: (jicama, chives, jalapeño, tuna in a wonton chip taco)- This taco would have tasted so much better if it had a tad bit more sauce to it, maybe more spicy mayo or eel sauce. The tuna was a bit bland and was lacking flavor. + Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice: (spicy tuna, wasabi caviar, sweet soy on top of crispy rice)- Delicious! I always have to get spicy tuna crispy rice if it's on the menu. This was honestly one of my fave dish here. The crispy rice had a nice crisp to it and the tuna was well balanced. + Taro Chips: ( pomegranate guacamole, cinnamon)- Taro chips were thin and crispy. I honestly was not expecting guacamole since we only ordered this for my aunt. Not too bad but I wouldn't get it again. + Matcha Crunch Roll: (spicy baked crab, shrimp tempura, avocado, matcha covered rice pearls)- I'm a huge matcha fan and also love crunch rolls so we needed to get this. I love the matcha covered rice pearls since it gave it a nice touch to the rolls. Must get! + Washugyu Beef Roll: (American waygu, shrimp tempura, avocado, crab, yakiniku miso, chives)- This roll was delicious. Such a crowd favorite between me, my cousin and uncle! This place was amazing!!! My friends and I came here after work for some dinner/drinks. The rooftop is very cute and the hallways to get there feel fancy/exclusive. Their menu items and drinks are very unique. We ended up doing family style because there were so many items we wanted to try. We got the Bluefin Toro Tartare, Tuna Lover Roll, Matcha Crunch Roll, Washugyu Beef Roll and a classic salmon roll (not on menu, we just requested it). We loved everything!! My favorite was the Tuna Lover Roll (loved the jalapeno kick), but the wagyu was also very unique and nicely flavored. Midtown is tough. It caters to a predominantly tourist based customer, and maybe a few office /business people and the occasional theater patron. Which we happen to be this time. We chose it for the convenient location and appealing menu. Customer service was great, from being greeted at check in to the host seating us and continued during service which was short as we had a play to catch. The rolls seemed unique but fell short a little for me. They were smaller in size for "special rolls" and the matcha crunch was kind of gimmick even tho I enjoyed the taste and it was good, just didn't feel very unique or outstanding. Overall the sushi was decent and met the needs of a quick, tasty sushi dinner. We ordered 3 of them, no apps as we didn't have time. The drinks were the most disappointing. My espresso martini just tasted like sweet espresso liquor and the mule was sticky and sweet too. We would have gotten another round if they had been good. Unintentionally my family came here for dinner to celebrate my mom's bday. Initially the plan was to go to Haven rooftop, but it fell through. I am grateful that this restaurant had availability and was able to accomodate us. We decided to order various items from the menu. We ordered baked crab taco, kanzuri tuna taco, tuna tataki salad, dynamite shrimp, spicy tuna crispy rice, truffle shrimp pasta, spicy tuna tartare roll, matcha crunch roll and washygyu beef roll. The foods were overall good. I personally wouldn't order spicy tuna crispy roll because it was a lot of rice. We had the option of choosing creme brulee or NY cheesecake as a small birthday dessert. We went with creme brulee for my mom and it was sweet and tasty. The ambiance is nice lovely here. The service was good. But it was hot as Hades up there. It looks like they put sheers and a beautifully woven camouflage to create a tent like effect. They have these lovely wicker into light lamp shades hanging over our heads. I think the reason it's so hot is because these years are trapping the heat inside. They have tons of fans blowing but it's not doing the job of cooling me down. I ordered the hand rolls scalloped mushrooms and the Toro rice cracker rice cracker $14 The server said it was the belly of the tuna giving it more flavor. It was $6 more than the regular tuna hand roll. So you know how a tuna so you know how hand roll sushi works? It's wrapped in a funnel shape. Well I have to say the inside was very tasty but it really was a pain in the ass when I tried to pull it apart and the seaweed is wrapped in okay didn't let go. It's like squeezing that icing out of the bag funnel into your mouth and the seaweed remained. I'm thinking and it might I had a lot to do with the moisture from the food inside. I should have got hand cut sushi rolls. I'm ordering the honey soy glazed wings to go. I'm hot and I don't feel like chomping down and licking my fingers in front of all these people. read more

