Unagi - chef Danny's creation
My C.

What a hidden gem! My hubby and I were in the area and stopped here for lunch. Danny was our sushi chef and he is definitely an artist!! Super friendly staff, great service, and every dish we ordered was mouth watering amazing! We even got to sample a few items, per chef's creation. We have been to many sushi/sashimi places and yet the quality of the food here is in leagues of its own. It's nice when your chef knows his craft! We plan to return and are willing to drive the distance. Highly recommend you give this place a shot!

Oysters!

Fantastic experience! We stopped by this place for the first time a week or so ago and will most definitely be returning. We ordered oysters on the half shell and a couple of sushi rolls. The oysters were garnished beautifully and were absolutely delicious! The sushi rolls were great, too. May was the person who help us. She was a little beam of sunshine. Genuinely nice and very attentive. The restaurant was also clean and had a welcoming atmosphere. Keep up the good work Sushi Star, see you guys soon!

I would definitely come back for the Walnut Prawn Roll. Service was good, very quiet and clean restaurant.

5 stars for Sushi Star!! The restaurant is so clean and the staff are very friendly! The oysters are delicious, and so is the fried rice ...and of course the sushi :P I was taken to Japan in Citrus Heights! Great spot!

Walked in on a Friday night for dinner. This place gives a a casually, family friendly atmosphere. The service was great and the staff was very friendly. The food took awhile to come out but it was delicious. The fish was very fresh but the wait time was a little long

3 Items Bento Box: salmon teriyaki, California Roll and tempura

My friend and I ran into this restaurant just by driving around. We were surprised by how well this place treated us. The server greeted us and invited us to order when we were ready. I asked which rolls were the most popular and he suggested the Cecey roll. I was concerned with the level of spicy and the server mentioned they can adapt the ingredients to make the roll more mild. I ordered a bento box and loved how the salad had mixed greens and tomatoes. I also noticed the California roll had 8 pieces instead of a typical 3 at most restaurants. I loved this place and am happy it's near my work so I can enjoy the food again. The place is small but it is worth trying.

It is unfortunate this place is closed. This was our "Go to" place every Sunday. One day we went and it was closed. Now, it appears it is permanently closed. This place had so much potential. The owner and chefs were so friendly and nice and it was the food that kept us coming back. It is sad to see it go.

We always love japanese food that's why we wanted to try a variety of everything. We saw this place and first time coming here. The vibes of the place is simple japanese kind of vibe. Small space but still the ambience is great. You should definitely try the Fried oyster for appetizer. Its 5/5 for me. We have to order another round. We dont like the chicken karagee, not the usual chicken karagge. The tonkatsu is 3/5 for me flavorful but not so much with the umami flavors. Love all the sushi. And a big serving of sashimi deluxe for only $50 is a great choice. Love the place and will go back again here. Only one cons is the orders take time it takes about 20mins for our orders to come but they gave us a complimentary edamame so its still good!

Great customer service and even better food.. They messed up and gave me steak & shrimp instead of steak & chicken and they fixed it promptly and were apologetic. First time trying this place and will be back. Lots of food for the price.

We tried this place out for the first time after trying to find a new sushi spot in the area. This place had good reviews so we decided to try it out. The location isn't the best, so don't be concerned when you drive up to it. That being said, the service was phenomenal. We came in on a Sunday and they were not very busy. We were told to sit where we liked and they immediately came to us and asked us how we were and took our drink orders. For the food, we got one of the hot appetizers which was very good and came out hot. The edamame was delicious with just the right amount of heat and seasoning. For the sushi, we ordered some nigiri and a couple rolls. The fish on top of the nigiri was super fresh and delicious - it just melted in your mouth. The rolls were super filling as well and had the perfect combinations. Only problem I had with one of the rolls was that it had too much sauce. The rice was soaked in the sauce and it just killed the flavor of everything else for me. Other than that, the food came out quickly and it was super fresh and tasty. This is a great sushi spot to come try. They are super nice and friendly, with great food!

everything was delicious! the sushi is fresh & very reasonably priced compared to other local spots. service is excellent & the owners are so nice. the hibachi steak was a little more well done than we would have preferred but the flavor was still good! definitely check this spot out if you're in the area :)

California Roll

Affordable sushi that was actually good! We went here for lunch (around 11:45am) and the place was just open for the day so we were seated right away. The food came out pretty fast. - california roll: lots of filling and good. My kid loved it and finished it all - spider roll: soft shell crab was crispy and generous pieces of the crab. The sauce was good They made a cute orange character for my kid at the end of the meal. We'll be back when we're in the area

Soft shell crab. Huge and tasty

Great food, medium service. Would rather cashier not talk and be so forgetful and politely rude.

