Came to Zenmaru for the two hour sushi making class via Groupon. You have to call the restaurant to make a reservation. There is a voucher tax that they charge when you redeem your Groupon ($14.28). I did find this a bit strange because this was the first time I was charged a "voucher tax" and I have used Groupon many times. There were 7 participants and 1 instructor. We got to make three rolls- California roll, salmon skin roll, and rainbow roll. The instructor was knowledgeable and taught us step-by-step how to make each of the rolls and went into the details of how he makes each of the ingredients. Now that I'm working downtown, I'm trying to experience some of the local Pine Ave restaurants. I've walked by this place many times and decided to try it out today. I ordered the teriyaki chicken bowl with brown rice, and I'm less than impressed. Very bland in taste and appearance,and served in a white styrofoam container. I've never ordered a teriyaki chicken bowl that didn't come with veggies. I guess I shouldn't assume that they all come with them. The young lady at the counter was lovely and helpful. The space itself was very clean and orderly, but just as bland as my teriyaki chicken bowl. I would expect nicer surroundings for a sushi place. read more

This was my first time in this place...and the last time here. Usually I go to Mitaki, on 4th. St. But I was close this place and wanted to try it... total disappointing . Danbury and Mitaki has a better Japanese food. Udon soup tasteless, no veggies. Only water with some color and a few pieces of chicken 1 or 2 ounces only. The no crunchy roll. I ordered from Postmates tonight and the appetizer Dynamite Scallops for $9 was complete crap! I'm assuming the man at counter may have been an owner but I hope I'm wrong. I approached, stated, "never been here before!" as to the universal clue to 'don't know your menu'. He clearly needs to quit working there as I appeared to be bothering him. Red flags everywhere and yet... I ordered one beer and one roll. The beer was warm and the roll was small and awful. Definitely had cream cheese in it but when asked, "no, no cream cheese"... I legit, couldn't eat it. Choked down two pieces, cried inside for wasting for $20 and went to Burger King. They used previously cooked steak in my teriyaki beef bowl. Used to be very good. Done this more than once! You know when you don't here the grill cooking and no chopping, how did they cube my steak? You can imagine how tough and tasteless it tastes compared to fresh grilled. Ive given them my money for the last time. AVOID ZEN MARU! Perfect spot for quick to-go sushi. Nothing special about the interior but there is seating available outside if you choose to dine in. Service is quick, efficient and pleasant. I usually order the Island roll or choose from the "specials" that they have going at the moment. They also have a variety of bottled beer and sake, perfect for an at home date night. read more

I used the EAT 24 app to order sushi up to my hotel room. I was very impressed at how beautiful my sashimi and sushi roll looked in the Styrofoam take out containers. I started with the seaweed salad. It was refreshing and delicious. For dinner I ordered the hot night out roll and the Kobe sashimi. My roll was delicately prepared. It traveled well too - check out my picture! It was spicy and crunchy - which isn't usually what I think of when I have sushi. It was totally legit. I'd eat this every day. The Kobe Sashimi was quite the assortment. I'm not smart enough to know the different kinds of fish here - but I know it was tasty AF! I do think that shrimp was a cop out though. IJS. I'm not sure what the restaurant ambiance is like. Or the service. But I do know that if you want sushi in your mouth, but you don't want to leave the house or your room, don't let that stop you. I'm a regular here. I really enjoy the food. I wasn't planning on doing a review, but thought I should since I go in here so often. I only have 1 pic of my left overs! Sorry! My fav here is the Chicken Yakisoba. It's made with cabbage, carrots onions, noodles and chicken. It tastes amazing with Sriracha! I also like their chicken and veggie bowl and the California rolls. I tried their Salmon lunch special, but it was just ok. I didn't get full. There was very little salmon. They have brown rice but it's extra which is sad. The owner is rude and grouchy. I don't like the way he talks to the new girls taking orders. He knows I'm a regular and go in for lunch and dinner sometimes, but still he pretends he's never seen me in there. Whatever. They don't have diet sodas or fountain drinks that's a big 0 star! I go in because I like the food, especially when the tall guy is cooking. He gives good portions. Sushi Zen Maru may not be the best sushi restaurant I have been to, but definitely better than average. Their classic rolls are tasty and their sushi rice are especially well done - always at the best texture, not too dry, not too soft, not cold and complement the fish well. My favorite items from them include Salmon Lover, Rainbow Roll, Philadelphia Roll, and the nigiris. They also have BOGO & other types of "Happy Hour" specials pretty often for Postmates/Uber delivery, so I recommend trying them out. read more

