Wanted to order food from the happy hour menu, but happy hour had ended since it took so long for the server to come back. Food was meh. The crispy rice on the spicy tina bites was too crispy and there wasn't a ton of flavor. Salmon BLT was super salty. Salmon picatta was just ok. Have came here a couple times with boyfriend for date night/ lunch date. We loved it the first time so we came here with our pup. Weirdly they allow dogs but don't have any water bowls so you have to walk outside for your pup to drink water which is a little inconvenient. Service was good but not very personable. He was just there to do his job and also made a little smart remark about the water for our pup. Overall, 6/10. We ordered the clam chowder and would give this a 9/10. Would definitely order again. We got the scallops and this I would give a 7/10. They were slightly overcooked but still very delicious. The shrimp tacos were an 7/10 as well. Came for brunch. Ambiance is nice, had high hopes. Unfortunately that's about where it ended. Waiter started off fairly impersonal but wasn't really a deal breaker. Unfortunately basically all the food we ordered was not great either. The clam chowder was clearly homemade but watery, severely lacking in flavor, and basically all potatoes. Salmon sandwich was too fishy eat. Caesar was very basic, no personality, nothing special. Breakfast burritos was ok. Waiter disappeared after food hit the table, no one really checked up on us until we were basically done and had to ask several times for refill on our water before someone finally came. Wah wah. Fun pre-Thanksgiving fall day lunch at Riviera House today! My significant other and I were meeting a friend coming from the OC, and looking for a place about halfway, and Riviera House was perfect for us. The space has an "indoor/outdoor" vibe, which we loved. We had reservations and were hoping for outdoor seating. I called when reservations were made and spoke to Sam, who said there should be no issues with the request. Great first impression of the restaurant and staff! We arrived before our friend and were greeted by Neal. He seated us right away, and took care of us through the afternoon and could not have been more accommodating, kind, and fun! Two of us got tuna melts with different sides, and one got the strawberry feta salad with salmon. We all enjoyed our food, along with drinks. Riviera House is one of those spots you keep a secret... but I have to give them their flowers. We were immediately welcomed by the ambiance and open space (you have the choice to sit fully inside, partially inside with space heaters above to stay consistent temp - great touch, or fully outside on the couches or chairs they have in the sun). We sat in the partial inside section which I would highly recommend. We did make a reservation as well because we had a group of 5. THE FOOD: 10/10... EVERYTHING. We had a good variation of things including steak and eggs, breakfast burrito, berry waffles, strawberry salad, Brussels sprouts, and "make your own chilaquiles"?!?!!! I personally had the steak and eggs which had a bunch of flavor from all the ingredients they added, and a nice touch with the fresh sourdough. Not your typical bland steak and 2 eggs on the side... I also made a point to try every one else's food at my table because it looked so good. I don't give 10/10 ratings lightly, and neither does my family. Especially from my family that can be a bit critical about food. Respectfully. But the table next to us has a special request for the salad which they completely messed up also. Then I Thought I'd try their seafood tower. At $59 I was disappointed. 6 small oyster , 6 shrimp and ceviche. You'll want to pass on this one And the bar staff must have been busy as I didn't get my drink until after the entree was finished. We were looking for a place not far from the Coast Botanical Gardens and that took reservations as we were a party of 7. Riviera House hit the mark. Service was great with a primary wait person attending to us but a whole team of people helping serve and cleanup. The setting was nice with open air and a street side patio. Parking on the street was scarce but there is a big pay to park lot just a block away. Food was good! We shared the eggplant dip appetizer and it was served with delicious bread. I enjoyed the California Benedict with a nice mound of shrimp. I felt the hollandaise sauce was a little skimpy but they brought me extra. The rosemary potatoes on the side are delicious! The rest of the table had a variety of items including the breakfast burrito, chicken & waffles, triple berry French toast, avocado toast, clam chowder, tuna stacks and the basic eggs with bacon. Everyone enjoyed their meal. We had several drinks; I had the white sangria, which was served with crushed ice (think sonic ice) tasted great but it was a lot of ice and not much Sangria -- my only disappointment. You can sit outside or inside