We have always enjoyed the Tabard Inn for its combination of good food and charming atmosphere. However, to our unpleasant surprise our party of four this past Tuesday October 14th ate dinner at the Tabard Inn. Three people in our group ordered the Beef Bourguignon. When we began to eat the beef part of the dish it was to our unpleasant surprise that the meat was fatty to the point it was indigestible. And all the pieces were equally of very poor quality. It was the worst meal we've had in DC in years. As we were hosting friends we did not want to be difficult and ruin the atmosphere. We then ordered dessert and it was good. The bill for four and no additional beverages besides water for four came to $200! We were outraged by the price and the extremely poor quality of the food. Came for brunch on a Monday around 1. Food was great, service was not. Our server barely checked on us and took forever to even take our order. When she first came by, I told her we were ready to order, and she just nodded and walked away. She didn't return until 20 minutes later, and she was nowhere to be seen during that time so I couldn't even flag her down. The rest of the servers seemed on top of things, so maybe we just got unlucky, but this was some of the worst service I've ever had at a restaurant. read more

Check out the walls, bookshelves, and the rooms you're not seated in as there is a ton to see. We sat in the courtyard, which is open year-round with heaters. There were abstract and traditional sculptures covering the various parts. It's a great choice for diners looking for a classic DC restaurant that isn't too touristy. The food and drinks were delicious. I split a salad with a friend, and it came out pre-split without us asking, which is always appreciated! It was crisp and fresh. Then for the main, I had the Farm Roasted Chicken, which I recommend with its large portion and generous sides. The staff was quick, helpful, and attentive throughout dinner. We really enjoyed our food!!! Everyone thought their food was amazing. We did a walk in, the spot is connected to a hotel. It's a little smaller inside, but they have a decent so iPad on the menu. I personally wouldn't recommend the drinks, but I would recommend food! The steak was tender and juicy. Honestly by far one of the best steaks I've had in a long time for brunch. The chicken and waffles didn't come with much chicken, but apparently tasted good. The burger I think was ground up brisket The prices are modest, it's around $15-$30 a person. I had no idea this place was so good! The cocktails were amazing - especially the savory Sakura special seasonal cocktail. It's not often you find a perfectly balanced savory cocktail like this. The food: We loved the onion tart, oysters, and hamachi crudo appetizers. Also the bread service with the porcini butter - holy smokes!!! We paid for a second serving of that. For entrees we loved the scallops, chicken, and pork chop. Dessert faves were the semifreddo and soufflé cheesecake. Ambience: I was surprised by how cute and quaint this place was. Hands down the classiest and best restaurant I've ever been to. The food was excellent and had unique flavors and components. We went during jazz night for dinner and it was absolutely perfect, really felt like going back into the 20s with the class wood furniture and beautiful art and music (we ate in the lounge area). Our waiter was extremely kind and attentive, she was so kind as to bring my grandmother a blanket (she was a tad bit cold). Very pricey, especially as our group was 5 people. Four of us went for dinner on a Sunday. We arrived an hour before our reservation (the show we were seeing ended earlier than expected) and they were able to accommodate us. The restaurant was so cozy. Our server was attentive. We ordered drinks, appetizers, entrees, and desserts. Everything was delicious. Everything is well (and slowly paced) so you never feel rushed. I was extremely excited to try this place and I walked away feeling let down in the end. Food: 6/10 (the waffle was the star) Chicken and churro waffles: 6/10- I almost thought it was a joke when I received my order! My first thought was "where was the chicken" because this is NOT what I am used to when ordering this plate and this is my go to brunch plate! After I got over my initial shock of the lack of chicken I dug in.. the chicken was flavored really well and I enjoyed the bites of bacon as well. The real highlight was the waffles though! Loved the sweetness of it all. But I did leave there hungry!! I also order donuts that never arrived, I was in a rush and by the time my entree came and I realized I never received my donuts it was time for me to leave for the airport. As for the service, the ladies at the host booth were extremely friendly and personable which I love! They gave me a really great first impression of the restaurant but my server was less than warm and a little cold. Would I return to this place again next time I'm in town, probably not. read more

The food is flavorless crap.. $40 for 2 oz of duck (2, 1oz pieces), $32 for a 4 oz pieces of bass laid in a salt less gravy.. the lightest flavor of any restaurant I've ever gone to. The chicken ($31) is two leg quarters overcooked and dry (no seasoning). They've got nice cocktails, but at $20.. The service was adequate; slow, had to ask for water refills.. didn't divide the check. The mood could've been better as they had jazz musicians in the front room, but only the two or three tables would be able to hear, so it was pointless as the majority of the tables were two divided rooms away. Snagged a last minute reservation at the Tabard on a Monday night and was pleasantly surprised. The place is very cute and quaint with a limited menu, but tons of personality. Our server was nothing short of excellent and was quite patient as we held the table for a few hours with our impromptu meetup. Don't skip the bread/butter as the butter is incredible - the bread is good too, but merely a vessel for butter consumption. The food was all good; my salmon was cooked perfectly and a great portion that didn't feel overwhelming. Grab some drinks, for sure. I had The Tabard, with tequila, and was in love. What a wonderful experience for Sunday brunch! Four of us stopped by with a reservation, and we waited just a few minutes for the table on the outdoor patio. We enjoy the patio setting more than the indoor restaurant, but that's a personal taste. In terms of food, the meals were all well prepared, I enjoyed the steak salad, but the shrimp and grits, chicken and churro, and scrambled eggs were all wonderful. Generally for a restaurant in the Washington DC area meals can get quite expensive for Sunday brunch, however the pricing was very reasonable with each entree ordered at or less than $25. With brunch drinks the bill can add up, depending upon the drink selections (the restaurant does have a full bar). I've dined at Tabard Inn Restaurant a few times for weekend brunch. The restaurant is located in a historic inn, which is infused with old world charm. From the moment you enter the restaurant you are greeted with smiles. Everyone is eager to assist. The quality of the food varies unfortunately. The first time we ate there, everything from the donuts to the salmon egg scramble was delicious. The eggs were fluffy and not overcooked. The second time we ate there, we ordered the same things we tried the first time thinking...why part with perfection? However, the eggs were overcooked and lacked the flavor that made it hard to stop eating the first time. The donuts however, remained a favorite. Fresh and hot, piled high with sugar and cinnamon. I'd definitely continue to go back here for the historical ambiance and the donuts. read more