They told me 30 minutes and it ended up being an hour and a half wait. Also, the sushi was extremely bland. We won't be coming back here.

We were craving some Japanese food and found this place with decent reviews. We came on a Saturday…read morearound lunch and it wasn't busy. The exterior is very unsuspecting. I would have never thought a Japanese restaurant was here. The inside was another story! The inside is decorated with all kinds of Japanese pictures and decor. You definitely felt like you were in a Japanese restaurant. The menu was impressive! Everything had pictures which is so amazing! It was just easier having an idea of what to pick based on looking at the pictures. There were all kinds of sushi rolls, bento boxes, noodles, appetizers and plates. We decided to get the ramen, salmon katsu, and tempura bowl. Food came our really quick. Portions were good and everything we tasted wonderful. It definitely satisfied our craving. The tempura was crispy. The ramen broth was rich and noodles nice and chewy. The bento box came with gyoza, salad, tempura, oranges, miso soup and rice. Service was great. They were attentive, and friendly. Eating with our littles ones is never easy and we appreciated how patient they were with us. We loved the food and hope to come back and try their sushi next!

Sometimes those restaurants that look less-than-inspiring on the outside can be a true hidden…read moretreasure on the inside. This is exactly what I had experienced when I paid a visit to "Akira Sushi" Located directly on Greenback Lane and adjacent to Auburn Blvd in Citrus Heights, this place opened its doors for business back in mid-2024. Since then, they have seen a very respectable amount of positive reviews. As I had previously mentioned, the exterior isn't much to look at as this is a fairly dated strip mall that hasn't received any updates in decades. And to those that remember, this is the same building that "Pho 54" occupied from 2013-2023. During my visit which was the afternoon of Sunday 8/3/2025 at around 5:15pm, I parked directly outside as there were no other cars here. Upon entry, there was one other customer finishing dinner. After being greeted and seated, I was given a menu complete with a cold glass of iced water. I will say that the interior of this place is quite impressive, cozy, and inviting. The distressed wooden tables paired up with the tan-colored walls and unique murals add an upscale look to the overall interior. On a packed evening, this place can comfortably seat around 50 guests. I will say that their menu is fully loaded with pure deliciousness. They offer a huge variety of traditional sushi rolls, custom rolls, Bento boxes, seafood tacos (available in tuna or salmon), Poke bowls, and even ramen for the colder days/evenings. And even a nice variety of beverages including soda, beer, wine, and sake. Since I was dining solo, I decided on the "Sunomomo Salad" which was a cucumber salad w/Ponzu sauce and Bonito flakes. My main dish was their "Napa Valley" roll which uses shrimp tempura, cucumbers, avocado, spicy aioli, unagi sauce, and topped with sesame seeds. My salad was brought out in less than 3 minutes while my sushi arrived just a few minutes later. I will say that everything was very fresh and delicious. The avocado had perfect consistency while the shrimp was made to perfection. In my humble opinion, this was an absolute gem of a roll. All in all, "Akira Sushi" is about as good as it gets for quality sushi in Citrus Heights. They have very respectable hours of operation being open 6 days a week; Tuesday through Sunday from 11:30am-2:30pm / 4:00-8:30pm with extended hours on Fri/Sat while being closed for business on Monday. Service was great as the young lady that waited on me was polite, courteous, and respectful. With a great atmosphere, delicious food, and reasonable prices, I am giving Akira Sushi a unanimous five-star rating.

We came in on a Tuesday night and there was still a crowd, but we were seated within about 15 minutes. It was quite lively with a few larger groups were we were seated, but you could still talk amongst your group and be heard. As for the food, it is still some of the best fish I've tasted. The prices have definitely gone up in the 10ish years I've been coming, so it's probably more a rare treat than an occasional visit. Everything was super fresh and came out quick enough. The serving size for some of the dishes have diminished, for example, the Musolino Pasta. Considering the base is upon noodles, I'm surprised they're putting less into that rather than their fish. The sushi rolls and sashimi dishes we picked still had a lot of fish pieces and very very fresh. Just that one big ding on a non-sushi based dish and of course the prices. Aside from that, I still love coming here and the Fair Oaks location is still near and dear to my heart.
