My family ate there last night. Found it on yelp on the way to bodega bay getaway. Nice space. Service is fine. Sushi was just ok. Not sure why the high ratings. We found a hair on Our spider roll. Told the server. Waited about 15 mins they brought another spider roll. We swear it was the same roll. Tempura crab was cold and part of fried hair still stuck to crab. Was very disappointed. Tonight we started with Sebastopol roll, tempura prawn rolled into snow crab, tuna and avocado. It was very tasty, served with a side of wasabi and pickled ginger. I have enjoyed Sushi Tozai many times before tonight, and so i cannot believe I am having to write a review about my MOLDY WAKAME SALAD! I ordered by phone, and my husband brought it home for dinner...this is what we usually do, as we have a 4 year old, and it is not easy to eat out. I took my first bite of wakame salad, and it tasted mushy, SUPER salty, and awful! I swallowed the bite, and told my husband to taste it. He thought it had gone "bad". I took it under the light, and with a fork, inspected the cup more carefully...only to find nasty, moldy, mushy Wakame seaweed salad! I really hope I don't get sick, I took a few probiotics afterwards for good measure. I also called the restaurant right away to tell them, and make sure they didn't serve any more of this to their customers! I asked for a refund, but all I got was a credit for the wakame (4.50). Whoop-Dee-Doo. I then took a picture of the salad, and emailed it to them with my complaint. We shall see...if I barf, I will write an update to this... read more

My favorite dish here (so far) is the Martini Prawns, which are to die for! Although everything else I have tried was yummy, including the tasty Miso soup, and the best tempura I have ever eaten. Tempura here is not greasy at all, like many other places, but, is cooked perfectly, crisp with the veggies still crunch-fresh on the inside. Obviously they keep the oil fresh and plenty hot. I grew up in Sebastopol and have walked or driven by this place no less then 10000 times and yet never have eaten here, so when my friends suggested we go there the other day I was intrigued. Walking in you immediately feel like your in a Japanese restaurant with the great wood decor and classic sushi house feel. The staff a polite and kind and warmly greet you. The prices are reasonable especially for a place that seems like a higher end sushi restaurant. Rolls are $5-12 and cover mostly classics without and crazy rolls, which is more my style. I had a cucumber and shrimp salad to start and miso soup. Both were delicate and well balanced and tasted fresh and clean. Highly recommend the cucumber and shrimp salad as a starter. The sushi we had was a mix of several different rolls. Everything was very fresh and well presented. I could tell the fish was fresh and high quality. Service was reasonably fast and good. All in all this is my kind of sushi place. Nothing flashy or too expensive, just very clean fresh flavors and Classic Japanese food and sushi. Would be a great little date spot. I would recommend coming here and giving it a try, I can say for a fact there is no better sushi in Santa Rosa or Sebastopol...not saying much I know. I've dined at some of the best Sushi restaurants on Maui, and found Sushi Tozai to be a pleasant surprise. We ate upstairs, and the atmosphere is very comfortable, very clean, with authenic Asian decor. The fish was very fresh, well presented and delicious. We had the Sebastopol Roll ($14), the fatty yellow tail Nigiri, Unagi Nigiri (very tasty) and for an appetizer the calamari tempura. It was enough food for the 2 of us, and the rice was perfect. They did not have diacon radish or seaweed salad on the menu, which are my favorites, nor did they bring us hot towels to wash our hands before the meal- however our wait person was exceptionally appreciative and thanked us many times for our patronage. read more

