I could hear the sizzling from the grill, smell the food cooking, and by that point I was more than ready to eat. Our server was really nice and gave us a bunch of recommendations. Everything sounded good, but I ended up going with the Pork Belly Yakisoba. This dish was packed with flavor. The noodles had that smoky, slightly charred taste, and they were coated in just enough sauce to make every bite rich. The sauce brought a nice balance of savory, a little sweetness, and plenty of umami that soaked into the noodles. The pork belly was easily the best part. It was incredibly tender and juicy, with just enough fat that it practically melted in your mouth. Every piece had those caramelized edges that added even more flavor. Then you get the crunch from the cabbage and bean sprouts, the freshness from the scallions, and the little nutty flavor from the sesame that tied everything together. Hahaha I'd definitely come back. This is one of those dishes that sticked with me long after I left.

The pandan coconut mochi donut holes I chose were probably the highlight. They were crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside, and there was ample sauce for dipping. I think some people would find the service top notch here--constantly checking in on me and keeping water refilled. I guess that came with a cost: 3% service charge automatically applied, and the server proactively brought over a digital payment system, so the 18% tip I selected calculated off the total leading to what was essentially a tip of 23%.

Then wiped his fingers on a dirty rag and proceeded to finish making the bowls. A short time later, we were served that same bowl of ramen. Watching an employee use their bare hands and mouth on food that was then served to a customer was extremely concerning and completely unacceptable from a food safety and hygiene standpoint. It ruined the experience and made us lose confidence in the restaurant's food handling practices. I hope management takes this seriously, retrains their staff on proper food safety procedures, and ensures this doesn't happen to anyone else.

To drink, I started with the white lotus, which did not come to play! It was very strong and barely sweet- maybe a bit much for me, but if that's your vibe, you'll like it. Appetizers included the Thai papaya salad and imperial rolls. The first was solid and the rolls were extra hot and crispy. I enjoyed the perilla leaves that they were wrapped in. Next came the garlic rice with whole roasted cloves of garlic, sauteed mushrooms, everything wings, and chili cauliflower. The rice was super fluffy and garlicky, but the miso butter mushrooms are not to be missed! We definitely drank a little bit of the sauce. The wings could have been a little crispier, but I really liked the sweet and spicy Korean style sauce. The crispy chili cauliflower was sweet and actually tasted a bit like orange chicken- we demolished it and this may have been my favorite dish of the whole night! Finally, we had the mentaiko kimchi udon, steak kalbi, and ordered one of their burgers on the side because why not. We agreed that the bonito flakes on the udon covered up the kimchi flavor a bit and wished it was stronger, but I liked the creaminess of the sauce. The steak kalbi had a great flavor and sauce, but I do think it could've been more tender. The burger was as good as it looked and indeed one of the best I've had in Chicago. I loved the balance between sweet and savory, and all of the flavors were balanced very well. We ended the meal with the seasonal dessert, which was sticky rice with strawberries and fermented rice. I thought it made for a refreshing end, but we agreed that it would've been even better served cold rather than hot. Overall, this was a very fun and great experience with delicious food! I would absolutely return and recommend paying a visit.

Sharon, Janelle, and I decided on an impromptu sushi night after getting held up on a late conference call. This restaurant seems to be attempting to straddle the nightclub/restaurant thing. I suppose it succeeds, but the flashing videos and excessive volume of the hipster tunes were a bit much. We brought a bottle of Riesling with us, and upon finally greeting us the server's first words were, "You want me to open that?" We immediately ordered two appetizers to share, the Sashimi and the spicy tuna. Both appetizers were fine. The tuna lived up to its billing in terms of heat factor, so we were thankful we had brought a sweet wine. After finishing the appetizers, we waited close to 15 minutes before our server returned to clear the plates and take our order for entrees. He seemed less than enthusiastic. We went with the Sting Ray, a Tempura shrimp, jalapeno, scallion combination which was excellent. The Five-0 was the first time I had had sushi with bacon as a component. I must say it worked well. For the most part, I think this is a great concept in terms of food quality. We were surely underwhelmed with our server. The hipster attitudes here and the high volume are definitely not ideal for those expecting an intimate night of conversation. But it is what it is. read more

Meh. Meh. Two mehs; one for each star. I'll begin with saying the atmosphere is pretty nice, but there may be too many tables, which made navigation to the bathroom somewhat difficult. Once I got there, I realized it was being used. No biggie, except I was literally five inches from someone eating dinner. I went with two friends and the BYOB aspect, as many heave mentioned, was nice. We got the tempura green beans, but had to order two since the first order was cold. The gentleman who served us rushed another round over. We also had edamame, which was standard, and the veggie potstickers. The potstickers were my favorite thing of the night. We each ordered a plain roll and one p the fancier options. All three "fancies" we're meh. I ended up picking the maguro and super white tuna out since the rice was a bit hard and the roll as a whole had too much cilantro and was just meh. Sorry for all the mehs again, but it's the best word I can use to describe the bland tasteless dinner. Again, the staff was awesome but $90 for two mehs, especially when there are so many much better sushi places, was a bit of a bummer. This place has loads of high reviews, but I won't be back to see what I missed. read more

