Once you get past the fact you're dining inside a filling station's convenience store, Taco Urbano might grow on you. The burrito pescado frito (fried fish) was filling and very tasty. Ordered food on Ubereats. Did not receive a notice they were closed. Went to pick up order the cook told me they were closed and told me to cancel my order. I didn't realize Ubereats charged me for the order. They told me the restaurant would have needed to cancel for me to get a refund. Please don't let the fact that you can find Urban Counter in a gas station deter you from experiencing the food here. Probably one of the most friendly and excited people greeted us, and when he found out we were visiting from Atlanta, he hooked us up with some good eats. Located inside of the Pride gas station off of S. Wabash street, man this is definitely a nice little hidden gem! Here's what we got! Italian beef ($6.49) Blue cheese Burger ($6.99) Classic Chicago dog ($2.99) Hand cut fries ($2.19) Sodas x 2 (on the house) So here's the good: The classic Chicago dog was great! We devoured this thing with it's soft poppy seed bun, and all the traditional fixings (sweet relish, onion, tomato, pickle spear, sport peppers and mustard). Best thing we tried here. The Blue cheese burger, complete with nice chunks of blue cheese was a good burger. Not a good "from the gas station" burger...but a good burger! 8 oz of a steak burger on a brioche bun made these bites kinda awesome. One of the things we both agreed on was while the Italian beef sandwich had very tender strips of beef on soft bread, man was it salty. We couldn't tell if it was from the cheese or the sauce, but sadly this missed the mark for us. French fries really were just french fries for us, not much in terms of being special. Interior seating is available at Urban Counter, so you don't have to get your food and go. Restrooms are shared with the gas station but they are clean. Again, customer service was outstanding and I loved their energy. Happy staff, quality food and reasonable prices hidden in plain sight. Had an excellent breakfast here on a Saturday morning. Actually arrived about 5 mins past 11:00am, and the friendly female working behind the counter kindly allowed me to order breakfast 5 mins past the cutoff time. That was a very nice touch, and was excellent service. A person walked up 30 seconds after I ordered and she told them breakfast was over (lol). It took a little while for my order to be ready, but im guessing they had already put the breakfast stuff up and had to pull it back out to make my food. I definitely didn't complain considering I was late for breakfast in the first place. My bacon egg and cheese sandwich was perfectly cooked and was delicious. It also was much bigger than I expected for it to be. I believe they used panini bread, which made for a very large breakfast sandwich. Don't be afraid of this place just b/c it's located next to a gas station. The service was excellent, the seating area was spotless, and the food was top notch and freshly cooked to order. For being inside a gas station (which we did not realize until we got there), the food was pretty tasty. I had a Turkey Club sandwich which was huge and got the job done. Best sandwich ever? No, but it was still pretty tasty and kept me full for the afternoon! We also spit some fries which were a bit on the soggy side. Little did we know it was actually located inside a gas station. Oops! It was still darn good for being located inside a gas station though. I had a craving for a chicken caesar salad the other day so I stopped by Urban Counter on the way home. Initially, I didn't know that the restaurant was inside the BP gas station so I was a bit surprised. Admittedly, it was a slight turn off at first given the area but that feeling quickly dissipated upon entry. I used to live in Maryland and the best chicken in the state comes from Royal Farms which is located inside countless local gas stations. While living there I learned not to be so quick to judge food by the location of the restaurant. Anyway, I was immediately impressed with the restaurants theme and decor. The space was clean, modern and fit seamlessly into the (BP) convenience store. There weren't any customers at the counter so i was able to walk right up and place my order. The chicken caesar salad cost nearly $9 which is average given the (South Loop) location. The salad was fairly large, freshly prepared and actually pretty good. I didn't really care for the taste of the caesar dressing but other than that I was throughly impressed. I wouldn't order the salad again since I didn't like the dressing but I would stop by Urban Counter again to try something else. The service was pretty decent too as the guy who served me was pleasant and served me with a smile. UPDATE: I just had a burger and fries from UC. It was WAY too greasy. The grease literally soaked through the packaging. The food was decent (nothing great) but I'll never eat a burger form there again. I didn't find it all that flavorful and the patty was burnt. This was the first time I've ever saw a fully functional restaurant inside of a gas station convenience store. You would think the quality of the food would be subpar. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of taste in the food. The restaurant itself reminds me of an old school diner where you can see the cooks making the food and the style of seating. The tables, floors and counters were all clean and neatly put together. The only downside to this place is the bathroom situation. They share restrooms with the convenience store and the woman's room was out of order when I came. I ordered the signature blue cheese burger and it was heavenly! Made and cooked to order, it melted in my mouth with flavor. The fries were also made to order and were nice and crisp. I also got a strawberry milk shake which tasted great (although it wasn't made with real strawberries). My fiancée order some grilled chicken sliders and they were excellent. The food looks better on the menu and online than it does in real life while you're eating it, but for food in a gas station, it's much better than you'd expect. The service is a little slow at times, but they make your food to order, which is nice to see. If there were more places in the South Loop for quick food that isn't a cold sub sandwich, this place would get a lower rating, but since they're doing good work providing something snazzier than a plain sub and something less expensive than the surrounding sit down restaurants can provide, they'll definitely keep getting customers. read more

