The Truffle Chicken is another fantastic choice. The truffle aioli adds a lot of something to a very tender chicken. I also had a side of Butternut Squash Soup, and it was the perfect balance between tasting like fresh veggies and being a creamy bowl of comfort. The desserts are divine! Top chef sent Chef Alex packing because they had no idea what he can do. The Honey Crisp Apple Galette and Hibiscus Poached Pear and Almond Tart are such perfect desserts - if he had made one of those, he would have finished top 3 at least! Sweetsalt is a cute cafe tucked away in Toluca Lake. I'm always on the hunt to find a great cafe, and I'm a fan of Sweetsalt. The restaurant is cozy with brown hardwood flowers, fresh white tables, and cute little plants. When I visited, they said they serving breakfast all day (even though online it says they stop serving at 11am)? I wish this information was online because I love cafes that serve breakfast all day and like to dine at those more often. Sweetsalt has a great rustic feel, but seating is first come first served, which during lunch hours can be hard to get a spot. I suggest getting here early to find a seat before you order your food, otherwise you might be sitting on the sidewalk with your sandwich. This place is great for what it is a: a cafe in the valley, but the food is not amazing and thus I did not give it 5 stars. Their portions are a hearty size, but apart from that I could eat a better meal at home for much cheaper. Most of the sandwiches are served on ciabatta bread that's tough and chewy. The salads are full of flavor but when I'm at a cafe dreaming of Le Pain Quotidien's food instead, a chain I might add, that is a problem. FOOD: I ordered the Brussels Sprouts & Kale Tacos. They were tasty, but not filling. The inside of the tacos had way too many greens and almost no protein. There were like 7 beans in each taco. My friend ordered the Truffle Chicken, which came with tons of bread but very little chicken filling on the inside. Our food came out in a timely manor, but was it amazing? I come here for the lavender duck confit sandwich and it is as amazing as it sounds! It's got savory braised onions, lavender oil, honey, alfalfa sprouts, goat cheese all on ciabatta bread for $13. I have made duck confit myself and believe you me, it's easier to pay someone else to make it! They serve breakfast until 11 am on weekdays and I'll have to get up early someday for that. I want to try their breakfast burrito and assorted baked goods. Since this is a place that caters to ladies, they have a lot of interesting salads: kale & wild rice, spicy quinoa, fig & blue cheese, burrata & tomato, curry cauliflower, salmon & haricot vert, champagne chicken, strawberry bacon, pesto pasta and watermelon mint. Went here with a colleague and was very, very pleased. I had the brussel kale taco with added chicken... honestly I could have even left off the chicken and been just as satisfied. The veggie tacos were toothsome and satisfying thanks to the artichoke hearts and chipotle lime white beans. Just enough salt and acid to keep the greens bright. I just visited SweetSalt for the first time since they reopened today. I really wanted to love this place, however every single item I would have ordered had/has goat cheese on it. I honestly cannot stand goat cheese. I have never seen a menu before with so many things with goat cheese. Please, please EOL all the goat cheese! On the whole, I try to be polite (except when you double-cross me in any way!). So when the mother of the girl I am a nanny for insisted that she take me out for a meal for my 28th birthday; I declined citing my desire to not impose. However, I had to pick up my paycheck and she texted to meet her at Sweetsalt because she "had to eat something". I don't lack intelligence and thus instantly knew that this was her "trick" to get me to enjoy a birthday meal. I have to admit: I am VERY glad for her deceiving act. Sweetsalt is a charming cafe which can just as easily blend in to a small port town in Maine (with its Martha Stewart-esque clean lines and matte colors); as it does in trendy Toluca Lake. Although the decore is minimalist; it is welcoming, rustic, and yet fashionable at the same time. If the interior is too bland for your ambiance preferences; Sweetsalt offers a few outdoor tables, as well. My "boss" and I were instantly welcomed when we stepped foot into the establishment. The baked goods didn't fail to capture my attention even though I rarely imbibe in sweet treats and the menu made me almost jump up and down in glee. Truffles, lobsters, shrimp, quinoa, pancetta, lavender duck... Sweetsalt has it all! Imagine a Panera Bread on steroids. The unique ingredients and combinations encourage not only gluttony but multiple visits. I ordered the Truffle Chicken Sandwich (grilled chicken w/Gruyere cheese, tomato, mushrooms, herbs, and a truffle aioli -- $12) while my boss ordered the Champagne Chicken Salad (pulled chicken, grapes, celery, and cucumbers with a goat cheese and champagne dressing -- $10). The cashier (who was VERY knowledgeable) informed us that the baked goods are baked fresh daily and most of the ingredients are either local, organic, or both. Basically, a Whole-Foods nut would be quite pleased. While waiting for our orders, I got us some water from the self-serve cooler which is slightly odd (and uses small plastic cups but with no recycling bin!). I suppose that is expected however with no waiter service. How was my sandwich? Well let's just say that I heard the angel chorus! I was going to skip the devil-carb ciabatta roll but simply couldn't help myself. The sandwich was large (perfect for sharing) and did not skimp on fillings. Generous slices of fattening Gruyere, shredded chicken, and mushrooms rang supreme while the truffle aioli danced on my taste buds. My only complaint was the texture of the aioli which made the inside of the bun a bit soggy (I thought the aioli would be thicker and instead looked like melted butter). The sandwich also came with a side of greens (with an unknown dressing) which perfectly complemented the flavors. My boss's Champagne Chicken Salad was a bit of a surprise as we both expected an actual salad with toppings but received a chicken salad (like the spreadable kind) on a lettuce leaf. Despite this, the chicken was tender and flavorful, the grapes gave it a nice "pop" , and the dressing was light and yet hearty at the same time. Overall, the meal was amazing and leaves you feeling satisfied and not heavy with "bad food". As my boss purchased a Salted Caramel Brownie for her daughter at home (lies! I know she ate it!); I was enticed by the Salted Caramel Macaron (Sweetsalt is the home of Salted Caramel treats). Salted Caramel and macarons are two things that even my diet-obsessed self can't resist. Plus, it was a birthday meal so I went for it! The macaron (also fresh-baked on location) was perfect. A crisp but tender meringue with a caramel buttercream and sprinkles of sea salt. It was not puny in size and certainly not lacking any flavor. If it only had a candle to blow out, it would have been perfect! Service was excellent as our meal was prepared quickly and an associate had a box ready for my take-home portion before I even finished my request for one. Sweetsalt may be a simple sandwich/salad establishment but the creativity, passion for ingredients, and flavor complements shine through. The menu begs for multiple visits, even if on a diet. Plus, they also sell Zapp's chips which I know nothing about but my boyfriend is in love with and says they are hard-to-find. I gave this place TWO tries because EVERYONE is raving about the deliciousness of this joint. However, both times I left unhappy. First of all, for brunch this place is BS, it is alot of money to get the bare minimum: One cup of coffee and two plates with no add-ons. Short Review: Great, local spot for salads and sandwiches. Menu changes about 2-3 times per year, and soups are different each day. Food is absolutely delicious. I question how clean the establishment is based on their bathrooms. Long Review: I've been coming here for several years ever since Chef Alex Eusebio (Top Chef fame) opened it. At the time, there was literally nothing else like it around Toluca Lake, so it was and still is a smashing success. He changes the menu around every once in a while, to introduce new flavors to the pallet, but about 75% of the menu is the staple product. My favorite salad is the Champagne Chicken, but I get it with arugula instead of iceberg. My favorite sandwich is the ham and brie roll. Mmmm so good. And soups are on everyday, usually made to pair with the daily special(s). On this last trip here for lunch, I actually had the chance to use the bathroom. Something I haven't normally done. O got water on the floor after washing my hands, and when I went to wipe it up, I was actually shocked by the amount of dirt and dust on the floor. The paper towel was disgustingly black with filth. To me, this is a sign of how clean they keep the place in general. Not impressive, and I have to say - depending on my adventurous mood that day - may affect whether I come back here again. 4 stars for the amazing and varied food selection. Towards the back corner of the restaurant you can find a variety of hot sauces, free water, iced tea ($2), and two different types of coffee to refill your cup from GROUNDWORKS SO while we ordered our breakfast at the counter, we couldn't help but notice all the delicious pastries at the window. We just had to order that maple sugar pop tart! We also got the truffled egg sandwich on ciabatta with mushrooms + cheese and the bacon eggs sandwich on ciabatta with pesto + cheese. Both sandwiches were delicious!!! The better however was the truffled eggs!! The side greens that come with the dishes is so light and tasty. The meal is simply balanced. Delicious avocado toast with egg. definitely wasn't what i expected-in a good way! I was expecting a basic toast with avocado spread but i was highly impressed by the taste. Saddest latte I've had in a long time. Ordered the Mexican Mocha to go, was excited for the espresso and the Mexican chocolate. It tasted like watered down warm milk-- there was a hint of espresso flavor at the edges, but there was clearly not a shot of espresso anywhere to be found. Likewise there was a hint of chocolate in the watery foamed milk, but that was it, spiced or otherwise. I came home and made a shot of espresso and poured it in, but what a bummer. I was in the car driving away before I tasted it, otherwise I would've asked for a re-do. But while I was waiting for my faint echo of a latte, I witnessed a member of the staff kindly help a little girl who wanted banana bread but was allergic to peanuts-- the kid was a sweet little bunny rabbit and the guy helping her was so patient and thoughtful in making sure what she chose wouldn't kill her-- so three stars for that guy, but heck: Get the banana bread and skip the coffee, that's what I learned. read more