I stumbled on this place for a quick bite and it did not disappoint! I had the Grain Bowl w/chicken and it was probably the best healthily meal I had while in D.C. It comes with an incredible green goddess salad dressing made from fresh herbs. My husband had the burger which was delicious too. This review is for weekday breakfast so I would need to come back to rate other times such as for lunch and dinners. As far as breakfast, we loved this quaint historical place with whimsical outdoor touches as we sat out at the patio. Their breakfast menu covers all our wishes and ordered (1) veggies omelette that comes with a big biscuit and my company had (2) fried chicken and waffles. The DC local had recommended this place adding that their donut is a DC Institution so we ordered that as well, debating if we could also have the scones that sounded so good, but restrained ourselves with just a donut as an "appetizer "!? - wow sooo good dusted with cinnamon and so fresh ! We each took a sample bite and used will power lol and took what's left as takeout to have room for the main breakfast and boy, did we feel wise to have done that as the portions were generous on our orders. Service was polite and prompt. Water was coffee and tea refills well attended. The patio is lush with greens and eclectic stone figures. It's a delightful place to eat whether alone or with colleagues or friends and family. I'd love to go back to try their other menus and as far as breakfast, it's one of our favorite breakfast place in DC. We will be back! read more

One of my favorite spots. In the winter, they have the fire going and on certain days they have a jazz duet. This place is a gem, you can listen to chill R&B at the bar or relax and mingle in the "lounge". The food is delicious and the service is always on point. We did run into a problem when the restaurant crossed over from brunch into the dinner menu. However, GIGI came over with a calming and comforting smile. She acknowledged what we were feeling and made us feel special. Sometimes, your favorite space will disappoint you after 15+ years but TIR has the secret touch when it comes to quality service, an inclusive environment, and whatever mood you're looking for. My first visits to Tabard Inn were in the 1980s and '90s and I always thought of it as such a special and romantic place. I recently went in the late afternoon and sat at the bar. It was so disappointing. Both bartenders were much more interested in talking to each other than in serving the customers and the drinks were pre-prepared as much as possible. So sad. I went here a few weeks ago with my family and really enjoyed the experience. This past weekend I went again, and I was incredibly surprised at just how rude the manager of the restaurant was to my party. We requested patio seating, which isn't guaranteed with a reservation (despite making it about a month in advance). We waited about 45 minutes for a patio table to open up, which we were fine with doing since my friends and I weren't in any rush. However, things quickly went downhill from here. We had a table that was awkwardly slanted downhill. Not even 5 minutes later, another table opened up and I asked if it would be possible to move there. You would have thought I asked for a free meal! The strangest part of our brunch time was how the manager walked around the entire patio area chatting with other tables, but made no eye contact with us. I attempted to thank her for the table swap as we left, but she completely walked in the other direction. Seriously! The cocktails are great here, and the food is tasty. But the service is majorly lacking. Our server was overwhelmed and hardly came by. And honestly just so awkward. My recommendation would be to come here during the week vs the weekend (if at all). Good place for brunch near DuPont circle. The hotel itself is the oldest in DC. The restaurant is quite interesting as well and has modern and historic components to it. For drinks, I got the agave y limon cocktail which was very good. For food, we got the pork posole and the shrimp and grits. The posole broth was very flavorful and reminded me of my time in Mexico. The shrimp and grits were very good too; the addition of ham to the dish was interesting. We also got a scone which was fresh and amazing. Overall very good experience. Had the best brunch at the Tabard Inn after running a 5k! Their chocolate chip pancakes are huge & so delicious! My favorite menu item though is the Berries with Ricotta Cheese! The berries are so fresh & the ricotta is sweetened with honey & topped with granola for the perfect amount of sweetness! I also never knew about their HUGE COVERED OUTDOOR PATIO on the second floor!! It's amazing, especially during COVID when you want fresh air. I got the chicken, and to be honest I kind of wish I would have gotten something else because I don't love bone-in chicken that much. I stayed in the Inn and thought I'd try out the restaurant for Sunday brunch. The Tabbard inn is a hundred year-old hotel nestled amongst brownstones and the interior has maintained its historic charm. My wife and I found the atmosphere comfortable and inviting, the service quick and friendly, and the brunch cocktails delicious. My daughter and I went here for Sunday brunch a couple of weeks ago. Love, love, LOVE this place. It's in a neat old DC row house that has been joined with two other homes to form the inn. The restaurant is in the basement, and it is so cozy! The ambiance is just amazing. Our server was very friendly and helpful with recommendations on the menu. We ended up sharing a scone and a donut between the two of us. They were both yummy! I had a pear and goat cheese salad that was amazing, and my daughter had the hot chicken sandwich. If you're not a fan of cream cheese, you probably would order something else but I thought it was a nice touch. Everything was at an appropriate temperature, and all the flavors went well together.
