Always came to Sushi Nanaimo after a long day at the PNE, not this year though, nonetheless when I'm in the area I'm always craving sushi from this place! I came here approx. 3 months ago, ordered a teriyaki box with chicken teriyaki, had a great portion to value to freshness balance for a $13 lunch box. Came again recently and got the same box with beef teriyaki instead, and thought they've significantly downsized the portions over the course of only a few short months. The dynamite roll was slightly sloppier than before, the chicken karage was also extremely dry, one side was even tough to the point that it really took effort to bite into, with dried strands pulling through my front teeth. Overall, still a decent quick meal, enjoyed the variety of items that come with the lunch box, but slightly disappointed in the experience considering the change in quality was in just a few months. My family used to go here all the time, but in the last year the quality of food has gone down. We stopped going earlier in the year and just happened to decide on going back last night. It was an okay experience but not the greatest. We manage to get in at a good time and got a seat immediately. It was very noticeable that there's likely been a chance of ownership. There's a new menu and it's very apparent that this place is essentially a SushiHolic in disguise. The list of items on the menu, especially the specialty rolls, pretty much match what is offered at SushiHolic locations. I do like having the fancier chopsticks instead of the paper but it's a very minor thing. The location is still quite crowded and is meant to be a 'eat fast and leave' kind of restaurant. Food was fine for the most part. Salmon and tuna sashimi were solid. We ordered a lot of rolls including the Canuck and Rainbow roll. Nothing tasted egregiously poor but nothing was amazing. However, the portion sizes for the food was very inconsistent among the orders. The Canuck roll had 8 evenly split pieces but then had 2 giant pieces for some inexplicable reason. The same happened with the smokey yam and smoked salmon rolls. It just seemed incredibly lazy for a place that was not as packed as it used to be. There's nothing wrong with Sushi Nanaimo, it's a perfectly fine sushi place to stop by and have a meal. My go-to items here have always been the Nanaimo and Awesome rolls. for whatever reason, other sushi places that try to do similar items don't seem to get it as good as this place. The Nanaimo roll is essentially a spicy tuna roll with yam/potato chips sprinkled generously on top. The roll is finished with a spicy mayo and what tastes like a teriyaki sauce. The sauces give it a really good kick, and the yam chips are crunchy enough to complement the roll. The Awesome roll is served with either the yam chips or fish flakes - I got both today and they were both very good. The roll is a California roll with a little bit of salmon on top. Like the Nanaimo roll, it is finished with yam/potato chips, or fish flakes. The roll is also finished with a spicy mayo/teriyaki sauce which gives the roll a good kick. If you have to choose one, I'd choose the Awesome roll with the yam chips. Dinner at the place is usually packed and the dining area isn't very big. I'd say to come earlier if possible so you don't have to feel like sardines while eating. From previous experience, the nigiri here isn't that great, but the prawn tempuras were pretty spot on. Overall, this is a solid go-to sushi restaurant for me. read more

Been going here since I was a kid but there was a change in owner and things have gone down hill. Extremely disappointed with what has happened to my family at this restaurant recently. With Covid, we understand limiting seats to 6 people per table. We had 7 and requested for two tables. Keep in mind, we are from the same household and we ourselves requested to split two tables. They did not allow this at all and would not seat us separately. It did not make any sense to me especially if they're allowing others to sit together up to 6 who may also not be from the same house hold and are continuously letting others come in no problem. Disappointed by this incident and not coming back anymore. Every other restaurant we have went has understood and accommodated two tables no problem. However when it came to Sushi Nanaimo, it was unacceptable and they would not seat us. read more

This place has consistently deliver fresher sashimis than other japanese fusion restaurants. They have quite a bit of seating but would not recommend group of more than 6 unless you are okay splitting to two tables. My favourite dish here is definitely the spicy salmon sashimi, crazy girl roll, and agedashi tofu. The lunch box has great value (every day of the week 11am-4pm). Oh my god this place is AMAZING. Having been born in Seattle and moved to Los Angeles, we have plenty of good sushi, but nothing compares to the sheer quality and value that Sushi Nanaimo offers. Located on the corner of Nanaimo street, this little Sushi shop has a really cute atmosphere and is decorated with a wooden interior that gives off an authentic feeling. Despite coming in at 1pm, this place was packed and we had to wait twenty minutes before being seated. I ordered the Chirashi bowl, which came in an enormous bowl. The chirashi bowl was a good mix of tuna, salmon, octopus, and eel. The only complaint that I have with the chirashi bowl is that there was too much rice, which can get a little bit overwhelming. My friends all ordered the lunch combos, which came with a side salad and miso soup. We also ordered the spicy salmon sashimi, which was absolutely delicious. Sushi Nanaimo is a rare breed. It strikes the perfect balance between quality and price. I'm definitely going to come here again the next time I come to Vancouver. read more

