As with most restaurants these days, as soon as they start seeing more traffic, their attention to detail and quality tails off and declines. We ordered Chirashi plates, which consist of assorted sashimi over rice, and there seemed to be no attempt at presentation or detail whatsoever. 1/2" to 3/4" thick x 1" square chunks of tuna, salmon, and yellowtail were strewn over a bed of rice, along with 5 tough pickled radish sticks, 2 omelette pieces, and 1 sad looking flattened prawn. It looked like some rookie threw something together in the back room 4 hours ago to sell through a drive-thru window..... What happened to attention to the detail, thin, clean, accurate slices without skin, and pride of presentation by the chef ? That used to be what sushi was all about..... I guess the incoming suburban throng into West County only care about how fast they can get their food - like at McD's & B-King... As soon as you start accepting mediocrity - you might as well bury yourself. read more

I am giving Tozai 3 stars for the service only because the fish is always fresh so I don't mind paying a little too much for sushi. I went there 3 times and all 3 times I had to wait for my food for more than an hour. I wont eat there anymore but I will get take out :-) read more

The sushi was good especially the Sebastopol roll and the dynamite roll but the service was horrible! We ordered 4 rolls. We waited almost 1/2 hour for our food, only to get 1/2 of our order, then waited almost another 1/2 hour for the next 2 rolls. It would have been nice to have them all at once! My boyfriend and I went to Tozi after going to another restaurant and the wait was too long. We got seated with only a short wait but the waited 15 mins for out waitress to even address us. By that time we already were ready to order drinks, apps and entree... Then wait another 15 mins and no drink no nothing. The table next to us confided they had been waiting an hour for their entrees... We got up and left. On our way out we overhears another waitress telling them that their waitress was in the back helping make sushi..!!!..?! read more

I live in San Francisco and oddly, I stuggle to find decent sushi. Tozai was amazing. The service was incredible and the sushi: sparkling, clean and delicious! The waitress was well informed and when I asked her about the uni she told me that they had gotten it in yesterday at noon. It was amazing and just about brought a tear to my eye. I have had consistently great sushi here - especially the carburator roll, dragon roll, and shrimp tempura roll. They can even make vegan options - you can ask for specifics. Good service, although it can be a little slow to get the food sometimes. Would give it 5 stars if it wasnt for that. Reasonably priced. read more

Admittedly, this is the first and only sushi place we've been to. Our son and his wife took us . . . to get us to try it. The food was very tasty. We really enjoyed the experience and will be going back very soon. We ordered the California roll, Philadelphia roll, tempura shrimp roll, rainbow roll and the house salad. Soooo good! It's not the most impressive restaurant I've dined in but that wasn't important. It was adequate. The prices also seem reasonable for the quantity. The parking lot is a bit tight, but apparently an adjacent lot is available after regular work hours. read more

I appreciate good sushi and am never disappointed at Sushi Tozai. Many of their veggie rolls taste like the produce used is organic. They also have excellent fish and veggie combo rolls, miso and tempura. The atmosphere is very pleasant and for the quality of their dishes it is reasonably priced. I especially recommend the yam tempura roll! The service is good and it is an easy place to order take-out as well. read more

The portions were huge but that didn't compensate for the poor presentation and lack of flavor. just the other day i stopped by Tozai on a whim to enjoy some sushi with my husband. we were greeted promptly and sat at a nice table by the window. a charming young server approached us we started with some tea and miso. we had a few roles recommended by the waiter (Mermaid and Samurai!!) and it was divine. the fish is fresh, the service is fast and time feels worth spent! just saying... yummy! i went here with a client who knows the owner, so we had a bunch of off-menu treats. the fish is fantastically fresh, as the owners of sushi tozai have the same purveyor as nori kusakabe's sushi ran in sausalito (possibly the best sushi in the bay area) and cindy pawlcyn's go fish in st. helena. the smoky grilled mackerel appetizer was rustic and satisfying, with an intense flavor that fills your mouth with the taste of the sea. the sushi rolls were a toro and avocado roll and a salmon roll with fresh asparagus and salmon roe. the sashimi was, as i mentioned, supremely fresh; rich and velvety and melting in your mouth upon the first bite. if you're in sebastopol and have a taste for fresh fish, check them out! read more

sushi is about many things - but the foundation is always the quality of the fish. The fish at Sushi Tozai is as fresh as it gets. Next comes the presentation. In a good sushi restaurant the sashimi is always served on a bed of shredded diakon radish with a shiso leaf. Lesser restaurants grab some other green leaf. Sushi Tozai always has fresh shiso leaf on hand. That is sometimes absent from some of the big players in Santa Rosa. Not only the quality of the fish extraordinary but the portions are extremely generous. Five, no six, maybe seven stars fir this great little local restaurant. read more

