One of my favorite Vietnamese food places. Sometimes I come here for the coconut snails, sometimes I come here for the soup, sometimes I come here for the beer with some shrimp, most times, I get everything all at once. Of all the Vietnamese sour soups we've had, this place was the best. It is like a savory version of a lemonade, where the sourness and sweetness is extremely intense, but perfectly balanced. I've tasted all sort items from this restaurant, from quail, to frogs, to snails, to cat fish, and everything has been executed to maximize the taste of the ingredient and sauce. Fish dishes would first be soft, flakely, moist, buttery, and then after the textures, you get hit with the intensities of the sauces. In French cuisine, sauce is king, and Vietnamese food is often times a blend of native and French techniques. This place's food quality punches well beyond it's patronage. I'm frankly surprised how empty this place is, and often times, I avoid writing reviews for my FAVORITE places, because after a review from me, the place gets crazy crowded and the prices go up. Unfortunately, this review is written post mortem. I do hope that this place can re-open someday. Until then, this place has set the bar for me, for all Vietnamese restaurants going forward. Sáu Can Tho is honestly such a gem. Truly sad to see it close its doors. I feel like Vietnamese restaurants like these are difficult to find in the SGV. We ordered the clams, baked catfish, lotus root salad and the goat tenderloin. All the food here is absolutely delicious. The baked catfish is tender, buttery and flavorful. The baked catfish came with rice paper and veggies to wrap the fish in. The clams and lotus root salad were well seasoned and tasted fresh. The goat tenderloin was super tender and flavorful. Not too gamey either. Service was excellent. Our servers were extremely attentive and always made sure we had everything we needed. There is plenty of seating in the restaurant but we made a reservation for the catfish to make sure that we had the chance to try it before they sold out. Going to miss this place! read more

Our family had dinner to celebrate my SIL's birthday. For a weekend evening, the restaurant was awfully empty which I thought was odd. Notes: ~ Formerly known as Phong Dinh in San Gabriel before closure ~ This Rosemead restaurant faces Earle Ave even though the address is Garvey Ave ~ Large parking lot shared with the building's other businesses with street parking also available ~ Gendered restrooms ~ Staff was nice but lingered around our table often even after we informed them we were waiting for the rest of our party to arrive ~ Restaurant known for their baked catfish and was out of the small size, so we only had medium and large options to choose from ~ Groups of 6 or more will automatically have 20% gratuity included Food/Drinks: * Cá Đút Lơ Hậu Giang ($80) - their claim to fame is this baked whole catfish. Pretty pricy for a medium baked catfish but I was keen on trying their signature dish. The fish took 20 - 25 minutes to make which was faster than what was quoted on the menu. Catfish arrived with crispy skin and tender meat that was marinated with caramelized onions, garlic, turmeric, honey, peanuts, herbs, and oranges. Best way to eat this dish is to make your own spring roll with all the accoutrements provided (herbs, veggies (raw/pickled), rice paper, and tamarind dipping sauce. * Gỏi xoài mực nướng ($18.95) - julienned mango salad tossed with grilled squid. This dish came with a lot more squid than expected! * Ốc Len Xào Dừa ($14.95) - spiral snail sauteed in a sweet coconut sauce. Haven't had this dish before and I thought they would give toothpicks to pick out the snail, but nope. One has to suck to extract the flesh. One part of the shell is cut so that you can slurp on either open ends. Tasty, but the coconut milk makes it heavy. The fragrant coconut sauce can be drizzled over hot white rice though. * Ốc Nướng Mỡ Chài ($15.95) - grilled ground sea snail sausages wrapped in pork casings over a bed of vermicelli. Came with a plate of fresh greens and a special dipping sauce. Oh, this mini sausage was good and the special dipping sauce was pungent, but tasty! * Rau Muống Xào Chao ($15.95) - stir-fried water spinach with fermented bean curd. I usually like this dish, but the flavor was not as satisfying. * Tôm Rang Me ($13.95) - Shell-on prawns sauteed with sweet and sour tamarind sauce. Good stuff. My brother and SIL always orders this if they see it on the menu. Prawn shell can be eaten too as it's soft enough. * Chè Sâm Bổ Lượng ($5.50) - this is a Chinese/Vietnamese herbal dessert drink consisting of dates, lotus seeds, gingko nuts, dried logans, pearl barley and sliced seaweed. Can be enjoyed hot or cold - this restaurant serves it with shaved ice. * Rau Má Đậu Xanh ($4.95) - Pennyworth juice with pureed mung beans. I like to enjoy a cup of this green juice on a hot day and never had it with pureed mung beans before so it was nice to try. Refreshing, but wish there was more mung bean flavor. * Thạch Rau Câu Cà Phê Sữa (complimentary) - our meal ended with a plate of Vietnamese coffee gelatin, which are vegan desserts made of agar agar and special flavors like Vietnamese coffee, pandan or coconut milk swirled in. Some of my family members were not feeling adventurous, so we