I have been converted!! Ive never been very interested in salad. I just always thought of it as a side, not a meal. I was even forced to try a similar salad place during a work meeting and I was completely unimpressed. Fast forward to a couple days ago when I attended a Yelp event, Oktogafest, in DC and Sweetgreen gave out small salads. I picked the Summer BBQ salad to take home and ate it for lunch the next day. I had no real expectations but I cant tell you how surprised I was. The salad was so good, I wanted more! It had 2 things on it that I dont typically even like, chicken thighs and watermelon, but I crushed it like it was my last meal. The "goddess" dressing is amazing and the bowl was also full of my favorite herb fresh cilantro. I fell completely in love and now here I am at the old town location for another Summer BBQ. I wish I could give less than one star. First time ever ordering from sweetgreen so I ordered something from the menu and made a small modification of adding onions and changing the type of lettuce. Well it was suppose to be a hot bowl with rice and chicken. I got home and then noticed there was not only no rice but not chicken. How do you leave the main ingredients out of the bowl? Contacted them immediately which only gets you to a text exchange with robot answers. First they offered a credit to use through the app. Fantastic it doesn't help me now but ok if I could log into the app. I reset the password 2 times with still no luck. I usually get takeout from here but today decided to stand in line and order. It's an 80 degree day and the air conditioning is not working so it's actually cooler outside than inside. There are a few flies all over the place and the staff doesn't seem to care that it's hovering and settling over the food. The staff prepping the food keep touching and adjusting their clothes and hair with the gloves on. Same for the staff who make the bowls. I don't want them adjusting their apron or hair net and then touching the food I'm about to eat with the same gloved hand. I left the line and walked out. This particular sweetgreen isn't up to par with some of the others. I've been to the sweetgreens in Pentagon City, Crystal City, and Ballston, and they are all better. I went to the King Street Sweetgreen at about 1:00 PM on a Saturday, so I understand there is going to be a line since it is lunch time. However, the line moved incredibly slow and employees seemed to be inefficient. Maybe they should move 1 or 2 resources from the kitchen area to customer facing positions, or hire another person if funds permit. There seemed to be a lot of space from where the counter/food station is to the back of the restaurant. I didn't quite understand that design because it seems like you could probably fit a few more tables in the place if the counter was moved back a few feet. There were hardly any tables available during lunchtime. I understand its more of a takeout place, but still. I ordered the spicy sabzi salad which has spicy broccoli, raw beets, organic carrots, bean sprouts, spicy quinoa, basil, roasted sesame tofu, sweetgreen hot sauce, and carrot chili vinaigrette. After I was eating it, I realized they left out the bean sprouts. Nevertheless, the salad was very good as usual. The cashier didn't even ask me if I wanted anything to drink. After I sat down, I went back to the register to get a cup for water, but the cashier disappeared. Had to wait another 5 minutes to get someones attention to receive a cup. A new Sweet Green in town. Simple and classic insides with modern seating gives this place a almost hospital feeling. SG is a model just like Chipotle or Cava, walk down the line, tell them what you want to "make your own" or choose from a few selections that they seasonally have. I was really less than impressed with the final product. Over $12 for a salad alone I could have bought at fricken Whole Foods for less! My only qualm: Sweetgreen, being the impressively progressive company they are (e.g. they only use renewable materials in every square foot of the store), is experimenting with cashless registers. While I am personally okay with this, I thought it was odd for such a brand new store to advertise that on their front door, but *not* have the equipment to accept Apple Pay, IMO the most superior cashless option (most secure and quickest). read more

Granted, I was the first customer at the day at like 10:30 AM, but still, it was quick service. The salad was delicious, but it irked me a bit that the total cost of my salad was 14 dollars for a small - medium sized salad. The quality was top notch and I would love to come back. Was it worth the Uber right to get there? Sure. Was I crazy to do it? I think I can justify the cost this one time. I do know that this is a chain and that there are a lot more locations out there, but for this particular one, it was more spacious than the one say.... in Farragut North, where it was hard to find seating. read more

I ordered from them in May on Grubhub. They are on the east end of King Street. I did not used to see restaurants from that block on Grubhub, but many restaurants have expanded their delivery radii lately to get more business with the coronavirus situation. I am on Franconia about a mile west of Telegraph and I had the meal in maybe about 45 minutes. I got the herby fish and rice plate ($12.75), a side dish of cauliflower, beans, and rice ($3.95), and a Spindrift raspberry lime drink ($3.00). The main dish had wild rice, cauliflower rice, basil, cilantro, almonds, tomato, steelhead, carrots, celery, and ranch dressing. The steelhead is a type of trout I had not tried before. It went especially well with the cilantro and ranch dressing. The combination of rices rounded out the meal. The drink was an interesting combination of raspberry and lime which you don't see very often. The servings were moderate and the ingredients were fresh and tasty. This was definitely a healthy meal. They have one of the more original menus in Alexandria. The delivery fee was $3.99, the sales tax was $2.17, the service fee was $1.97, and the tip for the driver was $5.57. I do not mind paying a tip to the driver, but I should not have to pay delivery and service fees to Grubhub. The expense of delivery is borne by the driver and not by Grubhub. This is on top of the 30% fee Grubhub charges to the restaurant. I also object to the 11% Alexandria sales tax on restaurant meals. This was extremely controversial when Alexandria enacted it a few years ago. There is no way this tax is not causing Alexandria restaurants to lose business. The sales tax in Fairfax County is only 5%. This is on top of Grubhub fees and driver tips. The problem with Grubhub orders in Alexandria is that four parties are trying to make money from the transaction: the restaurant, Grubhub via fees to the diner and the restaurant, Alexandria via the sales tax, and the driver via the tip. What happens with so many parties trying to make money from the same transaction is that the price to the consumer is very expensive, and yet none of the parties is making very much money--except for Grubhub. I have always said the more parties you add to a transaction, the more problems you are going to have. Many times all of the fees can add 50% to 100% to the cost of the meal. I only order from Grubhub half as often as I would like to because of all the fees. I cannot be the only one who is deterred from ordering. My issues are with Grubhub and not the restaurant. This is a good place for an inexpensive, healthy meal. Keep up the excellent work. read more