Sushi Nanaimo almost feels like a mere image of Sushi Garden on Kingsway. In fact, I don't know if there's truth in the following but I did hear a table next to us say that Sushi Nanaimo is a sister restaurant of Sushi Garden. Don't quote me on that. I wasn't eaves dropping either but the tables are so close to each other that I can easily tap my neighbor on the shoulder without any effort. Sushi Nanaimo's menu is pretty extensive. You can easily get lost looking at it because everything sounds appealing. I decided to veer away from all the crazy (maki) rolls and just stick the basic. Nigiri, sashimi, and handrolls (Canadians call them "cone"). Why I can't give Sushi Nanaimo a full five stars? It's because the first three items I attempted to order was sold out. This included the wild salmon sashimi, the red fin ahi tuna sashimi, and the bbq Hamachi gama. Fortunately, they did have the fatty tuna belly (toro) sashimi so I had an order of that instead. You can get half orders for sashimi except on the assorted sashimi which is awesome. This way you're not stuck with an entire order to waste that stomach space. The toro was indeed fatty, melts in your mouth, and fresh. The sunomono is very refreshing. Be prepared for a nice, tangy, and chilled impact on your taste buds. A perfect petite sized starter to the meal. The takoyaki octopus balls are rich and catchy but too bad the meat inside is a bit wee sized. The chopped scallop cone and sushi is what I really relished. There's nothing like it and down south here in the states, I rarely see them use chopped scallop. We ordered a few of these in sushi form. I couldn't get enough of it, so I had to tact on a cone version of it at the end. They definitely aren't stingy with the amount of scallop they use. If you want it spicy, they'll spray it down with some of that infamous Sriracha sauce. Another outstanding sushi I will miss is the tobiko (masago/smelt eggs) with a quail egg poached right in the top middle. Don't dip too much soy sauce with this one because it's already jam packed with sodium but its bomb.com. As I stated before, there's something for everyone on their big menu. Everything from udon noodles to cooked food, plenty of appetizers, and of course the never ending sushi and rolls. Prices are quite fair. Nigiri are sold by the piece, not a pair. Two people came out to $42 before tip. I felt like if I ate the same amount in Los Angeles, it would've have easily been double that amount. I think they have a stamp card which I wasn't offered one for returning customers. I also liked how fast the food came out too. There's free parking a block away, just cut through the side alley and you'll see a big open lot that actually says "free parking brought to you by the neighboring businesses." Brilliant. Prices are very good for the amount of food you get and how nicely they plate everything if you're eating in. Sushi Nanaimo is my go-to place for sushi, even though they raised their prices a couple months ago (sad face!). It is definitely still a lot more affordable in comparison to other sushi restaurants. Maybe I may be a little bias with this review, but there's reasons why this is my go-to! I love their service here. It's fast and friendly. When you first walk into the restaurant, you are greeted immediately and if it's busy, you will be asked for your name to reserve a spot. The atmosphere is adorable, and I dig the Korean music they play! The fish doesn't leave a weird, fishy aftertaste, so you know the fish is fresh. The rolls are unique, but delicious. I highly recommend the Awesome roll & the Alaska roll! Bonus: if you order a combo before 4PM, you get free miso soup and a side salad and 10% if you do takeout. Out of all the sushi joints within the Hastings and Nanaimo area (there's tons), Sushi Nanaimo might be my favourite out of all. It's in a great little location on the main corner of the street with tons of free parking around the neighbourhood. Depending on the time you go, I have seen some lineups forming that may cause you to wait anywhere 10-20 minutes. Inside, it's decor is simple, bright, and clean. Due to its size, tables tend to be crammed together and don't be surprised if your sitting next to another party. Service was okay. Took them a little long to get to us, but once our order was taken, the food came quickly with our miso soups coming right off the bat. This is a good place if your looking for decent budget sushi at a low cost. For lunch, they have 5 different bento box options. I got box A ($8.95) which included chicken or beef teriyaki, salad, 2 gyozas, 4 California rolls, and assorted tempura. It was really filling, however the California rolls were whatever. Finally.. my first 5 star review! I have been completely uninspired by my regular sushi spots downtown. So much so that I didn't have much enthusiasm for a sushi lunch-date. You all know the drill.. another boy another mediocre sushi spot. So I have to say this place caught me completely off guard. Absolutely the most unexpected amazing sushi experience on Hastings! Everything from how the place is run to the creativity on the menu shows me that the owners really poured some love and pride into this place. The servers are nice, the place is clean and the dishes have little gold sparkles in them. But... MOST IMPORTANTLY, the sushi here actually has soul. Must trys are the AWESOME ROLL and RED DRAGON ROLL. I am used to paying about 10$ for a speciality roll.. Here they are about 7$ and huge! Really creative flavours and excellent presentation. They also seemed to be very interactive with their customers. I stuck with nigiri and sashimi cause I'm not really a roll type of girl. The toro and salmon nigiri both tasted fresh. Nice and buttery! Some of the toro pieces were more fatty than others but nonetheless still really satisfying. We also ordered hamachi, uni, scallop