So my son loves California rolls so I thought Oh i should take him here because California rolls is sushi but here they don't have that then he wanted rice but they don't have that either. Then for my newborn baby i have her in the stroller and they told us that we had to take the elevator then 2 flights of stairs. As well as the variety of food was not that large then my third child looked at the menu and said that she wanted something then we asked for it and said that they did not serve that anymore. So then the workers did not be as kid friendly after my second daughter politely told them that she didn't want that and the her into getting it and i spent money for something she did not eat. I had wanted to go a year ago but you know how it goes sometimes when you travel... your schedule doesn't end up matching your plans! The rooftop is located in the cool and sleek Sanctuary hotel. Just another 5-star review. But, it is well deserved. So, I'm the type that would prefer to sit at the chef counter, aka. bar, even though tables might be more comfy (but what do I know? Never wanted to sit at tables.) The experience happens at the sushi bar. The chef tells me about each piece, what's in it and all. And, get this - he remembers us! After 6 months (January-July) and he recognizes us. So, yes, we got the best of all the best. I don't live in NYC so my visits are sporadic but the chef made it awesome. Decided to try out sushi lab as it's been on my list for awhile and they were doing restaurant week, so why not before a Broadway show?! The restaurant is clearly on top and yes you may be confused on finding it but look for the doors I've attached and people are waiting to guide you the way. Getting to the restaurant is bit of a trip, they walk you down some hallways and tell you to take an elevator but then have to walk passed hotel rooms and then step flights up. They definitely give you a little detour to work up your appetite even more lol The roof top is beautifully designed and was half full for a Wesley Thursday evening. We decided to sit at the chef's table so we can witness them work their magic. We were attended to efficiently, chose our three items for restaurant week and enjoyed the show of the chef's. The items can out in a reasonable amount of time, a bit rushed at the end for dessert, as I was not even done with my fries and they were were already giving me my dessert, not a fan of feeling a bit rushed. Although, the pork belly was good just don't think that type of salmon is for me lol the sanwhich was pretty good too with a kick of spice! The matcha crème brûlée was amazing! This Sushi Lab is located on the rooftop a hotel so it has a bit of a "speakeasy" vibe to it with a special check-in counter and the maze-like means to get to it. Since it was on the rooftop, we had to take the elevator and then walk up an additional couple of flights. Not as accessible for those that might need that so it is something to note. I personally had an enjoyable omakase experience with 3 of my girl friends. We had a first seating so there was no wait. Our server was super sweet and accommodating. She explained each piece and there was a nice break between each course. The rooftop was a little chilly as we went in late fall, but they had space heaters so we were comfortable. I won't go through every piece, but I would say that the pieces all tasted fresh and my favorite was the A5 wagyu with the crispy rice - right at the end before the hand roll. Overall, The pieces were a little small and for the price I was surprised I wasn't full, but I had a nice time with my friends and the service was nice. I would potentially try this place again, but we're really looking forward to their chemistry room for dinner at some point. Small tip: Bathrooms in the hotel lobby are more comfortable than the ones on the rooftop :) read more

We got the Lab Experiment omakase ("15 signature courses - with some of the finest ingredients like fresh truffle, wagyu, and caviar"), which is what our waitress recommended. She said that the "Chef's Selection" omakase wouldn't be enough alone and we'd probably have to order some appetizers on the side. The food was great -- it was creative yet simple in that the flavors were not overpowering. We tasted truffle in 3 courses. They had caviar in 2 of the courses and wagyu in only 1 course, which was the wagyu on top of toasted sticky rice piece. They did use uni in a lot of courses though (~3-4 courses). Some notable dishes include the scallop nigiri with truffle, tuna and uni on top of fried oyster, fatty tuna nigiri topped with caviar, the fried unagi handroll, half a soft-shell crab, and tuna and uni on top of toast. The only thing I didn't like was the rice -- it was too overcooked for my liking. Although it was seasoned well (mixed with some vinegar sauce), it was very mushy, and took away from the texture of each piece. The rice downgraded the whole meal for me, making me feel like the omakase meal wasn't worth the price. The wagyu on top of sticky rice was my least favorite because the texture was just all mush. To me, it tasted like a plain rice ball with some flavor from the wagyu, but my partner really liked it and thought the texture was good. Overall, I had a good experience and satisfying meal. Servers were attentive and friendly, and the rooftop dining environment is really pleasant. I'd return mainly because I like the ambiance, and the food isn't bad, but I wouldn't go out of my way to try their omakase again, especially since it seems like from reading some other reviews that the rice being overcooked wasn't just a one-off thing. read more