Disappointing first visit here, and probably last. I often order sashimi salads when visiting sushi restaurants. I ordered one here and it was such a let down. Picture a handful of dull green iceberg lettuce with some sashimi thrown on top. It was so boring and drab in an industry of awesome, creative sushi restaurants in the area. I just tried this place today. Overall the food was good but there were a couple things that should be changed. Order consisted of - Cali roll, spicy tuna roll, veggie egg rolls & spicy edamame. Total around $35. 1st - why would you Ever put hot food on top of fresh cold sushi!? This should be in a separate bag altogether. It made our sushi warm. Who wants that? 2nd - the spicy edamame was just chili paste mixed with edamame so not a real spicy edamame. And way too much. We ended up rinsing off the paste and it was much better. I'd go with regular next time. 3rd - there's a surprise $1.50 charge if you're using a debit card to pay. This was mentioned only after the card was already being changed. Should just pay cash instead. Also would've tipped more if this was not the case. Other than that the sushi was pretty good - although could use a bit more avocado in the Cali roll. Pros: Great location in Downtown, friendly staff Cons: Small pieces (poke), limited options for poke I dropped by ZenMaru on Pine in the heart of Downtown Long Beach on a Friday afternoon for a late lunch for a to-go order. Not much of a line when I went in and service was pretty quick. It's a great location and they get a lot of foot traffic from the local businesses and surrounding neighborhood. I ended up getting their Poke Special because I was curious about how it would measure up to the other Poke options nearby, so this review will be based strictly on their Poke. There are some other things that can be highlighted about Zenmaru - such as their Sushi Classes where they teach you how to make Sushi - however, this review is limited to my experience with ordering Poke. As mentioned, I ordered the Poke to go. I had a choice between Tuna or Salmon, and I went with Salmon over brown rice, which I would normally default to on all of my Poke orders. The ladies who took my order were friendly and my order came out quickly because there wasn't much of a line, just 1 other person before me. Unlike other Poke places, you don't really have a say in what types of protein to put on your order other than salmon or tuna nor the makeup of the Poke bowl itself. The slices of sushi were cut pretty small, so I didn't quite taste much of the fish. The seasoning mixture was pretty good, but I didn't quite care much for the carrots & cabbage that was mixed in - the combination didn't quite work for me. Overall, I believe there's more to Zenmaru that I've yet to discover. I'd like to try out some of their sushi and the class they offer on how to make the sushi, but for now, I'm rating them based on my experience with the Poke. There are other Poke options in the area and in my opinion, Zenmaru doesn't do enough to distinguish themselves amongst those other options if you are looking for Poke. read more

10 months I've lived 1 street away from this fast food Japanese Sushi & Grill quick-stop & have never gone, but tonight decided to pick up food Togo for the 1st time. The place is small but cozy & kept clean (very important to me). The menu is posted on the outside of the venue, & also right when you 1st walk in above the register where you order. There is also many blown up pictures of popular dishes @ specials that are shown right by the register. The cashier was a very friendly young woman who answered all my questions about what was the best small tuna entree to get. I decided on the Spicey Tuna Roll (consists of spicy tuna & cucumber)-$5.49 & a Edamame appetizer-$1.99. I got 8 decently sized rolls & a small Togo box full of Edamame, good deal I thought! You pretty much get what you pay for, I was psyched about my under $10 quick dinner choice until.... I attempted using my chopsticks to eat my rolls but failed miserably when the first 3 rolls fell completely apart. I was hungry so I picked up the pieces with my hands & will say that it still tasted pretty yummy! The edamame was hot (which I love), but also lacked ANY salt (which I hate). All in all, I liked my food but didn't love it, but it was under $10 like I said so it's okay. My husband and I took the sushi-making class here last week. Michael (the owner/instructor) was fantastic -- very friendly, knowledgable, patient and encouraging! I had always wanted to learn to make sushi rolls and after taking this class I feel very confident in my abilities. We made three rolls (California roll, shrimp tempura roll and rainbow roll) and they were all delicious and fresh-tasting. I wasn't able to eat all of what I made in class, so I stored it just as Michael instructed (for optimal freshness) and it was just as delicious the next day. If you're ever in downtown Long Beach, make sure you stop by this small hole in the wall restaurant! The food is delicious and I've never been disappointed whenever I ate here for a quick lunch. Parking might be a hassle but there is a structure just around the corner and I believe you may be able to get one or two hours free. The parking is literally around the corner, not far at all. Service is great, all the workers are friendly. The restrooms are clean, which is a good indication of the cleanliness of the restaurant. Price is cheap but the food is awesome! read more

Went here for the sushi making class (used groupon-2hr class). It was nothing short of AWESOME! Our instructor Michael was super informative! He really encouraged learning the ins and outs of sushi making so we could make it at home. He taught us where to buy products, how to make sushi rice, how to make crab meat that goes in sushi rolls, and all that goes into making a great roll! We made 3 different rolls (California, salmon skin, and a shrimp avocado roll). We also had a saki tasting included & we got 4 rounds of Saki (all different & delicious)! In general this was the most underwhelming and tasteless sushi I've ever eaten. They need to improve the taste of their rice.

A) mediocre food at best. My few trips here have always been disappointing. I'm local so I try to forgive in the name of supporting small businesses, but it's still "meh". B) weird service. They have menus like a normal restaurant, but you don't know if you should sit or order first. I've had it both ways here but it's always awkward. C) this is the kicker for me. It's not normal to pass along credit card processing charges to the customer for a $20+ order. I understand this for small purchases, but doing this for all CC purchases is just plain weird. That's not how it works! Just go all cash or raise the price if you can't handle the processing fees! I'm the end, I'm not surprised it's always near empty. I wish it wasn't the case! read more