and some more items. We even came back a second time within a few days for a little snack before we had to fly back home to OC. I don't know why it took me so long to finally get out to Nanaimo Sushi, but I am glad it happened. Last Saturday my friends and I visited Sushi Nanaimo in Vancouver which is located on Nanaimo and East Hastings Street. The place was fully packed when we arrived there around 7pm. Their food was pretty much the same as Sushi Garden and Sushi California which are all owned by Koreans. Wouldn't be an option for someone looking for authentic Japanese, but maybe good place for having decent sushi at affordable prices and generous portions. After a few minutes we ordered, our rolls started coming even though the restaurant seemed really busy. Their service was so fast so that we started thinking their rolls might be pre-made. Hope not, but the rolls actually came out before our sashimi and nigiri. Anyways back to our first dish, Nanaimo Roll ($6.5) consisted of spicy tuna, cucumbers inside, topped with sweet potato flakes, drizzled with spicy mayo and unagi sauce. It was a bit spicy but not too much. The tempura bits gave a nice crunchy texture. Everyone seemed to love this roll the best (2.5/5.0). Red Roll ($5.95) had chopped scallop, cucumbers and topped with spicy salmon. Pretty simple but not plain taste (3.0/5.0). Sushi Nanaimo's Awesome Roll ($6.95) is not different from any other Korean-owned sushi restaurants. It's a California Roll wrapped with baked salmon, masago and lots of yam fries on top. Same as other rolls, they used spicy mayo and unagi sauce (3.0/5.0). Dragon Roll ($7.95) was my favourite. Sorry for the poor quality picture, but the roll looked way better and appetizing. Pretty much a California Roll wrapped with avocado and huge chunks of unagi (BBQ Eel), and topped with bonito, tobiko, spicy mayo & unagi sauce (3.5/5.0). Yum! Salmon Sashimi ($8.95) came out really late when we almost finished all the rolls above. Although salmon looked a bit mushy from its appearance, it was pretty fresh and tasty. But I thought it needs better sashimi cutting skills still (3.0/5.0). I usually don't like to order Spicy Salmon Sashimi ($9.95) as I can't tell how fresh the sashimi because of the strong spicy sauce. But some of my friends wanted to try so we got it. The sauce was spicier than I expected, but still good. Good to have a few pieces while eating huge chunks of sushi rolls (3.0/5.0). It took a long time to get our nigiri sushi. 10 pcs Toro Nigiri ($1.30), 2 pcs Hamachi Nigiri ($2.00) and 1 pc Tobiko with Quail Egg Nigiri ($1.60). As I mentioned earlier, they need better sashimi knife skills... The toro looked really poor :(.. Also, each piece had too much sushi rice which was a bit gluey and gummy. Hamachi didn't have that distinct burgundy colour on the outside. The taste was below average (1.0/5.0). Six of us were pretty full and the bill costed only $75.86. Really cheap sushi! With so many sushi restaurants in Vancouver it's so easy to have great or terrible sushi experiences. Sushi Nanaimo is now my new favourite go-to sushi restaurant. Ingredients are fresh and the food is delicious! Ordered miso soup, gomae, gyoza, spicy tempura tuna roll, chopped scallop roll and the soft shell crab roll and everything was amazing. And the best part. it was only $30 including tip for the 2 of us and all this food. I'd actually give this place a 4.5 just b/c of the noise level. Sure it's great when you enter and leave and they ALL great you at the same time. BUT this place is always packed and people are constantly coming in and out of the restaurant; very hard to have a conversation. And be prepared to wait at least 15 minutes for a table b/c this place was PACKED all night! But I assure you, the wait and the noise level won't matter once the food is on your table. i've watched and could watch again 'Jiro Dreams of Sushi' [Netflix]-- it's essentially a torture-mentary for people like me who love sushi and sashimi but who does not live on the coasts; a documentary of a master chef who does raw fish and rice well-- nay, obsessively. masterfully. And for two hours, you sit on the edge of your sofa at home, tongue a-wagging, tempted to lick your 50-inch Samsung flat LED. The recent spring trip to Vancouver [and stints in Seattle and Portland] were not of course contrived as a response to seeing this film. But it might as well be. We said, screw variety [in your best queens english, of course]-- we'll never again have it this good in ABQ as far as raw fish-- this is a rarity in ANY city I've visited: three nights in a row dining in this same venue in the East Village [non hoi-poloi] section of Vancouver]. It is inexpensive, high quality, great service and friendly servers. The only downer: no alcohol -- neither sake or Sapporo or Asahi will accompany you raw fish. Been a year since my last visit. Still good value for their albacore tuna and salmon sashimi. Had a 9 piece tuna/salmon sashimi plate plus two orders of the toro, Saba, and snapper nigiri sushi. Wife ordered the daily special roll (chopped toro) and tako-sunomomo. Toro was ok but the snapper and saba did not taste very fresh. This is a major minus because during my previous visit, I had similar results. Appears they don't sell enough snapper and saba and the fish may have been stored too long in the case. Strongly recommend you stay away from them. Service was a bit off this visit. After the initial order, the young lady who took our order failed to return. Fortunately there were other servers who responded to our waving arms. Still a good lunch place and the price is right for the albacore tuna and salmon items. Served cold miso soup, put it in microwave when I asked for a new bowl. Really disappointed since so many reviews here are positive. The fish was decently fresh, very average.