skipped the exotic meats. Regardless, I still got to try a few new things. Casual Vietnamese restaurant with interesting exotic meats like ostrich, alligator, frog, venison, and goat on the menu. But we opted to try their more traditional dishes instead to see if we liked their cuisine before deciding to come back and try the other meats, and unfortunately the ostrich was sold out on Sunday night. Overall the server was very nice, and checked up on how we ere doing while we were eating. The only thing is we requested either no cilantro or just put on the side, and every dish had cilantro still garnished on top. Presentation of food was great. The famous baked catfish was underwhelming, it tasted fishy to me and I had to drench it in their sauce for it to taste better. It did come with a lot of rice paper, veggies, and noodles to make spring rolls, but I would probably pass next time. Medium size baked catfish (the only size they had) was about $85-90. Spot on restaurant if you want some solid Vietnamese style family meal. I came here for an early Fathers day and my dad being Vietnamese wanted to come to a Vietnamese Restaurant. We ended up getting the family style dinner for 6 ($130) which had the perfect amount of food with just a small amount leftover. Everything was delicious and these are my thoughts. Seafood Meat and Vegetable Hotpot - Think of it like a hearty chicken soup with a bunch of random meats and veggies. It's delicious and oh so comforting. (4/5) Catfish in Caramelized Sauce - This is a must. Hands down the best Ca Kho To I've had. Catfish was so tender and the sauce was flavorful. No issues with the bones. (5/5) Shrimp with Caramelized Tamarind Sauce - Another absolute banger of a dish. Shrimp was a tad crunchy but the sauce was out of this world. Delicious. (5/5) Sauteed Cubed Beef over a Bed of Greens - This was good. Meat wasn't super tender but it wasn't super chewy either. Flavors were good and overall I liked it. (4/5) Clams with Basil Sauce - Another winner. Clams were pretty large and the sauce was so flavorful. I made sure to take home all the extra sauce because it was too good to waste. (5/5) Water Spinach Sauteed with Garlic - It ain't a Vietnamese Cuisine if you don't get some veggies and this hit. It's flavorful and its pretty tasty. (4.5/5) It's not super cheap but it wasn't too bad either for tasty food. We also got some pandan/coconut jello at the end which was also delicious. I can see why my parents selected this spot, it's tasty and perfect for a family outing. Honestly, this was one of the worst Vietnamese restaurant I have been to. I guess among SGV, your chances of good viet food is pretty high, but unfortunately we stumbled upon this. Their house special grill cat fish was dry. like just dry, and very underwhelming in terms of seasoning. One can argue that this is ok because you'll wrap it up like a spring roll and dunk it in sauce.. but the fish was $85 and the spring roll would've tasted better with almost anything else. Pork belly, nem, shrimp etc etc. Also their catfish hotpot was soo sweet it was basically a dessert. Soup is not drinkable. Avoid all the deep fried things if you do come here. When we came, the oil they used for deep frying was definitely very old. Very unpleasant taste/smell. Was probably suppose to change it out couple days ago. The bathroom is inside the restaurant and is very clean. Servers are attentive, but sometimes it takes a bit of time to come back to the table because they're running around to all the tables and it's so busy. Here for dinner on a Saturday night but there was no wait. We got seated right away tucked in back of the restaurant. This is a family style restaurant but also has other single plate options. We ordered braised catfish in claypot, sweet and sour catfish soup, stir fried veggies, and shaking beef to share. Braised catfish was our favorite dish. The fish was braised to perfection. Drizzle some caramelized sauce over rice. It was so good. Catfish sweet and sour soup was good but it is on the sweet side which I am not a fan of. I wished it is a bit more sour. Shaking beef was not as good as I expect. It was not the tender beef cubes. It was over cooked with a chew but it has flavors. When my family ordered a medium in OC, it fed 3-4 people. We even had leftovers. I was amazed that the medium here had so less meat. I pretty much was able to finish one whole side of the catfish by myself lol I was hungry, but not really...I was in that kind of situation. For this reason, I was a bit surprised lol Pricey was not the biggest problem. I was disappointed because the catfish lacked flavor. OMg! When you eat the ones in OC, you can smell and taste the garlic, lemongrass, green onions, and etc..This one looked nice, but it was pretty bland. The skin wasn't even that crispy. The fish was not super fresh. Most likely dead fish, but a good one. It wasn't mushy. There was only one dipping sauce instead of 2. The anchovy sauce (mam nem) was not that great. We all know that a good sauce makes everything taste better. I couldn't even use the sauce to make the fish better. I do have to say, the service here was great. The guy was attentive. He refilled our vermicelli rice noodle and changed our plate without us asking. We got free jello for dessert. It was good. They did offer a discount for the baked