I did a lot of research before I picked Sylvan Veterinary. I spoke to friends, clients and looked at my search engines before finally deciding on Sylvan. I am so glad I did. My wife and I brought our little kitten, "Sassy", to Sylvan for her first appointment and discuss a few minor issues we had experienced with Sassy. We were cordially greeted and the receptionist went over my paperwork which I had filled out on line. All was in order and we sat down to await our appointment. The wait was short and we went into a clean examination room where the young attendant was happily shocked when we told her we had a "Ragamuffin" kitten. It pleased us to see someone care about this breed as much as we do. She took down a lot of info and showed great care for our kitten. After she left, Dr Roussell came in and did a fantastic job examining Sassy, displaying a lot of TLC with our kitten. She asked a lot of questions pertinent to her health and offered a lot of great advice for us to do which will promote a healthy and happy life for Sassy. After leaving, we received a phone call from Dr Roussell telling us they had found a parasite within our little kitten and informed us of precautions on treating her. We went down, picked up the medication, and have since been giving our kitten medication to take care of this condition. Thankfully the Vet Asst was very patient with me and showed me how to give the medication properly without risking a problem with our kitten. We strongly recommend this hospital, as everyone whom we have come in contact with has shown us complete professional and satisfactory results. They treat the animals as people, and display a genuine concern for the animal, as well as the owners. Hopefully we will only be going back for routine visits, but if an emergency occurs, there is no other place in Modesto which our kitten will go to but Sylvan Veterinary. read more

This was my first time coming going there. I absolutely love this place. The lobby and exam rooms are clean and smell good, no stinky pet odor. The people that work there are all very friendly and seem to love their job and you can tell they really care about the pets that come in there. My 2 little dogs were scared at first but they must have sensed the love because they stopped shaking and actually relaxed. The vet was amazing with them you would've thought they were her own pets by the way she talked to them and handled them. Really made me feel good. I have been to this vet several times in, more or less, emergency situations. The staff was extremely attentive, caring, and efficent. Everyone is very plesent to work with and knowledgeable. I've been to several other vets in the area over the last few years and no where can compare. Sure, they can be slightly more pricy then other vets, but it is absolutely worth it for the level of care and expertise your pet and family receieve. After two weeks of care, many meds, invasive procedures, four X-rays and two overnight stays, my poor fur baby still cannot hold down food. When I try to call to get an appt, I understand one doc is off, my baby's doc is in surgery & the owner is "too busy", but after spending over $2200, I would think these, so called compassionate doctors would at least be able to return my call for a little advice to tide me over til I can get in the next day when they can charge me for another full visit & probably another overnight stay & who knows what else. WARNING to those getting written quotes, take a good look at it, cuz it could possibly be your bill from the week before, THAT YOU'VE ALREADY PAID. This is the best Veterinary Hospital you can ever take your fur baby too! At the beginning of the year our beloved husky got very ill. We were at another vet, who after receiving the lab results informed to just put our baby down. That was not an option! We went to a few other Veterinary Hospitals and no one would help. We decided to try Sylvan. Dr. Cardoza was amazing! We wanted to try everything we could and after a few treatments we were referred over to specialist at UC Davis for Chemo. Sadly, the cancer was too advanced but the care we received from Sylvan was unbelievable. When no one else would help, the Sylvan vets tried their best. They have the pets interest at heart. The fact that they were willing to try and were there with us was very comforting. The staff at Sylvan are very knowledgeable and comforting. They loved our baby and were sad at our loss. Our baby is gone now because we were not informed from our previous Vet to get yearly blood screenings. read more

the staff is always nice a bit busy at times on the reception but good. my 14yr old mixed lab/pit has been seen here since they opened pretty much as well as my feisty terrier who is 6yrs old. my luka was the latest addition as we decided to eventually keep him after finding him stranded in the street, sylvan vet checked for a chip and helped w a discount for new dog shots that were needed in order to get him to the groomers, they never pushed me to signing anything or trying to take the dog from our hands then again we never suggested we needed help. read more

