Visiting family in Vancouver, they live in nanaimo and we were craving Japanese food. We wanted something local, casual, and reasonably priced. Hands down the best thing we ordered was the salmon sashimi. The salmon tasted fresh and came in thick, tender slices. Clean flavor, super fresh, and easily the highlight of the meal. We got a few rolls, dragon roll being a classic hard to go wrong with. Was satisfying sweet-savory combo. Reliable and tasty. The drunken tiger roll pleasantly surprised me, it was flavorful, fun, and definitely worth getting if you want something a little different. The kentucky roll was more of a miss for me. The seaweed was a bit tough and the deep-fried tuna inside felt dry and not very fresh. I'd probably skip this one next time. They seemed really short-staffed. There was only one server covering the entire restaurant though there were three chefs. Because of that, the food took a little longer than we expected, but it wasn't terrible. In the area for a tournament, needed lunch and stopped by Sushi Nanaimo. I was seated immediately and tea was promptly placed in front of me. Those are positives. I had looked at the menu beforehand and opted for the Roll Combo. At $14.25 it is good value sushi and includes a California Roll, Dynamite Roll, 1/2 Tuna Roll and 1/2 Salmon Roll. The presentation was nice but I did not enjoy the dynamite roll as the prawn tempura was so small and was easily overpowered by the imitation crab. There was no issue with the service. It was a positive food experience but I have no plans to return given the abundance of sushi establishments in the area. read more

The prawn tempura had maybe 1/5 of a prawn inside. Our server ignored us the entire time. I even waved at her and made eye contact cuz we needed to leave and she looked at me, then went to the iPad. It includes miso soup, salad, agedashi tofu, tempura, sunomono, teriyaki chicken, yaki soba, dynamite or house roll, 5 pcs nigiri and 10 pcs sashimi. It was more than enough to share. In this recent visit we noticed the yakisoba was extremely salty. We told the staff and they were very appreciative of our feedback and remade the dish for us. Can't believe I never tried this place all these years. I think I have a new go-to for mid end sushi. Don't let the rundown exterior fool you. Parking is available in the nice large East Village lot (Franklin and Kamloops). The entrance is raised several steps with no ramps. Not wheelchair accessible. The dining area looks a bit like something out of an Asian village, with lots of wooden bits. Staff are friendly and very helpful. I decided to splurge and go for the Nana sushi & sashimi bento box. This thing is epic. I just sat and stared at at the amount of food this thing includes. Salad, noodles, agedeshi tofu, beef teriyaki (solid slices, not the cheap shredded stuff) (chicken option as well), tempura, miso soup, sunimono, 10 pieces of sashimi, 5 pieces of nigiri, and 6 pieces of house/dynamite roll. See photo. Personally I could barely finish the thing, but I decided to be strong and succeed. The waitress was impressed, and mentioned that most people have to take some home. Came here with a friend around 3 pm, and it was pretty quiet and slow, but it was still a nice experience. :) Service was very friendly and attentive throughout the whole dining experience. We continually got our water refilled and checked up on, and even though my friend and I stayed there for quite a long while chatting, they were still very friendly and nice. We got two items and honestly, the portions were so big, it was more than filling. Great value for the price! The restaurant itself was fairly small but very comfortable. The decor was simple and cute and the bathrooms were very clean. I think this is a great place if you're craving some sushi for lunch! read more

Me and my family has arrived at about 4:40pm on February 26th of this year. There was only one server as usual for that time of the day. We ended up seating ourselves. The waitress brought us over menus then went back to settle bills with another table that was talking loud. We waiting about less than 5-10 mins. No tea was brought to us and the waitress didn't come by to take our orders. We walked out were to another Japanese restaurant across the street. We were served right away and fast service. Sushi Nanaimo needs to have more waiters and waitresses working at all times. Also don't order the chicken katsu at sushi Nanaimo. It's overcooked and more batter than chicken. Ordered the spider roll, awesome roll, prawn and shrimp tempura, yam roll, spicy Salmon roll, chicken don and Unagi don. I would reorder the spicy Salmon roll, tempura, Unagi don and awesome roll. A hot summer night and in need of some sushi this one has been on my mind a very longtime due to being in the hood. I always wondered how this 'house' was as from word of mouth I heard this was the best one around Hastings-Sunrise, and I am happy to say I agree and can report back that I had a pleasant time here. First off, this one is Korean run, and you always know you get some 'designer' style rolls like the gangster roll... no, I did not have this, but we did order their rendition of the 'Awesome Roll' topped with fish flakes. I thought that other restaurant (holic) was the only one with this... guess this proves otherwise. Also ordered a BC roll combo which came with 2 salmon, 1 tuna and 1 ebi nigiri. All the food came in very long plates, definitely the 'instagram' worthy in presentation and shot with your camera/smartphone... but how were they really? I can say there is no over-rice in terms of rolls here, where everything is very well balanced, and the other thing... all the rolls held their form, where there was very little loose rice, so the sushi masters behind the counter are doing it right. I found their BC roll quite well done due to the amount of salmon skin and the crispyness from it being panfried. It was different that they had imitation crab meat, which wasn't bad. I think next time I will order the Awesome roll with the deep fried yam bits next time, but the fish flakes do make a difference. The nigiri pieces were all done well with nice pieces of protein perfectly arranged on top and the last part.. they gave enough wasabi and ginger slices on both plates. The service was on point, where my tea was topped up quite well. The food never took long to come, and we were there while the restaurant was packed for their dinner run. This place also works like a factory, as you see the people working here zipping around handling the rush of people in here, and take-out. It took me a long time to get out here, I would definitely recommend this place for value if you want sushi in the hood. Thought I would try and different sushi place and was not disappointed here. I ordered to take out and the servers were friendly and quite fast. The chicken karaage and appetizer tempura was light and crispy. The Nana Sashimi and sushi box for $26 was a lot and I like the varieties it had. It was definitely good for two. Another great point is the extensive menu and reasonable prices. The only down side is that it is only street parking, however it is free and not metered so I'm still happy about it. read more

