First time at Sushiya and have to say well done. The sushi was great as well as the service!

This is a small sushi restaurant that had good reviews so my partner and I decided to eat there for our anniversary weekend. First off, my partner and I sat down and asked for water to start off with while I search for sake. They bring out one water. My partner leaves for about 20 minutes because of work, But it takes that long for me to flag the owner to finally get my sake order in. The waiters all together ignored me until my partner came back. We ordered a bit of everything and it seemed that most of it (not all) missed the mark flavor-wise. Sea urchin - really delicious. Best I've had in The Valley. (5) Oysters-good but a little salty (4) Miso soup-flavorless. Did not finish. How do you mess up miso soup? (1) Calamari - tough, chewy, actually bit into it and pulled on many of them. (1) Butterfly roll - bland (1) Sashimi roll - bland (1) Nigori sake - excellent (5) Had high hopes. Missed the mark. Been going here for 7 years and it's always been the best sushi I've had. I'm always disappointed by the other alleged 5 star sushi places and I always spend more for low quality food. But not here. This place is always great quality and prices. I love the sushi masters behind the bar, highly recommend talking to them! Going here isn't a mistake. The nigiri/sashimi is always so fresh and yum. Slow, slow and slower is the speed of this sushi place. We ordered food via phone and they stated it was going to be an hour and a half. I understand being busy but then we show up and the place has empty tables and everyone was moving slow inside. The order ending up taking almost two and a half hours. My go to sushi restaurant when it comes to service and food quality. I only go there during happy hour but that is just because of the deals. Also, back to back happy hour 4-7 then again from 7-10. Both with different specials. Small Asahi, salmon kama, and the salmon nigiri (sake) is my default. The ASU roll, Arizona roll, SoftShell crab roll....I can go on and on. I've been avoiding writing this review but, here it is. I dined in with a friend for happy hour two weeks ago and was very displeased with their customer service. I ordered the salmon Kama and the salmon skin roll. The salmon Kama was fine (but hon machis on ray and the 101 is better). The salmon skin roll was the problem. Most sushi places have the salmon skin roll prepared with baked salmon skin or if it comes fried you can request it baked. This has never been a problem for me before and I always go to sushi places. I requested the salmon skin baked and my waitress looked at me like I asked her to buy me a new house or something. She looked so annoyed and irritated. I also asked for it with no rice and watched her write no rice on the sushi paper, she was also irritated about that request. The chef and other waiters made a big deal about the roll preparation from across the room (this is a small place so it was a loud conversation). Once the roll arrived, it had rice so I kindly said I ordered it with no rice and that was when s*** hit the fan. The chef seemed pissed and the waitress was pissed and everyone was just making the biggest deal out of it. The restaurant was crowded and I was just sitting there. They finally made me a new roll and that was when it got worse. I could literally hear my waitress talking trash about me to the hostesses/other waitresses in the back and about my order. This place is small, sound carries people. I was so uncomfortable and wanted to cry quite frankly. Don't s*** talk your customers in the back because they ordered something that only slightly inconvenienced you. Also, if it was such an inconvenience, just say it can't be prepared? Great hour hour prices but not worth it. Unless you don't mind being trash talked of course. If you want good cheap sushi, go to orient sushi on Elliot and McQueen (I think). read more

I wish were able to rate places on service separately. The sushi is great but service was just horrible tonight and no excuse for it. I would understand if they were busy and running around like crazy people but it was pretty dead tonight. Two young teens were trying to be our servers. I didn't see the woman I usually see, whom I assume is the owner? The girls never verified our order and never once checked on us. My friends order wasn't correct and they were surprised when she said she wanted what she originally ordered. She didn't touch the food she didn't order. Then we never got refills. I only got a refill when the girl brought us our check. It literally took them an hour to finally come and take our cards. Again. Not busy at all. Anytime I would see one of the girls walking towards us, we would try to get their attention. Instead they would look to the ground and go to another table. I was very disappointed. I've been here often and even on busy weekends and never ever had this bad of an experience. It sucks because the sushi is delicious and prices are fair. But the service is most definitely slacking. read more

Tasty and fresh sushi right on the Chandler-Gilbert border. The rolls I suggest that are bomb.com include: Las Vegas Roll: Cream cheese, eel, avocado, crab and shrimp... Deep fried. Need I say more? A few dunks of soy sauce and this baby is delish. Dragon Roll: Crab, cucumber, eel, and avocado. Just the right amount of freshness. You also can't go wrong with the ASU roll, Crazy Shrimp roll, or the Ladybug. The sashimi I've had here has been great, too. I love this place! My boyfriend and I have been going here for years, and the quality has remained on point throughout. Despite having many sushi places near our house, we travel a bit to come here at least once a month. The service is always very friendly, and the food is fresh! Our favourite rolls aside from the traditional stuff are the albacore roll, geisha, and the Arizona roll - however their fish is perfect on their own and over rice as well. read more