We have been going to Sylvan Vet for many years, Dr Kip is great, a excellent diagnostician! At first we would only see him for our dogs, but he encouraged us to meet with his other Vets, It has been a joy to join in the care of our dogs with Dr Tiffany!! I had to euthanize my pet rat and as with some pet deaths go, it was very sudden and I couldn't stand watching him suffer as he passed. I called this hospital and without hesitation they said they could take care of helping him pass whenever I could get there. I arrived immediately and when I arrived the staff was attentive, compassionate and explained the procedure being done to him and it made me feel better he would pass as peaceful as possible. They treated his body with dignity and I couldn't thank them enough. This review is specifically for Dr. Rojas - Let me start off by saying there are some great vets here and we have been taking our dogs here for years, but I have to give them a One Star because they are supporting an awful vet who works here! The gist of this story is, do not go to Dr. Rojas! We had an emergency situation with our Saint Bernard, Wrigley. I woke up to find him having a seizure and unable to walk! When we got to our vet, they sent out 2 tiny vet tech girls with a rolling table made for a 50lb dog - mind you Wrigley is 180lbs and we are unsure if it is his spine, the girls (with our help) were barely able to flop him on the table with our help! Dr. Rojas was our "emergency appointment dr" and we gave him the following information; "yesterday it seemed as if he was hallucinating, he was dodging things that weren't there and acting very strange! This morning I found him having a seizure and unable to walk, his eyes are bouncing all over the place, he is extremely anxious, his legs are all moving when I touch them, but he's just unable to get up off the floor" I then asked, could this have anything to do with the medication he is on? Dr. Rojas said, "no, there is no way his current medication could have caused this. I need to do xrays of his spine" now looking at the xrays he said, "well I am not really sure if it is a pinched nerve, I can't really tell...but in this area there is a slight possibility so we will give him a steroid shot and send you home with steroids" I then questioned him one more time if it might be his medication or anything else because he was hallucinating the day before and again he said no and to watch out if he shows any other odd signs he may need an MRI/further testing. We asked if we could keep him there and Dr. Rojas said he would be better off at home with us and then did not help us get our dog back in the car, he sent the vet techs to do it themselves again - even after he is now being treated for a spinal injury! After a couple hours of being home and watching his anxiety increase I called and asked if they could give him a sedative to help him calm down and the vet techs told me he said "no, he can give me some pain killers." I told them that I did not think he was in pain and is panicking from not being able to get up and he still said no. We decided to bring him back to the vet, because he was unable to drink water and he obviously could not use the bathroom outside. Dr. Rojas finally looked in his eyes and said, "this does not look good, there's something going on in his brain, not his spine" ran some more tests then told us we need to take him to a neurologist for more testing which would be roughly 4-5 thousand dollars and if they can figure it out, it will be at least 5 thousand more for surgery and our only other option was to try and antibiotic which he did not recommend. We asked if we should take him to the emergency vet for the night to get fluids, catheter and start antibiotics and he told us Wrigley will be better off at home once again and if we decide to do antibiotics then it will be at least a week before we notice anything and if it doesn't work, after a week his brain will be completely fried! Because of everything he told us, we had to make a big decision, between humanly putting him down to not suffer anymore, take him for testing and spending at least 5k or taking him for antibiotics and hoping for the best! We decided to take him for a second opinion at the emergency vet, where we got Dr. Holmes who was absolutely amazing! She listened to his background information and diagnosed him within minutes - he was diagnosed with Metronidazole Toxicity, caused from his medication to treat Giardia (the vet originally mis-dosed him twice in a row and his 3rd and final dosage was increased-which he was currently taking, which is why I asked if there was anyway it could have been his medicine messing him up because h had been on it so long and because his dosage had increased) the symptoms include; staggering, head tilt to one side, dilated pupils, bizarre back and forth eye movements called nystagmus, and even seizures. Dr. Holmes informed us that giving Diazepam (a sedative) would shorten his recovery time from 2 weeks to as low as 48 hours! If Dr. Rojas would have looked into side effects on his current medication just to be sure to rule that out, he might have discovered that the medication could actually be the cause! And if he would have prescribed the sedative when we asked for it, then he would have started treatment right away and shortened his recovery right away. But instead jumped to conclusions time and time again! We will never ever ever take any of our animals to see Dr. Rojas and strongly recommend others to avoid him. read more