Love the size of their sushi rolls and their value! They have an extensive list of sushi rolls to choose from including fun ones like the Grouse Mountain Roll and Gangster Roll. Their rolls and sushi in general are cheaper than at a similar restaurant with similar food. I didn't quite enjoy their sashimi, however. I'm not sure if it's about actually about freshness, but the majority of the fish in the Assorted sashimi platter just tasted a bit fishy and not very tasty. Would come back for their rolls though! Another day, another sushi spot. Sushi Nanaimo is the latest one for me to try with the Van crew. This is a popular place and prices are very reasonable. Apparently, this place is normally crazy busy so most people prefer to do takeout. We hit the jackpot and came on a rather slow Tuesday night. The menu is massive. Lunch boxes (11:00am - 4:00pm) look like a good deal. Lots of cheap combination rolls too. There's a card on the table promoting their special rolls. Service is solid and they constantly come by to refill your hot tea and water. Food came out impressively fast. - 4x toro nigiri ($1.50 each) and saba nigiri ($1.25 each). Both types were fresh and sooooo cheap! - Red roll ($6.25) - this is M's favourite. He always orders this one. - Deep fried roll ($4.25) - Alaska roll ($4.25) - avocado and salmon. They put this miso garlic sauce on top that's delicious. - Dynamite roll ($4.25) - prawn tempura and masago. - Crazy boy roll ($6.25) - deep fried California roll with spicy mayo and unagi sauce. - Spicy salmon combo ($9.95) - spicy salmon roll, negitoro ($0.70 to substitute) and spicy salmon sashimi. FANTASTIC spot! I had the spicy salmon platter and split the assorted tempura with a friend (who had the assorted maki-sashimi combo). Our food arrived in a reasonable time frame and it was indeed high quality. Dilligent, attentive service. I had a feeling several members of the service and kitchen staff were Korean as they played KPop through the pipes...and I LOVE BTS! I was only a bit peeved that they gave us takeout menus to order from and gave us soy sauce packets even though we were sitting in with my trying to reduce the landfill waste. But I understand it was an anti-COVID measure. Great place and I have now patronized twice...it has become my now-favorite sushi spot! read more

My girlfriend and I totally wilded out here for our hangover meal in the AM a few weeks ago. She lives just down the street from Sushi Nanaimo so we dragged ourselves here to try and feel better. I loved the sushi. I could not BELIEVE the portion sizes here. I was in sushi heaven. These rolls were the size of my head, seriously. I loved the Volcano Roll the most! But we tried so many rolls and they were all delicious. I also had some Veggie Gyoza which is something I've never had before in my life and loved. I want Edmonton to offer vegetarian gyoza! That is something I definitely miss about being a meat-eater (not that I would go back). They also walk around and refill your green tea. I was very energized after eating here. There are many types of rolls here and they are pretty nice. I had the grouse mountain roll. It is actually deep fried which is not stated in the menu. I will like it better if it is not fried. The oil is just greasy. The uni handroll is so good though. Fresh uni which is important. 2 stars because the service was abysmal. We waited a long time for everything except the food. Waited for someone to seat us. Then waited for someone to take our order. The sushi chefs did not communicate to the servers we were there. They did not even acknowledge us even though they saw us. So we were there standing, waiting, thinking if maybe they were closed in the afternoon. We got there around 4pm and there were a few tables finishing up their meals. We saw someone counting money at the till. Again she saw us but did not acknowledge our presence or told people in the kitchen we were there. After a while then someone finally emerged and gave us a table. Then it was a long wait again for a server to take our order. This place is great! We come here every time we visit Vancouver. The food is always fresh and it comes out super fast. We like to order a party tray and then add other items. Besides sushi and sashimi, the donburi is pretty tasty too! My favorites are the Gangster roll and BC roll. I ordered the Nanaimo roll which was good (spicy salmon I think) with fried yam bits on top with some spicy mayo (this was pretty good and for $7, totally worth it). The chopped scallop cone for $3 was meh (I've had better). I asked for less rice, and I still ended up with leaving some more rice out. Similar to sushi garden style, Sushi Nanaimo is a small korean style sushi place with cheap rolls, large portions and tasty food. My family came here and although it was crowded, we iddnt have to wait long and ordered the spicy salmon combo with alaska roll instead of kappa, takoyaki, red roll (chopped scallop topped with spicy tuna), house roll and smoked salmon cream cheese roll. all were a bit heavy on the rice but these rolls hit all the right notes anyways. My favourite of course was the spicy salmon sashimi because of that gochugang glaze while the red roll and smoked salmon cream cheese roll are not available at sushi garden so having the option for some "special rolls" is great! The takoyaki was standard with a small amount of octopus but plenty of delicious bonito flakes on top! Overall, the fish itself is not of amazing quality but the cheap prices and filling rolls make it a good place for sushi cravings. read more

