The shrimp and grits dish we ordered was unreal, it had us scraping the plate for every last bit. The cornbread comes out steaming in a cast iron skillet, attempting to melt the small mountain of butter that tops it. It was something to dream about. I came to this place relying on all the positive reviews here. I thought with as many as there are and with how many people were willing to wait hours for seating, it had to be great. Well, at least for me, the food was ok. I came in at around 7pm after circling for parking (parking is really tough to find nearby) and sat at the counter. It was just me for dinner. The service was fine tho maybe a tad slow. The server behind the bar was kept busy. I ordered the pork rinds app and the lunch box (fried chicken). The rinds were pretty good. Not greasy, and the sauce that comes with it was really good. The fried chicken was moist and overall decent but under seasoned. Maybe my plate got missed because the sweet potato fries I ordered also came unsalted. There were no salt shakers at the table either. I ended up using the mambo sauce from the rinds to help season the rest of the meal. A biscuit was served with the meal. No butter. No honey. Nothing just the biscuit which was fine. I just wasn't motivated to eat the whole thing because it just wasn't worth the calories. Overall I left probably half of everything on the plate. Didn't bother with dessert. Paid and left. While in Winston on business we decided to have dinner here as my husband found this place on Yelp. We were greeted by the staff who were amazing and we were quickly seated which is always good. Our server was super nice and attentive. This place to me as well as my family was just OK. My husband wasn't impressed with the chicken he had (fried) and we were talked into the cornbread by our server and it wasn't anything I'd write home about. I was told that the salad bean dish I had was highly ordered by those who don't eat meat as that's the only item on the menu that work with my eating restrictions. It was beyond BLAND and something I would NEVER suggest nor would I have it again. Grabbed a Saturday lunch here with a couple of buddies during a day trip from Charlotte. Glad we did! As expected, it was packed but we opted for immediate seating at what they refer to as the "community table", which was just a long rectangular table that sat twelve people. Very down-homey indeed. The wait staff were attentive and friendly from the start and were scurrying around like ants during our entire stay. We kicked things off with the Sweet Potato Cornbread served in a small cast iron skillet topped with honey butter. Perfectly baked, it was a great start for $4. Two of us ordered the Slap Yo Mama Half Rack Baby Back Ribs, served atop cole slaw and BBQ beans with a side of collards. At $15, it was a lot of food! The half rack of ribs were smoky, fall-off-the-bone tender and delicious. The cole slaw was the sweet and vinegarly kind and the BBQ beans appeared to be pintos and, you guessed it, were sweet and oniony. The only non-sweet item, the collards, were as good as any I've ever had, perfectly seasoned and paired nicely with the cornbread. Sorry I didn't get to try the stuffed sweet potato... next time maybe! Dessert? Yeah right! I daresay that I would ever have room for such here, but then again, considering how sweet our meal was, it almost feels like we had it. Accordingly, I responded "sold!" as soon as my dinner team mentioned Sweet Potatoes as the first entry in their list of restaurant possibilities. Five minutes later, we had piled into the car; ten minutes after that, we were seated at the long central table in the Sweet Potatoes dining room. It was Tuesday: half-price night on wines. Many restaurants have half-off nights on wine bottles, but I've seen few that extend the sale to wines by the glass. I'm delighted to report that Sweet Potatoes belongs to this minority. I began with a glass of North Carolina sauvignon blanc, which was almost as sweet as the iced tea that's poured everywhere at lunchtime. Meh! Our main wine was a bottle of the Hayes Valley Meritage (40% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc, 13% Malbec) from Crafted Brands. It was alright and definitely a solid deal with the 50% discount. Foodwise, we began with a skillet of cornbread and an order of the fried green tomatoes and okra. These were both quite good -- I liked the okra a lot more than the green tomatoes, by the way. For my main dish, it was clear that I needed to try the Southernly Fried Chicken. Taking a cue from one of the other diners, I asked for a half-order of the chicken with a side of sautéed spinach. This was a good move that left me with a totally satisfying dinner. They have a variety of menu items featuring sweet potatoes (fries, buns, waffles, sauces, cornbread, desserts). I got their Ragin' Cajun Turkey burger with sweet potato fries, and it was delicious! The burger had a nice kick to it with the spicy collard greens. The collard greens were a nice touch to the usual lettuce that comes with burgers. I thought the sweet potato bun was aight, and the fries were nice and crispy, although they did seem like they were frozen and not house-made fries. Living near Charlotte, I often work in the Winston-Salem area, but rarely eat there. A special project caused me to spend the night, so I looked for a good place to eat near the downtown area. Chicken? Check. Country ham? Check. Cheese? Check. Served over rice and smothered with gravy? Check and check. The only thing that could have made it more Southern would have been if the chicken were fried, and the rice was dirty. It was delicious! For dessert, I of course had to get the sweet potato pie.