I am a first time dog owner. I have been to the vet before with cats and this is the absolute first time I have ever entered one with NO SMELL!!! Usually the smell of bleach or cleaners. This was like entering someone's home. The staff is wonderful!! I think I called 3 times in one day with questions and apologized for bugging them, but they said no problem, I wasn't bugging, they were happy to help. They are very loving, prompt with appts. and also very informative on the breed you own. I would recommend them 100%!! read more

I took my dog in two days ago because she was having a hard time breathing. My dog had congestive heart failure. I asked the doctor how long she had and I told him I didn't want her to suffer. The doctor told me some dogs live many years like this but it would be expensive. I paid $510 dollars for her treatment. She died the next day. I'm glad they got money out of my families misfortune. read more

We've been coming here for years, since they were in the tiny, rundown building run by Dr. Moody. They've been with us through the coming and going of multiple animals, and I've never had a problem here. I once had a puppy who had to be put down due to a genetic problem, and she died on the way to Sylvan. They took care of her when we got there anyways, and had been very invested in her health. Shortly after that, they sent such a sweet condolence card and a card with her paw print on it that brings me to tears even years later. They're such wonderful people, especially Dr. Cardoza and Dr. Roussell. The assistants are great too, especially Jen (not sure if she works there still). I've recently been to another vet in the Bay Area, and it's no comparison. You can tell everyone at Sylvan is a real animal lover, and that makes all the difference. read more

Sylvan Vet is very clean, nice, and well kept. That being said, don't take your pet there unless you want to be price gouged. They are not upfront and do not ask permission or consent before doing things to your pet that cost extra money. A few visits ago I asked that they place a note in my dogs chart saying to consult me before doing anything to my dog. Apparently this last visit they have once again ignored that request. First of all my dog was just having a yearly visit to receive a vaccine. The vet felt like there may be an ear infection in my dog because a dirty substance came back on the q-tip. He said he would like to take a look at my dogs ear with an otoscope outside the room (why can't he do that in the room?) He took my dog and neither of them returned for over 20 minutes. Finally the vet came back in without my dog and said it looks like he has an early ear infection. Instead of asking me, he was already having the vet tech doing bilateral ear rinses on my dog ($40) and he had looked at the substance in a microscope (another $40). Both of which were unnecessary and my dog could have just been treated presumptively with the antibiotics. Don't get me wrong, my dog is my baby and I would do whatever he needs done, but that stuff was unnecessary when he could have just been treated with antibiotics. Or at least just ask me prior to doing all that stuff to my dog. Needless to say this happens every time my dog goes in for a routine visit. This time my dog went in for a vaccine and I walked out with a $200 bill. read more

I have been to this place with more than one of my cats they refuse to treat your pet without giving every single shot first. My cat has been sick for 2 weeks, the hospitalized her for 3 days and sent her home without telling us how much we had to "syringe feed her". She is now sicker than before, I took her in Friday to have labs done and was told they'd call me the next day to give me the results. Now it is officially Monday, my cat is losing weight has no appetite what so ever, needs a feeding tube and they keep jerking the price around. The first estimate I was given with the lab would be $591-600, and now they are saying the lab was $425, with the feeding tube $600!!! If I would've went to Mono Way Vet in Sonora I would've spent less than the $2000+ I have spent here with my cat being healthier. We have tried calling them many times and they keep saying the vet is in surgery and can't talk to us. About 3 hours ago Dr. Rojas said we would be better off putting our cat to sleep when her condition is treatable!!!!!! All i have to say is most of their staff are lacking people skills and are incompetent!!!! I have been to many vets and this has to be the worst place I have been to. Not only is the wait ridiculous, but they only want to make that quick buck. There is only one vet there that I like and he is gone all week, looks like my cat will be dead thanks to them and their lack of communication with each other. read more

