This place has great service, nice ambience, and the flavors are awesome! Prices are your everyday average for sushi. There are other dishes on the menu ranging from ramen to steak. The reason for my high rating is because of the sushi chef sashimi platter. This platter is strictly chef's choice. The chef will put what ever he feels like on this plate. So if you do not like a certain sashimi they serve, just ask! They will meet your expectations! The manager waited on us tonight and the service was outstanding! read more

Small enough to be intimate, but roomy enough for a small group. Try the BlackRussian roll. It is tasty and satisfying. The first time I came here was for lunch and I tried the sushi. It's all right. But I just finished dinner with the family and discovered there's a lot more than sushi here! The lamp chops were delish. Where most places go wrong they got right. For example the asparagus that came with the lamp chops were crisp and not rubbery. Same with the shrimp in the curry ramen. Came here with a groupon on a Saturday night and had no trouble getting a table. The place was dead. Should've been my first clue that this spot wasn't the best. Second clue should have been the nasty sticky menus they gave us. Mine was still wet from being wiped down but that just made it worst. We ordered a sashimi platter and sushi roll to share. When sushi-o first opened a couple years ago I liked the food but the service was lacking. Recently I have gone back a few times and have to say the food is still great and the service is better. Sushi O has a very good wine list - they find nice values for the standard wine list and usually have a few "special" labels on hand that aren't on the list. This is my go to sushi spot. I've been to several other places and after going here one time, I've become addicted. They have the best sushi and the best service. I saw a review from a week ago about "the guy with the eyebrow piercing", LOL to that. He is the best waiter, hands down. Every time I eat here, he is my waiter. My husband and I have always thought he was great, from the first visit to our most recent. He is attentive to his tables and has never gotten our food or drink orders wrong. The food was excellent. The service was also very good while holding up in these times of adversity (labor shortage). My appetizer was the "fried peppercorn calamari ~ with cilantro and red peppers" and were all rings. It was the perfect temperature for me and had a dipping sauce. The portion was larger than I expected, but I did eat them all myself. For the entrée I had the "spicy tuna roll" which was perfect in taste, form and portion. Now for the service ~ on Saturday, September 18, 2021, Mary was our server. She was managing quite well that day with the restaurant being understaffed, presumably brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. When we had to wait awhile, which was only once, she apologized right away without making excuses. She answered all my questions as soon as I sat down. She was great at her job and paid attention to detail, for example, asking if I wanted the sushi roll to come out after the calamari, and she timed everything perfectly. I did ask how many pieces of sushi came with the tuna roll and she said, "eight". When she delivered the tuna roll, she pointed out there were only six-pieces and she apologized. However, she pro-actively ordered and did not charge me for another WHOLE roll to make up for her mistake AND she asked if that was OK! Of course it was, and she said I could take it home if I wanted, which I did, because the six-piece serving was actually filling enough at the time. I've been to Sushi O a few times before the pandemic. Thankfully they seemed to have weathered through quite well with great staff like Mary. All I can say is WOW! Ordered their Teriyaki Shrimp Hot Plate, the Teriyaki Salmon Hot Plate, and the Spider Roll. When we arrived to pick it up it was right there on the edge of the bar with our name on it so you didn't have to go into the restaurant hardly at all to pick up which is great because, we'll, COVID. It was so much more food than we expected which is always great! Both teriyaki plates were amazing and the rolls were awesome! My husband LOVES takeout Asian food and I'm usually only down for sushi so this was the perfect compromise! Would absolutely recommend Sushi O takeout any day! Disappointed. Tonight was my first visit. We arrived during happy hour and thought we would try some of the $4 sushi . It wasn't worth $4. When we looked at the bill we were charged the regular non happy hour price. We brought it to the bartender's attention. There was no apology. She didn't offer to refund the overcharge. She offered edamame. We advised no correct the bill. She went to the back of the restaurant and returned saying they voided the initial bill and took 20 percent off the new bill. The hotel was near this 3 Star Rated spot so I decided to gamble instead of trading up to a 4/5 Star. Convenience & a good recommendation about this place from my colleague and I hit the ground eating. 