You guys have been around for along time, I get that, your food is terrible and expensive. My coworker and I ordered two taco plates to go and they were awful. I want to like you, you should be good for as long as you have been here, but not on that day. There is too much competition to suck like this in Albuquerque. The portions were small for the price and you need way more honey for the sopas. The sopas were good however, and the garnish was fresh. Well a week ago I placed an order of a Tostada Compuesta and it was great! Just like the old days. Today ordered the same thing and was presented with something 1/8th the size and no sopapilla offered which I received with my order. I told friends how good it was before and now don't bother. Even though I'm from ABQ, I've never dined at Taco Sal's. My family decided to try it last weekend and it met our expectations, but didn't exceed. I too, heard about the reputation this place carries, and was not that impressed. We had a burrito, taquitos and tacos and the only thing that stood out were the taco's and the sopa's. Good, inexpensive food and very friendly service. I will go back in the future. We ordered the chile relleno and tamale specials and both were very good and much less expensive than at fancier restaurants. No tv, which is fine with me. I find that distracting anyway. Once a NM tradition has become just another below average establishment. Just a few years ago I would eat here weekly. Since the new owners have changed it I can no longer get through a meal. The prices have gone up and the quality and taste have declined. Avoid the chicken as it's dry. The service was ok. This is the best example if average New Mexican food here in Alb. Nothing special at all and everything tastes like it was cooked the night before. Prices have gone up too. .75 for 1 sopapilla? $1.75 to mix green and red chile. Rediculous. I hate nickel and dime charges like that. read more

This place is very "Albuquerque", it's been around since the 60's and it shows but don't be scared off. I love this place, I've had the chalupas and fajitas here. Lot's of options for different sauces and salsas, quick and very affordable. Maybe the foods not as good as some of the higher end joints but for what you pay for it's great and a great alternative to the other places in same price point. They have different specials every (I've only tried a couple). read more

Based on other posts, it sounds like I missed the glory days of this ABQ landmark because it was substandard at best. ordered delivery of three shrimp tacos...by far the worst tacos i ever had, the shrimp was frozen salad shrimp (from Walmart?), packaged shredded lettuce (Walmart?), and the worst tasteless thin corn tortilla you can buy (Walmart?), soggy and fell apart when i tried to lift it to my mouth, had to eat it with a fork like a cheap salad but the worst thing is the price !!!!! Went with my daughter on a Saturday for lunch. We were greeted with a smile and told to sit anywhere. Drink orders came quickly. The chips and salsa came, salsa watery with a little bite afterwards. My daughter ordered the open face burger and I ordered the tostada compuesta with chicken, no beans, Christmas chile. The burger looked like a grey frozen patty that was topped with green chile, lettuce & tomatoes. The onion rings also frozen but tasted good. I liked my tostada, it had fresh tasting shredded chicken, a nice amount of cheese, mild but tasty Christmas, lettuce & tomatoes. It was so full that I had to resort to a fork & knife as the tortilla broke under the weight. My daughter was very disappointed with her burger & only ate half but I would order the tostada again. My daughter about died when I called our waiter "adorbs". Not to his face of course. read more

I arrived, alone, in early afternoon on Monday, Nov 13. I ordered a meal--chicken taco and green chile relleno with refried beans and rice, and a diet Dr. Pepper. The short version of my review is that the food is five star, but it is one star on ambience. Don't misunderstand me. This place is clean, and yes, I checked the washrooms. They were clean, too. They didn't have the extended toilet seats I prefer, but they are clean. The TP is in one of those hideous covered thingies that are usually hard to get paper from, but these were easy to operate and they had a separate, uncovered roll on top of the grab bar just in case there is a problem with the main dispenser. But this place, though clean, is way, way short on romance. If you want that, go to Papa Felipe's less than a block east of here on the south side of Menaul. They have good ambience and decent food at twice the price. Taco Sal gave me two pepitos for the price of one because they said they were too small, though the seemed sizable enough to me. The taco did not stint on the chicken; it brimmed right up to the top of the taco and the lettuce and tomato spilled out onto the plate. It was tender and not overcooked, and the taco itself was lightly fried, though it had the required crunch and was absolutely outstanding. The green chile was delicious, and covered, as were the papitas, with a combination of cheddar and jack cheeses, and the well cooked rice was in a simple, unadorned tomato sauce the way I like it. Good refried beans, too, but the two most outstanding parts of the meal were the chicken taco and the outsized, piping hot sopapilla--just as wide as any other restaurant, but half again longer than most, and, like the taco shell, not overfried. This is a great little place if you are looking just for a good meal at ridiculously low prices. Total cost $9.83, and $2.25 of it was the soda. Good chips and salsa while you wait, too. read more

I haven't been there in many years, but I was from Farmington and my church youth group used to go to youth camp in Amarillo, TX. Passing through Albuquerque, we always made sure we stopped and ate at Taco Sal. We were always greeted warmly, the atmosphere was superb and the food delicious. One thing that always impressed me was they would put a basket of soapillas at each end of the table and just as soon as one basket was empty, they was there with a full basket and brought more until we told him not to bring any more. And they were the absolute best soapillas I have ever eaten. Wish I lived in Albuquerque for one reason only - I would love to be able to eat at Taco Sal. Bummed. Used to eat here seriously once a week, as I live right around the corner. I've been eating here for 33 years, now I haven't been in months. The new owners really f'ed it up. ordered nachos..w that canned nacho sauce..no jalapenos...just gross!.. ..would be better at 7-11...couldnt eat them then remade them w (maybe)actual shredded cheese...wasnt melted cooked or NADA! the cooks there dont care but the wait staff was nice...the beef tastes like it would be from a burro..oh well they can dump on out w that kind of quality...Much better places to eat...but grab a picture cause noone even eats there anymore read more

Average. Not the Taco Sal of of a number of years ago, Quality has gone down considerable. But still, better than drive-in.

I grew up right around the corner from this place so I know it for a long time. I am now 68. The sopapillas are great (assuming they still are , I have not had them in a few years). Any place that lasts this long with Mexican food has to be pretty good. Give them a try. read more

Lyndon is my name. I have eaten at Taco Sal since I was 10 years old. I have seen good and bad days. Last night was the last night(12/03/2012) I will ever eat there. I spent $40 on dinner with my wife and the entire way home to Los Lunas we drove by other restaurants saying "we could have eaten here(or there) instead" The food was small. Carne was in cubes and had zero flavor. I ordered stuffed sopas, 1 chicken green and 1 carne red. Sopas were undercooked. Wifes tacos were dry ground beef(gave remainder to dogs when I got home. They thought it was great. We didn't) Both had zero flavor. It is sad to see a place you have eaten at for 32 years ride on the great name of Taco Sal and serve absolute garbage.
