Headed over to Sushi Pop for a late lunch/early dinner. We had never been there before and I love sushi, so based on the reviews I was very excited! When we arrive there are a few tables of people seated and a few people at the bar. I would definitely say the restaurant is deceiving from the outside - it is actually very large and very trendy inside. Our server took our drink order. The drinks listed on the menu are quite different, and very interesting combinations. I tried to ask if I could have a regular Moscow Mule, but the waitress just insisted that the one on their menu was exactly a regular Moscow mule, just with vodka from Japan. However, there was another liqueur in the drink, and green tea something or other. The cocktail was good, had strong flavors, but probably isn't something I'd order again, just based on my preferences. We ordered two rolls, the hot mess and the Royal. The Royal was a simple roll, with amazing flavors. It tasted incredibly fresh and I really enjoyed it. The hot mess was exactly as the name implies. The elements of the roll were all good, but I felt that some of the cooked fish on top were over cooked. I also felt like there was so much going on it didn't all jive. This roll felt like something I'd get at a quick service sushi spot. I'd probably come back if someone else wanted to, but at $15 a roll and $11 a drink (even a single beer was $8-10), I'm not running back. It didn't set a big enough gap from lower cost options in the area for me. read more

this has always been my favorite sushi spot... until they discontinued the hot mess roll which is my favorite. I always come here (from out of town) JUST for this roll and they took it off the menu for seemingly no reason (it's a fan favorite). I ordered 4 different sushi rolls to try and didn't even finish one because they were just meh. Honestly won't be returning here EVER again unless they put that roll back on the menu. Went in as a walk in, was able to be seated right away. Very cool environment with nice lighting and ambience. Tons of selection and choices for drinks. As well as sushi and fishes. Got sushi bowl with tons of different fish. Very tastyy as I mainly went for the uni which is hard to o find. The california uni was rather tastier than the Maine one which was more fishy/bitter. The sscallop and bluefin tuna was amazing the salmon belly and yellowtail was great too. PROS: Many choices of fish, freshness, and varietty of hot food. CONS:: Too long of wait for food, even for sashimi. Almost 45 mins for sashimi to come. VERY SMALL portion size. My all caps were probably larger than the size of sashimi there lol. Pricey for sure. But it's sad if we leave even a bit hungry after $120 for two. Overall, fine dining and cute place for a date. Take your ladies there this Valentine's Day gentlemen. read more