Servers and atmosphere are nice. Clean inside, but obviously still finding their way. Looks like they are installing a Pizza Oven for future use. On a cold day the Heater was obviously nonfunctioning, or the temps were set in the low 60's. Tomato bisque and Grilled Cheese were unimpressive... Soup barely warm with overabundance of Basil flavor, and the grilled cheese was actually cold, with a giant, solidified glob of cheese starting to dry out, along with overtoasted, bone dry bread (think cut the roof of your mouth while eating). Serrano Ham and Fig sandwich was OK, but unimpressive. The ham was stuck all together like it was pressed, and way too much fig dressing overwhelmed the sandwich. Bread was good. Presentation and assembly can be SO MUCH better! Overall, I think this place has potential and hope they take the feedback seriously. Willing to give it one more chance in a few months, but going to steer clear for a while until they figure it out. Best of luck to this place! read more

As long as they keep the quality and freshness of the food up its a great place. Once or twice out of ten visits it's been mediocre but mostly a fabulous place with great food and amazing service. Melissa in particular is awesome. read more

First time visiting today even though I've lived in the neighborhood for YEARS. Got the Mexican Mocha and it was DELICIOUS! My husband is a picky eater, got the steak tacos, loved them. I got the chicken lettuce cups and they were fresh and delicious. Definitely will be going back. read more

Cute place. Fast service and yummy Salmon salad. Street parking was okay for a Sunday afternoon. Had the popular salted caramel brownie. It was mediocre at best. Staff was very friendly. Came back and had the Rose Macaron. Oh my lord! I'm still dreaming about it. I need to go back ASAP for more! read more