First of all, I have to say that, in my opinion, Sushi X has the best sushi in the city. They have very unique rolls and you get a lot for your money - AND they are absolutely delicious. Tonight a friend of mine who used to live in Chicago and is visiting and I ordered sushi that we picked up and brought home. When we got home, we realized that even though our reciept had the correct order, they made a mistake and gave us the wrong order. We were so dissapointed - but it was late and we were so hungry, so we started to eat what they gave us. It was good, but just not what we had ordered and had wanted. I called and explained what had happened, and even though we were out of their delivery range, they appologized for the mix up and delivered the 3 rolls that we had orginally ordered. Now that's great customer service!!! We couldn't have been happier, and will be back soon for sure! read more

SUSHI SCAM!!! no prices on the menu. service is awful!! and very very slow!! its as if the workers their do not care to provide the customers with even the basics. chop sticks soy sauce.. are you kidding me should never have to ask for these things after the sushi has hit the table. oh and the half price rolls is only on sunday and monday now, but i would not waste your time the prices even at half price are only a dollar off normal prices at other places like coast which is far and way better hands down go to Coast!!! sushi x is dark you cant see the food the sushi bar is hidden... as long as it takes to get the rolls at sushi x i could swear i saw them bring jewel bags full of sushi and reselling it. i thought their sushi tasted like i had it before. save your self the trouble and price and cut out the middle man go straight to jewel read more

All i have to say this is a must go to in West Town. Minus the hideous building, the food is great. We went for dinner on Saturday night, we sat right down and gazed their extensive menu. I fancy myself as a big eater, and am always a little skeptical when a place boasts of a "mega" roll, but they got it right, hot damn these rolls were huge. Before i ordered i found the 13-17dollar rolls a tad steep, but you will get your moneys worth. The fish was fresh, inventive rolls, i mean who puts bacon and prosciutto with sushi. If you are looking for a change, and want to step out of the TORO, or Coast box, give this place a try. BYOB is great, my only qualm is have proper stemware, not a fan of drinking a great bottle of sake out of a small bucket glass. read more

Excellent place for Sushi! I have to admit that I probably can't call myself a Sushi connoisseur because I do not dive into the sashimi aspect of this type of dining very often but I do love maki rolls. This restaurant is not elaborate or fancy...but the sushi is exceptional! The price is also very reasonable in comparison to places like Sushi Wabi without compromising quality or taste. They always have a unique special..the lastest had yellow tail with mango...very good! My boyfriend and I have done carry-out at this place more often than not and then we can create our own romantic style evening with wine and fabulous food. Try it out. read more

The best fish in all of Chicago... short and sweet. What I like? Check out the following Honey roll, Lava roll, Spicy Tako, Spicy Scallop... yum, yum I've been coming here for a number of years and have eaten all over the city. This place still has the best sushi out there. Not quite the see and be seen place, so if you're looking for that look elsewhere. But if you're looking for a chill, loungy place to eat with friends, and BYOB... this is your place. The cat's out of the bag though, so check it out on a weeknight cuz they don't take reservations. Sushi x is my favorite hidden gem in Chicago. The rolls are mouth wateringly delicious. Food: the Godzilla is a go-to. There were a lot of options for people who don't eat sushi.. My friend ordered a curried tilapia and loved it. The rolls aren't traditional, but they're del icious, so who cares? Service: personable, reliable, and kind. If you are truly a fan of sushi steer clear of this place! Virtually all the rolls contain something fried or are drenched in mayonnaise-y sauces. Even the ginger dressing is made from mayo - hello calories! Sushi is supposed to be light and fresh fish - not grease and fat. Ick. Even the miso soup is off - there is tofu and seaweed there but the broth tastes like straight up sodium. No true flavor. I have been getting sushi X delivery for years but there is one dish that stands out for me and its the spicy tuna salad. I love that its basically the inside of a spicy tuna roll on a salad of greens topped with avocado. The best thing is that it is an entire meal for $9 there is soo much tuna on top. I have to admit that there have been some issues with a couple of orders over the years but the customer service is great. I think I'm in love. I came here last Thursday with a couple girlfriends after a friend recommended it to us. Our waitress recommended we get the Godzilla (I normally don't like cream cheese in rolls, but trust me, this was good), Thai stick, and double stack. They were really flavorful and creative.