Dined here six months ago, the food and service were great. Tonight it was a different experience. Yes, it was Mother's Day. Yes, we had a (very cooperative) toddler with us. To get to the point, we placed our order, was brought my wine and our Edamane. That was it for an hour. I ordered another glass of wine and our (very nice) server said it was on the house, because "Mother's Day..busiest day of the Year". My daughter-in-laws salad arrived (they aren't made individually are they?) and one of our sushi rolls. By that time, toddler had run out of patience (hour and a half point) and my son took her home. They they brought his order. Maybe 20 minutes after that they brought my sashimi. At the two hour mark they brought the rest of the order and we asked for to-go boxes. A gal came by the table, don't know if she was a server or management, and apologized. I asked her if the problem was not enough kitchen help. She said they'd been trying to hire a chef for a year and can't find anyone. Did I know anyone? Cute. I told her it was a shame that they had so little regard for their servers that they would put them in this sort of situation. If they KNEW they were going to be swamped and can't accommodate it, then they should have made some choices - like limiting the number of tables they could serve at a time. But that eats into profits. What I found most amusing is that when we received the check, they suggest tips based on 15%, 20% etc. However, their recommended amounts is inclusive of the tax. read more

This is my daughter's favorite restaurant, and so it was her obvious choice for her birthday lunch with friends. As always, the food was fresh and was beautifully presented, and the hostess/waitress was attentive without being intrusive. Although none of the girls actually eat raw fish sushi, the menu offers a wide selection of vegetarian and cooked meat dishes. I highly recommend the Futomaki! read more

I'm sorry, if you think this is good sushi, if you think this is good Japanese food, then you have never had good sushi and you have never had good Japanese food. This is just another generic, mediocre, Chinese owned, Korean-owned, Cambodian owned, so-called Japanese restaurant, with a generic menu of frozen food, tired old fish and dry sushi rice at the sushi bar, and lousy service. The hostess seated me at the empty sushi bar, where every other seat had a mess from the previous customers. It was a pigsty, chunks of food, dirty napkins, dirty plates, spilled liquids. The waitress made no attempt to clear the places near me, but focused instead on the urgent task of filling the soy sauce bottles sitting on empty tables. I was served my first two orders of sushi. They were mediocre, mushy, tasteless, tired fish. Finally I asked someone to ask the waitress to clear the places next to me. After a while, that happened. I had three more orders of nigiri, and each was more of the same, mushy, tired fish on tired, dried out rice. I finished my beer, and set the empty bottle next to myself. The waitress picked up the bottle and walked away. Apparently she is not familiar with the expression, "would you like another beer?" So not only is she giving crappy service, but she's shorting her employer on the amount of the bill. "Japanese" restaurants are the new strip mall taco shop. The new Shakey's Pizza. They resemble but do not flatter the original cuisine they claim to represent. The chefs are untrained, heavy handed, and unknowledgeable. In another decade, I fear that quality Japanese restaurants will cease to exist completely in the US, and Americans will come to believe that a Philadelphia Roll (packed with cream cheese) actually represents Japanese cuisine. Sad. I may return on a weeknight after many months, or I may not. There's no particular reason to return, and that's a shame, because I have lived in Japan, and I love Japanese food. I guess I'm going to have to drive into the city for quality. read more