Omakase experience: I'm hesitant to leave a review because this is a hidden gem in Oviedo, specifically the Omakase experience (generally offered monthly on Tuesdays). Chef Chau has created a truly spectacular menu each time we've attended, and it's one of those deals where you feel like you're at a Michelin Star place before it gets its Michelin Star. There's an artistry to the experience here that can't be matched elsewhere in Orlando, and it'll only be $95pp or so for so much longer - go while you can (but also don't go so my wife and I can always have two spots available). Outside of the Omakase experience, they adapted quickly to Covid and offered a seamless carry out experience that allowed us to get that high quality loveliness at home. Bar none... our place to go for sushi in Orlando. Last, but not least, go with the freshly grated wasabi - here and anywhere else you can find that will actually offer it. The Omakase menu changes each time it's offered, but this was truly fine dining at its best, for a fraction of the price it'll be at some point in the future. Located in Oviedo you can't really ask for more. I've been frequenting this sushi location on and off for a few years. I really like artsy decor and the music playlist that they have, although it can be a little too loud at times and you'd have to talk over the music. Started the meal off with corn miso soup which I thought was pretty delicious. Ordered the Volcano with real crab, Triple tail, Ceviche and Rising sun. The first two rolls didn't really wow me, but the last two was pretty good. In my opinion, for the price of the meal, the portion size was on the smaller size and a little lacking. Neither one of us were full and had to still have a snack when we got home. I really wish the sushi rolls were more filling for the price that I'm paying. We started with unique cocktails.I had their bottled craft cocktail, dark and stormy. This was no average goslings rum and ginger beer. You then poured it into your glass of ginger beer.Hubby had the legendary Nikka japanese whiskey served over a nice big block of ice. They have an amazing selection of hard to find japanese whiskey. While perusing we ordered the truffle edamame... the only way to ever have edamame ever again. So yummy.Here where it gets hazy. Anything the server said to get we did. So we had a great hamachi app, 2 amazing hot apps, 3 rolls and one more cold app at the end. All of the choices were amazing. The cold apps are where they really shine. Light and elegant and always interesting.Much like the sushi, we had to be rolled out! We sat at the sushii bar in seat one and two so we got to see all the action. We had amazing service from our server, great laughs with the manager and chit chat from the executive chef who was working expo.We chatted with the sushi guys and they give you an option on the menu to buy the kitchen a round of beer for ten bucks. Please don't throw any rocks! I'm just telling my food experience... The food first. I've tried the: Hamachi Pops (app), Black widow Roll(BABY - okay that song is stuck in my head... ugh), Hot Mess Roll, and Ceviche Roll. Also tried: KFC (korean fried chicken) and PMS (pb, chocolate, salted caramel) dessert) Hamachi Pops: Fun app. Bite size. Great to share for the table. I liked it. For those that are sensitive to fishy fish and like salmon, maybe they won't like it as much. Ceviche Roll: My favorite out of them all has to be the Ceviche roll. Hands down delicious and refreshing. I love the contrast of fresh fish with the crunchy onions. Salty. Sour. Spicy. LOVE! Plus the avocado made it creamy too. I would order this again and again. Black widow: This was okay. It was like a typical spider roll with soft shell crab. There was nothing really special to me about it. Hot Mess: I think the name of this sounds pretty on point. It's just a lot of going on right here. I guess I should have known my self better but it just got to the point where it was too greasy for me. The rendered bacon addition was probably suppose to be the kicker but it was off putting. Also because it wasn't crunchy because of the sauce mixed in. This roll in particular has rice that was a little too wet. KFC: If you love Gochujang then you'll love this! It is quite tasty and remained crispy. It was drenched in the sauce. PMS: Fun innovative dessert using i think molecular techniques to derive the pb powder. Very cool. The cake was still 'molten'. Ice cream was delish - reminds me of White Rabbit candy (hello my asian ppl?) if you don't eat it with the salt, which beware its on the veeeery top. The rest of the stuff: appearance, decor, and service, plus other misc stuff. Overall, it is a very trendy fun place for people that like american fusion sushi. The white 'booth' chairs in the middle of the restaurant behind the bar could use some sprucing up. You could see the deteriorating parts even in the dim setting. Service was fine. My real life (and Yelp!) friend Tim A. told me to go here and so I did. Yep, I made a reservation and fortunately there was a table open. No, I do not want to sit at the sushi bar tonight thanks. Sushi Pop is a different sort of sushi place. Yes, it's sushi, but it's "reimagined" and "deconstructed" so the sort of classic rolls you might expect will be hard to find if that's what you want. I let my waitress talk me into the special, which was the jaw of a tilefish that was battered and fried. It was... interesting. I'm glad I had it and I enjoyed it, but I don't know that I would have it again. There just didn't seem to be much meat to it though it was tasty. For mains, I went with the KFC and the Hot Mess Roll. The wings were quite spicy and were served very hot out of the fryer, taking a bit to cool off enough to eat. Quite meaty and very tasty. The Hot Mess was a smoked salmon and avocado roll topped with baked tuna and other fish plus spicy mayo and bacon. Yes, bacon at a sushi restaurant. It was different and enjoyable and I'd say "Yes, you should have this!" Service from my waitress was great. She was almost too friendly with a strange need to touch my shoulder each time she went by. Not uncomfortable but different. Beer list has improved since Tim was here. Yes, the usual Kirin Ichiban, but a lot of interesting imports from all over. I love the Hitachino brews, but the Kellerbier went quite well with the fish. Very interesting decor. As Tim says, it's a loop of anime movies. And somehow, I got very engaged in the story of Mei and Totoro thanks to the captions. It has a happy ending, don't worry. read more

Finally stopped in after passing it a million times on my way home from work. I arrived pretty early at 5:30pm which was perfect because I was able to catch happy hour...yay! I opted for the generous pour of red wine which was a cabernet tonight and at $4....Score! After reading the reviews it seemed like the Ceviche roll was a winner...and yes it was. At first I was not wowed. But after some extra squeezes of lime, a hint more of the salt and some wasabi...winner, winner chicken dinner! The Cobia was delightful and the overall roll was light and refreshing. Which was a switch for me. However the roll did pack a punch at $14 bucks. I then tried one of the happy hour rolls which included shrimp tempura, cilantro aioli, and something else and it was just ok. It didn't wow me like the 1st roll. I sat at the bar and the bartender was awesome. Courteous but not buggy if you know what I mean. Sushi Pop rocks! I love the way the restaurant is set up. The overhead lights look like flowers. The chairs are comfy. The napkin, plate and chopsticks were laid out perfectly. The dimmed lights can make this place into a romantic date night, or just a casual night out. There is Japanese pop art paintings on the walls and anime playing on the TVs also. Gives it a real "sushi pop" vibe. I didn't order anything too fancy. Just the Three Tails roll and baby octopus. My first time having baby octopus and it wasn't bad at all! Just a bit pricey for my taste. I dine on a budget sometimes. lol Service was great. All the hosts and servers were dressed up in some sort of Japanese fashion. It was too cute. The buffalo shrimp pictured is their take on what I would compare to bang bang shrimp but in my opinion even better. They offer happy hour so check out those times as they changed due to covid. The low rider roll was my favorite along with everything bagel. This raspberry sake martini was so good and they have the best gin and tonics.