Hi, so I am a trained culinarian with an AA in the culinary arts. I'm quite serious about food, especially traditional japanese food (not interested in shrimp tempura-cream cheese-lots of different fish-with two kinds of sauces-rolls). I used to enjoy this place despite the horribly slow service it has (even when not busy) because Patrick the sushi chef is very nice and if you go with his recommendations the fish for nigiri is very good. However, that is the only way I would ever recommend this place to someone looking for true quality Japanese food. I found the entrees to be bland representations of dishes I easily perfected at home. They might be suitable to the unknowing palate but if you've had GOOD soba or teriyaki stick to the American fusion appetizers like the martini prawns to avoid disappointment. Although the decor is one of the best in the area, truly the service can be appalling. So much so that I have sworn this place off a few times promising never to come again. Regretfully I still go some times with friends who LOVE it because they serve crazy deep fried rolls. If that is all you're looking for and you have the time to be ignored it's nice. It's good for the standard American crowd. In fact the atmosphere is so nice you might actually have a good time. Last time I was there I ordered what Patrick recommend and it was great, the fish just melted. Then I took a chance and ordered a plain hamachi roll. The rice was so packed into the roll that it was grossly bruised and the fish alone wasn't good enough to take home and give to my cat. And really, how can anyone find the service to be good? Even when I was a regular and would be given shochu on the house by owner Steve I always knew it would not be a quick dinning experience. In conclusion: my in laws, who live in seb-town, LOOOVE this place because they always order the martini prawns and carburetor roll (think fried shrimp buffet) and that's about as Japanese as they like it. My favorite Japanese spot in Sonoma County. The waitresses are very nice and the food is great. I usually get the Chicken Teriyaki Executive box which includes yummy tempura, a great little seaweed salad, miso that is wonderful and a customary salad with good ginger dressing. The chicken teriyaki is the best in Sonoma County by far, and the rolls (specifically Cali, Philadelphia, Yam Tempura, Salmon) are fresh and very delicious. Quite good. This location has seen a number of different restaurants here over the years, but hopefully Sushi Tozai is here to stay. Sushi Tozai is a great sushi restaurant to hit up if you are in the area. They are priced just right, and the sushi rolls are to die for! They present them amazingly and if you order the Sebastopol and the Carborator, you are in for a feast! Some of the rolls are smaller, but they have some that are an entire meal on their own! I recommend this place 100%, I've been here countless times and have always always had a great experience. The only reason I knock off a star is because the Miso soup isn't the best I've had - and the tofu doesn't seem to melt in my mouth the way it should. My parents will only go out to Sebastopol for sushi now at Tozai because it's the greatest place to go in that area. read more

I ordered the beef sukiyaki and philedalphia roll, all together is about 25 dollars. The quantity definitely made me full. The roll was not the usual roll I tried at other places, but it indeed tasted fresh. I was almost full when the beef sukiyaki came after and it was delicious, would have enjoyed it more if I was not so full. Went with a couple of girlfriends at 8-ish on a Saturday night, and were seated upstairs. Although there were 8-10 other people seated upstairs the room was uncomfortably quiet. There was atmospheric music playing but it was so quiet that you could barely hear it, and it felt like you had to whisper to be polite to the other guests. Not good for a girlfriend evening out. We ordered Chirashi plates, which consist of assorted sashimi over rice, and there seemed to be no attempt at presentation or detail whatsoever. 1/2" to 3/4" thick x 1" square chunks of tuna, salmon, and yellowtail were strewn over a bed of rice, along with 5 tough pickled radish sticks, 2 omelette pieces, and 1 sad looking flattened prawn. It looked like some rookie threw something together in the back room 4 hours ago to sell through a drive-thru window..... What happened to attention to the detail, thin, clean, accurate slices without skin, and pride of presentation by the chef ? That used to be what sushi was all about..... I guess the incoming suburban throng into West County only care about how fast they can get their food - like at McD's & B-King... Great service and better food. Can get crowded and it is very small but there is two stories and upstairs is usually less crowded. Prawns martini are my favorite! They have an amazing seaweed salad and I love their Carburetor roll. Miso soup is okay, really salty. The service is hit and miss here. The hostess who is always there is really unpleasant but the servers are usually decent. My only real complaint is that on two different occasions the server has forgotten to put in our appetizer order(my beloved prawns martini) and after asking about them they arrive with dinner. Vegetarians get to enjoy Japanese food here. The ambiance is extremely pleasant, the servers amiable and the clientele appreciative. The menu specifies whether an item is vegan. Fantastic vegetarian dragon rolls. I am not a big rice eater, but I loved the platter of dragon rolls. Next time I will try other veggie rolls that sound good. The vegetables and tofu dishes are like homemade but better, portion sized just right. Very nice sushi restaurant. The fish has almost always been super fresh. I love getting the "chef's special" rolls. Always interesting and good. When I can I sit up at the tiny bar they have and talk to the sushi chef. The Service at the tables can be a bit slow.