007 Roll was good. The tempura shrimp inside was perfect and light unlike most. The sauce they used was also very light. It's a good roll. Now to the fish rolls which is how I roll. Black Russian roll was delicious that comes with its own half/half sauce. I didn't ask what the sauce was sorry. The fish was fresh inside of the roll. Get this roll! Then for my third roll I went #offmenu with Spicy Salmon inside Salmon outside with a spicy wasbi mayo dot ontop of every cut. This roll melted in our mouths. So butter! Came to this spot to try their sushi and was not disappointed. I tried the Saint Tropez roll and the 3 am roll. One was fried and the other was traditional. Both rolls were tasty, however, it seemed like they both were missing a factor to make them really great. They were reasonably priced and the rolls had a good amount of pieces. I also had the ragoon appetizer which looked pretty, but was a bit difficult to eat because it had so many things on the top and not much inside. The only reason I can't give them 4-5 stars is because during my meal, a roach crawled on the wall right by my head and pretty much ruined the rest of the experience for me. I've gone for a late night intimate dinner twice in the last two weeks and have been happy both times The drinks coming from the bar are great and the bartender is open to mixing something up on request based on your taste preference. There are a multitude of sushi options. I loved the soft shell crab tempura roll and the portion sizes were perfect for two. I wish that they would offer a different type of salad but then again you don't go for the salad (which might be why there doesn't seem to be a lot of thought about it). As for dinner, I chjose the lamb chop pops, both times. It's a well seasoned dish, I replace the side with the sauteed asparagus and the two flavors go very well with the herb crusted seasoning on the lamb. The portion size is filling and also comes with rice. I enjoy the dinner and the late night environment. They don't rush you out and it's cool when the staff is done cooking and the fellas from the sushi bar gather in the corner to enjoy their meals while you're lounging after being well fed. I love this place. The restaurant is nice, relaxing, very zen. The sushi are extremely tasty, fresh. My husband and I go there when we want to eat sushi. I usually have either the " power" or 288. The size of the sushi are just right, not too much rice around the main ingredient. The drinks are great. The bartender is fantastic and always there when you need him. The only thing I would say needs to be reviewed as far as taste is the fried Oreos for dessert, great concept but it taste too much like tempura., not a fan but some people might enjoy it. I'm a sucker for sushi. Went here during a work trip and met up with a friend, her hubby and baby. Service was great. The server was super friendly. I ordered the special- Deadpool roll - tuna, salmon, jalapeño and blue crab. It was delicious and the best part is that they didn't stuff it full of rice. I hate when sushi bars try to be cheap and use less fish and more rice. Not the case here. And Heeerrrrreeeeee we go again. Forewarning, this review will likely piss off the owners, employees, and any die hard fans of this place. Stop reading now (which you won't) or refrain from threatening me if you choose to read on and disagree. Simply take this as a learning experience and move on. Since first impressions are everything, let's start there. When you walk in during the day you feel sort of like you're in an old warehouse where a Japanese Ikea vomited. It's stuffy, loud, and uncomfortably bright and dark all at once. I know that's a weird concept but basically some areas are drab, while others have lots of natural light, while others are all artificial light. It's confusing and uneasy on the eyes. Lighting aside though, let's address the staff. Our particular server was very nice, very well dressed, and very kept. She wins points for that. The hostess however looked like she was headed to the strip club and got lost. In no situation EVER at a semi-formal restaurant should your hostess's belly be showing. Nor her boobs. In this situation... well, I'm a guy, and I was more focused on what I wanted for dessert. Yeah yeah that sounds bad saying that, but imagine being a woman in that place and watching all the guys gawk at the inappropriately attired young girl by the front door. Not cool. And one more downfall of staff while I'm on this topic. If you drop your cleaning rag on the floor, don't pick it up and use it to clean tables with. You wouldn't blow your nose with an already snotty tissue would you??? Food time. We ate a lot, because that's what we do. --The seaweed salad was exactly what it is. Nothing more, no different than anyone else, no better, no worse. I have no complaints because I love seaweed salad. --The Duck Tacos that I hear oh so much about... are promising but lacking. They promise to be good, fail to deliver. Here's why: TEXTURE!!! If you give me a wrap full of soft/mushy food there is no contrast. For the love of culinary gods put something crunchy in it!!! Also, don't use the cheap Hoison from off the shelf. Add some cilantro. Make it fun. Just cause it looks cool doesn't mean it tastes cool. It didn't even taste like duck!!! --Moving on though, the Spicy Kani? Dip. Problems all over the board here. It's not spicy AT ALL. It's not even a dip. It's shredded fake crab. You have to use chopsticks and pile it on the wonton chips. What a ripoff. --The friend wontons were bottomless. Not because they were unlimited, but because the filling was so soggy that the bottoms fell out. What a mess. --The X-Files Rolls were bland. I can't say much more about it than that. They really had nothing going on. --St Tropaz rolls sounded awesome, but tasted exactly like the X-Files rolls with a little crunch. The Salmon inside wasn't nearly as fresh as it should have