fish. Mid to small restaurant/ cafe that specializes in Southern Vietnamese dishes. The place feels family owned and the folks here are super nice and helpful. I had this place on one of my list, but decided to come here because I was craving Viet food and it was cold and rainy and wanted something warm and comforting. This place has been on one of my lists and actually visited twice in a few days. Was craving pho, but saw some bo luc lac (shaking beef) on the menu and ordered that. Came back for the warm, comforting pho a couple of days later. I was dining solo after work, so their lunch/ cafe menu was perfect for me. They have a more extensive, banquet/ family meal style menu that I didn't even look at because there's no way I could have ordered a lot. I think the food here is great and it hit the spot for sure. The shaking beef was very well cooked and the rice was great. The pho broth was clean and tasty and was exactly what I needed in that moment. I think this restaurant is great and I didn't even get to try what they really specialize in and that's the baked fish. Maybe someday...when I come back with family and/or friends. Looking back on my Yelp journey, Sáu Can Tho was the second place I ever reviewed back in 2018. After all this time, moving across the country and around California, traveling and dining with foods from all over the world, this place remains a 5-Star experience! I try to stay out of LA as much as I can because I hate the damn traffic, but Sáu Can Tho is worth the trek! I've definitely gone out of my way to treat my taste buds and belly, as well as introduce friends and family to delicious food! I'm salivating now just thinking about it! I have never had a bad experience here, and I've eaten plenty. As mentioned in my previous review, my dad was a professional chef, and the food here tastes both gourmet and like home cooking. This placed originated the baked catfish, and it is so juicy, tender, and flavourful! You can't really go wrong here with any of the food! Oh, and if you like Vietnamese coffee, then get ready to say, "Ooh!" and "Mmh!" I'm not even a coffee drinker, but I had two glasses of this stuff with my dinner yesterday. There is both street parking and a parking lot in the back. The service here is excellent! All the staff members are very attentive and friendly, even offering some history on the dishes when they are not slammed. I came with a few friends on a Sunday at lunch around 11:30 and it was pretty empty. It quickly filled up by the time we finished our meal. It's more of a casual mom and pop vibe. We tried this spot for the sweet and sour fish soup hot pot. The flavor of the soup was good. And the hot pot feature kept the soup hot, which really brought it to the next level. I personally was not a fan of some of the assortment of vegetables in the soup. But still really enjoyed it. We also tried this fried noodle dish with gravy. I wasn't a fan of some of the toppings but the gravy was very flavorful. We also ordered a basic rice dish with the egg meatloaf, pork skin, and pork. It was ok but I wouldn't come here for the rice dish. The service was great and the server was very tentative when we asked for extra sauce plates and came by for water refills. My family and I love coming here for their baked catfish combos as well as their Canh Chua combos. Their tamarind shrimp is also very flavorful and delicious. Without further ado, here's what we tried: - GOI GA DI BO (CHICKEN SALAD): I've never had a Viet-style salad before so it was a delight for me. Served with fish sauce on the side, I loved the banana blossom, hints of shredded pork skin, and generous portion of chicken. - CA KHO TO (BRAISED CATFISH IN CARAMELIZED SAUCE): Firm meat with soft fatty belly parts covered in a sweet, savory and sticky sauce make for a flavor bomb in your mouth. This comes with a healthy dose of black pepper and smells of fragrant fish sauce when it arrives to your table. Watch out for bones and pair this with rice. - BANH XEO (VIETNAMESE CREPE): The crepe was crispy and smelled and tasted lightly of coconut. I loved the pairing with fresh herbs and generous pork, shrimp and bean sprout filling. Best part is you get to dip this in more fish sauce. I also tried pennywort juice for the first time, which was herbal and fresh. I can't quite say whether I truly enjoy it or not, but it may grow on me. We came in during lunch weekend and were able to be seated right away. This women-owned business is known for their Vietnamese seafood dishes. Staff was incredibly friendly, there are photos on the menu for easier ordering and there are chalk signs around the restaurant outlining special dishes and drinks. We ordered the Cahn Cua Small hotpot for 2 - it was a good size, filling us both up and a decent amount of toppings. The broth was tangy and had all the toppings, similar to how my mom makes at home too. Was definitely a great comfort as I live far away from my family now. Blood clams with fried onions - our surprise favorite dish! The onions gave a crisp and the blood clams had good meat on them. Snails in coconut sauce - also very solid, I loved the coconut sauce. *Protip - order a side of rice so you can eat the sauce with this Shaking beef - there was a miscommunication with this order but we still accepted the dish to not give too much trouble to the