Love this place! Come here every time I'm in Bodega Bay as they have some of the very best Salmon Sashimi I've had! The dinning room is very nice and the server is very knowledgeable about the menu and options. Over all it's a very pleasant dinning experience and well worth the money! I'm not in Sebastopol often (living in Rohnert Park, I typically go to Hana Sushi), but I would definitely drive back for a lunch, dinner or special occasion for the wonderful food at Sushi Tozai! My family met here for a retirement lunch for my mom on a Saturday around 1pm. The restaurant was mostly empty, so we got great service (it filled up later on, but never got noisy). The ambiance is wonderful! The light wood makes it feel peaceful, like you're no longer on busy Main Street, Sebastopol. Since my parents are new-ish to sushi, I ordered us up a variety of rolls, tempura, pot stickers, and edamame. Everything was delicious! Each roll was delivered at its height of tastiness, with the rice slightly warm, the fish cold, or the tempura crispy and warm (NOT greasy). At the end of our meal, I noticed that they offered hand rolls by request (most of the nigiri could be done in hand roll form), so we went a bit crazy with the hand rolls too. We were so full of good food by the end, that we were all on a bit of a natural high driving home! Our waitress was super friendly and helpful, the setting tranquil, and the food fabulous. I would recommend it to anyone without reservation. read more

I hadn't been in awhile so we decided to go out for date night and no one was there to greet ( okay they were busy ) as we walked in, I noticed a special on the door. I asked the waiter what it was and it was like pulling teeth, I had to ask questions to finally get what it was. And I couldn't hear him at all. I'm allergic to avocados ( boo I know ) the waiter then told me that it was an additional $2.00 to not use avocados in my sushi roll. This time the service was not so great. We have eaten here for years and have always just put up with the slow service. Wait times for your order typically takes 30 minutes. However, last week we didn't have a lot of time so I thought it would be a good idea to call ahead and place our order, explaining that I didn't want it to-go, that we'd be eating there. Well, bad idea. This evidently insulted the proud sushi chefs because when we got to there we didn't receive our order until FIFTY minutes later and with 2 inquiries to our waiter as to what was going on. I even asked our waiter, "tell me honestly, did me calling ahead make them upset?", he said "yes, I think so. They are even mad at me because I keep pressing them for your order and they will not make it." I wasn't going to write this review, but now, looking at my bank statement I see that Sushi Tozai modified my transaction receipt by adding an extra $3 to it! Outrageous and dishonest! I left a $5 cash tip on the table for our waiter but either he, or the staff, didn't think this was enough (the bill was only $21.80) so they changed the 21 to 24. I guess they didn't think I'd notice such a small amount but I did -- I have my receipt, and am a meticulous bookkeeper. You'll be hearing from my bank, Sushi Tozai. Needless to say, we will never be back. read more

This used to be my favorite sushi bar in West Sonoma county. I took my girlfriend last night and was surprised by the poor quality of the meal. We opted for the green salad which @ $6.50 was nothing more than a tiny bowl of iceberg lettuce with a forgettable miso dressing. The veggie tempura was so so. I'm not a fan of tempura in the first place, so I probably shouldn't weigh in with an opinion. The lion king roll was also disappointing. It consisted of a poor quality salmon which was cooked and over sauced on top of sushi rice stuffed with fake crab smothered in mayonnaise. It was really blech, like sushi that might be from sushi bar run by McDonalds. Then came my unusual choice- instead of my usual raw sushi, I ordered the seafood teppan. It came out and I realized it was another mistake. The veggies were slathered in oil, the kind you'd find at a cheap Chinese restaurant-totally greasy, and the seafood was of a poor quality. The shrimp and scallops were chewy and overcooked. I wasn't sure what the other fish was, but after I while I figured it had to be salmon. It was fatty, mostly skin and about the poorest excuse for salmon I have ever tasted. I have lived in Sonoma county for 40 years and I get fresh wild salmon all summer, the point being I know this fish very well. So I can tell you with some authority, this was really lousy quality fish. So, I should've probably stayed with the raw fish, but...I'm not coming back. I hear this place has a new chef. All I can say is this place has really gone downhill. read more

While the nigiri was fresh and well plated, my son's chicken teriyaki lunch plate was horrible. It was bland and tasteless, plus they forgot the rice and he had to ask for it. While waiting, we noticed a highway of ants on the sushi bar. My son complained about the chicken and they took it off the bill. The trivial part was, since it was a combination gig, they added the soup and salad to the total. While I have no problem paying for something that was indeed consumed, I found that to be incredibly petty. Especially after the bugs on the table and omitting part of his meal. I love the Sebastopol Roll (except I substitute Tuna for Salmon). I come here at least 1x a month for that treat. My 10 y.o. son loves the avocado rolls, Prawn Martini and potsticker. Everyone who works here is delightful. One of our regular dining spots in Sebastopol. read more