After calling twice today, and being told we'd be called before the day was over, we decided to to take my dog elsewhere, and it turns out that "eye infection" was bronchitis. The staff were all so warm and welcoming and Dr. Kipp Magnussen was so gentle with my dog and made me feel at ease that he didn't need to do a surgery on my dog. From the vet who responded to my sweet 9 yr old boston's affection by asking if he bites prior to interacting with him, to my other boston being put on a food elimination diet only to have her symptoms worsen because she was allergic to the chicken and rice. The 3 vets my boys have seen are also great with them, are intelligent and seem to earnestly want to keep my boys healthy not just make a buck. My experience was anything but good. I went here because I needed specialized x-rays and they were on the web site as certified with experience and people I knew had gone and said I would be pleased. I arrived on Friday shortly after 8am, the front office was nice, thus the start, I left about 845. The Vet called me about 1015 confirming the x-rays I needed and to talk me into do the more extensive one for the youngest, 6mo, I agreed and said I would return in a couple hours. On arrival I was told the dogs were not done. I waited, after a couple more hours I ask if something was wrong, seems the machine was malfunctioning but in the process of being fixed. I was told that yes the Dr would speak to me and since he is an Ortho Vet he would be able to tell if the X-rays were good. More hours passed, I had to go and ask about the dogs they did not offer information. I left the office after 7pm still not speaking to the vet, I was told he would call. The dogs were still so sedated they required lifting into the truck. I called Sat. and spoke to the office manager telling her it felt as if they only wanted my money and did not care about the animals, the dogs were left in the crate/cage all day never taken outside. No one informed me of their condition or what was going on, she said she was sorry they were short staffed and it was a very busy day. The vet was I surgery all day, I had heard that he had gone from one to another without breaks. she said the same. Also I reminded her I had not spoke to the vet she said he would call me. Ok he did call Tues, this was after I again drove down there to get copies of the X-rays and ask to see him to be told he was not there. I spoke to him about the experience and he said oh well they were busy short staffed and he was in surgery all day. His being in surgery all day made me wonder if he did the X-rays, one of the dogs limped for a week, another would not eat for over 24hrs and the pup started sitting strangely. I contacted my normal vet and he suggested watching for at least 2 weeks. I ended up having hip and knee X-rays done and sure enough the knee joint is strained appearing to have been extended too far,. another reason to wonder if the vet really did the work or did a tech do it. The X-rays done at sylvan were not the best I have ever seen, not squared up, looked like non-equal tension, yet they did pass. I have yes spoken to the certification board for the lack of professionalism, as well as my vet (had to) and the other breeders who have gone here. No one is returning to him, and anyone else who needs these specialized X-rays will go somewhere else as well. They took my money,, lots of it, treated me and the dogs bad and did not care that the dogs did not do well read more

if i could pick no stars i would. brought 2 cats in for check up and to have their nails cut. We explained that our older female cat is terrified of her own shadow and that we had to sedate her last time we came in for her nails to be cut. Let me back up a bit...I also told the girl on the phone when I set the appointment. she told me we couldn't come in on friday evening because they can't do sedation in the evening. With that being said she gave us an appointment for Saturday. No one was aware of this or told, even though i asked them to note it and be sure the dr was aware. Once the appointment started there were 2 cats in the same room and it was a complete circus. i was told to let one cat out while the other was being examined. Even I know that is a bad idea, however, I followed was I was told to do. after that pure chaos and fear for both cats. But hey...Since she called herself the "cat lady" I guess she should have full knowledge how MY cats will act. ......(Yes that is pure sarcasm) Once the so called vet came in, there were now 5 adults in this room. Along with 2 terrified cats, My Kolby was then picked up with a towel, wrapped up with his face covered and 2 shots were slammed into his rear end In all my years I have never seen such force used to inject an animal. any pet i have ever had they did them in the neck area. it was horrible to watch. no exam was even done. the so called vet seemed very uncomfortable with the anxious cats and wasn't making any effort to really complete an exam. didn't check his weight, heart, ears or stomach which is a normal exam. and then charged me for it. i attempted to have the so called vet complete it but after thinking more i didn't want to stress my poor cat out anymore. our other cat was treated the same way. I had left the room in order to get my baby out of the circus going on in that room. My mother stayed with her cat. Complete joke of a Vet and organization. i will never ever bring my pet here again. Having one of the young girls tell us to let both cats loose in the room was the dumbest thing that could have been done. Then all they did was try to sell shots when they never even fully examined the animals. Never again will i go back here. especially that dr Rojas will never get near my pets again. I asked the front desk if I needed to watch for anything with the shots they gave,..the rude response was...have they had vaccinations before? If so, you know how they will respond. Is that what a Pediatrician would say about vaccinations to a child? RUDE, YOUNG kids working here that don't have ANY customer service skills nor do they care. read more