kitchen. Go for the family-style meals... $105.95 for 7 dishes... good for 6 people... averages out to be $15+ per dish... they were all scrumptious and the portions were of good size... just a steal! Of course, we had to add on some chicken wings and another ca kho (caramelized fish)... so yummy! Yes, we had a lot of foods and some leftovers to take home... that's how we roll! This place is good but so pricey... it's worth trying once/one and done type of thing. We came here on a random night either a group of 7 friends and ordered the biggest catfish ($120). It was definitely an okay amount of food but not enough to feed everyone so we ordered the chicken salad, chicken wings, shaken beef and some veggies. This Vietnamese restaurant have the most delicious and authentic family style meal. Reminds me so much of my mom's and aunt's home cooking which is truly remarkable. We ordered the set meal for 2 which include caramelized catfish, tamarind shrimp, lemongrass chili chicken, and catfish sweet and sour soup. All were very flavorful and satisfying. At the end of the meal, they offer complimentary jello desserts (pandan coconut flavor). Service was great, they were extremely attentive and quick to bring out our food. The only negative side is that only the owners speak fluent English, it was kinda difficult to communicate with the staff. But overall, we would still come back here to try their other menu items. Stopped by one evening and ordered a family style meal. First I had the seafood, meat and vegetable hot pot. I was surprised at that generous amount of seafood in it. There was a lot of vegetables as well. It tasted pretty good. My favorite dish though was the pork in caramelized sauce. This was super flavorful and great to eat with rice. The lemongrass and chili chicken was ok. It did not have a lot of spice. The one dish I did not like was the shrimp with caramelized tamarind sauce. This was difficult to eat because of the shells and the flavor seemed lacking. Service here was not the best. They were not very attentive. Unfortunately I have not tried their famous baked catfish. Since this restaurant is really convenient for me to go to, I would come back for that next time. read more

Order the baked catfish! That's all I have to say! I stumbled across this place on Yelp and got a seat right away! I ordered the catfish (which they're known for) and ong choy because I thought it was a great idea to incorporate veggies while I'm on vacation.. Staff was friendly and spoke both Cantonese and Vietnamese! We were advised that the fish will be $88 and it'll take a bit longer to arrive. When it arrived, I was amazed at the presentation! There were tons of additives too! Flavors were amazing and it was definitely too much food! The veggies are good too! Only complaint is that I wished they gave a smaller fish knowing there are only 2-3 people dining! Make sure you bring more people along when ordering this dish! read more

Very good. I enjoy scanning LA for really good Viet fare, nope not just pho and the old standards on social. The whole baked fish in turmeric is the draw to Sáu. Verdict? it's not as delicious as the other dishes we had--outside of the turmeric, there was nothing else going on with the dish. The owner made a hard sell on the baked fish too and we thought, why not. Shoulda kept it Not. Lol. Service is excellent and there are other dishes that we want to try next time. Went here twice so far. 1 for the catfish and the other for the family lunch special. Food: always sooo amazing. I was a huge fan of the ong choy garlic, plus the catfish dish. Service: hit and miss. There was another review here that states a waiter trying to persuade him/her to not order something, I experienced the same on one of my visits, which was not cool. For the second visit though, the service was excellent. Would come back again and have recommended this place to my friends. read more

Get the catfish! Three of us managed to finish the medium size catfish. Remember to scoop up the peanut sauce from the big rectangular tray...so much flavor! Also, our server was very thoughtful how to set up our table so we could access all the herbs and sauces. Came on a weekday lunch and it was mellow. Took family here for mid autumn festival dinner and boy was it delicious. I've never had Vietnamese food like this before so it was fun to try something different and family style was fun. We ordered catfish and it was a big one that ended up being $90 alone. Definitely worth it though because it fed 8 of us! Everything on the menu just sounds and looks really good. We came here specially for the sour fish soup and the salmon (aunties request) but I wanted to try everything on the menu. Everything sounds and looks so delicious. Let's start off with Bo luc lac. The meat was juicy and tender. It was full of flavor with each bite. Sadly, there were too many of us so not enough for me to enjoy. The salmon was delicious. There might be bones in the salmon so be careful when feeding children. The fried chicken was delicious and very crispy. The highlight of our meal was the fish and sour soup. There was so much content in the hot pot. There are lots of veggies and plenty of fish so you get your moneys worth. I will say that the salty lemonade that I ordered was to my liking. It was enough sourness and saltiness.