I work a couple doors down and have served a few employees from Sushiya. I'm vegetarian but I used to love sushi before transitioning over. I expressed my dietary restrictions and the employees told me to stop by and give it a try, that they could accommodate me. I went during happy hour on a weekday, and I was pleasantly surprised! Edamame was on happy hour (my absolute favorite), and it was delicious. I also tried their spicy edamame (not on happy hour) on a separate occasion and loved it, but it was definitely spicy!! I got the vegetarian rolls as my main course and loved it. I've been back several times just for these rolls!! My only criticism is that the rolls can be inconsistent in the avocado/cucumber ratio; some days I get a heaping serving of avocado in each roll, other days it seems to be mostly cucumber with only a smidge of avocado. It's delicious either way, but I do prefer avocado over cucumber. I'm regards to service, I seem to always have the same younger gal serving me. She's very sweet and always takes great care of me. After her serving me only once, she's remembered me and my orders. Nick, one of the sushi chefs, is also great. The owner has also checked on me on multiple visits to ensure my experience is up to par. All in all, I have to talk myself into eating at home most days because Sushiya is always beckoning me to return with their fair prices, great service, and delicious food. Sushi here is good but unfortunately not worth the hassle every time we go. Maybe it's because we order off the happy hour menu, and also the service wasn't very good. When we get the bill we were overcharged for drinks twice now. Be weary when ordering sake or the house wine and you may get attitude back when disputing it. I've been coming to Sushiya exclusively since 2012. Every time I come in I'm promptly greeted (sometimes personally, depending on how recently I had been in) and seated almost immediately. I've tried nearly every item on the menu and have never been disappointed by the choice of cut or composition of a specific role. I've recommended this restaurant to every individual who's ever asked me to recommend a sushi joint - even to people asking in another city (IT'S THAT GOOD). I was very disappointed with the service. We waited by the door for at least 5 minutes before someone attended us and gave us a table. There was no sign to indicate whether or not we seat ourselves. Once we got seated, it took forever for someone to take our order, only to take over 30 minutes to get our food. This was on a Tuesday night too. We go here about twice a month as a family. I have had hit or misses with this place. We have had terrible service with no recourse and then times where everything is great. Be prepared to have at least three servers. No refills or checkups either. The place is extremely loud. You typically seat yourself. I am a sashimi person, and love the presentation and the fresh portions. I have, as of recently, experienced thin and subpar entrees. I typically go with the chirashi, spicy chirashi, or 12 piece sashimi. You will NEVER get consistency here. Some days it is very delectable and everything is great, then other days the rice is old and stale. The sashimi cuts are either great portion and thick or scraps of fish. The Nigiri is very good, IMO. The Maki rolls are decent. Have yet to find one I crave. They sincerely lack an authentic touch or sauce to them. Some artistry, or a signature to them. They are more rice than fish or flavor. Some favorites are the Lion King and the Sunrise roll. We go here often because of the decent prices, family atmosphere, and potential for great food. I have yet to find my favorite sushi place in the east valley so this place is it for now FYI I go to Temari in Gilbert on date nights because the atmosphere is more read more

This is definitely one of my new favorite sushi restaurants! It was clean with good service. The miso soup was very flavorful and yummy. I also got the tsunami roll which was a new flavor for me and really good as well! The popcorn shrimp roll was SOOO good. Highly recommend that. Can't wait to be back to try more. read more

This place is right by my house. I was one of their first customers years ago when they opened. But I can surely say, I won't be coming there again nor would I recommend this place to others. They would not take my reservation when I called, but when I got there, the table of 7 I needed was reserved. They made me wait for another table for 20 minutes eventhough they had a table available as the reserved party was late. So, even though I was there first, they wouldn't give me the reserved table, but Sushiya supposedly do not take reservations. Be consistent! i've been coming to this place forever... and time and time again i've gotten the same waitress. I get the half asian brunette with the awkward tone. last time she sort of messed up my order, not too but but while they were making it the shaved headed stud came from the back and made me forget about everything. for 20 good minutes i felt 17 again. he gave me something i haven't felt in a long time. me and my husband had never really gotten that spark back snd it was him that got it back to me. Sushiya is close to where we moved - thought I'd give them a try since they had decent recent reviews I order one of their lunch specials - 7 pieces of sushi plus spicy tuna roll ($12.50) -the Spicy Tuna roll was different then anywhere I've had - the tuna was actually on top of a cucumber roll (but it tasted good) -7 pieces of sushi included: tuna, yellowtail, shrimp, crab, eel, salmon and 1 other...decent as well Overall my experience was good and I'd recommend this restaurant read more

The good: Good food! The bad: Waiter handled the drinking cups by the top edge where guests put their mouths to drink. Found a hair on one of the dining plates. Place is pretty dirty, the maroon wall is in need of badly being painted! The worst part of seeing the red light fixtures over the prep table full of dust!!! Full of dust.