We were in rush and wanted to eat something quickly in the neighbourhood. Most of the restaurants that we wanted to visit were closed on Family Day. We came to this Japanese restaurant. When we first stepped into the restaurant, the ambiance was okay. A lot of tables were packed and they were very close to each other. Customers (who did not know each other) sat very close to others. We could hear the conversations next to us and we could see what other customers were ordering and eating. We felt this restaurant was not clean. Fortunately we didn't feel sick after lunch. We got a table right away. A server greeted us and brought us tea and gave us a menu. Their menu had a wide selection of food. Their prices were affordable. Probably it was the reason why this restaurant was highly rated and many customers came here for Japanese food. We ordered Maki party tray (42 pieces), tuna and salmon sashimi (9 pieces) and beef yaki udon. All of them were okay but not great. We had way better Japanese food somewhere else in Vancouver and the price point was reasonable and average. The quality of food and environment were better than Sushi Nanaimo. We probably wouldn't come back here in the near future. read more

This was normally my go to sushi place whenever my family were craving for dinner. We've ate in and ordered takeout many times now but today was our first takeout order during Covid. I'm not sure if anything had changed with the staff but I noticed that our order wasn't prepared with the same care as before. I normally take photos of my food (yes I'm that person) but this time around I didnt want to because it wasn't presented nicely. It was surprising that I had to look at photos of my previous order to compare. There was clearly a difference in the presentation and preparation. Alaska roll - I thought they reduced their portion size because the rolls were a lot smaller and they had clumped all of them together even tho the container had a lot more room. Because all the rolls were attached to each other from all sides, pieces of rice kept coming apart whenever we would pick up a piece. It could be that it wasn't prepared well and it was already going to fall apart but its hard to say. Volcano roll - one of my favourite rolls that I haven't had in a while. The taste was ok but usually they add most of the sauce on the bottom and a little on top of the rolls. This time around most of the rolls were drenched in sauce and was quite soggy by the time we drove home. Salmon sashimi - good portion, same as always. Sunset roll - I remember really liking it the first time I tried it but this time around it was just ok? Roll was kind of falling a part as well. Kind of disappointed this time around. It has been roughly a year since I have dined at Sushi Nanaimo so I figure an update is needed. If you are the type that loves huge portions at reasonable prices, this is the place to go! I typically go for the sashimi boat since it was a great variety of sashimi (sweet shrimp, salmon, surf clam and mackerel to name a few) and is never disappointing. We decided to also order an uni sashimi plate and a salmon avocado roll this time around. Personally I thought the uni wasn't great here since it tasted off. I probably won't order uni here again. The salmon avocado roll was generous and I like that the rice was seasoned lightly. For roughly $4 this roll was a deal. Its a great place for those who want huge portions on a budget. read more

Just one of the typical Korean owned Japanese restaurant. Their menu is same as Sushi Garden and I'm not sure if it's owned by the same person. Service was fast. The taste was good but didn't really stand out. It reminded me of food from Sushi Garden and Sushi California. I got Sashimi and Sushi combo for $8.95. Portion was big enough for one person. Didn't know the combo came with salad and miso soup during lunch. That was good to know. Salad was fresh and delicious. It was quite satisfying. However I wouldn't go down to Hastings for sushi since I can find sushi places much closer within my vicinity. Anyways I don't mind giving 4 stars. Always came to Sushi Nanaimo after a long day at the PNE, not this year though, nonetheless when I'm in the area I'm always craving sushi from this place! I came here approx. 3 months ago, ordered a teriyaki box with chicken teriyaki, had a great portion to value to freshness balance for a $13 lunch box. Came again recently and got the same box with beef teriyaki instead, and thought they've significantly downsized the portions over the course of only a few short months. The dynamite roll was slightly sloppier than before, the chicken karage was also extremely dry, one side was even tough to the point that it really took effort to bite into, with dried strands pulling through my front teeth. Overall, still a decent quick meal, enjoyed the variety of items that come with the lunch box, but slightly disappointed in the experience considering the change in quality was in just a few months. Will probably try the order again another day hoping for the best. 3.5 stars this visit. read more