here, it's never too busy and it's just giving you nice beach town vibes that are clean. There are a ton of different happy hour food specials, and drink specials and taco Tuesday specials and different daily specials. Today we got asada fries and we clean the plate. My husband and I started dining here just before lock down happened and were absolutely devastated to think we wouldn't be able to eat here during the pandemic but they opened their doors and would pull together our favorite jar batched cocktails for us. The Army Navy and #19 is what kept us going for months through lock down. Their staff was always so accommodating and still is every time we walk in to this day. Staff has changed but the service has remained steadfast. The food and drinks are always superlatively on point. Some of our favorite dishes are the Chowder Tots, Crispy Brussel sprouts, Ahi Poke Nacho's and the Cali Sandwich is my husband's favorite. We started with a bowl of Clam chowder that was ok, flavor was just ok,it had more Potatoes and not enough of Can Clams, not fresh. Coconut Shrimp was ok, the shrimp was dark in color not the golden color we are use to, might have been due to old cooking oil that wasn't changed. The Hot and spicy Margarita was not bad. Every time I come here, I have a great experience with delicious food and amazing drinks. On my most recent visit, I came specifically for a drink I loved before, but I couldn't remember the name. I described it to a few staff members, and while they tried their best, it wasn't until the bartender came over that we figured it out. I pulled up a photo on my phone, and she immediately recognized it and made it for me perfectly. I really appreciated how the entire staff went out of their way to help me track down that drink...it was absolutely worth it. Pretty awful experience. I went here one time and it took a long time for service, but decided to give it another try. We told the hostess we wanted to just have a glass of wine, we had our baby with us, and she told us to go sit at the bar. Before we even sat down the bartender yelled at us from across the bar that we can't sit there with the baby. It was very harsh and we were literally just told to sit there by the hostess. Could have been handled very differently, rather than yelling at us instead of serving us. I live in the area, often looking for a spot, but will never come back and will not recommend. Yep. This is the place to be. Excellent food, cold beer, and cool specialty drinks. Great atmosphere both inside and out. My girl and I each had the smashburger. She protein style and I on a bun. They were full of fresh goodness. Not too sloppy, but you'll still get a chance to lick the fingers. I know, etiquette dictates that napkins should be used, but how fun is that! I mean, I wasn't wearing a tuxedo, and besides there weren't any finger bowls. So on to the tongue they went. As they should be. The beer helped that along for sure. The servers at Riviera are very friendly. Ours was exceptionally so. She handled our party of five flawlessly. All the while with a smile. Do yourself a favor, stop in for a smile and a meal. Both are worth the price of admission. Quick Tip: Though there is a fair amount of parking in the vicinity, it can get swallowed up quickly. I made an online reservation for Mother's Day two weeks ago. When I arrived today, the hostess implied that the indoor dining room was full and that our only options were to sit outside or in a corner right next to the entrance. When I questioned why we were being given these options despite having a reservation, the hostess was extremely rude. She claimed I should have added notes to my reservation or called ahead to request an indoor table. However, the online system doesn't even offer an option to choose between indoor or outdoor seating. She essentially blamed me for not requesting an indoor table in advance. At the time, there were two or three unoccupied tables inside. I assumed they were assigned to other parties, so rather than making a scene, I agreed to sit outside even though it was very windy. By the time we finished eating and paid the bill, those tables were still vacant; in fact, our waitress even took a break and sat in one of the booths! I mentioned this to another waiter who was filling in. He was very sympathetic and admitted he was confused as to why so many customers were seated outside while the inside remained empty. He ended up comping our two drinks and said he would notify the manager. Aside from the hospitality of that one waiter, my experience at Riviera House was horrible. The hostess clearly needs additional training on how to properly manage table assignments and, more importantly, how to communicate with guests professionally. To top it off, the food wasn't even that good. I generally never leave reviews, but I felt like I had to document how this experience ruined our Mother's Day celebration. read more