Had been a twice-a-week regular customer (spending approx. $25/week since August) at this location. Attempted to purchase my go-to bowl selection this afternoon -- waited more than 5 minutes before anyone came to take my order (or until I was even acknowledged), as they had one (1) person handling all walk-in orders. (The line got to 6 customers deep at one point.) The employee who finally came over to assist me did not wash his hands before putting on gloves. He then gave me a 3/4 full scoop of chicken; when I asked him to augment that and make it a full scoop, he said I would be charged extra (i.e., for "double" chicken). I made a second attempt -- unsuccessfully -- to explain what the problem was, but he wouldn't budge. I won't be returning to this location, and urge others to avoid it as well. Hope saving the $0.05 in food cost for an additional 4-5 small pieces of chicken was worth it for you guys! read more

First, the food was good, but I was surprised at their peculiar "no cash" policy. This has the presumed effect of keeping people considered "undesirable" out and specifically excludes a significant number of people from particular ethnic groups because payment is almost exclusively by credit card. From what I could find, White users of credit cards is 83%, whereas African-American users are at 50%. It is difficult to believe that the business "accidentally" overlooked these demographics when they developed their policy. Discrimination in 2018 is just wrong. Presumably anyone who wants to eat there can obtain a debit card, but realistically, that's not how people plan on meals -- the best they can expect is that the person without a card will be with someone else who has a card. Sweetgreen should, at the very least, post a notice that people without credit cards are still permitted to purchase food there and pay cash (or use a cash payment machine). Or just give it up and serve all patrons equally. read more

"You'll be Healthy But Destitute" Three stars, but only because the food is excellent, nutritious, healthy, yadda, yadda, yadda. Everything else is pretty so so. The tables weren't clean, and the staff isn't especially personable or charming. Most of all....wait for it.....the prices are Exorbitant. With an upper case "E." These are salads; there aren't gold nuggets nestling in the lettuce. Why would lunch there -- two unremarkable salads -- cost $45? I'll tell ya: The one Green Goddess Salad was a bunch of greens in a bowl, with some beets, sweet potatoes, and shredded carrots. The greens are the kind that children will eat, if you direct an Uzzi with a red laser light at them. But these magical greens are healthy, so you choke them down. That was about ten bucks. The second salad was the same "basic" kind of salad, with additions: some avocado, some sour cream, etc. Each add-on was $1.50 or $2.50 (Ca-ching, ca-ching), all still culminating in a bowl of mostly green stuff that wasn't incredibly spectacular. One drink (not two), and the cost to park the car (the meter wouldn't take less than the $5 maximum fee, for some reason), and there you have it -- $45. Blown. Out the window. Gone forever from your retirement account. No cottage on the French Riviera now, Doris. And you shuffle back outside, thinking, "If I lived near this place, and could walk to it, it might conceivably be worth it, in the Holy Name of the god Nutrition." But you don't live within walking distance, there is no convenient parking, and hence you won't darken the door of this place again, except by accident. Where's the nearest Burger King? read more

Sweetgreen is a restaurant chain that has several locations in the DC metro area. We visited the one in Old Town Alexandria. This is one of those "green" "save the environment" restaurants, where their marketing niche is serving farm to table salads. They don't accept credit cards, so you will need to bring cash. The restaurant has a pretty good sized menu of salads and warm bowls. We had the Spicy Thai Salad and the Nancy's Chopped Salad. The salad prep area is basically an attractive, assembly line arrangement (think Subway), although you are not really giving input along the way, as once you order, the person making your salad busily begins assembling your salad from the ingredients on the line, according to the recipe for whatever you ordered. The good thing is because this is happening right in front of you, you can certainly chime in ("can you add some beets to that, please?") and our experience was that our server was happy to oblige our requests, with no extra charge. Two observations about the salads. They are reasonably large, so definitely an entree sized salad, and they were quite delicious. Both the Nancy's Chopped Salad and the Spicy Thai Salad were excellent, and both were large enough to constitute satisfied mid-afternoon lunch meals. Because we were visiting from out of town, we relaxed a bit before and after our meal to watch the restaurant operate. The staff seemed happy and helpful, even as the crowds spiked from time to time (i.e., lines formed and then waned).