been, nor was it the high quality that sushi demands (and don't try and convince me otherwise, I'm from Seattle, have been a chef all over the Pacific Northwest, and have eaten more Sashimi appropriate Salmon than I care to remember.) Anyways this roll was also a fail, and really just disappointing. Overall the total experience is a huge let down, but a bigger disappointment to my hopes that Richmond becomes a true culinary capital. I heard recently it's the 3rd most restaurants per capita in the nation. Unfortunately most of these places popping up all over the place don't pay attention to detail, don't train their staff, or are really just oblivious to the product they sell. It appears that I will be the first to review this restaurant at any level short of perfection; indeed, my experience at Sushi-O was certainly less than perfect, and I take no pleasure in what I am about to report. We arrived roughly 90-minutes before closing time (10PM on Weekdays) and were seated promptly in an empty dining room. At that time, there were a few bar flies drinking and watching basketball on the bar's 40" LCD, but my girlfriend and I were otherwise alone. And as the boyfriend to a woman who greatly appreciates sushi, I've eaten in all of the sushi establishments in Richmond, and VERY few are THIS quiet. The lack of activity here certainly doesn't indicate a rosy future for this establishment, which is unfortunate for the owners, but also could be seen as an indicator for the quality of the food and the relative pricing thereof. Let me state up front here -- Sushi O is expensive, and a quick glance at their menu will show their pricing is between 20-50% higher than equivalent sushi restaurants in our area. Generally speaking, consumers can accept some hike in price when it can be attributed to a restaurant's atmosphere and hardworking wait staff, but that's a stretch here. In the latter respect, we report that we did have much trouble attracting the attention of the wait staff during our meal -- Why? They were all gathered at the bar, watching basketball on the TV. Now, perhaps the basketball game on the TV was a nail-biter, but its hard to excuse a wait staff from their responsibilities to paying customers on the account of basketball, particularly at a restaurant where the entrees can cost upwards of $30/plate. Really, watch the game on your own time and dime, and at least present the illusion that your customer's are worth your efforts by filling their water glasses occasionally. Poor form. I also report that the food at Sushi O is somewhat lacking. Priced at the lower end of Sushi O's available options ($16), my girlfriend ordered "Second Base" (oddly, this is absent from the restaurant's web site); the plate consisted of 3 rather diminutive rolls: 1 California roll, 1 Spicy Tuna roll, and 1 Vegan Roll. And as a woman who does NOT enjoy heavy spicing, my girlfriend inquired about substituting the included spicy tuna roll (individually priced at $6) for salmon ($4.50) but was told that there would be an additional charge of $2-3 for the downgrade substitution. Considering that the roll she desired was *cheaper* that the included roll, this seemed an unusual charge -- and she elected to keep the original setup. When the sushi arrived, she noted that the rice was old and had become pasty, almost like half-dried Elmer's glue. As an explanation, I suppose the restaurant had held off on cooking additional rice that evening on account of the slow dining room; again, this is rather hard to excuse. For my entree, I decided to order the chicken Teriyaki at $16. The "sizzling" platter on which my meal arrived was reminiscent of the same one might find in an Applebee's or low-cost Mexican establishment, and was certainly unexpected from a restaurant of Sushi O's assumed stature. Further flogging my senses and expectations was the 6-oz of chicken breast, obviously a store-bought fillet which was horribly overcooked to the point of requiring a steak knife to consume. Also included were 5 broccoli florets, over which at least 12-oz of Teriyaki sauce was applied. It left the meal swimming. Did I order soup? Overall, I was left searching for the value in our experience. The quiet dining area was appreciated, but the same attribute can be found elsewhere in Richmond, and in locations in which the wait staff is attentive and the food properly cooked. The capstone on the evening came at the conclusion of our meal, when our waitress presented my bill for my signature, along with a pen advertising another of Richmond's restaurants (Can Can). But, perhaps she was attempting to do us a service by subtly inviting us to take our business elsewhere. Indeed, we will. read more