Urban Counter doesn't have a storefront on Wabash or Roosevelt because... it's in a gas station?! I typically stop at the gas station on my way out of Chicago during the Holidays, before jumping onto Southbound LSD. After about a year, I decided to try some of the food at the Urban Counter. Here's what I ordered: -Blue Cheeseburger w/ no lettuce (comes w/ blue cheese crumbles and bacon jam?) -Fries -Fountain Iced Tea I'll admit, I had very low expectations for the food here. My concerns began to grow stronger after waiting about 15 minutes for the food to come out, but when it did - I was pleasantly surprised. The burger patty was legit. The quality of the beef was impressive and the bacon jam was jam-dropping. I'm not a huge fan of bacon, but this jam was very unique. UC fries were very fresh and crisp - perfectly prepared. The food is quality, and well prepared by chefs who really seem to care and take pride in their work. Here on a Tues afternoon in June. Best gas station food you will ever have. Got a turkey club(prepared incorrectly), rings, and a choc. malt. Food took about 10 min and curiously the malt took about 15. Sandwich was delicious with fresh avocado & veggies, hickory smoked Canadian bacon, and thin sliced turkey. Bread was lightly toasted on the grill. It was supposed to NOT have cheese on it but it was mild and fine. The manager gave me a coupon for my troubles. Ring order was large(8-10 rings) and crispy. Lets face it. This is a hard concept to grasp. Quality food from a gas station? Luckily I got over it quick because I really enjoyed it. I have stopped for coffee, hash brown and a breakfast burrito about 10 times. I often get breakfast burritos every where i go and this is by far the best one I have ever had. It's very consistently executed, great ratio of ingredients and just he right amount if spice from the jalapeños. Some might find it a little spicy so be sure to ask. Surprisingly good for a restaurant in a gas station in Chicago. I have so far been there twice and have had nothing but good food from them. The cheese fries are really good there and I will be back there soon for an order of those. I haven't tried their burgers yet, but my boyfriend has and he loves them. He has already been back a few times without me. The only reason I give this place a 4 star review is the wait time. It is horribly long. It took our food 20 minutes to be ready. I mean, I understand that there are only two people working, but to make a hot dog and fries and a burger shouldn't take that long for a hot dog place. My husband and I went to the restaurant and he ordered the bacon burger and I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich. My husband said the hamburger was perfectly cooked and satisfied with the size of the meal - he was completely full when we left. My grilled chicken was ordered with BBQ sauce and was really tasty and was served on a fresh Italian roll. Sides ordered were hand cut fries and mozzarella sticks and they were as good as the entrees. Would recommend Urban Counter to everyone! read more

Good food for cheap! Been here a couple times while showing homes in the south loop. They are inconsistent with their cooks. I think I've had 3 different versions of the bacon burger lol. I am a huge fan of Urban Counter. Do not be thrown off by the location, Urban Counter is very high quality food. The cheese fries alone are incredible. This establishment could easily have a location in the heart of Wicker Park and do very well. Everything on the menu is well priced, its a little confusing actually as to how they make a profit, high quality ingredients and a low price. Often I go to the Urban Counter, place my order and while Im waiting, I realize that Im actually in a paradise, the waves crashing against the beach, the seagulls singing "happy birthday", oh wait, Im at Urban Counter, the food is that good! read more

I ordered from Urban Counter yesterday through Delivery.com and was not impressed. We live 4 blocks away, yet the order took over an hour and the food was cold when it arrived. Husband had the blue cheese burger and it was ok, although it was cold. I had the turkey club; the bacon was flabby and fatty and the sandwich was soggy. The fries were ok (cold) The $2.99 order of onion rings had FOUR onion rings in it. Four. Are you fricking kidding me? The thing that made me not give them all five stars is, they've gotten our instruction of sandwiches wrong and the orders have been missing items. They are always nice about and we've gotten credits.