We were ignored by the hostesses and groups of people who came in after us were seated before us. After everyone else was seated the hostesses exchanged looks in our direction and talked amongst themselves but oh so slightly loud enough so that we could hear that they could seat us in the far back corner. Holy God. I had the crayfish dumplings... They were actually ravioli. Served floating in butter. I don't know where they sourced the crayfish from. I asked, and I was told they were local. This fills me with terror, because it tasted like they had been frozen three or four times, and most recently thawed in a vat of KY lube fresh from the 1980s. Two colleagues and i dined here this evening. We arrived at 5:45 and our waitress greeted us, was pleasant, and informed us that the sushi bar was very busy with takeout orders so it would be in our best interest to place our order as soon as possible so we wouldn't have to wait. We did, and our orders arrived quickly and were delicious. This is where it went downhill. The bartender, named Chris, who is apparently also the manager, was walking by our table. I said "excuse me, I know you are busy ...." and he RUDELY interrupted me and said "I DON'T HAVE TIME TO TAKE YOUR PICTURE!" And he proceeded to walk away. He then yelled back "I'll send your server over to you! "This drew the attention of several other guests who shook their heads at his comment and behavior. One even came up the to our table and said how incredibly rude he was. They were the ones that knew his name was Chris, and that he was the manager. The best part of this whole incident, is that I was going to ask him for a refill of my club soda and to place a take-out order for three more sushi rolls to go. Instead, we immediately got up and left the restaurant. I have never in my lifetime, been so shocked and appalled at a service provider's behavior nor been treated so rudely for no reason whatsoever. Having spent 10 years in food service, I know that restaurants can have a 'bad night,' so when it seems as such, I will come back another time. In fact, I'm a firm believer in the '3rd times a charm' mentality. Indeed, I've been here on three different occasions, and disappointed every time for one reason or another. The prices are that of a fine-dining establishment, but unfortunately the food is that of any other average sushi joint, and the service (and volume) is that of a packed country diner with only one server. The first time I visited, I was seated and ushered drinks promptly, but it took almost 40 minutes from the time I placed my order of a single roll, to the time I received it. Given that it was the middle of dinner, and the place was relatively busy, I knew I'd have to visit again, to be fair. The second time I ventured to Sushi-O was about a month later, for a late lunch on my break. I was coming from West Broad and Libbie, which was a 30 minute drive, round-trip, leaving me 30 minutes to eat. Reasonable, right? Unfortunately, they were closed. What is up with those hours? People have diverse schedules, and as a general rule, eat around the clock. Perhaps this was my own ignorance? The last time was the final straw. With my prior experience here, i had the stopwatch going this time. I was seated after about a 10 minute wait - no big deal. I was with a friend, and we sat at the table for 45 minutes before anyone bothered to ask if we had place our orders. They said they'd get our server. 10 minutes later, our server arrived to take our drink orders, and our first drinks (sodas) were free. I feel that's an awfully small price to pay for making a patron wait 55 minutes just for drinks - had I gone elsewhere, I'd have food in my stomach and be on my way by now, but maybe their view of service isn't the same as mine. We wound up with an $80 dollar tab between 2 sushi rolls and drinks, spent 2.5 hours waiting to eat our (mediocre at best) sushi rolls, and couldn't get our server to keep up with our drinks. read more

The soup and salad were not as good as I am use to getting. The dressing seemed watered down. It's a great atmosphere and music though. I was upset because I dined in and got an order to go and the 20% gratuity for being in a large party applied to my to go order as well. The rolls came with soup dining in but I did not receive any to go which was disappointing. The Bento box I tried was fine but not the best I have had. The tempura portion was good. The tempura sauce seemed watered down as well. I was overall disappointed for the price. I usually go to Sushi Box down the street and would recommend still going there. read more

We also got a few sushi rolls, which again were pretty good. I've always thought that the line between good and great sushi places is well-defined, and Sushi-O helps prove that. It is good, but no one would ever think it great. The decor seemed way too chic for the location - a strip mall exclave of Chesterfield Towne Center. The giant Buddha is cool though. There was a period in my professional life where the directors of my department would routinely invite everyone to lunch at Sushi O. I have NO idea why, but I swear I ate here once a week for over a month at one point. The only bonus was that I didn't have to pay for my meals. That said, had I been paying, I would have been really upset about it. I should admit that I'm not a big sushi eater, as in I will eat it, but I've never thought to myself, "hmm I could go for sushi tonight". When we would go I would get one of the business box lunches. Every single time, no matter which "box lunch" I tried I would feel sick after. The food never sat well with me and generally just didn't taste good (always salty tasting). While the decor may be modern and the restaurant clean, it didn't take me more than a vist to realize I just did not like this place. Its safe to say, I would never recommend this place to anyone and I'm stoked my company has found a new favorite place for "work lunches". read more

Love Sushi-O! The rolls are unique, the service is good. The special rolls (try x-files!) are somewhat expensive, so this is a more of a restaurant I visit occasionally instead of a go-to type of place. I have only had sushi and edamame, but the rest of their menu, by the former chef of Pomegranate (another favorite of mine, so sad its closed) looks great. Enjoy! read more
